Challenges For Human, Social, Cultural, And Behavioral Modeling, S. K. Numrich, Andreas Tolk Jan 2010

Challenges For Human, Social, Cultural, And Behavioral Modeling, S. K. Numrich, Andreas Tolk

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Today's military focus has moved away from the force-on-force battlefield of the past century and into the domain of irregular warfare and its companion security, stability, transition and reconstruction missions. With that change in focus has come a need to examine the operational environment from a wider perspective, one that includes the whole range of human experiences and circumstances. As the set of factors and list of players expands, the need for reliable modeling and simulation increases, if for no other reason than to help the human decision maker make sense of this expanded decision space. However, to do this, …

Microstructural Effects During Chemical Mechanical Planarization Of Copper, Patrick J. Andersen, Mariela N. Bentancur, Amy J. Moll, Megan Frary Jan 2010

Microstructural Effects During Chemical Mechanical Planarization Of Copper, Patrick J. Andersen, Mariela N. Bentancur, Amy J. Moll, Megan Frary

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Novel die-stacking schema using through-wafer interconnects require vias to be filled with electroplated Cu, resulting in thick copper films, and requiring an aggressive first-step CMP. This work investigates the effects of microstructure on CMP of copper films, which are not presently well understood. Bulk and local removal rates were investigated for several different microstructures. Surface orientation maps were created and the orientations of individual grains were correlated with topographical data to elucidate local removal behavior. Cu removal depends on the details of the microstructure, and certain microstructures allowed for either faster or more uniform removal of thick Cu films.

Genomics And Proteomics In Chemical Warfare Agent Research: Recent Studies And Future Applications, Patrick A. Everly, James F. Dillman Jan 2010

Genomics And Proteomics In Chemical Warfare Agent Research: Recent Studies And Future Applications, Patrick A. Everly, James F. Dillman

United States Army: Publications

Medical research on the effects of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) has been ongoing for nearly 100 years, yet these agents continue to pose a serious threat to deployed military forces and civilian populations. CWAs are extremely toxic, relatively inexpensive, and easy to produce, making them a legitimate weapon of choice for terrorist organizations. While the mechanisms of action for manyCWAshave been known for years, questions about their molecular effects following acute and chronic exposure remain largely unanswered. Global approaches that can pinpoint which cellular pathways are altered in response to CWAs and characterize long-term toxicity have not been widely used. …

Inhalation of sulfur mustard (SM), a bifunctional alkylating agent that causes severe lung damage, is a significant threat to both military and civilian populations. The mechanisms mediating its cytotoxic effects are unknown and were investigated in the present studies. Male rats Crl:CD(SD) were anesthetized, and then intratracheally intubated and exposed to 0.7–1.4 mg/kg SM by vapor inhalation. Animals were euthanized 6, 24, 48 h or 7 days post-exposure and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) and lung tissue collected. Exposure of rats to SM resulted in rapid pulmonary toxicity, including focal ulceration and detachment of the trachea and bronchial epithelia from underlying …

Kitab Al-Hadaya Wa Al-Tuhaf: A Unique Window On Islamic Textiles, Wendy Landry Jan 2010

Kitab Al-Hadaya Wa Al-Tuhaf: A Unique Window On Islamic Textiles, Wendy Landry

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

During the first millennium, a rare kind of literature evolved in the Islamic world that provides a fascinating window on the interest and importance of material objects. A unique example of this literature, entitled Kitab al-Hadaya wa al-Tuhaf [Book of Gifts and Rarities] was translated into English, annotated and published in 1996 by Kuwaiti curator and scholar Ghada al Hijjawi al-Qaddumi. It is an anthology of anecdotes referring to the period between the sixth century and the twelfth century, probably compiled in the late twelfth century by an official in the Islamic Egyptian government.

