Lead Binding To Metal Oxide And Organic Phases Of Natural Aquatic Biofilms, Yarrow M. Nelson, Leonard W. Lion, Michael L. Shuler, William C. Ghiorse Nov 1999

Lead Binding To Metal Oxide And Organic Phases Of Natural Aquatic Biofilms, Yarrow M. Nelson, Leonard W. Lion, Michael L. Shuler, William C. Ghiorse

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The role of the composition of surface-coating materials in controlling trace metal adsorption in aquatic environments was investigated using natural biofilms that developed on glass slides in three New York State lakes and a water-supply well. Adsorption isotherms were obtained for Pb binding to each of the biofilms in solutions with defined Pb speciation at 25°C and pH 6.0, with Pb concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 2.0 μM. Adsorption isotherms for Pb binding to laboratory-derived metal oxides and surrogate organic materials were determined under the same conditions. These isotherms, combined with characterization of natural biofilm composition, were used to estimate …

An Assessment Of The Efficacy Of Deep Drains Constructed In The Wheatbelt Of Western Australia Part 1 A Discussion On Drainage Implmentation In The Wheatbelt : A Case Study Review, Summary, Conclusions And Recommendations, N A. Coles, Richard J. George Dr, A D. Bathgate Nov 1999

Bathgate

Bulletins 4000 -

Australia has undertaken a strategic review of current and historical deep drainage projects. A 'rapid appraisal' methodology was utilised, based principally on existing hydrological investigations and interpretation and anecdotal evidence provided by landholders to clarify the role of drainage in managing water in dry land rural landscapes.

The objectives of this discussion paper are to:

1. Review the current status of groundwater drainage practice

2. Provide an assessment of deep drains in the landscape and

3. Propose recommendations on the development of drainage policy to enable the application of best management practice in groundwater drainage.

Light Backscatter Of Milk Products For Transition Sensing Using Optical Fibers, Frederick A. Payne, Czarena L. Crofcheck, Sue E. Nokes, Klat C. Kang Nov 1999

Light Backscatter Of Milk Products For Transition Sensing Using Optical Fibers, Frederick A. Payne, Czarena L. Crofcheck, Sue E. Nokes, Klat C. Kang

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Transition sensors are needed, particularly in the dairy industry, for detecting transitions in pipe flow systems from product-to-water or product-to-product (such as from chocolate to vanilla ice cream mix). Transition information is used to automatically sequence valves to minimize product waste. Optical fibers were used to measure light backscatter between 400 and 950 nm as a function of milk concentration in water and milkfat concentration in milk. The normalized response (100% for product and 0% for water) as a function of product concentration in water was approximately logarithmic for skim milk between 400 and 900 nm and approximately linear for …

Helical Single-Lamellar Crystals Thermotropically Formed In A Synthetic Nonracemic Chiral Main-Chain Polyester, Christopher Y. Li, Donghang Yan, Stephen Z. D. Cheng, Feng Bai, Jason J. Ge, Bret H. Calhoun, Tianbai He, Liang-Chy Chien, Frank W. Harris, Bernard Lotz Nov 1999

Helical Single-Lamellar Crystals Thermotropically Formed In A Synthetic Nonracemic Chiral Main-Chain Polyester, Christopher Y. Li, Donghang Yan, Stephen Z. D. Cheng, Feng Bai, Jason J. Ge, Bret H. Calhoun, Tianbai He, Liang-Chy Chien, Frank W. Harris, Bernard Lotz

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

Phase structures and transformation mechanisms of nonracemic chiral biological and synthetic polymers are fundamentally important topics in understanding their macroscopic responses in different environments. It has been known for many years that helical structures and morphologies can exist in low-ordered chiral liquid crystalline (LC) phases. However, when the chiral liquid crystals form highly ordered smectic liquid crystal phases, the helical morphology is suppressed due to the crystallization process. A double-twisted morphology has been observed in many liquid crystalline biopolymers such as dinoflaggellate chromosomes (in Prorocentrum micans) in an in vivo arrangement. Helical crystals grown from solution have been reported in …

