An Integrated System Employing Alternate Technologies For Liquid And Solid Waste Managment For Intermediate And Small Communities, George Tchobanoglous, John E. Colt, Robert G. Smith, Samuel A. Vigil
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Over the past 20 years , a variety of alternative, and in many cases innovative, technologies have been proposed for use in waste management systems. If alternative technologies are to be adopted they must, 1) be technologically feasible, 2) minimize the use of energy and resources, 3) maximize the recovery of the energy and nutrients contained in wastewater, 4) be cost-effective, and 5) not be unnecessarily disruptive of the existing order in their implementation. Although a number of the proposed technologies have met some or all of these requirements , few of them have been widely adopted. The principal reason …
Assessment Of Corrosion And Scaling In A Low Temperature Geothermal System, David Bruce Orrell
Assessment Of Corrosion And Scaling In A Low Temperature Geothermal System, David Bruce Orrell
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
The feasibility of a low temperature geothermal system to be located in the area immediately surrounding Albuquerque, New Mexico, was assessed with respect to corrosion and scaling. Theories of corrosion and scaling were explored and an extensive literature survey was performed to predict trends and apply design criteria and guidelines regarding corrosion and scaling from other geothermal environments to the proposed geothermal installation in Albuquerque. A recirculating corrosion test loop was built, and fifteen metals were tested for general corrosion resistance in seawater at 190° F and 3 ft/sec flow velocity. Results show this test procedure to be viable and …
Maintaining A Septic Tank System, Elbert C. Dickey, Gary Hosek, Phillip W. Harlan
Maintaining A Septic Tank System, Elbert C. Dickey, Gary Hosek, Phillip W. Harlan
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Once a septic tank and absorption field are installed, you can do several things to prolong their life, thus protecting an investment which may cost $2500 or more. Here are several tips you can follow.
Often overlooked or neglected is the fact that septic tanks should be inspected at least once annually. In every properly functioning septic tank, sludge accumulates in the bottom. This sludge is composed of solid materials and must be removed periodically. If the sludge is not removed, the accumulated solids will build up in the septic tank and will begin to wash out into the absorption …
A Septic Tank System For Sewage Treatment, Elbert C. Dickey, Phillip W. Harlan, Gary Hosek
A Septic Tank System For Sewage Treatment, Elbert C. Dickey, Phillip W. Harlan, Gary Hosek
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
A properly designed, installed ao1d maintained septic tank system is an approved method of sewage treatment for private residences in rural or urban areas where public sewage treatment systems are not available. The components of a septic system are the house sewer, the septic tank and the absorption field, as illustrated in Figure 1. Sewage flows to the septic tank through the house sewer. In the septic tank, the solids are separated from the liquids, undergo anaerobic digestion and are stored as sludge at the bottom of the tank. The liquid (septic tank effluent) flows to the absorption field …
The Use Of Natural Sorbents For The Treatment Of Industrial Sludge Leachate, Mung Shium Jack Sheih
The Use Of Natural Sorbents For The Treatment Of Industrial Sludge Leachate, Mung Shium Jack Sheih
Dissertations
A sorbent treatment process has been developed which uses natural clay soils and fly ashes as sorbents in the treatment of the hazardous contaminants of potential sludge leachate emanating from industrial landfills. Natural sorbents (i.e., vermiculite, illite, kaolinite, zeolite, acidic and basic fly ashes) were evaluated for the removal of specific cations, anions, and organics from leachates generated from three industrial sludges (i.e., calcium fluoride, metal finishing, and petroleum). The laboratory results indicate that, rather than a single sorbent, a combination of acidic and basic sorbents in a layered system is required to reduce for the measurable contaminants present in …
A Study On The Growth And Asparaginase Production Of Vibrio Succinogenes In A Chemostat, Preston David Krautheim
A Study On The Growth And Asparaginase Production Of Vibrio Succinogenes In A Chemostat, Preston David Krautheim
Theses
A continuous fermentation assembly was constructed and studies on the growth of the organism, Vibrio succinogenes, and its production of asparaginase was conducted. Results were compared with that already performed on a batch system and showed that a continuous fermentation produced 31.83 I.U. enzymes/mM ammonium formate compared to 17.4 I.U. enzyme/mM formate for batch.
Some of the runs performed indicated that the organism was washing out or giving very low specific growth rates. It was decided that this was not due to operational parameters of the chemostat, but possible chemical contamination in the medium. With all things considered, a continuous …
The Effects Of Artificial Destratification On Water Quality In Hyrum Reservoir, John W. Gill
The Effects Of Artificial Destratification On Water Quality In Hyrum Reservoir, John W. Gill
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Hyrum Reservoir, Utah, was studied for one year during an artificial destratification project. Previously Drury et al. (1975) had studied Hyrum Reservoir for one year of stratified and one year of destratified conditions. The redistribution of dissolved oxygen to the hypolimnion significantly changed conditions for chemical and biological activities in the lower depths of the reservoir. The Aphanizomenon bloom increased with each year of destratification. The reservoir was changed by destratification so as to be suitable habitat for trout on a year round basis. Aerobic conditions prevented iron from being released from the sediment into the aqueous phase. In summary …

