Towards A Cybersecurity Testbed For Agricultural Vehicles And Environments, Mark Freyhof, George Grispos, Santosh Pitla, Cody Stolle
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
In today’s modern farm, an increasing number of agricultural systems and vehicles are connected to the Internet. While the benefits of networked agricultural machinery are attractive, this technological shift is also creating an environment that is conducive to cyberattacks. While previous research has focused on general cybersecurity concerns in the farming and agricultural industries, minimal research has focused on techniques for identifying security vulnerabilities within actual agricultural systems that could be exploited by cybercriminals. Hence, this paper presents STAVE – a Security Testbed for Agricultural Vehicles and Environments – as a potential solution to assist with the identification of cybersecurity …

Simulation Of Gene Regulatory Elements For Biosensing, Mallory Bates, Svetlana Harbough, Tarun Goswami
Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications
Gene regulatory studies are of significant importance in many scenarios such as mental illness. 21% of U.S adults experience mental illnesses including 1 in 4 active-duty military personnel. Mental health can be identified in the body by different biomarkers. These biomarkers potentially controlled by riboswitches, which are located in mRNA and switch “ON” or “OFF” depending on the concentration of a biomarker. In this research, a known riboswitch reengineered and its response in the presence of a biomarker investigated. We changed computationally PreQ1, a known riboswitch that has the smallest aptamer, and then experimentally tested against biomarkers, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate …
Design Improvement Of Transcatheter Aortic Valves For Aortic Stenosis Patients, Samantha K. Shoun, Ali N. Azadani
Design Improvement Of Transcatheter Aortic Valves For Aortic Stenosis Patients, Samantha K. Shoun, Ali N. Azadani
DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive
Aortic valve disease is a common condition in patients above 60 years of age and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Aortic valve stenosis is characterized by the narrowing of the aortic valve, which can be quite debilitating. This disease is treated with transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), which is a rapidly expanding alternative to open-heart surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR). Although TAVR is a less invasive than SAVR, long-term durability of the transcatheter aortic valves could be the Achilles heel of the procedure. Thus, the main objective of this research was to improve the design of transcatheter aortic …

Contributions Of Vibrational Spectroscopy To Virology: A Review, Iqra Chaudhary, Naomi Jackson, Denise Denning, Luke O'Neill, Hugh Byrne
Articles
Vibrational spectroscopic techniques, both infrared absorption and Raman scattering, are high precision, label free analytical techniques which have found applications in fields as diverse as analytical chemistry, pharmacology, forensics and archeometrics and, in recent times, have attracted increasing attention for biomedical applications. As analytical techniques, they have been applied to the characterisation of viruses as early as the 1970s, and, in the context of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, have been explored in response to the World Health Organisation as novel methodologies to aid in the global efforts to implement and improve rapid screening of viral infection. This review …
Shape Memory Polymer Foaming With Tunable Interconnectivity Using Off-The-Shelf Foaming Components, Natalie Marie Petryk
Shape Memory Polymer Foaming With Tunable Interconnectivity Using Off-The-Shelf Foaming Components, Natalie Marie Petryk
Theses - ALL
The ability to tune pore structures of gas-blown polyurethane shape memory polymer (SMP) foams easily and safely could improve their outcomes as hemostatic dressings or tissue engineering scaffolds and overall commercialization efforts. Incorporating physical blowing agents into the polymer mix can be used to tune pore size and interconnectivity without altering foam chemistry. Enovate (HFC-254fa) is a commonly used physical blowing agent in gas-blown foams, but the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers its use unacceptable because it is a hydrofluorocarbon that contributes to global warming. Here, off-the-shelf solvents accepted for use by the EPA, acetone, dimethyoxymethane (methylal), and methyl formate, …
Hybrid Double Network Cryogels Scaffold For Repair Of Local Cartilage Defect, Kaixiang Zhang
Hybrid Double Network Cryogels Scaffold For Repair Of Local Cartilage Defect, Kaixiang Zhang
Theses - ALL
