The Mechanism Of The Electrooxidation Of Acetylene On Gold, James W. Johnson, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James Jan 1967

The Mechanism Of The Electrooxidation Of Acetylene On Gold, James W. Johnson, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Acetylene has been oxidized anodically in aqueous solutions at 80 °C on gold electrodes. It was found that the partial oxidation to CO2 was accompanied by a polymer formation. Effects of potential, acetylene partial pressure, pH, and temperature on the rate (current) were measured. A discontinuity in the Tafel curves was noted that indicated a change in the reaction mechanism with potential. The discontinuity was also pH dependent. A mechanism involving the discharge of H2O and/or OH− has been proposed that is consistent with the experimental results. © 1967, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. All rights reserved.

Determining The Transfer Matrices Of Tapered Multiwire Transmission Lines, Clyde A. Vandivort Jan 1967

Determining The Transfer Matrices Of Tapered Multiwire Transmission Lines, Clyde A. Vandivort

Masters Theses

"The advent of monolithic and integrated microelectronic circuits has aroused interest in passive multilayered thin film networks. The basic thin film network is shown in Figure 1. This structure consists of alternate resistive and dielectric layers sandwiched together. Such devices are referred to as distributed parameter RC networks. The reduction of volume and increased reliability offered by thin film devices has caused considerable effort to be extended in the analysis of their characteristics....

The incremental equivalent circuit given in Figure 2 stems directly from the above physical parameters and is the circuit used as a basis for the analysis that …

Effects Of Mixing Procedure Upon Uniformity Of Fibre Reinforced Concrete, Donald E. Nortrup Jan 1967

Effects Of Mixing Procedure Upon Uniformity Of Fibre Reinforced Concrete, Donald E. Nortrup

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes the effects of several methods of introducing wire fibres into a concrete mix upon the uniformity of wire fibre reinforced concrete. Various mechanical and manual methods of introducing the fibres were used and comparisons of the methods were based upon variability in splitting tensile strength and the quantitative distribution of the fibres as determined by visual inspection of sawed cylinders. Test results show that the tensile strength of concrete is increased appreciably by the inclusion of steel wire fibres in the mix and the uniformity of strength is similar to that of unreinforced concrete. The methods of …

Anodic Dissolution Of Zinc In Potassium Nitrate, Martin E. Straumanis, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James Jan 1967

Anodic Dissolution Of Zinc In Potassium Nitrate, Martin E. Straumanis, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The apparent valence of pure zinc dissolving anodically in 3% KNO3 was determined as a function of current density, temperature, and ultrasonic agitation. The apparent valence of zinc dissolving anodically at 24°C diminishes from 2.01 ± 0.01 at low current densities to 1.86 at about 50 ma and remains fairly constant up to about 80 ma cm−2. This valence is affected to some extent by the preparation, e.g., polishing of the electrode, but is independent of its structure (mono- or polycrystal). Ultrasonic vibrations do not influence the apparent valence at high current densities. In all cases a black film …

Annealing Characteristics Of Neutron Irradiated Silicon Transistors, J. R. Chott, C. A. Goben Jan 1967

Annealing Characteristics Of Neutron Irradiated Silicon Transistors, J. R. Chott, C. A. Goben

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When a transistor is subjected to neutron irradiation, a component of base current proportional to neutron fluence is induced. From the effects of annealing on the base and collector Currents the conclusion was drawn that there is an apparent difference in the annealing characteristics between the neutral and the space-charge regions of the semiconductor device. This study of the anomalous annealing indicates that the neutron-induced component of base current is a result of one, or a combination, of the following mechanisms: A quasi-tunneling recombination phenomena in the emitter-base space-charge region, or an influence of the p-n junction electric field on …

Dynamic Response Of Plates Due To Moving Loads, Theodore F. Raske, Alois L. Schlack Jan 1967

Dynamic Response Of Plates Due To Moving Loads, Theodore F. Raske, Alois L. Schlack

