World models are being built twice, from opposite ends, without a shared theory of how the two halves should meet. One lineage grounds the world model in perception: a self-supervised, latent-predictive encoder – exemplified by Joint Embedding Predictive Architectures (JEPA) – that learns the structure of sensory experi-ence. A second, older lineage grounds the world model in cognition: an explicit, inspectable structure of entities, rules, and constraints, ranging from knowledge graphs to formal logic to physical law. Neither lineage alone has produced a world model that is simultane-ously adaptive and auditable. We argue this is not solved by picking a …

Dynamic Flood Risk Assessment For Transportation Infrastructure In Fresno, Ca, Yushin Ahn, Fayzul Pasha
Mineta Transportation Institute
Urban roadway flooding in flat metropolitan environments often shows up as small areas of standing water rather than large, flowing floods. In low-gradient urban environments, subtle micro-topographic features—such as pavement crowns, curbs, and localized depressions—often control where surface water accumulates following rainfall. Accurately identifying these localized ponding areas is important for roadway flood screening and infrastructure management. This study develops a LiDAR-based depression mapping framework to identify roadway segments susceptible to surface ponding in flat urban environments. High-resolution airborne LiDAR datasets were used to generate detailed elevation maps (down to less than a foot in resolution) from ground-classified point clouds …

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
For children from bilingual households, kindergarten can represent both an introduction to formal mathematics education and a period of increased exposure to the English language. Students may therefore be learning foundational mathematical concepts while simultaneously developing the English vocabulary used to describe those concepts. BiKi (Bilingual Math for Kindergartners) was developed to help bridge this gap through an educational application that combines visual, auditory, and interactive learning activities to reinforce mathematical vocabulary in both English and a student’s home language.
This work builds upon the existing BiKi application while maintaining its original educational goals and intended audience. The primary focus …

Semantic-Guided Diffusion Autoencoder For Medical Image Synthesis And Representation Learning, Neda Yousefi, Abbas Koochari, Azadeh Zamanifar
Makara Journal of Technology
The development of robust machine learning models for medical diagnostics is constrained by the scarcity of large, annotated imaging datasets, a challenge rooted in high acquisition costs and stringent privacy regulations. To address this, generative approaches for data synthesis have emerged as an essential tool, and this study explores the use of diffusion models to generate medical images. This study introduces a novel Diffusion Autoencoder Model (DAM) integrated with a semantic encoder framework to generate interpretable and decodable image representations. Our DAM learns disentangled latent features via its encoder, which then conditions a diffusion probabilistic model acting as the decoder, …

Bridges are constructed to facilitate the crossing of pedestrians, vehicles, or trains and are essential components of land transportation infrastructure, which is crucial for ensuring the smooth flow of traffic. As part of the reconstruction project for the south side of the Muja Muju Bridge on Jalan Kusumanegara, the Yogyakarta City Government rebuilt this section of the bridge, which had become unfit for traffic use. The area features two bridges, serving as transportation routes: the Muja Muju Bridge on the north side and the newly reconstructed bridge on the south side. The demolition of the south side of the Muja …

Early Detection Of Alzheimer’S Disease Using Federated Learning Based On Personalized Gans: A Data-Driven Approach, Iffat Fatima, Uzair Iqbal, Uzair Ishtiaq, Muhammad Burhan Ul Islam Khan
Makara Journal of Technology
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a complicated neurodegenerative disease marked by the slow worsening of memory and cognitive functions. Early detection is a key to effective disease management, but the creation of reliable machine learning models is not an easy task because medical data are limited, and there are strict privacy requirements, such as GDPR and HIPAA, that inhibit the creation of central databases. In this paper, a new privacy-saving model that combines personalized federated learning (PFL) with generative adversarial networks (GANs) is proposed to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. Under the proposed method, the synthesis of data using GAN is conducted on …

Design Of A Pneumatic Actuator-Based Solar Tracker To Address The High Costs And Energy Shortages In A Center Pivot Irrigation System In The Karbala Desert, Mustafa A. Abdul-Hussein, Jamal A.-K. Mohammed
Makara Journal of Technology
CPI systems used to spray crops in the Karbala Desert face two main problems: the cost of generating electricity with generators and the difficulty of delivering electricity from the grid to remote areas. Second, the fixed solar panels feeding some of these systems cannot produce enough electricity because they cannot track the sun’s rays. To solve these issues, appropriate actuators must be combined with these panels to form solar trackers. Due to their advantages over others, pneumatic actuators are proposed to enable the panels to constantly track the sun’s rays. This leads to the production of as much energy as …

