Studies On Air Injection In A Wastewater-Fed Subsurface Drip Irrigation System, Henry A. Gonzalez Hernandez Jul 2022

Studies On Air Injection In A Wastewater-Fed Subsurface Drip Irrigation System, Henry A. Gonzalez Hernandez

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In 2020, the Ogallala High Plains Aquifer supplied irrigation water for approximately 3.6 million hectares in Nebraska, making it the most irrigated state in the United States. Although Nebraska is highly dependent in groundwater, locations included in the Gering-Fort Laramie Irrigation District (border of Nebraska and Wyoming) rely on surface water resources. In addition to these conventional water sources, using non-conventional alternatives for crop production can be just as important during water shortage times such as the one that e occurred in 2019 with the collapse of the Goshen/Gering-Fort Laramie Canal. Feedlot runoff presents a great opportunity in Nebraska, but …

Development Of A Decellularized Hydrogel Composite And Its Application In A Novel Model Of Disc-Associated Low Back Pain In Female Sprague Dawley Rats, David Lillyman Jul 2022

Development Of A Decellularized Hydrogel Composite And Its Application In A Novel Model Of Disc-Associated Low Back Pain In Female Sprague Dawley Rats, David Lillyman

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Chronic low back pain is a global socioeconomic crisis compounded by an absence of reliable, curative treatments. The predominant pathology associated with chronic low back pain is degeneration of intervertebral discs in the lumbar spine. During degeneration, nerves can sprout into the intervertebral disc tissue and be chronically subjected to inflammatory and mechanical stimuli, resulting in pain. Pain arising from the intervertebral disc, or disc-associated pain, is a complex, multi-faceted disorder which necessitates valid animal models to screen therapeutics and study pathomechanisms of pain.

While many research teams have created animal models of disc degeneration, the translation of these platforms …

Efficiency Of Bank Filtration In The Removal Of Cyanotoxins Under Different Levels Of Nutrients, Luke Walkenhorst Jul 2022

Efficiency Of Bank Filtration In The Removal Of Cyanotoxins Under Different Levels Of Nutrients, Luke Walkenhorst

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are an increasing concern not only in Nebraska, but across the world. Increasing global temperatures in conjunction with overuse of synthetic fertilizers are leading causes to the increasing frequency and concern of HABs. In the present work, the effectiveness of simulated bank filtration (BF), as an economical water treatment option, to remove cyanotoxins under different levels of nutrients (nitrates and phosphates) was investigated. Vertical flow-through columns pre-acclimated with two levels of nutrients (e.g., nitrate and phosphate—10 vs. 50 mg/L) were exposed to two different levels of cyanotoxins (10 vs. 75 μg/L). Results from the study confirmed …

Simulating Sub-Threshold Communication Channels Through Neurons, Richard Maina

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Molecular Communication is an emerging paradigm with the potential to revolutionize the technology behind wearable and implantable devices and the broad range of functions they support, from tracking physical activity to medical diagnostics. This can be achieved through intra-body communication networks that take advantage of natural biological processes as a means of transmitting, propagating and receiving information. In this thesis we focus particularly on using the neuron as a means to facilitate information transfer for interconnected wearable or implantable devices through a technique known as sub-threshold electrical stimulation. We develop upon a prior work by introducing a linear model of …

Understanding The Role Of Antioxidant Nanoparticles In Improving The Outcome Of Secondary Injury In Traumatic Brain Injury, Aria W. Tarudji

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Following traumatic brain injury (TBI), excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) and other free radicals are released, inducing the cascade of secondary injury that exacerbate the outcomes of TBI. Antioxidant nanoparticles (ANPs) have shown promising outcomes in reducing the progression of TBI, which may be due to the higher accumulation and retention of ANPs in the injured brain. However, there is limited knowledge of: 1) antioxidant activities needed in TBI treatment, 2) correlation between longer retention, bioavailability, and target engagement with antioxidant treatments, and 3) sexual dimorphism to ANP treatments.