Development Of High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography Techniques For The Analysis Of Wastewater Effluent, Glenn Douglas Pierce
Development Of High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography Techniques For The Analysis Of Wastewater Effluent, Glenn Douglas Pierce
Civil Engineering ETDs
This investigation characterized a biological secondary wastewater effluent by conventional wastewater analysis parameters, evaluated the capabilities of activated carbon and macroreticular resin for recovering residual organics from the effluent, correlated conventional parameters with carbon recoveries, developed high-pressure liquid chromatographic techniques for separation of organics in the recovered mixtures and identified a selected extract fraction. The Organics-Carbon Adsorbable Standard Method was adapted for use with a low turbidity effluent and a mass balance based on non-volatile total organic carbon was developed, demonstrating that the sorptive capacity of the system was not exceeded by a 60-1 sample. Ten individual carbon chloroform extracts …
Deep Penetration Of Electrons Into Homogeneous Media By The Method Of Condensed Collisions, Joseph Francis Janni
Deep Penetration Of Electrons Into Homogeneous Media By The Method Of Condensed Collisions, Joseph Francis Janni
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
The objective of this dissertation was to develop an accurate and efficient alternative to presently available methods of calculating the steady state penetration of electrons deep into homogeneous materials. A thorough solution must include scalar fluxes, net currents, angular distributions, and differential energy spectra. This research has successfully developed the method of condensed collisions, which provides an alternative to methods now in use for the solution of the electron transport problem. The condensed collsion method is general, but has been applied specifically to deep penetration electron transport to demonstrate its utility. The present aplication was for electrons having incident energies …
Mass Transfer At The Edge Of A Rotating Disk, Jeffrey Malcolm Cohen
Mass Transfer At The Edge Of A Rotating Disk, Jeffrey Malcolm Cohen
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
A different approach to the problem of mass transfer to a rotating disk, employing less restrictive assumptions, has been undertaken to quantify the phenomenon of mass transfer at the disk's edge. Experimental work in support of theoretical conjectures was performed as part of this work.
In order to include the effect of mass transfer at the edge on mass transfer to the entire disk, the equation of convective diffusion was solved in two dimensions over a region that extended beyond physical projection of active area of the disk. A synthesis of experimental results and theoretical considerations was used to specify …

Critical Exposure Pathways: An Analysis Of The Environmental Impact Of Gaseous Effluents From Light-Water-Cooled Reactors, Robert Danna
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The analysis of the environmental impact of routine radioactive gaseous releases from operating nuclear power stations is discussed using a radiation dose assessment. This analysis includes a discussion of the origin of radionuclide effluents, a discussion of federal policies, and a calculation of radiation doses to man. A model of estimating the radioactive dose from gaseous effluents from light-water-cooled reactors is described using guidelines described in the Code of Federal Regulations and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Regulatory Guides. The environmental impact of these sources is then analyzed using dose rates calculated along critical exposure pathways for various radioactive nuclides. Examples …
Environmental Aspects Of The Nuclear Fuel Cycle And High-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal, Robert S. Kent
Environmental Aspects Of The Nuclear Fuel Cycle And High-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal, Robert S. Kent
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
An assessment of the environmental effects of the nuclear fuel cycle industries is discussed, reactor waste inventory and standards are presented, and the alternatives for high-level radioactive waste disposal reviewed, with particular attention being given to disposal in deep geological formations on land. One of the major concerns regarding potential impacts of the nuclear fuel cycle industries is the lack of a definite and proven method of disposal of the high-level radioactive wastes from light water moderated reactors. The problem is expected to become more pressing as the nuclear power industry and the associated radioactive waste inventories grow in the …

Heavy Metals In The Water And Wastewater Systems Of The University Of Central Florida, William Keith Mccully
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
In large enough quantities, heavy metals may be detrimental to human health. Metals in raw water may pass through a water treatment plant without being completely removed. Once in a the distribution system, the water may experience metal pick-up due to corrosion. During the course of this study, an attempt was made to determine the heavy metal concentrations in the University of Central Florida's potable water systems. Samples were fun on the plasma spectrophotometer, Spectraspan III, and analyzed for heavy metal content. The results indicate pick-up of Fe, Al, Cu, and Zn in the distribution system. The arsenic and lead …

