A Doctoral Degree In Aviation Science: The Need, Curriculum Content, And Other Considerations As Perceived By Aviation Educators Holding Doctoral Degrees, Barry Robert Beck
Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to determine if there is a need for a doctorate in aviation, what content areas should be included in the doctoral program, and what type of degree should an aviation doctoral program establish, as perceived by doctorally-prepared aviation educators. A two-round Delphi method was used to obtain a consensus from a group of doctorally-prepared experts on the content areas for doctoral programs in nonengineering aviation science. The panel of 100 experts were all doctorally-prepared and were members of the University Aviation Association, or if not members of the UAA, were working in collegiate …
Approximation Of Biodegradation Rate Constants For Monoaromatic Hydrocarbons (Btex) In Ground Water, Todd Weidemeier, Matthew Swanson, John Wilson, Donald Kampbell, Ross Miller, Jerry Hansen
Approximation Of Biodegradation Rate Constants For Monoaromatic Hydrocarbons (Btex) In Ground Water, Todd Weidemeier, Matthew Swanson, John Wilson, Donald Kampbell, Ross Miller, Jerry Hansen
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Two methods were used to approximate site-specific biodegradation rates of monoaromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes [BTEX]) dissolved in ground water. Both use data from monitoring wells and hydrologic properties of the aquifer to estimate a biodegradation rate constant that can be sued in ground water solute fate and transport models. The first method uses a biologically recalcitrant tracer in the ground water, associated with the hydrocarbon plume to normalize changes in concentration of BTEX under anaerobic conditions; attenuation of the tracer is attributed to dilution, sorption, and/or volatilization. Attenuation of BTEX in excess of the attenuation of the …
Application Of Reanalysis Techniques For Pattern Design Of Spot Welds, Young San Kim
Application Of Reanalysis Techniques For Pattern Design Of Spot Welds, Young San Kim
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Extensive benchmarking on competitive cars has shown that the durability of vehicles, assembly-induced variations, and assembly cost are directly related to the quality and number of spot welds. On most luxury cars, approximately 4,500 to 5,000 spot welds are found. On less expensive cars, the range is from 3,500 to 4,500. These cars usually inherit more noise, rattles, squeaks, and other quality-related problems. These problems have motivated the search for a new capability to systematically place welds in the most critical areas, with a minimum number of welds for car bodies, while satisfying all performance requirements (e.g., stiffness, stress distribution, …

Two Methods Of Neural Network Controlled Dynamic Channel Allocation For Mobile Radio Systems, Kelvin T. Erickson, Edward J. Wilmes
Two Methods Of Neural Network Controlled Dynamic Channel Allocation For Mobile Radio Systems, Kelvin T. Erickson, Edward J. Wilmes
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Two methods of dynamic channel allocation using neural networks are investigated. Both methods continuously optimize the mobile network based on changes in calling traffic. The first method uses backpropagation model predictions to aid the channel allocator. Each cell contains a backpropagation model which provides the channel allocator a call traffic prediction allowing the channel allocator to effectively optimize the network. The second method uses the same backpropagation models along with actor-critic models to perform the channel allocation. The actor-critics learn to model traffic activity between adjacent cells in real-time, and thereby learn to allocate channels dynamically between cells. The learning …
An Experimentally Obtainable Heat Source Due To Absorption Of Ultrasound In Biological Media, James L. Drewniak, F. Dunn
An Experimentally Obtainable Heat Source Due To Absorption Of Ultrasound In Biological Media, James L. Drewniak, F. Dunn
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Deposition of heat as a result of loss in an ultrasonic wave may result in damage to biological tissues. The extensive use of ultrasound for diagnostic purposes during pregnancy necessitates the evaluation of thermal risk to a developing fetus during routine clinical exposures. Because of the small ultrasonic absorption coefficient in soft tissues at low megahertz frequencies, temperature elevations exceeding 1 °C are not expected from clinically employed ultrasound systems, and there is no evidence that such small temperature increases can result in deleterious effects. However, when the propagation path includes bone, which is known to be highly lossy, theoretical …

Unsupervised Color Image Segmentation: With Application To Skin Tumor Borders, Randy Hays Moss, G. A. Hance, Scott E. Umbaugh, William V. Stoecker
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The images used in this research were digitized from 35mm color photographic slides obtained from a private dermatology practice and from New York University. The authors compared 6 color segmentation methods and their effectiveness as part of an overall border-finding algorithm. The PCT/median cut and adaptive thresholding algorithms provided the lowest average error and show the most promise for further individual algorithm development. Combining the different methods resulted in further improvement in the number of correctly identified tumor borders, and by incorporating additional heuristics in merging the segmented object information, one could potentially further increase the success rate. The algorithm …

