Integrating Security Into The Curriculum, Cynthia E. Irvine, Shiu-Kai Chin, Deborah Frincke Jan 1998

Integrating Security Into The Curriculum, Cynthia E. Irvine, Shiu-Kai Chin, Deborah Frincke

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

The number of skilled practitioners of computer security who are able to address the complexities of modern technology and are familiar with successful approaches to system security is very small. People want security but are faced with two difficulties. First, they do not know how to achieve it in the context of their enterprises. They may not even know of a way to translate organizational procedures into policies, much less implement a set of mechanisms to enforce those policies. Second, they have no way of knowing whether their chosen mechanisms are effective. The recent US Presidential Commission on Critical Infrastructure …

An Automated State Model Generation Algorithm For Simulation/Analysis Of Power Systems With Power Electronic Components, Steven Pekarek, E. A. Walters, T. L. Skvarenina, O. Wasynczuk Jan 1998

An Automated State Model Generation Algorithm For Simulation/Analysis Of Power Systems With Power Electronic Components, Steven Pekarek, E. A. Walters, T. L. Skvarenina, O. Wasynczuk

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a recently developed algorithmic method of deriving the state equations of power systems containing power electronic components is described. Therein the system is described by the pertinent branch parameters and the circuit topology; however, unlike circuit-based algorithms, the difference equations are not implemented at the branch level. Instead, the composite system state equations are established. A demonstration of the computer implementation of this algorithm to model a variable-speed, constant-frequency aircraft generation system is described. Because of the large number of states and complexity of the system, particular attention is placed on the development of a model structure …

Dc Link Stabilized Field Oriented Control Of Electric Propulsion Systems, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff, Steven F. Glover, H. J. Hegner, H. N. Robey Jan 1998

Dc Link Stabilized Field Oriented Control Of Electric Propulsion Systems, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff, Steven F. Glover, H. J. Hegner, H. N. Robey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Induction motor based electric propulsion systems can be used in a wide variety of applications including locomotives, hybrid electric vehicles, and ships. Field oriented control of these drives is attractive since it allows the torque to be tightly and nearly instantaneously controlled. However, such systems can be prone to negative impedance instability of the DC link. This paper examines this type of instability and sets forth a readily implemented albeit nonlinear control strategy to mitigate this potential problem.

An Improved Method For Incorporating Magnetic Saturation In The Q-D Synchronous Machine Model, Keith Corzine, Brian T. Kuhn, S. D. Sudhoff, H. J. Hegner Jan 1998

An Improved Method For Incorporating Magnetic Saturation In The Q-D Synchronous Machine Model, Keith Corzine, Brian T. Kuhn, S. D. Sudhoff, H. J. Hegner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An improved technique for incorporating saturation into the q-d axis model (Park''s model) of a synchronous machine is proposed. By choosing magnetizing flux linkage as a state variable, iterative procedures required by traditional methods are avoided. The saturation function is represented by an arctangent function which has some distinct advantages over polynomial representations and look-up tables. In particular, the parameters of the proposed function all have physical significance and the proposed function is defined over an infinite range of flux linkage. The model is verified for steady-state and transient conditions using a laboratory synchronous machine-rectifier system similar to those commonly …

Aerodynamic Interference For Hypersonic Missiles At Low Angle Of Attack, Harlan F. Nelson, Derek G. Hillstrom Jan 1998

Aerodynamic Interference For Hypersonic Missiles At Low Angle Of Attack, Harlan F. Nelson, Derek G. Hillstrom

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A Euler code is used to predict the flow field over a hypersonic missile and to determine the carryover factors KW(B), fin lift in the presence of the body, and KB(W), lift produced by the body in the presence of the fins. The missile is assumed to have cruciform, delta fins in the + orientation and an aspect ratio of 1.529. Results are presented as a function of fin span at Mach 6, 8, and 10, for a 2-deg angle of attack. Two ratios of specific heats, 1.4 and 1.3, are considered to partially account for vibrational excitation effects. Both …