I intend to strike a balance between generality and depth, between technology and philosophy, and between perception and …
Cadmium In Forest Ecosystems Around Lead Smelters In Missouri, Nord L. Gale, Bobby G. Wixson
Cadmium In Forest Ecosystems Around Lead Smelters In Missouri, Nord L. Gale, Bobby G. Wixson
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
The development of Missouri's new lead belt within the past decade has provided an excellent opportunity to study the dissemination and effects of heavy metals in a deciduous forest ecosystem. Primary lead smelters, within the new lead belt have been identified as potential sources of cadmium as well as lead, zinc, and copper. Sintering and blast furnace operations tend to produce significant quantities of small particulates highly enriched in cadmium and other heavy metals. At one smelter, samples of stack particulate emissions indicate that as much as 0.21 lb of cadmium may be released to the atmosphere per hour. This …
Stochastic Analysis For Water Quality, Ronald F. Malone, David S. Bowles, William J. Grenney, Michael P. Windham
Stochastic Analysis For Water Quality, Ronald F. Malone, David S. Bowles, William J. Grenney, Michael P. Windham
Reports
This report demonstrates the feasibility of applying stochastic techniques to linear water quality models. The Monte Carlo, First Order, and Generation of Moment Equation techniques are applied to a long term phosphorus model of Lake Washington. The effect of uncertainty of the phosphours loading term on simulated phosphous levels is analyzed. All three stochastic techniques produced the same results. The simulated concentrations of phosphorus in the water column are very responsive to uncertainty in annual phosphorus loading, the sediment concentrations relatively insensitive. The Monte Carlo technique is shown to require the most computation time of the three stochastic techniques applied. …
Treatment And Disposal Of Hazardous Wastes In The East Central Florida Region, Tracey Bell
Treatment And Disposal Of Hazardous Wastes In The East Central Florida Region, Tracey Bell
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Although the East Central Florida area is not heavily industrialized, its dependence on groundwater resources makes it especially vulnerable to contamination by poor waste disposal practices. The East Central Florida area was studied to discover the nature and disposal of hazardous wastes generated. It was found that a large portion of hazardous wastes in the region were from very small industries, distributors, and even consumers. Three of the most toxic and/or voluminous waste problems in the area--metal plating wastes, pesticide wastes, and hospital wastes--were studied to determine available alternatives for disposal and their costs.

Determination Of Strategy For Harvesting Burley Tobacco, Yasuhiko Miyake, Larry G. Wells, George A. Duncan, Jimmie Rankin
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
The decision-making process associated with the scheduling of burley tobacco harvesting operations was formulated as a multi-stage decision process, and solved using a procedure called dynamic programming. The solution of a stochastic dynamic programming model provides a set of optimal decision rules, that is, a strategy. When certain user-specified parameters are provided, the decision model provides information concerning the optimal date to start harvesting, the optimal number of hours to harvest on each day, the optimal date to introduce hired labor, and the optimal number of workers which should be hired.
The solution of the dynamic programming model makes it …

An Economic Evaluation Of The Salinity Impacts From Energy Development: The Case Of The Upper Colorado River Basin, Rangesan Narayanan, Sumol Padungchai, A. Bruce Bishop
An Economic Evaluation Of The Salinity Impacts From Energy Development: The Case Of The Upper Colorado River Basin, Rangesan Narayanan, Sumol Padungchai, A. Bruce Bishop
Reports
To analyze the effect of potential energy development on water allocation and water quality in the Upper Colorado River Basin, a linear programming model is formulated. Using the model, changes in salinity are predicted. Further, least-cost strategies to maintain the established numeric salinity criteria through both structural and nonstructural alternatives are developed. The effectiveness of alternative control measures are examined within given institutional constraints. Based on cost-benefit analysis, optimal salinity levels over time are proposed. The economic feasibility of presently planned strucutral measures to reduce salinity is investigated and contrasted with nonstructural alternatives.

The purposes of this study were to evaluate virus removal in treatment of water supplies by an in-line direct filtration pilot plant system and to suggest a system design to enhance virus removal. Isotherm and jar tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of pH, sodium ion concentration, and coagulants (alum and cationic polyelectrolytes Cat-Floc T, Nalco 8102, and 8103) on the bacteriophage MS2 contained in water. Isotherm studies were also conducted to assess the kinetic adsorption of MS2 to sand, anthracite, and garnet. Rapid sand, dual-media, and multi-media filters were tested in continuous in-line direct filtration operations. Approximately 95 …
Modeling The Performance Of The Intermittent Sand Filter, P. A. Cowan, E. J. Middlebrooks
Modeling The Performance Of The Intermittent Sand Filter, P. A. Cowan, E. J. Middlebrooks
Reports
Several models were developed to predict the efficiency of the intermittent sand filter (ISF) in removing algae from wastewater stabilization pond effluent; volatile suspended solids (VSS) was the analytical technique used to identify algal concentrations. The first (ISF model) and second (modified ISF model) models consisted of two distinct portions: a surface algal layer (SAL) component and a sand phase component. In the ISF model, the sand phase component was described in terms of 20 empirical sand filter efficiency terms (20 ^ coefficients); in the modified ISF model, a functional relationship between ^ and filter depth was developed. The modified …

Erosion Control During Highway Construction: Volume 1, Calvin G. Clyde, C. Earl Israelsen, Paul E. Packer
Reports
Summary: Highway constuction as we know it today is a high-risk activity with respect to engendering soil erosion. In earlier days of road building, when rights-of-way were generally narrow and excavations mostly shollow, erosion was rarely a serious problem. Only occasionally was it considered necessary to design and apply specific measures for erosion control. With the advent of the superhighway involving far greater widths of right-of-way, and much deeper disturbance of the natural ground to affort the horizontal and vertical highway geometry necessary for high-speed travel, came a several fold increase in erosion potential and a direct need for specific …
