Generic, Geometric Finite Element Analysis Of The Transtibial Residual Limb And Prosthetic Socket, Barbara Silver-Thorn, Dudley S. Childress Apr 1997

Generic, Geometric Finite Element Analysis Of The Transtibial Residual Limb And Prosthetic Socket, Barbara Silver-Thorn, Dudley S. Childress

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Finite element analysis was used to investigate the stress distribution between the residual limb and prosthetic socket of persons with transtibial amputation (TTA). The purpose of this study was to develop a tool to provide a quantitative estimate of prosthetic interface pressures to improve our understanding of residual limb/prosthetic socket biomechanics and prosthetic fit. FE models of the residual limb and prosthetic socket were created. In contrast to previous FE models of the prosthetic socket/residual limb system, these models were not based on the geometry of a particular individual, but instead were based on a generic, geometric approximation of the …

Input Design For Systems Under Identification Using Indirect And Direct Methods, Marco P. Schoen Mar 1997

Input Design For Systems Under Identification Using Indirect And Direct Methods, Marco P. Schoen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The motivation for system identification can be manifold. In this work, the provocation to identify unknown system characteristics is derived from the control engineering point of view. That is, one intends to design a control strategy based on the identified system properties. The used system identification methods are the Open-Loop Kalman filter System Identification method (OKID) and the Closed-Loop System Identification method (CLID). It is shown that the quantitative largest error of the system identification is given by its model representation, that is the attempt to describe a system with model parameters which poses a linear relationship with the input/output …

Modeling A Chemical Battlefield And The Resulting Effects In A Theater-Level Combat Model, Todd M. Gesling Mar 1997

Modeling A Chemical Battlefield And The Resulting Effects In A Theater-Level Combat Model, Todd M. Gesling

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the development of a methodology to model chemical weapons use in the Joint Staff's Joint Warfare Analysis Experimental Prototype (JWAEP) and to quantify the resulting effects. The methodology incorporates organic unit assets and theater-level chemical assets into JWAEP by using the three principles of nuclear, biological, and chemical defense (NBC) which reflect joint and Army doctrine, and combines them with the basic concepts already used in existing theater-level models. Other aspects of the problem include representing chemical 'packages' on the battlefield, determining attrition and time effects, adjusting unit effectiveness, determining chemical package intelligence acquisition procedures, identifying solution …

Us/Remax Manual Vs. 2.7, Richard C. Peralta, Alaa H. Aly

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

US/REMAX is designed to assist water managers in developing optimal groundwater and/or surface water strategies for a wide range of management problems. US/REMAX uses the response matrix method, which assumes that physical system response to stimuli is linear. However, US/REMAX can also address nonlinear systems via cycling. In one application, astrategy computed using US/REMAX required 40% less pumping than one obtained via a normal simulation model. US/REMAX also easily computes tradeoffs for multiobjective problems.

Estimation Of Pore Diameter For Intraparticle Fluid Flow In Hidisperse Porous Chromatographic Particles, G. A. Heeter, Athanasios I. Liapis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A quantitative method is developed and presented for estimating the mean pore diameter, d(pore), that could allow intraparticle fluid flow in the macroporous region of adsorbent particles with a bidisperse porous structure packed in a column. The method is used to estimate the value of d(pore) that is required to obtain specified values of the fraction, F, of the column superficial fluid velocity that is flowing through the macroporous region of the adsorbent particles and the value of d(pore) that is required to obtain specified values of the intraparticle Peclet number, Pe(intra).

Residual Strength Of Equine Bone Is Not Reduced By Intense Fatigue Loading: Implications For Stress Fracture, R. B. Martin, V. A. Gibson, S. M. Stover, J. C. Gibeling, L. V. Griffin

Biomedical Engineering

Fatigue or stress fractures are an important clinical problem in humans as well as racehorses. An important question in this context is, when a bone experiences. fa!igue damage ~uring e~treme use, how much is it weakened compared to its original state? Since there are very ltmtted data on thts quesuon and stress fractures are common in racehorses, we sought to determine the effect of fatigue loading on the monotonic l:trength of equine cortical bone. Beams were machined from the dorsal, medial and lateral cortices of the third metacarpal bones of six thoroughbred racehorses. Beams from left and right bones were …

A New Method For The Determination Of Flow Directions And Contributing Areas In Grid Digital Elevation Models, David G. Tarboton Feb 1997