A Defect In Interleukin 12-Induced Activation And Interferon Gamma Secretion Of Peripheral Natural Killer T Cells In Nonobese Diabetic Mice Suggests New Pathogenic Mechanisms For Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus., Marika Falcone, Brian Yeung, Lee Tucker, Enrique Rodriguez, Nora Sarvetnick Oct 1999

A Defect In Interleukin 12-Induced Activation And Interferon Gamma Secretion Of Peripheral Natural Killer T Cells In Nonobese Diabetic Mice Suggests New Pathogenic Mechanisms For Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus., Marika Falcone, Brian Yeung, Lee Tucker, Enrique Rodriguez, Nora Sarvetnick

Journal Articles: Regenerative Medicine

The function of natural killer T (NKT) cells in the immune system has yet to be determined. There is some evidence that their defect is associated with autoimmunity, but it is still unclear how they play a role in regulating the pathogenesis of T cell-mediated autoimmune diseases. It was originally proposed that NKT cells could control autoimmunity by shifting the cytokine profile of autoimmune T cells toward a protective T helper 2 cell (Th2) type. However, it is now clear that the major function of NKT cells in the immune system is not related to their interleukin (IL)-4 secretion. In …

Both partners are located in Lafayette, Louisiana. The EE-IR Center is funded by a …

The Impact Of The Simulated Digital Data Radio Communication Induced Interference On Voice Radio Communication, Daniela T. Kratchounova Oct 1999

The Impact Of The Simulated Digital Data Radio Communication Induced Interference On Voice Radio Communication, Daniela T. Kratchounova

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The transition of air/ground communications, from its present analog structure to a new digital communications architecture, will span a 10-year time frame. Testing to date indicates that the potential for interference from the digital system to the analog system would be critical, especially for General Aviation (GA) aircraft. This type of interference can be described as short, random bursts of noise capable of completely obliterating parts of the voice communication. The subsequent degrading effects on voice radio communications could jeopardize flight safety. The masking of parts of important information would result in distracted attention, debilitated cognitive performance, high level of …

A Thin-Film Micromanufactured Oxygen Microelectrode, James Clay Mcguyer Jr. Oct 1999

A Thin-Film Micromanufactured Oxygen Microelectrode, James Clay Mcguyer Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

The methods for production of recessed oxygen microelectrodes developed by Whalen, et al. (1967) and improved upon by Linsenmeier, et al. (1987) are dated production methods by the standards of sensor production of the current time. The production process for this type of polarographic oxygen sensing electrode has remained unchanged for over 10 years, and is a time consuming, extremely low-yield process. The goal of this project has been to use the techniques of micromanufacturing available at the Institute for Micromanufacturing at Louisiana Tech University to construct a recessed oxygen microelectrode with a batch process that has higher yield than …

The Microchannel Flow Of A Micropolar Fluid, Guohua Liu Oct 1999

The Microchannel Flow Of A Micropolar Fluid, Guohua Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

Micro-channel flows have been computed to investigate the influence of Navier-Stokes formulation for the slip-flow boundary condition, and a micro-polar fluid model, respectively.

The results of the slip boundary condition show that the current methodology is valid for slip-flow regime (i.e., for values of Knudsen number less than approximately 0.1). Drag reduction phenomena apparent in some micro-channels can be explained by slip-flow theory. These results are in agreement with some computations and experiments.

An ad hoc micro-polar fluid model is developed to investigate the influence of micro effects, such as micro-gyration, in micro-scale flows. The foundation of the ad hoc …

Rhythmic Growth Of Target And Spiral Spherulites Of Crystalline Polymer Blends, Thein Kyu, Hw Chiu, Aj Guenthner, Y Okabe, H Saito, T Inoue Oct 1999

Rhythmic Growth Of Target And Spiral Spherulites Of Crystalline Polymer Blends, Thein Kyu, Hw Chiu, Aj Guenthner, Y Okabe, H Saito, T Inoue

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

Numerical calculations reveal that the target and spiral growth patterns in spherulites can be generated from the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations (model C) by coupling a conserved compositional order parameter and a nonconserved crystal ordering parameter. Of particular interest is that the periodic concentric rings (target) or the spirals at the spherulitic core remain stationary in both the crystal (orientational) ordering field and the concentration field. Another intriguing observation is that the growth of target and spiral spherulites occurs in a stepwise fashion in synchronism with the rhythmic energy dissipation during crystallization.

