Cost Effective Design Of The Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment System, Robert P. Huguenard Jan 1986

Cost Effective Design Of The Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment System, Robert P. Huguenard

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In current design practice the components of the complete mix activated sludge system are designed as individual units with little or no appreciation for the process interactions which occur between system components. To achieve acceptable process efficiency and to realize cost effectiveness a unified design approach is necessary. This research effort was initiated to define the characteristics of the economic optimum complete mix activated sludge configuration while considering system interactions.

A computer program was developed for the completion of the process design and the economic analysis of the aeration basins, the settling basins, and the return sludge pumping facilities for …

Distribution Of Lead And Zinc In Groundwater Around An Exfiltration Pipe Including A Study Of Specific Conductance, Donna M. Schiffer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Highway runoff is a significant source of nonpoint pollution to surfoce and ground waters. Underground disposal of stormwater has several advantages, such as recharge of ground water resources and reduction of flow rates at existing storm sewer outfa11s. However, there are few studies on the effects of underground disposal of stormwater on the qua1ity of ground water. The purpose of this stucty was to examine the changes 1n lead, zinc, and specific conductance in highway runoff that is routed to an underground disposal facility as the water passes through the unsaturated soil to the surficia1 aquifer. An exfiltration pipe in …

A Shuttle Bus For The University Of Central Florida, Maryam Hosseini-Kargar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The University of Central Florida, with an enrollment of approximately 16,000 students, is being faced with parking, traffic and transportation problems. The University of Central Florida (UCF) is a commuter campus, with over 90% of the students arriving by automobile. Parking spaces cost over $800/space, and funding to build new spaces is scarce. Existing lots on the perimeter of the UCF campus offer a potential advantage to park and ride services or a shuttle serve around UCF.

Research conducted for this paper evaluated the usage of a shuttle bus system around the UCF campus. The primary purpose of the shuttle …

The Use Of Enlarged Feed Wells As Flocculator Units In Activated Sludge Secondary Clarifiers, Mahnaz Shahnami Jan 1986

The Use Of Enlarged Feed Wells As Flocculator Units In Activated Sludge Secondary Clarifiers, Mahnaz Shahnami

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The quality of the effluent from activated sludge wastewater treatment plants is highly dependent on the performance of the final clarifier. The final clarifier performs solids/liquids separation through sedimentation. The standard design criteria (overflow rate and detention time) must be selected such that the effluent suspended solids requirements are met.

Numerous research programs have been conducted to evaluate the factors affecting the sedimentation efficiency of activated sludge mixed liquor. Flocculation has been documented as a significant factor. The flocculation process is an agglomeration of small primary particles of the surface of larger particles to achieve higher settling velocities. Increased settling …

Selection Of Remedial Engineering Techniques For Dioxin-Contaminated Soil Sites ; Based On Site Geological Characteristics, Jeffrey John Lux Jan 1986

Selection Of Remedial Engineering Techniques For Dioxin-Contaminated Soil Sites ; Based On Site Geological Characteristics, Jeffrey John Lux

Masters Theses

"Specific geologic, hydrologic, and topographic characteristics influence the selection of technologies employed in the remediation of sites affected by dioxin-contaminated soil. These characteristics are significant in the selection of equipment and methods for excavation and materials processing.

The only currently sociologically acceptable method of treatment of dioxin-contaminated soils is incineration. As more is learned concerning the nature of dioxin sorption to soil particles and the mobility of dioxin in the environment, long-term storage in underground mines, and land burial appear to offer strong potential alternatives. Strong public sentiment against non-destructive remedial options would have to be overcome. There are also …

Runoff And Erosion As Affected By Corn Residue: Prt Ii: Rill And Interill Components, John E. Gilley, S. C. Finkner, R. G. Spomer, L. N. Mielke

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Hydraulic and soil loss variables were measured under simulated rainfall conditions at selected downslope distances on plots with corn residue rates ranging from 0.0 to 6.7 t/ha. Application of corn residue produced substantial reductions in runoff rate, runoff velocity, sediment concentration and soil loss rate along the entire slope length. On those plots subject to rilling, runoff rate, sediment concentration and soil loss rate usually increased with downslope distance.