Journal of Electrochemistry
Seawater electrolyte-based metal-air batteries exhibit great promise for marine energy supply systems. However, conventional statistical analysis methods, though applicable to seawater metal-air battery lifetime prediction, have inherent limitations of insufficient prediction accuracy and large error. Herein, a deep time-series regression framework based on InceptionTime and incorporating prior-biased attention pooling is proposed to construct a nonlinear mapping between electrochemical performance sequences and the discharge termination time of catalysts. Specifically, chronoamperometric profiles are employed to extract long-term stability features, while prior knowledge derived from linear sweep voltammetry is introduced to strengthen the attention weighting over critical potential regions. Under a nested leave-one-catalyst-out …

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis Of Core-Shell Structured Pd@Pdptcufe Recessed Truncated Octahedral Nanocrystals For Multifunctional Electrocatalysis, De-Zhong Hu, Wen-Dan Jiang, Wei Keat Ng, Jun Yang, Xiong-Wu Kang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Developing cost-efficient and durable multifunctional electrocatalysts of hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction is crucial for improving energy conversion efficiency in electrolytic water splitting electrolyzer and advancing rechargeable zinc-air batteries. Polyhedral shaped nanocrystals with well-defined crystal facets represent a type of model catalysts that enables the exploration of structure-activity relationships. However, it is still very challenging to prepare alloy nanocrystals with multiple metal components due to their complicated redox potentials and mixing enthalpy. Herein, we report a rapid microwave-assisted polyol reduction method for syntheses of core-shell Pd@PdPtCu, Pd@PdPtCuNi, Pd@PdPtCuCo and Pd@PdPtCuZn octahedral nanocrystals, and recessed truncated-octahedral …

In Situ Electrochemical Characterization Techniques For Active Hydrogen In Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction To Ammonia, Hong-Mei Li, Mei Yi, Zhao-Yu Jin, Ming-Hao Xie, Khalid M. Omer, Yong Guo, Pan-Pan Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia (NitRR) represents a sustainable pathway that integrates environmental remediation with the production of high-value ammonia. However, the activity and selectivity of this process are limited by the generation, consumption, and dynamic equilibrium of the key transient intermediate—active hydrogen (*H). Precise modulation of *H necessitates a comprehensive understanding of its behavior, which relies fundamentally on advanced in situ electrochemical characterization techniques. However, a systematic review dedicated to the rational selection and application of in situ electrochemical techniques for the specific characterization of *H in NitRR, with clear definitions of each technique's "detectable targets, quantitative accuracy, and …

The United States railway is a critical part of the national infrastructure and economy. Heatwaves are a major weather event that can cause major disruptions and affect the stable operation of the railway. Failure in part of the rail network may have a ripple effect on the rest of the network. As such, there is a need to study the effect of weather on rail networks that require re-routing. The goal of this paper is to investigate the vulnerability of the contiguous United States rail infrastructure against disruptions to operations caused by extreme heat events. This goal is achieved by …

Highways are a crucial part of the national infrastructure. As such, they are costly to construct and maintain; challenges such as deterioration, limited budgets, and cost uncertainty create a need for improved cost prediction of rehabilitation projects. This is especially true in the preliminary stage when all factors are unknown. Accordingly, this paper proposes a model to predict the cost of highway rehabilitation projects. A machine learning model is trained on large and publicly available datasets released by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Federal Reserve of Economic Data (FRED). Multi-Paradigm Contact Scheduling — Combining Automation And Flexibility In Gsaas Operations, Jake Urbanek, Giovanni Zanotti, Stefan Vlad Tudor, Giovanni Pandolfi Bortoletto
Small Satellite Conference
BACKGROUND
Ground segment operations must keep pace with increasingly demanding mission concepts of operation. For a GroundSegment-as-a-Service (GSaaS) provider, this means scheduling ground contacts against a diverse, often conflicting set of customer requirements, historically requiring bespoke scheduling logic. Leaf Line's baseline addresses this with two mechanisms: an automated Scheduler that computes guaranteed network-wide allocations 4 days ahead, and on-demand booking of unallocated capacity, first-come-first-served.
PROBLEM
Together, the baseline delivers strong service levels and network utilization, but two gaps emerged. The 4-day rolling horizon limits visibility into exact pass allocation beyond that window. And users needing specific pass times may find …

In recent years, the small satellite space economy has experienced unprecedented growth with the emergence of low-cost dedicated and rideshare launch services. The resulting proliferation of small satellites creates a high demand for low cost, efficient electric propulsion systems to perform orbital maneuvers. Hall effect thrusters (HET) and gridded ion thrusters (GIT) are the two primary electric propulsion platforms for small sat applications, and they offer distinct advantages and disadvantages. Stellant, formerly Hughes, Boeing, and L3 Harris, is developing a lowpower GIT to meet these mission needs.
HETs produce thrust primarily through a highly coupled ionization and acceleration process, whereas …