The Effects Of Glucose And Fatty Acids On Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal Using A Sequencing Batch Reactor, Tarek Zaki Khouri
The Effects Of Glucose And Fatty Acids On Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal Using A Sequencing Batch Reactor, Tarek Zaki Khouri
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Two anaerobic/aerobic sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were used to evaluate enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). The first SBR, designated the Glucose SBR, was run for a period of four months. It received a synthetic wastewater plus glucose as a supplemental carbon source. The second SBR, the Isovaleric SBR, was run for three months. During the first month, isovaleric acid was its supplemental carbon source while for the remaining time period, no supplemental carbon source was added to the feed. Steady-state data from the SBR receiving isovalerate yielded the highest phosphorus (P) removals observed during the study, with a mixed liquor …
Global Optimization Studies On The 1-D Phase Problem, Martin Zwick, Byrne Elliot Lovell, Jim Marsh
Global Optimization Studies On The 1-D Phase Problem, Martin Zwick, Byrne Elliot Lovell, Jim Marsh
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Simulated Annealing (SA), two techniques for global optimization, were applied to a reduced (simplified) form of the phase problem (RPP) in computational crystallography. Results were compared with those of "enhanced pair flipping" (EPF), a more elaborate problem-specific algorithm incorporating local and global searches. Not surprisingly, EPF did better than the GA or SA approaches, but the existence of GA and SA techniques more advanced than those used in this study suggest that these techniques still hold promise for phase problem applications. The RPP is, furthermore, an excellent test problem for such global optimization methods.

Bioremediation Treatability Studies For Soils Containing Herbicides, Chemicals, And Petroleum Products, Loring F. Nies, Matthew B. Mesarch
JTRP Technical Reports
Leaking underground storage tanks are widespread throughout the United States. It is estimated that there are 1.4 million underground gasoline storage tanks in the United States, with as many as 75,000 to 100,000 that may be leaking. In Indiana alone, more than 3,500 of the 15,000 registered underground storage tank facilities have reported leaks. Conventional remediation methods often involve pump-and-treat schemes for contaminated water, and excavation and burial of contaminated soil in hazardous waste landfills. These methods increase the risk of exposure to pollutants for workers and local residents. Furthermore, these methods merely involve the transfer of pollutants from one …

Laboratory Study On The Use Of Tire Shreds And Rubber-Sand In Backfilled And Reinforced Soil Applications, Andres Bernal, C. W. Lovell, Rodrigo Salgado
JTRP Technical Reports
Millions of scrap tires are discarded annually in the United States, the bulk of which are currently landfilled or stockpiled. This consumes valuable landfill space, or, if improperly disposed, creates a fire hazard and provides a prolific breeding ground for rats and mosquitoes. The use of tire shreds as lightweight fill material can sharply reduce the tire disposal problem. The present study, based on laboratory testing and numerical modeling examines the feasibility of incorporating tire shreds and rubber-sand mixtures as lightweight geomaterial in embankments and backfills. The growing interest in utilizing waste materials in civil engineering applications has opened the …
Environmental Bioassay Evaluation Of Foundry Waste Residuals, Kenneth Chad Bastian, James E. Alleman
Environmental Bioassay Evaluation Of Foundry Waste Residuals, Kenneth Chad Bastian, James E. Alleman
JTRP Technical Reports
Although the constructive reuse of foundry residuals represents a decidedly beneficial goal with distinct economic and environmental benefits, potential end-users are nonetheless reluctant to use these residuals, given an inherent concern about potential unforeseen environmental liabilities. Results of foundry residual leachate characterization to date strongly suggest that many ferrous foundries are discarding sands whose quality is fully amenable to their future use with embankment construction and related high-volume highway development activities. In order to provide additional assurance as to the environmental impact of foundry residual reuse, the MicrotoxTM bioassay has been used to quantify the response of living organisms (e.g., …