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An analysis based on linear theory is presented for determining the dynamic response and the conditions of resonance for a simply supported rectangular plate acted upon by two types of moving loads corresponding to: (1) a point force of variable magnitude oscillating about a fixed position on the plate, and (2) a point force of constant magnitude traveling in a circular orbit about a fixed position on the plate. In addition to the ordinary resonance as produced by a variable magnitude load concentrated at a fixed position on the plate, resonance of the plate may occur due to the changing …

The Anodic Dissolution Of Cadmium, James W. Johnson, E. Deng, S. C. Lai, William Joseph James Jan 1967

The Anodic Dissolution Of Cadmium, James W. Johnson, E. Deng, S. C. Lai, William Joseph James

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The anodic dissolution of cadmium has been studied in aqueous solutions containing Cl−, Br−, I−, Ac−, SO4=, and NO3− ions. The normal valence (+2) was found in all solutions with the exception of NO3−. The apparent valence (calculated) of cadmium ions in nitrate solutions varied from 1.2 to 2.0 and was found to be a function of NO3− concentration, current density, and temperature. An anodic dissolution mechanism has been proposed involving local corrosion and disintegration of the anode which is consistent with the experimental results. © 1967, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosities Of Solutions Of Linear Flexible High Polymers, Lung Yu Chou, Jacques L. Zakin Jan 1967

The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosities Of Solutions Of Linear Flexible High Polymers, Lung Yu Chou, Jacques L. Zakin

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Viscosity-concentration results in the moderately concentrated range for four samples of polyisobutylene (molecular weights of 1.3 x 104 to 1.0 x 106) in cyclohexane (concentrations up to 4.7 g./dl.) and in benzene (concentrations up to 7.0 g./dl.) at 24°C. (a theta solvent) showed molecular weight and goodness of solvent dependencies similar to those reported earlier for three other polymers. For polyisobutylene, polystyrene, and a copolymer of styrene and methyl methaerylate in good solvents, viscosity-concentration data plotted as ηsp. C[η] vs. k′[η]C fit a single curve. The linear region of this curve suggests that the Huggins equation is useful to C[η] …

Mode Analysis Of The Unsymmetrically Fed Ground-Plane Aperture, John G. Hemmann Jan 1967

Mode Analysis Of The Unsymmetrically Fed Ground-Plane Aperture, John G. Hemmann

Masters Theses

"The problem of radiation from a waveguide-fed ground-plane aperture perturbed with a wedge-shaped dielectric insert was examined more carefully. The work initiated by Blumberg was continued, using a greater range of dielectric constants and smaller increments of angle.

Aperture field measurements were made over a range of dielectric constants for each wedge angle, in order to determine the change in amplitude distribution as a function of permittivity. Aperture phase measurements were also taken for selected angles. These were used with the amplitude data to predict, using numerical integration, the far-field radiation patterns of the perturbed aperture. Far-field patterns were then …

A Study Of Film Boiling Of Liquid Nitrogen And Liquid Argon Over A Wide Pressure Range With Cylindrical Heaters, V. J. Flanigan Jan 1967

A Study Of Film Boiling Of Liquid Nitrogen And Liquid Argon Over A Wide Pressure Range With Cylindrical Heaters, V. J. Flanigan

Masters Theses

""A film boiling heat transfer study was conducted with three different diameter cylindrical copper heaters over a wide range of pressures for nitrogen and argon with the heat transfer surface in the horizontal position. The data were compared to the commonly used film boiling heat transfer relations. The common relations were found to be considerably in error for the range of variables covered in this investigation. A semi-empirical equation for corresponding states fluids which correlates the available data as a function of the reduced temperature and reduced pressure was derived and discussed"--Abstract, page iii.