Parameter Estimation For Real Filtered Sinusoids, Daniel R. Zahirniak Sep 1997

Parameter Estimation For Real Filtered Sinusoids, Daniel R. Zahirniak

Theses and Dissertations

This research develops theoretical methods for parameter estimation of filtered, pulsed sinusoids in noise and demonstrates their effectiveness for Electronic Warfare EW applications. Within the context of stochastic modeling, a new linear model, parameterized by a set of Linear Prediction LP coefficients, is derived for estimating the frequencies of filtered sinusoids. This model is an improvement over previous modeling techniques since the effects of the filter and the coefficients upon the noise statistics are properly accounted for during model development. From this linear model, a relationship between LP coefficient estimation and Maximum Likelihood ML frequency estimation is derived and several …

A Value Function Approach To Information Operations Moe's: A Preliminary Study, Michael P. Doyle, Richard F. Deckro, Jack M. Kloeber Jr., Jack A. Jackson Jr., Center For Modeling, Simulation, And Analysis, Air Force Institute Of Technology Jul 1997

A Value Function Approach To Information Operations Moe's: A Preliminary Study, Michael P. Doyle, Richard F. Deckro, Jack M. Kloeber Jr., Jack A. Jackson Jr., Center For Modeling, Simulation, And Analysis, Air Force Institute Of Technology

AFIT Documents

A value focused thinking approach is applied to information operations. A preliminary value hierarchy for information operations is constructed by extracting the values of senior military leadership from existing doctrine. To identify these key values for information operations, applicable existing doctrine was reviewed and summarized. Additionally, hierarchical representations of the values represented within each reviewed doctrine are developed. A value hierarchy requires that supporting objectives be mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive. Within this analysis, these requirements are enforced, in part, by developed definitions which serve as tests to maintain mutual exclusivity. An exhaustive set of supporting values is also guaranteed …

Dyna3d Simulations Of Low-Speed Impact Response Of Laminated Composite Panels, Kenneth William Barlow Jul 1997

Dyna3d Simulations Of Low-Speed Impact Response Of Laminated Composite Panels, Kenneth William Barlow

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Low-speed impact response of laminated composite panels is simulated without material damage using the DYNA3D finite element analysis code. The DYNA3D code is a nonlinear transient dynamics simulation tool with a contact algorithm for impact. By gaining a more comprehensive understanding of this dynamic impact event, this work is meant to contribute to improving designs for damage tolerance and residual strength by providing modeling and analysis guidelines for the analyst.

Structural modeling of the laminate and the impact event are found to be important factors for the analyst to consider. Since DYNA3D uses an explicit formulation, problem size is constrained …

Diffraction Analysis And Tactical Applications Of Signal Propagation Over Rough Terrain, You-Cheol Jang Jun 1997

Diffraction Analysis And Tactical Applications Of Signal Propagation Over Rough Terrain, You-Cheol Jang

Theses and Dissertations

The free space propagation model is inadequate to predict the mean path-loss in ground wireless communication. Also, many existing propagation channel models do not adequately predict path-loss in rough terrain because most of them were based on measurements in urban areas. Hence, a channel model that estimates mean path-loss over many different kinds of terrain conditions is desired. In this thesis, two new propagation channel models, Real Terrain Diffraction Model (RTDMOD) and Universal Terrain Channel Model (UTCMOD), were developed. Other geometric theory of diffraction (GTD) methods (Epstein-Peterson (EP) and Deygout (DG)) agree within 5 % from 3 MHz to 3GHz …

Modeling A Chemical Battlefield And The Resulting Effects In A Theater-Level Combat Model, Todd M. Gesling Mar 1997

Modeling A Chemical Battlefield And The Resulting Effects In A Theater-Level Combat Model, Todd M. Gesling

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the development of a methodology to model chemical weapons use in the Joint Staff's Joint Warfare Analysis Experimental Prototype (JWAEP) and to quantify the resulting effects. The methodology incorporates organic unit assets and theater-level chemical assets into JWAEP by using the three principles of nuclear, biological, and chemical defense (NBC) which reflect joint and Army doctrine, and combines them with the basic concepts already used in existing theater-level models. Other aspects of the problem include representing chemical 'packages' on the battlefield, determining attrition and time effects, adjusting unit effectiveness, determining chemical package intelligence acquisition procedures, identifying solution …