Rill and interrill sediment concentration and soil loss rate were also measured at selected slope lengths. lnterrill sediment concentration changed little with downslope distance while greater interrill soil loss rates were …

Relationship Between Pulse-Wave Velocity And Arterial Elasticity, F J. Callaghan, L A. Geddes, Charles F. Babbs, J D. Bourland

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Pulse wave velocity (PWV) was measured in situ in 11 isolated canine common carotid arteries. Seven arteries exhibited a linear PWV vs. pressure function at pressures ranging from 0 to 200 mmHg. Four arteries yielded a linear relationship between PWV and pressure between 1 and 100 mmHg; for these vessels the relationship was nonlinear at higher pressures. Seven arteries (five from the group which was linear up to 200 mmHg and two from the group which was linear up to 100 mmHg) were excised and pressure/volume measurements were made in vivo. Using pressure/volume data, the Moens-Korteweg equation was evaluated as …

Sediment And Dye Concentration Effects On Fluorescence, S. C. Finkner, John E. Gilley Jan 1986

Sediment And Dye Concentration Effects On Fluorescence, S. C. Finkner, John E. Gilley

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Because of the relatively large sediment concentrations sometimes found on upland regions, adsorption of fluorescent dye onto sediment may be of concern. A laboratory study was conducted to identify the effects of sediment and dye concentration on adsorption. Sediment and dye concentration were both found to significantly affect adsorptive dye loss of rhodamine WT and sulpho rhodamine B.
Regression equations were developed which related dye adsorption to sediment and dye concentration. For a particular soil and dye material, regression equations may be used to correct for adsorptive dye loss. Sulpho rhodamine B is recommended as the dye of choice for …

Runoff And Erosion As Affected By Corn Residue: Part I. Total Losses, John E. Gilley, S. C. Finkner, R. G. Spomer, L. N. Mielke

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The effects of verying rates of corn residue on runoff and erosion from a loess soil in southwestern Iowa were measured using a rainfall simulator. Consistent reductions in runoff, sediment concentration and soil loss resulted from increased residue application. Small amounts of surface cover produced substantial reductions in erosion. A regression equation relating surface cover to residue weight was obtained. Equations describing relative runoff, sediment concentration and soil loss as a function of surface cover were also developed using regression analysis.

Estimating Residue Cover, Elbert C. Dickey, Paul J. Jasa, David P. Shelton Jan 1986

Estimating Residue Cover, Elbert C. Dickey, Paul J. Jasa, David P. Shelton

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Crop residue management through conservation tillage is one of the best and most efficient methods farmers have to control soil erosion. Each year about 140 million tons of topsoil are eroded from Nebraska farmlands. Recent research shows that farmers can greatly reduce this loss by maintaining a residue cover of at least 20 to 30 percent after all tillage and planting operations. Leaving this amount of residue can reduce water caused erosion by 50 percent of what it would be from a cleanly tilled field, while leaving more residue will reduce soil losses even further. Conservation tillage and residue management …

Simple Models For Diaphragm-Type Chlorine/Caustic Cells Ii. Effect Of Acidic Anolyte On Steady-State Caustic Yield, John Van Zee, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A simple steady-state model of a diaphragm-type chlorine/caustic cell in which the diaphragm is divided into two regions by a homogeneous acid-base reaction is presented. The location of the reaction affects significantly the caustic yield and effluent concentration. The model is used to predict the location of this reaction as a function of the operating variables, the physical constants, and three measurable properties of the diaphragm. These measurable properties are the MacMullin number or resistivity ratio of electrolyte-filled diaphragm relative to the electrolyte, the Darcy's law diaphragmpermeability, and the diaphragm thickness. The model is used to predict a maximum in …

The Modeling And Analysis Of Multi-Component, Multivalent Biospecific Adsorption, Bo Henrik Arve

Doctoral Dissertations

"A general model is presented and used to predict the dynamic behavior of the adsorption, wash, and elution stages of biospecific adsorption (affinity chromatography) in finite bath and column operations. The model accounts for film and pore diffusional mass transfer resistances and the rates of interaction between adsorbates and ligands. For column operations the effect of axial dispersion in the flowing fluid stream is included. The model is applicable to single and multi-component biospecific as well as non-specific adsorption, and the adsorbates may be monovalent or multivalent. In the elution stage both non-selective and selective elution of monovalent adsorbates is …

A Study Of Parameters Indicating Microbial Activity In Mixed Aerobic Cultures, William Smith Sep 1985

A Study Of Parameters Indicating Microbial Activity In Mixed Aerobic Cultures, William Smith

Theses

Mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), oxygen uptake rate (OUR) and general dehydrogenase activity, as expressed by the reduction of the electron-acceptor Dye 3-(4',5'-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 4-diphenyltetra-zolium bromide (MTT), were compared for their ability to measure microbial activity in mixed aerobic cultures. A fourth parameter, specific enzyme activity, was dropped from consideration because of the difficulty of developing a satisfactory experimental technique. Measurement of the parameters was applied to the biodegradation of phenol and o-chlorophenol by activated sludge from a municipal sewage treatment plant, and by two commercially available bacterial preparations.

MLSS, although the most commonly used of the three parameters tested, is …