Although the historical veracity of the …

A Governance Reference Model For Service-Oriented Architecture-Based Common Data Initialization A Case Study Of Military Simulation Federation Systems, Jeremy Thomas Lanman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Military simulation and command and control federations have become large, complex distributed systems that integrate with a variety of legacy and current simulations, and real command and control systems locally as well as globally. As these systems continue to become increasingly more complex so does the data that initializes them. This increased complexity has introduced a major problem in data initialization coordination which has been handled by many organizations in various ways. Serviceoriented architecture (SOA) solutions have been introduced to promote easier data interoperability through the use of standards-based reusable services and common infrastructure. However, current SOA-based solutions do not …

Wired For War: The Robotics Revolution And Conflict In The Twenty-First Century, Frank Rosenblatt Jan 2010

Wired For War: The Robotics Revolution And Conflict In The Twenty-First Century, Frank Rosenblatt

Journal Articles

Pity the librarian who receives a copy of P.W. Singer's Wired for War and must decide where to put it. Since the book wrestles with the changing nature of warfare, it could fit in with other books on war and military affairs. It may also belong in the science fiction section, since it is largely a tribute to the vision of science fiction writers such as Isaac Asimov. Perhaps Wired for War should go alongside works by other futurist thinkers such as George Orwell and Freeman Dyson. Is it really an ethics book? A science text? Strong arguments could be …

Molecular Modeling Of Energetic Materials And Chemical Warfare Agents, Nandhini Sokkalingam Jan 2010

Molecular Modeling Of Energetic Materials And Chemical Warfare Agents, Nandhini Sokkalingam

Wayne State University Dissertations

Contamination of military sites by energetic materials and chemical warfare agents is a growing problem. To avoid health hazards associated with these compounds, it is necessary to decontaminate or remediate the contaminated sites. Effective decontamination requires knowledge of environmental fate of contaminants and the appropriate remediation methodologies. While the fate of chemical warfare agents are well studied, the impact of certain energetic materials in the environment is relatively unknown. So the current focus is determining environmental fate of Insensitive Munitions (IM) which are energetic materials that have low shock sensitivity and high thermal stability and developing detection schemes for identifying …

Simulation For Commercial Driver License Third Party Tester Testing, Henry Truong Jan 2010

Simulation For Commercial Driver License Third Party Tester Testing, Henry Truong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The advance of technology is thought to help ease the myriad tasks that are usually involved in operating equipment. Training and testing in modern times have been replacing with simulation technologies that mimic the actual live operations and testing. Many successful stories of flight simulation come from military fighter aircraft and commercial pilot programs. The possibilities of safety in saving lives, economic incentive in reducing the operational cost and reducing the carbon footprint via simulation makes simulation worth looking into. These considerations quickly boosted the transfer from live training operations to virtual and simulation, as were easily adopted in the …

The 2009 Analysis Of Information Remaining On Disks Offered For Sale On The Second Hand Market, Andy Jones, Craig Valli, Glenn S. Dardick, Iain Sutherland, G. Dabibi, Gareth Davies

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The ever increasing use and reliance upon computers in both the public and private sector has led to enormous numbers of computers being disposed of at the end of their useful life within an organisation. As the cost of computers has dropped, their use in the home has also continued to increase. In most organisations, computers have a relatively short life and are replaced on a regular basis with the result that, if not properly cleansed of data, they are released into the public domain containing data that can be relatively up to date. This problem is exacerbated by the …

Gpu Based Processing For Airborne Detection, Dheeraj Singiresu Jan 2010

Gpu Based Processing For Airborne Detection, Dheeraj Singiresu

Masters Theses

"Onboard real-time processing is highly desirable in airborne detection applications. As the data processing involved here is computationally expensive, typically high power multi-rack system is required to achieve real-time detection. Use of such hardware is often not feasible in an airborne application due to space, power and weight constraints. In this thesis, different computing architectures suitable for real-time onboard processing are compared in terms of computation speed, watts/GFLOPS, and weight/GFLOPS. A brief description of the modem GPU architecture and the current GPGPU technology is provided. GPU implementations of some computationally expensive image processing applications such as band-to-band registration for Multi …

Characterization And Design Of A Completely Parameterizable Vhdl Digital Single Sideband Modulator Circuit For Quick Implementation In Fpga Or Asic Electronic Warfare Platforms, Harold Scott Axtell

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In this work we present the design and characterization of a parameterizable Digital Single Sideband Modulator (DSSM) circuit for use with a Digital Radio Frequency Memory (DRFM) or other signal processing circuits. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) can be used as a prototyping platform for quickly verifying and hardware testing a digital circuit or system. FPGAs can also be used as an implementation platform for a digital circuit or system. A main advantage of FPGAs over that of an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) is that it can be quickly (and often dynamically) reprogrammed; whereas an ASIC can take months …