Optimizing Airborne Area Surveillance Asset Placement, Douglas E. Fuller Feb 1997

Optimizing Airborne Area Surveillance Asset Placement, Douglas E. Fuller

Theses and Dissertations

Currently there is no automated planning tool for the optimum positioning of USAF area surveillance assets for a theater level campaign. This research seeks to find the optimum or near optimum placement of the limited USAF airborne surveillance assets against a theater level target set. The problem of finding the optimum orbit points can be modeled as a classic maximal covering location problem (MCLP). Operational constraints on the placement of surveillance aircraft can be handled by preprocessing the potential orbit points to eliminate infeasible orbit points. Heavy emphasis is placed on preprocessing the data to reduce problem size and hence …

A Specialization Toolkit To Increase The Diversity Of Operating Systems, Calton Pu, Andrew P. Black, Crispin Cowan, Jonathan Walpole, Charles Consel

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Virus and worm attacks that exploit system implementation details can be countered with a diversified set of implementations. Furthermore, immune systems show that attacks from previously unknown organisms require effective dynamic response. In the Synthetix project, we have been developing a specialization toolkit to improve the performance of operating system kernels. The toolkit helps programmers generate and manage diverse specialized implementations of software modules. The Tempo-C specializer tool generates different versions for both compile-time and run-time specialization. We are now adapting the toolkit to improve operating system survivability against implementations attacks.

A Voltage Control Strategy For Current-Regulated Pwm Inverters, Oleg Wasynczuk, Scott D. Sudhoff, Tin D. Tran, David H. Clayton, Henry J. Hegner Dec 1996

A Voltage Control Strategy For Current-Regulated Pwm Inverters, Oleg Wasynczuk, Scott D. Sudhoff, Tin D. Tran, David H. Clayton, Henry J. Hegner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Alternative voltage control strategies for current-regulated PWM inverters are analyzed, including previously established feedforward and feedforward/feedback controllers and a newly proposed decoupling feedback control strategy. The steady-state and dynamic characteristics of each of these control methods are illustrated and compared for a selected inverter design. It is shown that the feedforward controller exhibits steady-state error and an undesirable overshoot of the output voltages during startup. The addition of a feedback loop eliminates the steady-state error and reduces the overshoot; however, the natural response is underdamped regardless of the choice of feedback gains. A decoupling feedback control strategy that eliminates the …

Performance Analysis Of Dynamic Routing Protocols In A Low Earth Orbit Satellite Data Network, Richard F. Janoso

Theses and Dissertations

Modern warfare is placing an increasing reliance on global communications. Currently under development are several Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite systems that propose to deliver voice and data traffic to subscribers anywhere on the globe. However, very little is known about the performance of conventional routing protocols under orbital conditions where the topology changes on a scale of minutes rather than days. This thesis compares two routing protocols in a LEO environment. One (Extended Bellman-Ford) is a conventional terrestrial routing protocol, while the other (Darting) is a new protocol which has been proposed as suitable for use in LEO networks. …

The Preliminary Design Of A Standardized Spacecraft Bus For Small Tactical Satellites, Gerald Ashby, Darren Buck, Robert Carneal Iv, Tansel Cokuysal, Ahmet Donmez, James From, Todd Krueger, Brian Robinson Nov 1996

The Preliminary Design Of A Standardized Spacecraft Bus For Small Tactical Satellites, Gerald Ashby, Darren Buck, Robert Carneal Iv, Tansel Cokuysal, Ahmet Donmez, James From, Todd Krueger, Brian Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

Current satellite design philosophies concentrate on optimizing and tailoring a particular satellite bus to a specific payload or mission. Today's satellites take a long time to build, checkout, and launch. An alternate approach shifts the design paradigm to one that focuses on access to space, enabling tactical deployment on demand and the capability to put current payload technology into orbit, versus several years by today's standards, by which time the technology is already obsolete. This design study applied systems engineering methods to create a satellite bus architecture that can accommodate a range of remote sensing mission modules. System-level and subsystem-level …