Application Of A Fiber-Reinforced Continuum Theory To Multiple Deformations Of The Annulus Fibrosus, Stephen M. Klisch, Jeffrey C. Lotz Oct 1999

Application Of A Fiber-Reinforced Continuum Theory To Multiple Deformations Of The Annulus Fibrosus, Stephen M. Klisch, Jeffrey C. Lotz

Mechanical Engineering

Accurate tissue stress predictions for the annulus fibrosus are essential for understanding the factors that cause or contribute to disc degeneration and mechanical failure. Current computational models used to predict in vivo disc stresses utilize material laws for annular tissue that are not rigorously validated against experimental data. Consequently, predictions of disc stress resulting from physical activities may be inaccurate and therefore unreliable as a basis for defining mechanical–biologic injury criteria. To address this need we present a model for the annulus as an isotropic ground substance reinforced with two families of collagen fibers, and an approach for determining the …

Quantification Of Pulmonary Arterial Wall Distensibility Using Parameters Extracted From Volumetric Micro-Ct Images, Roger H. Johnson, Kelly Lynn Karau, Robert C. Molthen, Christopher A. Dawson Sep 1999

Quantification Of Pulmonary Arterial Wall Distensibility Using Parameters Extracted From Volumetric Micro-Ct Images, Roger H. Johnson, Kelly Lynn Karau, Robert C. Molthen, Christopher A. Dawson

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Stiffening, or loss of distensibility, of arterial vessel walls is among the manifestations of a number of vascular diseases including pulmonary arterial hypertension. We are attempting to quantify the mechanical properties of vessel walls of the pulmonary arterial tree using parameters derived from high-resolution volumetric x-ray CT images of rat lungs. The pulmonary arterial trees of the excised lungs are filled with a contrast agent. The lungs are imaged with arterial pressures spanning the physiological range. Vessel segment diameters are measured from the inlet to the periphery, and distensibilities calculated from diameters as a function of pressure. The method shows …

Wide Tires, Narrow Tires, Leonard L. Bashford, Michael F. Kocher, Todd S. Tibbetts

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Tractive performance comparisons among five different size tires were made on two different surface conditions, a wheat stubble field and a tilled wheat stubble field. Radial 18.4R46, 20.8R42 and 710/70R38 radial tires; and bias 750/65-38 and 850/55-42 tires were used. Instrumentation to evaluate tractive performance was installed on a two-wheel drive and a mechanical front wheel drive agricultural tractor. Axle torques, drawbar pull, travel speed, and engine rpm were recorded for a series of drawbar pulls on the two soil surfaces. Tractive performance evaluations among the tires were made by comparing the relationships of dynamic traction ratio to slip, tractive …

Capillary Surfaces In An Exotic Container: Results From Space Experiments, Paul Concus, Robert Finn, Mark M. Weislogel Sep 1999

Capillary Surfaces In An Exotic Container: Results From Space Experiments, Paul Concus, Robert Finn, Mark M. Weislogel

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Experimental results from the Interface Configuration Experiment (ICE) performed aboard the Space Shuttle and the Mir Space Station are reported. The experiment concerns fluid interfaces in certain ‘exotic’ containers in a low-gravity environment. These containers are rotationally symmetric and have the property that for given contact angle and liquid volume, a continuum of distinct rotationally symmetric equilibrium configurations can appear, all of which have the same mechanical energy. These symmetric equilibrium configurations are unstable, in that deformations that are not rotationally symmetric can be shown mathematically to yield configurations with lower energy. It is found experimentally, in confirmation of mathematical …

