Sugar content is a superior quality indicator for the post-harvesting and ripening status of climacteric fruits. Total soluble solids (TSS) represented by °Brix index is a measure of the sugar content. The conventional way to measure TSS is by invasive (IN) technique using manual or digital refractometers. While non-invasive (NIN) infrared refractometer devices have been developed in recent years for various agricultural and food science applications, its accuracy to measure fruit TSS directly is not straightforward, as the device is only dedicated to uses for a specific fruit. This study aims to investigate the suitability of the use of a …

Cellular Structure Mediated Dislocation Regulation In Additively Manufactured Refractory High Entropy Alloy, Changxi Liu, Lechun Xie, Lai-Chang Zhang, Liqiang Wang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
A Ti1.5Nb1Ta0.5Zr1Mo0.5 (TNTZM) refractory high entropy alloy (HEA) with a cellular structure was successfully fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). Compression testing and cyclic deformation testing results revealed that, in the cellular structure, the cell walls could store dislocations. Furthermore, the local chemical order (LCO) plays a crucial role in controlling dislocations within the cell wall region. The LCO not only facilitates dislocation slip but also generates additional lattice distortion upon stress-induced LCO destruction to enable dislocation pinning. This work offers novel insights into the microstructure of additively manufactured refractory HEAs and uncovers a distinct dislocation regulation mechanism.

Datum–Wise Learning And Inference For Supervised Classification, Sachini Piyoni Ekanayake Ekanayake Mudiyanselage
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Traditional supervised classification typically involves assigning a label to a single variable, considering a common subset of features for all the instances, and employing a single classifier. However, in many real–world applications like behavioral analysis or insurance recommendation, a data instance is described by a set of related variables such as physical activity and emotion, or driving quality and accident severity. At the same time, these variables are not directly observable but can be inferred via noisy but costly features. Specifically, access to all features is prohibitive due to cost, invasiveness, or limited resources. Finally, while using a single classifier …
A 3d Co-Culture Model Of Senescent Cell Burden And Salivary Gland Fibrosis, Stephen Rose
A 3d Co-Culture Model Of Senescent Cell Burden And Salivary Gland Fibrosis, Stephen Rose
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Patients with head and neck cancer often suffer collateral radiation damage to the salivary glands, leading to fibrosis. Histological examinations indicate that radiation encourages fibrosis by promoting cellular changes leading to both senescent and myofibroblast phenotypes, coupled with a significant loss of regenerative and acinar cells. Chronic hypofunction remains a primary concern, even with modified radiation approaches to sparing salivary glands. Current treatments primarily offer symptomatic relief without rectifying irreversible glandular tissue damage. This limitation arises, in part, from a deficiency in predictive preclinical models to study this multifaceted problem.
We introduce a 3D in vitro microtissue model to address …

The water hyacinth (WH) was chosen because the WH is fast-growing and the most toxic aquatic plant in the world. Therefore, this work aims to apply these WHE to be a precursor in the biosynthesis of ZnO NPs (ZnOBio-NPs) based on the research of a sustainable environment. The ZnO NPs synthesized by the WHE were investigated for their antibacterial and photocatalytic activities. …

Due to several limitations of acetylated starch film for wound dressing applications such as low mechanical properties and no antibacterial activity, acetylated starch film was, therefore, modified by different contents of κ-carrageenan and mandelic acid. Infrared spectra confirmed the presence of κ-carrageenan and mandelic acid in the modified acetylated starch films. In addition, the decreased crystallinity of the carrageenan modified acetylated starch films led to more smooth film, as observed by scanning electron images. Besides, the addition of various amounts of κ-carrageenan in the modified acetylated starch films caused the improvement of mechanical properties, moisture uptake, water vapor transmission rate …

Structural, Magnetic, and Dielectric investigations on the “CuX Zn(1-X) Fe2O4” X with stoichiometry (X=0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1) were synthesized by solution combustion method using Aloe Vera extraction. The X-ray diffraction method was utilized to characterize the as-synthesized Cu-Zn ferrites. The results indicated the presence of cubic spinel structure with Fd‒3 m space group, and absence of other contaminates. The lattice parameter was found to increase with the increase in Zinc concentration. The patterns of TEM confirm that the particle is within the nanometer range (35 nm to 50 nm). Magnetic properties investigated by vibrating sample magnetometry, reveal that …