Robotic Goal-Based Semi-Autonomous Algorithms Improve Remote Operator Performance, Shawn Hunt Jan 2010

Robotic Goal-Based Semi-Autonomous Algorithms Improve Remote Operator Performance, Shawn Hunt

Wayne State University Dissertations

The focus of this research was to determine if reliable goal-based semi-autonomous algorithms are able to improve remote operator performance or not. Two semi-autonomous algorithms were examined: visual servoing and visual dead reckoning. Visual servoing uses computer vision techniques to generate movement commands while using internal properties of the camera combined with sensor data that tell the robot its current position based on its previous position. This research shows that the semi-autonomous algorithms developed increased performance in a measurable way. An analysis of tracking algorithms for visual servoing was conducted and tracking algorithms were enhanced to make them as robust …

A Structured Asic Approach To A Radiation Hardened By Design Digital Single Sideband Modulator For Digital Radio Frequency Memories, Thomas B. Pemberton Jan 2010

A Structured Asic Approach To A Radiation Hardened By Design Digital Single Sideband Modulator For Digital Radio Frequency Memories, Thomas B. Pemberton

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Digital Radio Frequency Memories (DRFM) are widely used as modules in digital signal processing. These modules can provide several forms of signal manipulation and storage capabilities. With single event effects caused by environmental radiation the need for a radiation hardened DRFM is increased. Typical radiation hardening involves the use of specialized foundries utilizing proprietary CMOS libraries that are expensive to build or adding lead packages around a chip that is expensive and add weight to the chip. An alternative radiation hardening technique is to utilize a radiation hardened by design library. This library includes digital gates that have been hardened …

An Automated Approach To A 90-Nm Cmos Drfm Dssm Circuit Design, Thomas A. Hopkins

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A digital single sideband modulator (DSSM) for a digital radio frequency memory (DRFM) was designed and implemented in a commercial 90-nm radiation-hardened-by-design (RHBD) structured ASIC by Thomas Pemberton in cite{Pemberton}. This thesis synthesized the same DSSM structure in a non-hardened 90-nm commercial process and compared the synthesis results of the two for power, delay, and area. The number of I/O bits and taps in cite{Pemberton} and this thesis were purposely made high to create a large target for radiation testing. As should be expected, the RHBD DSSM reported greater power and area. However, the RHBD power models were only estimates. …

Production And Characterization Of Novel Air Filtration Media, Elizabeth Skomra Jan 2010

Production And Characterization Of Novel Air Filtration Media, Elizabeth Skomra

All Dissertations

HEPA and ULPA filtration systems have proven to be an advantageous instrument in removing common contaminants from the air. However, an increased pressure drop due to the build-up of particulates on the filters results in its inevitable decrease in performance. Improving current filtration systems would include increasing collection efficiency all the while either maintaining or reducing the differential pressure drop in order to extend the life of the filter. One method of improving collection efficiency would be viable by increasing the amount of surface area within the filter media by glass fibers because of their inherent quality of being smaller …

A Self-Organizing Hybrid Sensor System With Distributed Data Fusion For Intruder Tracking And Surveillance, Ravishankar Palaniappan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A wireless sensor network is a network of distributed nodes each equipped with its own sensors, computational resources and transceivers. These sensors are designed to be able to sense specific phenomenon over a large geographic area and communicate this information to the user. Most sensor networks are designed to be stand-alone systems that can operate without user intervention for long periods of time. While the use of wireless sensor networks have been demonstrated in various military and commercial applications, their full potential has not been realized primarily due to the lack of efficient methods to self organize and cover the …

A New Multi-Tier Adaptive Military Manet Security Protocol Using Hybrid Cryptography And Signcryption, Atti̇la A. Yavuz, Fati̇h Alagöz, Emi̇n Anarim

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks (MANETs) are expected to play an important role in tactical military networks by providing infrastructureless communication. However, maintaining secure and instant information sharing is a difficult task especially for highly dynamic military MANETs. To address this requirement, we propose a new multi-tier adaptive military MANET security protocol using hybrid cryptography and signcryption. In our protocol, we bring novelties to secure military MANET communication for three main points: Cryptographic methods used in MANETs, hybrid key management protocols and structural organization of the military MANETs. As a new approach, we use hybrid cryptography mechanisms and Elliptic Curve Pintsov-Vanstone Signature …