A Direct, Approximate Solution To The Modified Green-Ampt Infiltration Equation, Puneet Srivastava, Thomas A. Costello, Dwayne R. Edwards
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Accurately predicting the rainfall-runoff process is of vital importance for water quality models as well as for correct design of various types of hydraulic structures. This article presents a method of describing the cumulative infiltration process as an explicit function of time using an approximation to the modified Green-Ampt equation given by Mein and Larson (1971). The resulting equation is helpful in predicting cumulative infiltration and therefore infiltration capacity for computer simulation models. The proposed method takes about 50% less time than the usual iterative technique for the same degree of accuracy. The maximum error due to approximation was 1% …
Simulation Of Runoff Transport Of Animal Manure Constituents, Yang Wang, Dwayne R. Edwards, Tommy C. Daniel, H. Don Scott
Simulation Of Runoff Transport Of Animal Manure Constituents, Yang Wang, Dwayne R. Edwards, Tommy C. Daniel, H. Don Scott
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Runoff losses of land-applied animal manure constituents can adversely affect the quality of downstream waters. Reliable mathematical simulation models can help estimate runoff losses of animal manure constituents and identify management measures to reduce these losses. The objective of this study was to develop and calibrate an event-based simulation model to describe the runoff transport of solids (soil and manure particles) and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) from areas treated with animal manure. The resulting model, consisting of linked hydrology, soil/manure transport, and nutrient transport components, is process-oriented and uses measurable parameters to the greatest degree possible. The three components of …

Quality Of Runoff From Four Northwest Arkansas Pasture Fields Treated With Organic And Inorganic Fertilizer, Dwayne R. Edwards, Tommy C. Daniel, John F. Murdoch, Philip A. Moore Jr.
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Long-term land application of animal manures, even at agronomic rates, can promote accumulation of soil phosphorus (P) which can, in turn, contribute to increased P loadings to downstream waters. The objective of this study was to assess the soil and runoff effects of replacing animal manure as a soil amendment with inorganic fertilizer (ammonium nitrate, NH4NO3) on fields that had been treated previously with animal manures. Runoff from two pairs of small fields (0.57 to 1.46 ha) was sampled from September 1991 to April 1994. All fields had been treated previously with animal manures; after runoff …

Poultry Litter-Treated Length Effects On Quality Of Runoff From Fescue Plots, Dwayne R. Edwards, Philip A. Moore Jr., Tommy C. Daniel, Puneet Srivastava
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Using experimental data and/or mathematical simulation models to identify practices that reduce pollution from manure-treated areas is sometimes perceived as limited by the unknown validity of extrapolating plot-scale data to larger areas and by uncertainties in modeling transport of various pollutants. The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of length of manure treatment on runoff concentrations of poultry litter constituents and to define the modes of transport (particulate versus soluble) for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), carbon (C), and solids. Poultry litter was applied to three 1.5- x 18.3-m fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) plots with runoff collection …

Application Of Simplified Phosphorus Transport Models To Pasture Fields In Northwest Arkansas, Dwayne R. Edwards, C. T. Haan, Andrew N. Sharpley, John F. Murdoch, Tommy C. Daniel, Philip A. Moore Jr.
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Runoff transport of phosphorus (P) is often predicted from simple equations with parameters determined from data applicable primarily to row-cropped and fallow cover conditions. The applicability, accuracy, and precision of such P transport prediction equations under pasture situations are less well defined. The objectives of this study were to determine parameters of simplified runoff P transport equations for pasture fields and to assess the accuracy and precision of the equations. Runoff, sediment yield, soluble P transport, and particulate P transport data were collected from four pasture fields in northwestern Arkansas. Runoff event enrichment ratios and extraction coefficients were computed, and …
Development Of A Biologically Based Aerobic Composting Simulation Model, Dennis P. Stombaugh, Sue E. Nokes
Development Of A Biologically Based Aerobic Composting Simulation Model, Dennis P. Stombaugh, Sue E. Nokes
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
A relatively simple dynamic model based on microbial process kinetics has been developed for aerobic composting. Differential equations describing microbial, substrate, and oxygen concentrations, as well as moisture and temperature profiles have been derived as a function of vessel size and aeration rate. Microbial biomass growth was described using Monod growth kinetics as a function of degradable substrate concentration, oxygen concentration, moisture content, and compost temperature. Facility and fan operating costs have been included to permit economic optimization of the process. Predicted results demonstrated the ability of the model to quantify and describe the influence of multiple interacting factors (temperature, …