Trauma or repeated injury to the joint can result in focal cartilage defects, which significantly increase the risk of osteoarthritis. Cartilage being avascular has limited self-healing capacity. The current method for treating cartilage defects at early stages involves implantation of autologous chondrocytes with or without a scaffold through invasive surgery; however, invasive surgery can bring pain to patients and post-operative infection risks. Therefore, injectable and biodegradable biomaterials have piqued people's interest. In the current research, we designed a hybrid double network (DN) cryogel by combining multi-arm PEG acrylate and alginate as two networks and crosslinking them at -20°C. Through different …
Aerodynamics And Turbulent Wake-Flow Characteristics Of Owls During Flapping Flight, Krishnamoorthy Krishnan
Aerodynamics And Turbulent Wake-Flow Characteristics Of Owls During Flapping Flight, Krishnamoorthy Krishnan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Owls exhibit unique flight capabilities in the low Reynolds number flow regime which is prone to complex viscous flow phenomena. They possess unique feather features and flexible wing structures which are postulated to help them fly nearly silently and stably at low speeds in a complex flow setting. Understanding the aerodynamics of owls could pave the way to enhance the future designs of small flying vehicles. Though it has been a focus of research over multiple decades, no conclusive agreement has been attained on the aerodynamic mechanisms associated with owl flight. Particularly, the aerodynamics of flapping owl flight is severely …
Atomistic Investigation Of Nucleosomal H3 Histone Tail In Unmodified And Epigenetically Modified States, Kathryn Piston
Atomistic Investigation Of Nucleosomal H3 Histone Tail In Unmodified And Epigenetically Modified States, Kathryn Piston
Dissertations - ALL
Epigenetics is a growing area of research that could potentially unlock the understanding of questions like how and why we develop certain diseases, how we age, how we inherit certain traits and even how our species evolves. Epi is a prefix meaning above, referring to chemical tags that sit above your genetics and dictate gene expression. Although there are many known links between certain epigenetic tags and diseases like cancer, the molecular mechanisms behind these links remains elusive. Gaining a novel understanding of the behavior of key biological targets for cancer like the histone H3 tail motivated this work. Histone …
Application Of Bismuth Oxychloride As A Colorimetric Uv Sensor Material, Kyle James Troche
Application Of Bismuth Oxychloride As A Colorimetric Uv Sensor Material, Kyle James Troche
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Sunlight contains about 9% UV radiation with roughly one-third of it penetrating the atmosphere and reaching the Earth’s surface. UV radiation from the sun is classified into three different types: UVA (315- 499 nm), UVB (280- 314nm), and UVC (100- 279 nm). Prolonged exposure to artificial UV radiation or direct sunlight can still induce many adverse effects such as sunburn, weakening of the immune system, and skin cancer. A wide variety of photoresistor, photodiode and colorimetric UV sensors are currently being researched to help monitor UV radiation. Our research is focused on developing a colorimetric UV sensor that is inherently …
Development Of New, Diverse Triggering Mechanisms Of Shape Memory Polymers For Cell Mechanobiology Studies, Mark Macios
Development Of New, Diverse Triggering Mechanisms Of Shape Memory Polymers For Cell Mechanobiology Studies, Mark Macios
Theses - ALL
Over the past decade, several shape-memory polymer (SMP) substrates capable of changing topography under cell-culture conditions have been developed for the study of cell mechanobiology. Most initial reports of cytocompatible SMP platforms employed thermal triggering under ambient heating conditions, which, especially in hydrated environments, is a slow process that generally takes several minutes to a few hours. Also, biocompatible SMPs initially featured recovery temperatures too high for cells to maintain viability during the thermal trigger. To overcome the limitations of ambient thermal heating triggered shape recovery, the goal of this thesis was to develop new cytocompatible SMPs that can trigger …
Motion Field Integrated Reconstruction Using Deep Learning For Mr And Pet/Mr Respiratory Motion Correction, Sihao Chen
Motion Field Integrated Reconstruction Using Deep Learning For Mr And Pet/Mr Respiratory Motion Correction, Sihao Chen
