Reduced Parts-Count Multi-Level Rectifiers, Keith Corzine, J. Yuen, J. R. Baker
Reduced Parts-Count Multi-Level Rectifiers, Keith Corzine, J. Yuen, J. R. Baker
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Multi-level power converters have gained much attention due to their high power quality, low switching losses, and high-voltage capability. These advantages make the multi-level converter a candidate topology for the next generation of naval ship propulsion systems. The primary disadvantage of these systems is the large number of semiconductors involved. This paper presents a reduced parts-count rectifier which is well suited for naval rectifier applications where bi-directional power flow is not required. The proposed converter is analyzed and experimentally verified on an 18 kW four-level rectifier/inverter system.

Analysis Of A Four-Level Dc/Dc Buck Converter, Keith Corzine, J. Yuen, J. R. Baker
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a four-level DC/DC buck converter is introduced. The primary application for this converter is to regulate the center capacitor voltage in a four-level inverter system. The steady-state and average-value models for the proposed converter are developed and compared in simulation. The converter was constructed in the laboratory and verified on a four-level motor drive system. It was shown that the four-level DC/DC converter provides capacitor voltage balancing and allows higher output voltage utilization from the inverter.

The Fundamental Use And Extension Of Mode Stirred Chambers, Stephen A. Scearce
The Fundamental Use And Extension Of Mode Stirred Chambers, Stephen A. Scearce
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Mode stirred chambers are used to perform radiated susceptibility tests on equipment that is expected to operate normally when exposed to electromagnetic (EM) fields. These tests are useful in identifying failure events in airborne equipment and other electronic equipment that are exposed to EM fields. This thesis is focused on further defining the operating environment of mode stirred chambers and relating the electromagnetic environment in the chamber to the electromagnetic environment of an actual aircraft. The majority of mode stirred chamber tests are implemented by using mechanical mode stirring. Mechanical mode stirring is the process of varying boundary conditions in …
Simulation Studies Of Cellular Electroporation Due To Ultra-Fast Electric Pulses, Gayathri R. Barthaki
Simulation Studies Of Cellular Electroporation Due To Ultra-Fast Electric Pulses, Gayathri R. Barthaki
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Biological systems, from cells to ecosystems, are intrinsically complex information-processing networks. It often becomes difficult to predict their behavior during an experimental investigation, as their behavior is fundamentally chaotic, Hence, building models that mimic the dynamics of such systems and performing computer simulations would help in understanding, predicting, controlling and optimizing these systems. This thesis is aimed at the development of a mathematical model for the process of electroporation in biological cells when they are subjected to ultra-fast electric pulses and at conducting simulations to understand its dynamic behavior with special emphasis on the physics of ultra-short time scales.

Robust Multi-Scenario Optimization Of An Air Expeditionary Force Force Structure Applying Genetic Algorithms To The Combat Forces Assessment Model, Barry D. Bennett Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The United States Air Force is increasingly facing more diverse threat situations while existing force structure levels are being reduced and proposed compositions are being severely scrutinized for relevance, affordability, and effectiveness. Military planners are struggling with the question of how to generate a single force structure that can adequately respond to a multitude of threat scenarios in an uncertain future while at the same time being tasked to prove just how effective their choice will be. In the past, modeling has been effective in showing how a force can respond to a single threat scenario but a new modeling …
A Tabu Search For Scheduling And Rescheduling Combat Aircraft, Kevin M. Calhoun
A Tabu Search For Scheduling And Rescheduling Combat Aircraft, Kevin M. Calhoun
Theses and Dissertations
Scheduling an air campaign is time and labor intensive. Exacerbating the problem, combat planners use manual methods to accomplish much of this daunting but critical task. While some work has been done to automate the process, the approaches used generate schedules that must undergo major modifications before they are "flyable." Planners, therefore, distrust the results and use the automated features of the software sparingly. Additional problems arise due to the lag time between the publication of the Air Tasking Order (ATO) and the start of the ATO day. During this time, conditions change in the dynamic battlespace (aircraft break, runways …

Global Positioning System (Gps) Error Source Prediction, Marcus G. Ferguson
Theses and Dissertations
With the initiation of the navigation accuracy prediction algorithm used to estimate the amount of GPS solution (location and time) error for receivers, the capability to accurately predict solution errors due to the major GPS error sources is growing. Although some sources of error within the GPS solution have been previously analyzed, modeled, and/or accounted for within various modeling efforts, a formal evaluation of the seven major error sources that distort GPS activity has not been officially conducted up until this point. This research offers a logical assessment of all the major GPS error sources and their definitive impact on …