Analysis Of Long-Term Heart Rate Variability Using Labview, Daniel Yang Aug 1999

Analysis Of Long-Term Heart Rate Variability Using Labview, Daniel Yang

Theses

Long-term heart rate variability measurement is important in understanding the activities of the autonomic nervous system. Many methods and implications of long-terrn HRV were available in the literature. The first two studies focused on two data analysis techniques that were used on a normal subject. The first study focused on the 1/f fluctuations. For this analysis, three 1 1h heart rate variability data sets were collected with the Polar Vantage NV. A LabVIEW program was used to calculate the power spectrum of the heart rate, and then the 1/f line was calculated by taking the log of the power spectrum …

Interventions Of Water Jet Technology On Skin Surgery, Kittipat Vichyavichien Aug 1999

Interventions Of Water Jet Technology On Skin Surgery, Kittipat Vichyavichien

Theses

The perfect and precise surgical cut, similar to today's laser one, is very important in many surgeries, especially in dissection and to recanaize arterial occlusive lessions. Causing no coagulation is one of the advantages of water jet because it generates no heat. It also provides omni-directional cutting capabilities at very high speeds, resulting edge quality that is usually superior to other existing conventional cutting processes. Debris is always carried away from incisions by jet stream and less damaged tissue, than mechanical incisions. In addition, water jet exerts minimal contact pressure on the tissue being cut due to the small diameter …

Modeling Of A Permeable Reactive Barrier, Guatam C. Ijoor Aug 1999

Modeling Of A Permeable Reactive Barrier, Guatam C. Ijoor

Theses

The focus of the presentstudy was centered on the modeling analysis to support the Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) design. The flow model formulated to simulate the Permeable Reactive Barrier System integrated the available geologic, hydro geologic and geo-chemical data from numerous recent installations to simulate a subsurface ground water scenario.

Different generic cases that a PRB system would fall into were identified based on its utility and aquifer conditions and then employed to produce different model adaptations. The different simulation codes and interfaces were evaluated, and the most expedient of them was used to simulate the Model.

The simulations were …

A New Method For Preparing Self-Assembled Lipid Bilayers On Pt Electrode, Peng Diao, Dian-Lu Jiang, Xiao-Li Cui, Deng-Ping Gu, Ru-Ting Tong

Journal of Electrochemistry

A new method for preparing Pt-supported bilayer lipid membrane (Pt-BLM) on Pt electrode cleaned by high power ultrasound was reported. The reported method was convenient, costing less platinum and could be used to form large-area Pt-BLM as compared with the traditional Pt-wire-cutting method. The electrical properties of Pt-BLM were studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Experimental results showed that the values of membrane capacitance and the voltammetric characteristics were consistent with those of Pt-BLM prepared by traditional method.

Direct Electrolysis Of Seawater On Conducting Film For Microbial Anticorrosion 1. Simulation And Measurement Technique, Wei-Ling Hu, Ling-Ling Wu, Jing Zhou, Jing-Xin Li, Jin Luo, Zhong-Hua Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

Based on the electrochemical micro probe and the weak signal detection technique, simulated test and measurement system were set up by the use of four-electrode cell(including a micro electrode), bipotentiostat, lock-in amplifier and three-dimensional micro manipulating device. Based on the system, the micrometer scale concentration distribution of trace hypochlorite, which is produced by direct electrolysis of seawater on the conducting film for preventing microbial corrosion has been obtained for the first time. Both relationships between concentration of hypochlorite and its reduction current, which is termed an working curve, and between the reduction current of hypochlorite and measured time are reported.

Nutrient Balance On Nebraska Livestock Confinement Systems, Richard K. Koelsch, Gary Lesoing Aug 1999

Nutrient Balance On Nebraska Livestock Confinement Systems, Richard K. Koelsch, Gary Lesoing

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Managing the environmental risk associated with livestock production is a significant challenge. Nitrogen and phosphorus are commonly implicated as the sources of ground and surface water quality problems associated with livestock production. The degree of imbalance between these nutrient inputs and the managed nutrient outputs for a livestock operation defines the magnitude of potential environmental risk and provides insight as to the underlying causes of these challenges. A nitrogen and phosphorus balance was constructed for 33 Nebraska confinement livestock operations. Twenty-five and 17 of these operations experienced significant nitrogen and phosphorus imbalances, respectively (50% more nutrient inputs than outputs). Nutrient …

Neural Network Approach To Speech Pathology, Antonio P. Salvatore, Nicole A. Thorne, Charlotte M. Gross

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

A speech problem can be caused by different reasons, from psychological to organic. The existing diagnostic of speech pathologies relies on skilled doctors who can often diagnose by simply listening to the patient. We show that neural networks can simulate this ability and thus provide an automated (preliminary) diagnosis.