Remote Sensing Applications Of Hf Skywave Radar: The Australian Experience, Stuart Anderson Jan 2010

Remote Sensing Applications Of Hf Skywave Radar: The Australian Experience, Stuart Anderson

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Australia has conducted research into over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) for almost sixty years. Early programs focused exclusively on military capabilities, such as the detection of aircraft, missiles and ships, but in 1974 a team was formed to design a new OTHR for which a remote sensing mission was proposed. Oceanic wind mapping experiments in 1977-78 yielded promising results so remote sensing became a recognised mission assigned to the new radar, known as Jindalee Stage B. This capability was progressively expanded over the period 1982-87 to include mapping of wave height and other oceanographic variables. A real-time data link to the Australian …

Specific functionalization protocols were carried out to chemically modify the surface of the CNTs for uniform dispersion and antibody conjugation in aqueous solution. Surfactant assisted dispersion of the CNTs was studied using PVP and PEG. Covalent conjugation of antibodies …

Analysis Of Distributed Denial Of Service Attacks And Countermeasures, Sampada Karandikar Dec 2009

Analysis Of Distributed Denial Of Service Attacks And Countermeasures, Sampada Karandikar

All Theses

Network technology has experienced explosive growth in the past two decades. The vast connectivity of networks all over the world poses monumental risks. The generally accepted philosophy in the security world is that no system or network is completely secure [1] which makes network security a critical concern. The work done in this thesis focuses on Distributed Denial of Service Attacks (DDoS) where legitimate users are prevented from accessing network services. Although a lot of research has been done in this field, these attacks remain one of the most common threats affecting network performance.
One defense against DDoS attacks is …

A Fast Nir Spectrometer For Examining Explosive Events: Emission Of Petn Based Explosives And H2O Absorption Method Feasibility, Scott Piecuch Dec 2009

A Fast Nir Spectrometer For Examining Explosive Events: Emission Of Petn Based Explosives And H2O Absorption Method Feasibility, Scott Piecuch

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The chemical dynamics and decomposition pathways of explosive materials are not entirely known. Measurements of chemical transients during explosive events can lead to enhanced knowledge of the detailed chemistry and eventually control of the end products; however, these measurements are often difficult to obtain due to fast time scales and harsh environments. Optical diagnostics present fast-response, minimally invasive methods for resolving properties in detonation environments and previous fast spectroscopic measurements have been recorded in the ultra-violet and visible regions. This work extends the range of such measurements to the near-infrared (NIR) through the development of a fiber-coupled NIR spectrometer utilizing …

Cyber Influence, William Hutchinson Dec 2009

Cyber Influence, William Hutchinson

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

This paper explores influence in the cyber-world and the ability and effectiveness of influence campaigns in this medium. It examines the possibilities of influence in the online world as examines the potential of mobile technologies in this area. The contentious link between influence and behavioural change is investigated. Counterinfluence in the context of radicalisation is also looked at. Whilst it is inevitable that the digital medium is and will be used for influence campaigns and will be influential regardless if there are concerted ‘campaigns’ or not, it effects in terms of behavioural change are still open to question.

A Model To Study Cyber Attack Mechanics And Denial-Of-Service Exploits Over The Internet's Router Infrastructure Using Colored Petri Nets, Lawrence M. Healy Nov 2009

A Model To Study Cyber Attack Mechanics And Denial-Of-Service Exploits Over The Internet's Router Infrastructure Using Colored Petri Nets, Lawrence M. Healy

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Internet‟s router infrastructure, a scale-free computer network, is vulnerable to targeted denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Protecting this infrastructure‟s stability is a vital national interest because of the dependence of economic and national security transactions on the Internet. Current defensive countermeasures that rely on monitoring specific router traffic have been shown to be costly, inefficient, impractical, and reactive rather than anticipatory.

To address these issues, this research investigation considers a new paradigm that relies on the systemic changes that occur during a cyber attack, rather than individual router traffic anomalies. It has been hypothesized in the literature that systemic knowledge of …