Hierarchical Interactive Theater Model (Hitm): An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Strategic Effects And Ooda Loops, Richard K. Bullock
Hierarchical Interactive Theater Model (Hitm): An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Strategic Effects And Ooda Loops, Richard K. Bullock
Theses and Dissertations
Airpower's strength lies in being able to quickly strike the enemy directly where they are vulnerable while being unhampered by geography and surface forces. Airpower theory suggests the effects of these strikes propagate throughout an opponent1s military system yielding catastrophic output or strategic effects. Despite this theory being a cornerstone of US Air Force doctrine, current Air Force models do not seem to capture airpower's inherent strength. Since these models are used to support budgetary decision making, the United States may not be funding the airpower capability it needs.
Design And Validation Of An Accurate Gps Signal And Receiver Truth Model For Comparing Advanced Receiver Processing Techniques, Phillip Martin Corbell
Design And Validation Of An Accurate Gps Signal And Receiver Truth Model For Comparing Advanced Receiver Processing Techniques, Phillip Martin Corbell
Theses and Dissertations
Recent increases in the computational power of computers and digital signal processors have made possible new, novel signal tracking techniques in GPS receivers. One such technique is known as Direct Correlators Output Processing (DCOP). This technique replaces individual traditional tracking loops with a single Kalman Filter, which jointly processes the received signals while exploiting their correlated noises. DCOP is innovative in its potential to replace the tried and true classical signal tracking loops. It is also an enabling technology for ultra-tightly coupled GPS/INS (Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System). Potential benefits of these new tracking techniques include an order-of-magnitude improvement in …
Modelling Information Assurance: A Value Focused Thinking Approach, Jonathan Todd Hamill
Modelling Information Assurance: A Value Focused Thinking Approach, Jonathan Todd Hamill
Theses and Dissertations
The information revolution has brought forth new and improved capabilities to rapidly disseminate and employ information in decision-making. These capabilities are critical to the civilian and military infrastructures of the United States, and act as force enhancers and enablers for the Armed Forces. These capabilities, however, often rely upon systems interconnected throughout the world, resulting in potentially increased vulnerability to attack. To add to this problem, elusive, threatening forces (national and transnational) originating from anywhere on the globe are likely to offer opponents less reliant on information technology an asymmetric advantage over information-reliant nations like the United States. To date, …
Leontief Metamodeling For Military Strategic Effects, Anthony W. Snodgrass
Leontief Metamodeling For Military Strategic Effects, Anthony W. Snodgrass
Theses and Dissertations
In this research, we propose and demonstrate an approach to incorporate currently un-modeled interactions into an existing or a new combat model or simulation. We apply the Leontief Input-Output model, which is a macro-economic model that measures the interactions between major industrial sectors of an economy, as a metamodel that periodically assesses the status of various combat units and support functions. If needed resources are insufficient, appropriate degrades are input into the combat model. As a result, dependencies that are not in the combat model are incorporated. Hence, we can assess the strategic or cascading effects of destroying a set …

Modeling The Statistical Time And Angle Of Arrival Characteristics Of An Indoor Multipath Channel, Michael A. Jensen, Brian D. Jeffs, A. Lee Swindlehurst, Quentin H. Spencer
Faculty Publications
Most previously proposed statistical models for the indoor multipath channel include only time of arrival characteristics. However, in order to use statistical models in simulating or analyzing the performance of systems employing spatial diversity combining, information about angle of arrival statistics is also required. Ideally, it would be desirable to characterize the full spare-time nature of the channel. In this paper, a system is described that was used to collect simultaneous time and angle of arrival data at 7 GHz. Data processing methods are outlined, and results obtained from data taken in two different buildings are presented. Based on the …
Optimal Distributed Binary Hypothesis Testing With Independent Identical Sensors, Q. Zhang, P. K. Varshney, R. D. Wesel
Optimal Distributed Binary Hypothesis Testing With Independent Identical Sensors, Q. Zhang, P. K. Varshney, R. D. Wesel
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
We consider the problem of distributed binary hypothesis testing with independent identical sensors. It is well known that for this problem the optimal sensor rules are a likelihood ratio threshold tests and the optimal fusion rule is a K-out-of-N rule [1]. Under the Bayesian criterion, we show that for a fixed K-out-of-N fusion rule, the probability of error is a quasiconvex function of the likelihood ratio threshold used in the sensor decision rule. Therefore, the probability of error has a single minimum and a unique optimal threshold achieves this minimum. We obtain a sufficient and necessary condition on the optimal …