This dissertation assesses multiple ANPs with various scavenging activities and durations …

Stratospheric Effects On Uv, Speed Of Sound, Pressure, And Temperature, Joshua V. Chis, Joana Diaz, Brianna E. Ortiz, Imani G. Robertson, Jelani A. Shadd

DePaul Discoveries

The atmosphere is composed of several layers, each with its own distinct environment varying in temperature, pressure, and levels of UV radiation. Quantifying these varying parameters proves to be useful in understanding atmospheric composition in greater detail. Variance in the composition of the atmosphere allows for the study of the evolution of physical phenomena at different altitudes. Our group quantified this variance using a high-altitude weather balloon and designed an experimental method to observe the nature of sound propagation through varying altitudes. The goal was to develop an altitude-dependent model of the speed of sound by using an open-air, microcontroller-based …

Coal is the main source of energy in China and the most important driver of our development for a long time. It is predicted that coal is going to be the main energy source for our social and economic development in the future. However, the long-term coal mining activities in China have caused serious damage to the ecological environment and comprehensive ecological restoration is urgently needed. At present, most coal mine ecological restoration is limited within a small scale in China, such as one or several mine areas, lacking of ecological restoration planning at the national spatial level, and corresponding …

Electric Field Driven Co-Assembly And Transport Of Colloids Using Active-Passive Interaction, Brishty Deb Choudhury Jul 2022

Electric Field Driven Co-Assembly And Transport Of Colloids Using Active-Passive Interaction, Brishty Deb Choudhury

LSU Master's Theses

Over the past few decades, the out-of-equilibrium transport and assembly of colloidal particles have been drawing significant interest due to their myriad applications in biology, engineering, and physics. In the absence of any external force, micro and nanoparticles perform Brownian motion in dispersion and are termed as passive colloids. In contrast, active colloids are a class of particles where a net imbalance of fluid flow around their surface drives their net migration in space when subjected to an external electric field. While several studies have shown the ability to program the dynamics of active colloids using an external electric field, …

Characterization Of In Vivo Damage On Retrieved Total Shoulder Glenoid Liners, Eric Cheatwood, Gerard Simon, Lynn Crosby, Tarun Goswami

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

An attempt was made to retrieve glenoid liners from revision surgery to undertake a retrospective study to measure the resulting in vivo damage. Since the glenoid liners are circumferential, the curvature changes at every point in the component, an “assisting arm” was designed to hold the liner firmly, thus allowing accurate microscopic measurements. We characterized the damage in terms of pitting, embedded debris, complete fracture, abrasion, deformation, delamination, burnishing, grooving, and scratching that took place mutually exclusively. This study of 26 liners showed embedded debris was the most underrated damage mode found on the liners, followed by pitting and abrasion, …

Development Of A Configurable Real-Time Event Detection Framework For Power Systems Using Swarm Intelligence Optimization, Umar Farooq Jul 2022

Development Of A Configurable Real-Time Event Detection Framework For Power Systems Using Swarm Intelligence Optimization, Umar Farooq

Dissertations and Theses

Modern power systems characterized by complex topologies require accurate situational awareness to maintain an adequate level of reliability. Since they are large and spread over wide geographical areas, occurrence of failures is inevitable in power systems. Various generation and transmission disturbances give rise to a mismatch between generation and demand, which manifest as frequency events. These events can take the form of negligible frequency deviations or more severe emergencies that can precipitate cascading outages, depending on the severity of the disturbance and efficacy of remedial action schema. The impacts of such events have become more critical with recent decline in …

Advance In Contextualizing Focal Structure Sets In Complex Network Analysis, Mustafa Alassad Jul 2022

Advance In Contextualizing Focal Structure Sets In Complex Network Analysis, Mustafa Alassad

Theses and Dissertations

Focal Structures are key sets of individuals who may be responsible for online socially minded events, protests, or leading citizen engagement efforts on social media networks. Discovering focal structure sets who able to promote online social campaigns is important, but complex, as they are typically active locally, globally, and acting unlike central users and influencers, focal structure sets can influence large social media networks. Researchers applied a greedy algorithm to discover focal structure sets in social media networks. However, the outcomes were lacking on the users’ activities and interests that made the analysis incomplete. In this research, I present a …