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Since motion is unavoidable in clinical human imaging studies, motion correction in PET and MRI has long been of interest for the liver/lung imaging community. Respiratory motion, the most crucial source of motion in body imaging, affects thoracic organs and the upper/lower abdomen. In MRI, motion can severely blur the images and create artifacts due to incorrect sampling of k-space data in the Fourier domain. In PET imaging, the periodic respiratory motion negatively impacts the detection of small lesions and quantification of PET tracer uptake values. Typically, breath-holding is used in clinical MR scans. However, breath-holding limits spatial coverage and …
Enhancing Pet Functionalities With Novel Geometries And Multimodal Imaging Techniques, Suranjana Samanta
Enhancing Pet Functionalities With Novel Geometries And Multimodal Imaging Techniques, Suranjana Samanta
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Positron emission tomography (PET) is a highly sensitive imaging modality that can provide in vivo quantitative information of biological processes at a biochemical level. The majority of PET systems have a ring geometry where the detectors fully encircle an axial section of a patient to provide whole-body imaging capability using multiple bed positions. However, these clinical whole-body PET systems are limited in terms of both image resolution and system sensitivity. To achieve a high resolution, customized geometries which trade global utility for application specific performance (breast, small animals etc.) imaging probes may be utilized. In some cases, an application-specific PET …

Interpreting Uterine Contractions Using Physiological Models And Statistical Signal Processing, Uri Abraham Goldsztejn
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Pregnancy and labor are important stages in every mother and child’s life. Unfortunately, complications during pregnancy and labor are common. Every day, globally, about 800 mothers and 7000 newborns in their first month of life die from medical complications. Additionally, these complications result in about 5000 stillbirths daily around the world. Preterm births, labor dystocia, and postpartum hemorrhage are leading causes of maternal and child morbidity and mortality and are associated with inappropriate uterine contractile activity. Preterm births, i.e., those that occur before completing 37 weeks of gestation, are a leading cause of child morbidity and mortality. Preterm birth are …
Multi-Dimensional Single-Molecule Nanoscopy: Fundamental Limits And Novel Approaches, Oumeng Zhang
Multi-Dimensional Single-Molecule Nanoscopy: Fundamental Limits And Novel Approaches, Oumeng Zhang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Single molecules (SMs) have become important tools for studying nanoscale dynamics in biological studies since they were first optically observed in 1989. Numerous techniques, termed single molecule orientation localization microscopy (SMOLM), have been developed to measure the position and orientation of SMs. Due to the challenging signal-to-background ratio (SBR) in typical SM experiments, it is critical to understand whether an imaging system is optimal for a specific target sample. However, the maximum theoretical limit of measurement performance has yet to be quantified. In Chapter 3. We first develop a mathematical framework to compute the accuracy limit in measuring the rotational …

Resistive Pulse Sensing Of Protein Unfolding And Transport In Solid-State Nanopores, Jugal Saharia
Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations
Solid-state nanopore sensors have attracted considerable attraction as a tool for solution-based single-molecule studies and have been successfully utilized for characterization of biomolecules such as nucleic acids, proteins, glycans, viruses, etc. Among these, characterization of proteins has been more challenging due to their charge heterogeneity and the complex energy landscape associated with different protein conformations. Presented in this thesis is the fabrication of solid-state nanopores and their application for characterizing proteins and understanding their transport through nanopores. Fabrication of nanometer-sized pores in SixNy membranes was achieved using the conventional controlled dielectric breakdown method as well as a …
Enhancing Optical And Thermal Properties Of Nanofibrous Films Inspired By The White Beetle Scale, Bokyung Park
Enhancing Optical And Thermal Properties Of Nanofibrous Films Inspired By The White Beetle Scale, Bokyung Park
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
The Cyphochilus white beetle has received significant attention recently for its exceptional visible-light-scattering properties, owing to the beetle scale's anisotropic nano-fibrillar network structure. Inspiration from the remarkable optical properties of these biological species has directed research efforts to fabricating biomimetic nano-fibrillar structures with polymer materials. In this work, electrospun silk fibroin polymer films reproduce the white beetle scale's anisotropic nature to draw on its optical scattering properties and further improve the radiative-cooling capabilities of silk fabrics. An anisotropically restructured silk film with a mean fiber diameter of a few hundred nanometers substantially increases optical scattering strength in the visible spectrum …
