Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
During the migration of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) towards the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido, Japan, the convergence of coastal currents results in the formation of intricate water temperature structures. However, the impact of this phenomenon on the behavioral tendencies of chum salmon remains largely unexplored. In 2012 and 2013, we conducted a study to document the vertical water temperature profiles and uninterrupted swimming patterns of homing chum salmon in the coastal waters surrounding the Shiretoko Peninsula. The results indicated that chum salmon exhibited a preference for avoiding thermoclines characterized by rapidly decreasing water temperatures. They were predominantly observed swimming either …

In previous literature, several computational methods have been proposed to analyze collision risks for vessels navigating at sea, most of which rely on the calculation of DCPA and TCPA between two vessels. However, this study adopts an enhanced version of the Vessel Conflict Ranking Operator (VCRO) to assess vessel collision risks. This approach not only considers the relative distance and relative velocity between two vessels but also takes their relative aspect into account. This methodology was applied to real-world vessels’ dynamic data collected through AIS. From a near-collision perspective, it identifies high-risk areas near Keelung water where commercial vessels and …

Cardiomyocyte-Specific Modified Mrna For Myocardial Regeneration In A Porcine Myocardial Infarction Model, Jiacheng Sun
All ETDs from UAB
The inability of adult mammalian cardiomyocytes (CMs) to undergo cell renewal following ischemic injury stands as a major impediment to heart function recovery and contributes to heart failure (HF). Current therapeutic approaches do not offer an effective approach of reactivating CM cell division to prevent HF in humans. Recognizing this challenge, gene therapy has emerged as a promising approach to promote CM proliferation and enhance cardiac repair. A particularly notable approach is the utilization of modified mRNA (modRNA), which provides a safe, controlled, transient, non-viral, and clinically relevant means of gene delivery. The study was conducted using a novel cardiomyocyte …
Mechanisms Linking The Circadian Clock To Cardiac Physiology, Lamario J. Williams
Mechanisms Linking The Circadian Clock To Cardiac Physiology, Lamario J. Williams
All ETDs from UAB
Rationale: Cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in America. Many aspects of both cardiovascular physiology (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate) and pathophysiology (e.g., myocardial infarctions, sudden cardiac death) exhibit time-of-day dependent fluctuations (termed diurnal variations). Circadian clocks consist of transcriptional feedback cascades directly modulating expression of genes involved in processes such as metabolism, signaling, and ion transport. Interestingly, genetic deletion of a core circadian clock component in the heart (cardiomyocyte-specific Bmal1 knockout mice) leads to chronic induction of the transcriptional repressor E4 Promoter-Binding Protein 4 (E4BP4) associated with early-onset dilated cardiomyopathy, metabolic inflexibility, and electrophysiologic disturbances. …

The Effects Of Alzheimer's Disease-Associated Variants And Ligands On The Structure And Function Of Trem2, Hunter Byron Dean
All ETDs from UAB
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a devastating, complex form of dementia. Contributions from genetics make up almost 70% of a person’s risk of developing AD, but the mechanisms by which this occurs are not well understood. Attempts to tease apart the risk contributions from individual genes have identified lipid processing and activation of innate immunity as convergent pathways for many of the known genetic risk factors. One of the strongest known risk factors, TREM2, codes for a transmembrane receptor that activates a protective immune response when it detects bound lipids. Variants in TREM2 that control AD risk have been identified, but …

Improved Myocardial Infarct Repair Via Cardiac Tissue Engineering And Modified Rna, Lu Wang
All ETDs from UAB
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in the United States and the world. Myocardial infarction (MI) happens when there is an occlusion in the blood vessel. Cardiomyocytes (CM) die quickly after MI and are replaced by a fibrotic scar. Since adult mammalian cardiomyocytes have a limited capacity to regenerate, the damages induced by MI usually deteriorate into more severe symptoms such as heart failure. In order to achieve regeneration of the cardiomyocytes, numerous therapies have been proposed, including cellular therapy and CM cell cycle re-entry. During this dissertation study, we focused on improving myocardial infarct repair via cardiac …

Automated Structural Health Monitoring Of Pavements Using Google Street View Images, Ebisidor Jeremiah Agberebi
All ETDs from UAB
The Department of Transportation traditionally employed a structural health monitoring approach that involved training personnel to report the existing conditions of roadways. However, this approach is accompanied by huge costs that range from onboarding, vehicular equipment & maintenance cost, environmental costs from CO2 emission, safety costs, and the cost of errors made by personnel as each inspector would exercise his/ her discretion in analyzing the condition of the roadway. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt a more efficient and effective approach to SHM. The incorporation of google street view images [‘GSV’ a Google roadway street data repository, with high-resolution images], …

Mechanical stimulation has been found to be an important regulator of nearly all biological processes, from maintaining normal homeostatic conditions to promoting pathological mechanisms of multiple diseases including cancer. While our knowledge of cancer continues to grow, our current models often lack the biophysical forces that are present in the body which could explain why numerous promising therapeutic agents discovered in research fail to translate into clinical efficacy. This study aims to demonstrate that breast cancer progression is mediated by strains in the tumor microenvironment (TME) in conjunction with trans-membranous glycoprotein receptor, CD44. There are many different sources of strain …

Automatic Reconstruction Of Skull Implants Using Deep Learning Approach, Thatchapatt Kesornsri
Automatic Reconstruction Of Skull Implants Using Deep Learning Approach, Thatchapatt Kesornsri
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Skull reconstruction is the process of designing and manufacturing implants for defective skulls. It is an important step in the process of cranioplasty, which is the surgical repair of skull defects or deformities. Cranioplasty is frequently required following traumatic brain injuries, tumor removals, or other neurosurgical procedures that involve the removal of a portion of the skull. Traditional methods of implant design frequently involve manual 3D modeling, which can be complicated, time-consuming, and susceptible to human error. Automated implant design techniques, on the other hand, use advanced imaging technologies and deep learning to automatically generate customized implants. Recent skull reconstruction …

Climate change is driven by CO2 emissions that poses significant environmental challenges. Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) offers a solution by converting CO2 into valuable products. One promising approach is methanol production, where CO2 and hydrogen react to form methanol. In this research, CO2-to-methanol process was simulated by using Aspen Plus software. CO2 source is captured from flue gas emitted at power plant with capacity 5,267,687.04 tonne/year and H2 source is obtained from proton-exchanger water electrolysis. Feed preparation by heated to 200°C, 220°C, 240°C, and 260 °C and 50, 60, 70 and 80 bar of pressure fed to a reactor …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Human hands are unparalleled in their dexterity, precision, and versatility, making them ideal models for robotic systems. Conventional robotic hands with standard joints cannot fully replicate human hand biomechanics, often resulting in increased weight, cost, and complexity. The primary objective is to develop a robotic finger that closely mimics anthropomorphic characteristics using computer-aided design (CAD) and rapid prototyping technology and to analyze its force and motion behaviors. The underactuated hybrid design combined soft and rigid elements and emphasizes passive adaptability to achieve dexterity. Rolling contact joints were applied to replicate varied rotational axis biomechanics. Springs and tendon routes were integrated …