A Schooling On Their Implications For Software Engineering [Trends], Ann K. Miller
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A discussion is presented on trends in software engineering. This can be done by simply extrapolating some of the popular, current trends. And, in fact, we examine a few of these obvious indicators. However, software engineering has had new approaches that are more revolutionary than evolutionary. In particular, we try to discern trends in software engineering based on trends in delivered software systems.
Evaluation Of Lsco Electrodes For Sensor Protection Devices, Robert W. Schwartz, M. T. Sebastian
Evaluation Of Lsco Electrodes For Sensor Protection Devices, Robert W. Schwartz, M. T. Sebastian
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We have evaluated lanthanum strontium cobalt oxide (La0.50Sr0.50CoOx; LSCO 50/50) as a candidate “transparent” electrode for use in an electrostatic shutter-based infrared sensor protection device. The device requires that the electrode be transparent (80% transmission) and have moderate sheet resistance (300 - 500 Ω/sq.). To meet these needs, the effects of postdeposition annealing on the resistivity and optical absorption characteristics of sputter deposited LSCO thin films were studied. The as-deposited films were characterized by an absorption coefficient of ~ 12,500 cm-1 and resistivities of ~ 0.08 to 0.5 Ω-cm. With annealing at 800°C, the resistivity decreased to 350 μΩ-cm, while …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In the analysis of power-electronic-based energy conversion systems, it is important to identify the operational modes of the associated converters and inverters. However, as the number of switching elements increases, it becomes more difficult to analytically establish all possible modes of operation. In this paper, a modelling technique is described wherein a state-space representation of the overall system is generated automatically and updated dynamically as each new topology is encountered. Utilizing this approach, it becomes possible to identify the operational modes of converters and inverters based upon the cyclically repeated sequences of topologies that can be observed during steady-state operation. …
Midcourse Guidance Law With Neural Networks, Dongchen Han, S. N. Balakrishnan
Midcourse Guidance Law With Neural Networks, Dongchen Han, S. N. Balakrishnan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A neural network-based synthesis of an optimal midcourse guidance law is presented in this study. We use a set of two-neural networks; the first network called 'a critic' outputs the Lagrange's multipliers arising in an optimal control formulation and second network called 'an action network' outputs the optimal guidance/control. In this so-called 'adaptive critic' approach, the inputs to the networks are the current values of the states. This approach needs no external training. System equations, optimality conditions and the costate equations are used in conjunction with the network outputs to provide the targets for the neural networks. When the critic …

"The speed of modern electronic computers has inherent design limitations which will soon be reached. A possible substitute is the optical computer. In this project, the feasibility of the optical computer is explored by designing and building a parallel optical system. This system is used to test the basic principles that would govern a parallel optical computer. The system is based on the principle of cellular automata, which is a simulation technique used to study interactions of objects in a system. The following goals were set. The system would be based on cellular automata. A one-dimensional array with nine cells, …
Doppler Estimation Using A Coherent Ultrawide-Band Random Noise Radar, Ram M. Narayanan, Muhammad Dawood
Doppler Estimation Using A Coherent Ultrawide-Band Random Noise Radar, Ram M. Narayanan, Muhammad Dawood
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The University of Nebraska has developed an ultrawide- band (UWB) coherent random noise radar operating over the 1–2 GHz frequency range. The system achieves phase coherence by using heterodyne correlation of the received signal with a time-delayed frequency-shifted replica of the transmit waveform. Knowledge of the phase of the received signal and its time dependence due to target motion permits the extraction of the mean Doppler frequency from which the target speed can be inferred. Theoretical analysis, simulation studies, and laboratory measurements using a microwave delay line showed that it was possible to estimate the Doppler frequency from targets with …

Production And Purification Of The Heavy Chain Fragment C Of Botulinum Neurotoxin, Serotype A, Expressed In The Methylotrophic Yeast Pichia Pastoris, Karen J. Potter, Wenhui Zhang, Leonard A. Smith, Michael M. Meagher
Michael Meagher Publications
A recombinant Hc fragment of botulinum neurotoxin, serotype A (rBoNTA(Hc)), has been successfully expressed in a Mutt strain of the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris for use as an antigen in a proposed human vaccine. Fermentation employed glycerol batch, glycerol-fed batch, and methanol-fed batch phases to achieve high cell density. Induction times were short to maximize rBoNTA(Hc) production while minimizing proteolytic degradation. Concentration of rBoNTA(Hc) in yeast cell lysates was generally 1-2% of the total protein based on ELISA analysis. The Hc fragment was purified from cell lysates using a multistep ion-exchange (IEC) chromatographic process, including …