A New Method For The Determination Of Flow Directions And Contributing Areas In Grid Digital Elevation Models, David G. Tarboton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A new procedure for the representation of flow directions and calculation of upslope areas using rectangular grid digital elevation models is presented. The procedure is based on representing flow direction as a single angle taken as the steepest downward slope on the eight triangular facets centered at each grid point. Upslope area is then calculated by proportioning flow between two downslope pixels according to how close this flow direction is to the direct angle to the downslope pixel. This procedure offers improvements over prior procedures that have restricted flow to eight possible directions (introducing grid bia) or proportioned flow according …

Historical Water Use Backcasting Study Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, Mohamed A. Hegazy, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The goal of this report is to present historic (backcast) water use for Luke Air Force Base (LAFB), Arizona for 1941 through 1961. Historic water use (including system losses) from LAFB records can be used as groundwater pumping amounts because groundwater extracted from the underlying aquifer was the sole water source. Historical water use amounts were derived primarily using regression analysis and the Installation Water Resources Analysis and Planning System - Air Force (IWRAPS-AF). IWRAPS-AF is a computer software package designed to forecast or backcast water use and assess the effectiveness of conservation measures at Air Force Installations (Willett et. …

Bilinear Time-Frequency Representations Of Heart Rate Variability And Respiration During Stress, Rindala Saliba Jan 1997

Bilinear Time-Frequency Representations Of Heart Rate Variability And Respiration During Stress, Rindala Saliba

Dissertations

Recently, joint time-frequency signal representation has received considerable attention as a powerful tool for analyzing a variety of signals and systems. In particular, if the frequency content is time varying as in signals of biological origin which often do not comply with the stationarity assumptions, then this approach is quite attractive. In this dissertation, we explore the possibility of better representation of two particular biological signals, namely heart rate variability (HRV) and respiration. We propose the use of time-frequency analysis as a new and innovative approach to examine the physical and mental exertion attributed to exercise. Two studies are used …

Two Dimensional Agonistic Control, Daqing Yang Jan 1997

Two Dimensional Agonistic Control, Daqing Yang

Dissertations

The conventional method of precise multiple-axis motion control entails use of a multiple axis positioning system with each axis carrying not only the workpiece but also the positioning system of the remaining axes. The resultant structure is heavy, sluggish, and expensive. An alternative positioning technique is being investigated in which the motion of the workpiece is controlled by pulling it with tendons, each of which has its own actuator. Since the actuators can be mounted on the base of the structure instead of being carried by motion system of the other axes, they can be relatively large and powerful without …

Evaluation Of Environmental Characteristics Of Wtp Residuals For Disposal In Monofills, Ping Tian Jan 1997

Evaluation Of Environmental Characteristics Of Wtp Residuals For Disposal In Monofills, Ping Tian

Dissertations

Disposal of water treatment plant (WTP) have raised great concerns due to the stringent water quality standards and environmental regulations, and limited availability of land for ultimate disposal. The ultimate disposal of water treatment plant residuals by using monofill may be one of the most economical, and feasible options. Design and operation of such a monofill will be simple because of the uniformity of the characteristics of WTP residuals.

The objectives of this project were to determine the environmental characteristics of WTP residuals and to apply these characteristics for the design of monofills and development of the metal leaching model …

Counterpulsation Cardiac Assist Device Controller Defection Filter Simulation And Canine Experiments, Carl Edward Werner Jan 1997

Counterpulsation Cardiac Assist Device Controller Defection Filter Simulation And Canine Experiments, Carl Edward Werner

Dissertations

Electronic control systems for counterpulsation Cardiac Assist Devices (CADs) are an essential part of cardiac assistance. Synchronization of the counterpulsation CAD controller with the cardiac cycle is critical to the efficacy of the CAD. The robustness of counterpulsation CAD controllers varies with the ability of the CAD controller to properly trigger on aortic pressure (Pa) and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals for sinusoid rhythms, non-sinusoid rhythms and non-ideal signals resulting from surgical intervention. An analog-to-digital converter and digital-to-analog converter based CAD controller development platform was devised on a 33Mhz PC-AT.

Counterpulsation Pa systolic rise and dicrotic notch detectors were demonstrated with a …

Three-Dimensional Stress Analysis Of The Femur With Prosthetic Hip Stem Utilizing Computed Tomography Scans Of The Femur For Geometry And Material Properties, Thomas J. Lavin Jan 1997

Three-Dimensional Stress Analysis Of The Femur With Prosthetic Hip Stem Utilizing Computed Tomography Scans Of The Femur For Geometry And Material Properties, Thomas J. Lavin

Theses

Three-dimensional finite element stress analyses of the femur with prosthesis hip stem were performed for two cases, one male and one female, using ideally bonded cemented titanium prostheses. Computed tomography data files were used to derive the three-dimensional femur geometry and material properties for each cortical bone element. The maximum shear stress (4.7 MPa) in the cement was greater then the maximum tensile stress and occurred at the cement-bone interface. The tensile stresses in the cement were less then the fatigue strength of the cement. The stress patterns were quite similar for the two cases.