Mybody Safety System, Diego Draguicevich, Nicholas Rodriguez Jul 2022

Mybody Safety System, Diego Draguicevich, Nicholas Rodriguez

Discovery Day - Prescott

To any university, the safety of students, faculty, and staff when on campus is paramount. To enhance safety, many campuses have “safety stations” of some sort scattered throughout. However, campuses such as Embry-Riddle Prescott also have hiking trails nearby. Safety pillars on hiking trails would be prohibitively expensive to build and maintain, and would also be less useful due to a longer response time for security officers. The MyBody System seeks to resolve these issues by introducing a system which is affordable, self-enclosed, solar powered and easy to maintain. The system would achieve this via custom wireless speakers disguised as …

Thermal Analysis Of The Temperature Gradient Across Pintle Injector Face, Zoe Brand Jul 2022

Thermal Analysis Of The Temperature Gradient Across Pintle Injector Face, Zoe Brand

Discovery Day - Prescott

Proper analysis of the temperature gradient across the pintle injector face is a complicated surface to acquire a reading from. Complications arise from the extreme temperatures seen on the combustion side mixed with the ambient temperatures seen on the fuel side of the injector. The orientation of temperature sensor placement is critical to mitigate hot spots and not disrupt the thermal flow through the injector face. The installment of the temperature sensors is also a critical issue since a new medium would need to be added to keep the sensor in place. The goal of this research is to figure …

Discovery Day - Prescott

Eaglenautics is an engineering club affiliated with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Every year, Eaglenautics participates in the SAE Aero West Design Competition. This competition challenges teams to design a competitive R/C scale aircraft from the ground up. Eaglenautics tackles this challenge by using a modified design-build-fly (DBF) process by adding a simulation step after the design step. Simulation software allows for a faster convergence to a design before the build process starts. Eaglenautics utilizes simulation programs like XFLR5 and OpenVSP to aid with the design of the aircraft to save time building multiple aircraft iterations. This process is especially helpful for …

Effects Of Equivalence Ratio During Shutdown Of A Rocket Engine On Hardware Longevity, Benjamin Black Jul 2022

Effects Of Equivalence Ratio During Shutdown Of A Rocket Engine On Hardware Longevity, Benjamin Black

Discovery Day - Prescott

During the shutdown or purge period after firing of a rocket engine it is critical to understand what equivalence ratios are desirable and implement a shutdown sequence so that the hardware is subjected to the lowest thermal and mechanical loading. Furthermore, it is essential that hazards to the test technicians caused by this method be minimized. The initial study was conducted into combustion mechanics, to understand how the reactants would ideally behave at varying equivalence ratios and in both pre-mixed and diffusion flame combustion. Using this foundation an analytical model for a Propane-Oxygen flame was created and tested using a …

Proposal To Augment U.S. Army Lsa And Uars, Cameron Beard Jul 2022

Proposal To Augment U.S. Army Lsa And Uars, Cameron Beard

Discovery Day - Prescott

The U.S. Army currently has a gap in its aerial reconnaissance capabilities, with the OH-58D Kiowa completing its phase transition to the AH-64E. Since the Army has done away with its rotary-wing scout aircraft, it currently relies on the AH-64E attack helicopter (an aircraft not designed for such a role), in tandem with UAS RQ- 7Bs and MQ-1C Grey Eagle. These aircraft use the MUM-T (Manned-Unmanned Teaming) system, which allows AH-64E pilots to control the camera and weaponry of the drones while both aircraft are in flight. The draw back to this system lies in two categories; 1) the inability …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Canopy cover (CC) is an important indicator for crop development. Currently, CC can be estimated indirectly by measuring leaf area index (LAI), using commercially available hand-held meters. However, it does not capture the dynamics of CC. Continuous CC monitoring is essential for dry edible beans production since it can affect crop water use, weed, and disease control. It also helps growers to closely monitor “yellowness”, or senescence of dry beans to decide proper irrigation cutoff to allow the crop to dry down for harvest. The goal of this study was to develop a device – CanopyCAM, containing software and hardware …