Epoxy-Terminated Self-Assembled Monolayers As Molecular Glues For Polymer Layers, Duangrut Julthongpiput Aug 1999

Epoxy-Terminated Self-Assembled Monolayers As Molecular Glues For Polymer Layers, Duangrut Julthongpiput

Masters Theses

Dense, homogeneous, and complete self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with epoxy surface groups were fabricated from epoxysilanes to serve as a template for chemical anchoring of polymer layers. A combination of scanning probe microscopy, ellipsometry, XPS, X-ray reflectivity, and contact angle measurements was used to study their morphology and surface properties. Self-assembly of epoxysilane molecules resulted in the formation of homogeneous SAMs 0.85 nm thick with the rms surface roughness 0.2 nm. Epoxysilane SAMs were truly monomolecular films with a virtually normal molecular orientation of densely packed molecules, which were firmly attached to the substrate.

Carboxylic acid and anhydride terminated polystyrenes of …

Comparison Of A Genetic Algorithm And Mathematical Programming To The Design Of Groundwater Cleanup Systems, Alaa H. Aly, Richard C. Peralta Aug 1999

Comparison Of A Genetic Algorithm And Mathematical Programming To The Design Of Groundwater Cleanup Systems, Alaa H. Aly, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

We present and apply a new simulation/optimization approach for single- and multiple-planning period problems in groundwater remediation. Instead of the traditional control locations for contaminant concentrations, we use an LQC norm as a global measure of aquifer contamination (CMAX). We use response-surface constraints to represent CMAX within the optimization model. We compare the performance of formal mixed integer nonlinear programming and a genetic algorithm for several optimization scenarios.

Optimal Design Of Aquifer Clean Up Systems Under Uncertainty Using A Neural Network And A Genetic Algorithm, Alaa H. Aly, Richard C. Peralta Aug 1999

Optimal Design Of Aquifer Clean Up Systems Under Uncertainty Using A Neural Network And A Genetic Algorithm, Alaa H. Aly, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a methodology to account for the stochastic nature of hydraulic conductivity during the design of pump-and-treat systems for aquifer cleanup. The methodology (1) uses a genetic algorithm to find the global optimal solution and (2) incorporates a neural network to model the response surface within the genetic algorithm. We apply the methodology for a real example and different optimization scenarios. The employed optimization formulation requires few hydraulic conductivity realizations. The presented approach produces a trade-off curve between reliability and treatment facility size .

Bioactivities Of A Tumour Necrosis Like Factor Released By Chicken Rnacrophages, Silke Rautenschlein, Anuradha Subramanian, Jagdev M. Sharma Jul 1999

Bioactivities Of A Tumour Necrosis Like Factor Released By Chicken Rnacrophages, Silke Rautenschlein, Anuradha Subramanian, Jagdev M. Sharma

Papers in Biotechnology

To test for tumour necrosis-like factor (TNF) of chickens, supernatants of a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated chicken macrophage cell line MQ-NCSU were analysed. A sequence of ion-exchange and gel-permeation chromatography was utilised to isolate TNF-like activity from the culture supernatant. The peak of TNF-like cytotoxic activity corresponded to the fractions with a nlolecular weight of 81 kDa or higher. Polyclonal anti-human TNF-a antiserum cross-reacted by Western blotting with a 17 kDa protein in the TNF-containing fraction ~ ~ n d e denaturing conditions. This result indicated that chicken TNF-like factor in the biologically active form may be a protein multimer of monomers …