A Microfluidic Assay For Single Cell Bacterial Adhesion Studies Under Shear Stress, Amanda Trusiak
A Microfluidic Assay For Single Cell Bacterial Adhesion Studies Under Shear Stress, Amanda Trusiak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study of bacterial adhesion to host cells is important in understanding bacterial pathogenesis and developing new therapeutic approaches. Here, we studied bacterial adhesion under shear stress using a novel microfluidic method. Specifically, the adhesion of a uropathogenic E. coli strain (FimHOn, ATCC 700928/CFT073) to mannose-modified substrates was studied under flow conditions. The FimHOn E. coli strain expresses FimH which is a mannose-specific adhesin found on the fimbriae that binds to glycoproteins on the epithelium. We developed a microfluidic method that mimics bacterial adhesion to urothelial cells. First, the microfluidic channels were modified by sequentially adsorbing BSA-mannose and BSA onto …
Investigating The Effect Of Dissolved Oxygen-Assisted Corneal Cross-Linking (Cxl) On Porcine Corneas, Julianni Dar
Investigating The Effect Of Dissolved Oxygen-Assisted Corneal Cross-Linking (Cxl) On Porcine Corneas, Julianni Dar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Corneal cross-linking is a clinical procedure that is known to stop the progression of keratoconus, an eye disease that affects the cornea’s structure, ultimately leading to vision loss in its advanced stages. The typical treatment plan includes riboflavin and UV-A exposure in the hope to increase the mechanical properties of the cornea. There are two types of CXL pathways, with Type-II CXL requiring oxygen. Naturally, the dissolved oxygen is limited in the cornea; therefore, limiting the effect of Type-II CXL. This study proposes to improve the Type-II CXL contribution by integrating dissolved oxygen during the standard CXL treatment used in …
Photocatalytic Degradation Of Organic Contaminants By Titania Particles Produced By Flame Spray Pyrolysis, Noah Babik
Photocatalytic Degradation Of Organic Contaminants By Titania Particles Produced By Flame Spray Pyrolysis, Noah Babik
Theses and Dissertations
Advanced oxidation of organic pollutants with TiO2 photocatalysts is limited due to the wide bandgap of TiO2, 3.2 eV, which requires ultraviolet (UV) radiation. When nanosized TiO2 is modified by carbon doping, charge recombination is inhibited and the bandgap is narrowed, allowing for efficient photodegradation under visible light. Here, we propose a flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) technique to create TiO2. The facile process of FSP has been successful in preparing highly crystalline TiO2 nanoparticles. Using the same procedure to deposit TiO2 onto biochar, the photocatalyst was doped by the carbonaceous material. The morphology, crystalline and electronic structure of the FSP …

Theses and Dissertations
Unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) are being explored for use in military domains. Military UGVs operate in complex off-road environments. Vehicle mobility forecasting plays an important role in understanding how and where a vehicle can operate. Traditional mobility forecasting has been done using an analytical model known as the NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM). There has been a push to extend the forecasting capabilities of NRMM by integrating more simulation methods. Simulation enables the repeated testing of UGVs in scenarios that would be difficult or dangerous to study in real world testing. To accurately capture UGV performance in simulation, the operating …

Receptor-Doped Organic Transistors: Transducing Anion Binding From Mixed Ionic-Electronic Transport, Anthony Benasco
Receptor-Doped Organic Transistors: Transducing Anion Binding From Mixed Ionic-Electronic Transport, Anthony Benasco
Dissertations
Organic semiconductors based on π-conjugated polymers show remarkable properties such as high tolerance to structural defects, low processing temperature requirements, biocompatibility, ease of fabrication, and tunable properties. Conjugated polymers integrated into device arrays can exhibit collective properties sensitive to minor perturbations in the surrounding media. However, these devices rely on serendipitous sensitivity to the analyte of interest, and strategies for specific detection remain a considerable change. There remains a compelling, global need for technologies to monitor phosphate due to its prevalence in agricultural runoff, leading to fish kills and economic decline for commercial and recreational fisheries. The strong hydration energies …