Grazing And Haying Effects On Runoff And Erosion From A Former Conservation Reserve Program Site, John E. Gilley, B. D. Patton, P. E. Nyren, J. R. Simanton
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Grazing and haying effects on runoff and erosion from a former Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) site near Streeter, North Dakota, were determined. Treatments included undisturbed CRP, twice-over rotational grazing, season-long grazing, haying, and burning. Runoff and erosion were measured from simulated rainfall which was applied to 3.7 x 10.7 m (12.0 X 35.1 ft) plots. Following an initial stabilization period, no significant difference in runoff or erosion was found between the season-long grazing and burned treatments. Use of the CRP site for grazing or haying resulted in a significant increase in runoff compared to leaving the area in an undisturbed …

Frequency Domain Image Analysis For Detecting Stress Cracks In Corn Kernels, Y. J. Han, Y. Feng, Curtis L. Weller
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
A corn kernel classification procedure was developed in the frequency domain using a two-dimensional Fourier Transform for inspection of stress cracks. Investigations were also conducted to define suitable conditions and optimum image resolution for viewing stress cracks in corn kernels using a computer vision system. A pre-processing procedure included contrast enhancement, edge enhancement, and kernel edge elimination to improve stress crack recognition. A Fast Fourier Transform algorithm was applied to the pre-processed images, and the transformation results were condensed into 33 feature signatures representing position or orientation invariant morphological features. A multivariate discriminant analysis and multiple regression analysis were used …

Heat Curing Of Soy Protein Films, A. Gennadios, V. M. Ghorpade, Curtis L. Weller, M. A. Hanna
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Modification of soy protein film properties by heat-curing was studied. Glycerin-plasticized films were cast from alkaline aqueous solutions of soy protein isolate. Films were heated at 80 or 95°C for 2, 6, 14, or 24 h. Tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (E), moisture content (MC), water solubility (WS), water vapor permeability (WVP), and color of heated and control films were measured. Heated films had increased TS and +b (yellowness) Hunter color values and reduced E, MC, WS, and WVP values. These effects were enhanced as heating time and temperature increased.

Metering Characteristics Accompanying Rate Changes Necessary For Precision Farming, A. Bahri, K. Von Bargen, Michael F. Kocher, L. L. Bashford
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Agricultural machines used in precision fanning must adjust application rates according to the needs of each cell within a field. Changing from an initial application rate to a new rate while the machine travels from one cell to another in the field is accompanied with some misapplication. The severity of this misapplication depends on the down-the-row delivery characteristics of the metering system and the magnitude of the rate change from cell to cell.
On-the-go rate change tests evaluated the down-the-row performance of an operator controlled metering system when increasing and decreasing wheat seeding rates by 10 and 20 kg/ha steps. …

Spatial Patterns Analysis Of Field Measured Soil Nitrate, Farida Shaukat Goderya, Mohamed F. Dahab, Wayne E. Woldt, Istvan Bogardi
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to assess the spatial variability of residual soil nitrate, measured in three contiguous 16 ha fields. Available data for residual soil nitrate were examined using conventional statistics. Data tended to be skewed with the mean greater than the median. Geostatistical methods were used to characterize and model the spatial structure. Three dimensional spatial variability was examined using two semivariograms: horizontal-spatial and vertical. Two dimensional horizontal-spatial semivariograms were also computed for each 0.3m (1ft) layer. Semivariogram analysis showed that there were similarities in the patterns of spatial variability for all fields. The results suggest that …
Combinatorial Approaches For Hard Problems In Manpower Scheduling, Hoong Chuin Lau
Combinatorial Approaches For Hard Problems In Manpower Scheduling, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Manpower scheduling is concerned with the construction of a workers' schedule which meets demands while satisfying given constraints. We consider a manpower scheduling Problem, called the Change Shift Assignment Problem(CSAP). In previous work, we proved that CSAP is NP-hard and presented greedy methods to solve some restricted versions. In this paper, we present combinatorial algorithms to solve more general and realistic versions of CSAP which are unlikely solvable by greedy methods. First, we model CSAP as a fixed-charge network and show that a feasible schedule can be obtained by finding disjoint paths in the network, which can be derived from …

To investigate the fate of nitric oxide (NO) synthesized by activated macrophages, the concentrations of NO and its principal reaction products, nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-), were measured as a function of time in suspension cultures of RAW264.7 macrophages attached to microcarrier beads. Synthesis of NO became evident 2-5 h after stimulation of the cells, and steady concentrations of NO were achieved after about 9 h. The appearance of NO in the extracellular fluid coincided with the appearance of NO2- and NO3-, which were formed thereafter at approximately equal and constant rates. Using a kinetic model based on rate constants …