An Analytic Model For The Fluxgate Magnetometer, Stanley V. Marshall Jan 1967

An Analytic Model For The Fluxgate Magnetometer, Stanley V. Marshall

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The output voltages from various fluxgate probe types are found to have the same general form, and an analytic model has been developed with which the output may be calculated. In the saturation region where the output pulse is developed, the differential permeability can be closely approximated by an exponential, dB/dH = k1Hk2, where kl and k2 are on the order of 100 and -2.0, respectively, for cores of Supermalloy or Permalloy 80. Using this model, the effect of the nature of the excitation function on output pulse amplitude and width and the effect …

A Plastic Stress Analysis Of Cylindrical Wafers Under Elastically Deformable Compression Plates, Robert L. Davis, J. W. Jackson Jan 1967

A Plastic Stress Analysis Of Cylindrical Wafers Under Elastically Deformable Compression Plates, Robert L. Davis, J. W. Jackson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper represents an analysis of the pressure distribution occurring in axially loaded cylindrical wafers with, and without, elastic radial constraints. The purpose of this report is to demonstrate the resulting stress patterns that occur in short compression specimens frequently used in determining material properties, and in the opposed-anvil, or Bridgman-type, high-pressure cells. The influence of radial constraints, material strain hardening, wafer diameter-to-height ratio, anvil or plate deflection, and the wafer-anvil interface friction on the resulting stress distributions have been examined. The integrated normal stress distribution across the specimen surface has been verified experimentally via numerous tests in which each …

Vapor-Liquid Equilibria System : Chloroform, Carbon Tetrachloride, Isopropanol, Barnet H. Bursack Jun 1966

Vapor-Liquid Equilibria System : Chloroform, Carbon Tetrachloride, Isopropanol, Barnet H. Bursack

Theses

A study was made of the vapor-liquid equilibria of the ternary system: Chloroform (CHCl3), Carbon Tetra-chloride (CCl4) and Isopropanol (C3H8O). An Othmer still was used for the equilibria determination. Refractive index and density measurements were used to determine liquid and vapor compositions. A comparison between experimental and theoretical values was made using the Margules 3-suffix ternary equations for the correlation.

It was necessary to investigate the vapor-liquid equilibria of each of the three binary systems to evaluate the techniques and equipment used and obtain new data. Only one previous investigation of the …

A Procedure For The Measurement Of Glosso-Maxillary Forces, Howard L. Lilly Jr. Jun 1966

A Procedure For The Measurement Of Glosso-Maxillary Forces, Howard L. Lilly Jr.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a clinically feasible procedure for recording the magnitudes of glosso-maxillary forces at four palatal loci using an electronic transducer system described by Lear et, al. (1965). Of particular interest was the development of a convenient and accurate calibration device for both intraoral and extraoral application. A further object of interest was the effect an acrylic carrier plate might introduce to the magnitude of force response. Finally whether or not any significant adaptation to the carrier plate or to the transducers occurs during a reasonable testing period (six to seven hours).

A calibration …

A Preliminary Experimental Study Of The Turbulence Decay In The Wake Of A Hemisphere In Free-Surface Flow, Jiin-Jen Lee May 1966

A Preliminary Experimental Study Of The Turbulence Decay In The Wake Of A Hemisphere In Free-Surface Flow, Jiin-Jen Lee

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Flows observed in open channels are usually turbulent. The word "turbulent" describes a motion in which an irregular velocity fluctuation (mixing or eddying motion) is superimposed on the main stream motion. The essential characteristic of turbulent flow is that the turbulent fluctuations are random in nature.

If Reynold's rule of averaging is used, the Navier-Stokes equations for laminar flow may be transformed into the Reynold's equations, which hold true for turbulent mean motion. The solution of Reynold's equations will properly describe turbulent flow. Unfortunately, the number of unknowns exceeds the number of equations; therefore the use of mathematical method to …

Piggery Septic System, N E. Macintyre Jan 1966

Piggery Septic System, N E. Macintyre

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ONE of the problems of intensive houses for pigs is the disposal of the dung and urine.

If proper arrangements are not made to remove this, it soon accumulates in an offensive pile at one end of the piggery, making an excellent breeding ground for flies.