A data analysis program was …

Optimization Of Ion-Exchange Chromotography With Multiple Gradient Inputs For Protein Separations, Tariq Mahmood Jan 1997

Optimization Of Ion-Exchange Chromotography With Multiple Gradient Inputs For Protein Separations, Tariq Mahmood

Theses

Gradient elution chromatography is an efficient technique for adjusting the retention of sample components during liquid chromatographic separations. However, the optimization of gradient elution is usually done by trial and error. Thus, for large scale processes this results in expensive and time consuming design and operations. Peak resolution that describes the degree of separation is a commonly used parameter for chromatographic processes. However, in processes where operating time and product dilution are of great importance, resolution alone is not adequate for describing the separation efficiency.

A new parameter "resolution optimization factor" is used for the optimization of gradient elution processes. …

Microporous Silicon Dioxide/Vycor Membranes For Gas Separation, Justin R. Barone Jan 1997

Microporous Silicon Dioxide/Vycor Membranes For Gas Separation, Justin R. Barone

Theses

This study focused on producing membranes for molecular sieving of gases by reducing the pore size of an already existing membrane structure. To do this, SiO2 was deposited inside the pores of a Vycor tube with initial pore diameter of 4 nm. The film deposition took place by a low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) process where diethylsilane (DES) and nitrous oxide (N2O) were used as precursor gases. A counterflow reactant geometry was used where the precursor gases were flowed on both sides of the porous membrane. This deposition geometry gave higher selectivities and better mechanical stability. …

A Methodology For The Design Of An Integrated Air Stripping/Biofiltration Process To Clean Contaminated Aquifers, Pothitos Ioannis Stamatiadis Jan 1997

A Methodology For The Design Of An Integrated Air Stripping/Biofiltration Process To Clean Contaminated Aquifers, Pothitos Ioannis Stamatiadis

Theses

This thesis deals with the conceptual design of an integrated air stripping/biofiltration process for cleaning aquifers contaminated with volatile organic pollutants. In this technology, the pollutant is transferred from the aquifer to an air stream which is subsequently treated in a biofilter. The work presented here is an effort to develop a design methodology for the integrated process and suggests a general, quantitative approach which can be used in preliminary technology evaluation. This methodology involves relatively simple equations for the stripping process and detailed (oftentimes complex) models for biofiltration under conditions of continuous variation of the properties of the polluted …

Laser Profilometry Of Polymeric Materials, Eduard A. Kulik, Patrick Calahan Jan 1997

Laser Profilometry Of Polymeric Materials, Eduard A. Kulik, Patrick Calahan

Cells and Materials

Unlike the mechanical stylus profilometer, the laser profilometer does not damage the surface of soft materials. However, the accuracy of autofocusing of the laser profilometer is not always sensitive enough to discriminate the material/air interface from subsurface structures of semitransparent polymers. In the present study over ten polymeric surfaces were gold coated in order to investigate the effect of gold coating on the readings of a laser profilometer. Surface profiles of some polymeric materials became much smoother even if a very thing gold coating was applied to increase the reflection from the surface. It was concluded that a thin gold …

Image Analysis Of Primary Bone-Derived Cells On Different Polystyrene Surfaces, R. M. Shelton, G. Landini

Cells and Materials

The aim of the present study was to examine whether two different cell populations could be discerned using image analysis of a variety of morphological parameters on bacteriological and tissue culture polystyrene surfaces. Rat periosteal and osteoblast cultures were established on both polystyrene petri dishes and examined using phase contrast microscopy after one and two weeks before capturing digital images which were stored on a personal computer. The digital images were processed to identify the cell margins or perimeter, from which seven different morphological parameters were calculated using a program developed (by GL) for both the cell populations on the …

Corrosion Of Metal Hip Arthroplasties And Its Possible Role In Loosening, H. K. Koerten, J. J. A. M. Van Raay, J. J. M. Onderwater, F. P. Bernoski, P. M. Rozing

Cells and Materials

Tissue removed with human hip arthroplasties during revision surgery of 45 patients was evaluated by transmission electron microscopy and X -ray microanalysis (XRMA). The results show that microscopic and submicroscopic particles are abundantly present in the tissue at the tissue/implant interface. XRMA of individual particles shows that the chemical composition of a portion of the particles was in agreement with that of the retrieved implants. Regularly, particulates with a dissimilar chemical composition were found. Sometimes, these particles could be recognized as filler particles of the cements used. Other particles could partly or completely be composed of the chemical elements that …
