Development Of A High-Throughput Screening Platform To Profile Gene Delivery And Transcriptional Control In Macrophages, Alexis Ivy
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Macrophages are an important cell type in the body responsible for orchestrating the inflammatory response and return to homeostasis. Macrophages are often implicated in a multitude of disease pathologies including delayed wound healing, excessive fibrosis, autoimmune disease, and immunosuppression within the tumor microenvironment. Although macrophages have been targeted for therapeutic applications, success in utilizing them has remained elusive due to their relative ease of phenotype switching between inflammatory and anti-inflammatory. The challenge that remains is developing clinically relevant delivery vehicles that can target macrophages without causing a phenotypic switch counter-productive to the desired response. This is especially important when targeting …

Hands-On For Whom?, Isabella Stuopis, Avneet Hira
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Hands-on technology-enhanced pedagogies have been hailed as a panacea for engaging K–12 students in engineering. We unpack how the entanglement of the sociopolitical with the educational, namely how factors pertaining to resources and individual characteristics, impact engagement with such pedagogies. In particular, we expand upon how school funding, teacher preparation and support, access to out-of- school resources, and family background impact the in-and out-of- school resources students have access to. Further, we explain how characteristics such as a sense of belonging, pedagogical approaches, and assumptions and gatekeeping by adults impact students’ ability to engage with hands-on engineering education. In doing …

The findings from this research as outlined, reveal no significant differences in depolymerization time between the two glycols, achieving proper depolymerization and high recovery yields of over 95% after solvent purification. Comprehensive FT-IR and NMR analyses confirmed the successful degradation of bio-PUF and …
The Role Of Sensing Modalities In Shaping Collective Motion And Group Behavior, Poorendra P. Ramlall
The Role Of Sensing Modalities In Shaping Collective Motion And Group Behavior, Poorendra P. Ramlall
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Collective behavior refers to the coordinated movements that emerge from simple interactions between individuals within a group. Traditionally, researchers have modeled these interactions assuming individuals can sense their surroundings in all directions, like having eyes all around their heads. While this is a useful simplification, it does not capture the diverse ways animals actually sense the world. In this thesis, we take inspiration from the natural world, particularly from animals like bats and dolphins that use a combination of hearing and sight to navigate their environments. We explore how combining these sensory cues in a three-dimensional space affects the way …

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)
Energy is a fundamental factor for civilization development and sustainability. However, energy sources are dominated by non-renewable fractions, such as fossil fuels. Renewable biomass is projected to be a future fuel source. Spirulina platensis (SP) has numerous advantages compared to other biomass, and it is considered 3rd generation biomass that does not interfere with food and land usage and has a relatively low main decomposition temperature at 325.7℃. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was conducted to observe SP kinetics parameters, especially activation energy. Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), Ozawa-Flynn-Wall (OFW), and Starink iso-conversional methods reveal that SP has an activation energy of 152.33, 154.56, and …

There is a paradigm shift towards data-centric AI, where model efficacy relies on quality, unified data. The common research analytics and data lifecycle environment (CRADLE™) is an infrastructure and framework that supports a data-centric paradigm and materials data science at scale through heterogeneous data management, elastic scaling, and accessible interfaces. We demonstrate CRADLE’s capabilities through five materials science studies: phase identification in X-ray diffraction, defect segmentation in X-ray computed tomography, polymer crystallization analysis in atomic force microscopy, feature extraction from additive manufacturing, and geospatial data fusion. CRADLE catalyzes scalable, reproducible insights to transform how data is captured, stored, and analyzed.

Dissertations and Theses
The Agile and Adaptive Robotics Lab is interested in researching the neuromuscular control network of legged animal locomotion. To validate the lab's understanding of biological neural control, synthetic neural networks are developed and applied to biologically inspired legged robots. For a synthetic neural network to operate in the same manner as a biological neural network and produce the same locomotor behavior, the robot that the synthetic neural network is controlling must also mimic its biological counterpart. Previous research produced a quadruped robot hind leg designed with biomimetic passive dynamics by installing spring and damper pairs at each joint, however, an …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Antimony (Sb) and its composites have been recognized as potentially good anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their relatively high theoretical capacity of 660 mAh g−1 and to their low cost. However, Sb-based anodes suffer from a high-volume change during the lithiation/delithiation process that results in capacity fading and anode degradation after prolonged charge/discharge cycles. To address this issue, Sb2O3/TiO2 nanocomposite electrodes can be synthesized and used as anodes for LIBs with high capacity and good electrochemical stability. In the present work, TiO2@Sb2O3 composites with different (TiO2:Sb2O3) ratios of 0:1, 1:1, 1:4 and 3:1 were synthesized and directly …

Multi-Label Voice Disorder Classification Using Raw Waveforms, Gökay Di̇şken
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Automated voice disorder systems that distinguish pathological voices from healthy ones have been developed with the aid of machine learning methods. Both clinicians and patients can benefit from these systems as they provide many advantages, compared to the invasive techniques. These systems can produce binary (healthy/pathological) or multi-class (healthy/selected pathologies) decisions. However, multiple disorders might exist in an individual’s voice. Multi-label classification should be considered in such cases. By this time, only a single report is available on this topic, where hand-crafted features were used, and a data augmentation technique was utilized to overcome class imbalances. In this study, a …

Lignocellulosic biomass is produced photosynthetically from atmospheric CO2 and is one of the few sources of renewable, reduced carbon that is generated on a scale comparable to demand for chemical commodities. For a sense of scale, the U.S. Energy Security and Independence Act targets the production of approximately 16 billion gallons per year of second-generation lignocellulosic biofuels by 2025. That production would generate approximately 62 million tons per year of dry lignin byproducts. The focus of this dissertation is on the valorization of these lignin components of biomass. Currently, lignin is either discarded or burned for local heat or electricity …

Effect Of Local Chain Stiffness On Oligomer Crystallization From A Melt, Pierre Kawak, Christopher Akiki, Douglas R. Tree
Faculty Publications
While the process by which a polymer crystal nucleates from the melt has been extensively studied via molecular simulation, differences in polymer models and simulated crystallization conditions have led to seemingly contradictory results. We make steps to resolve this controversy by computing low-temperature phase diagrams of oligomer melts using Wang-Landau Monte Carlo simulations. Two qualitatively different crystallization mechanisms are possible depending on the local bending stiffness potential. Polymers with a discrete bending potential crystallize via a single-step mechanism, whereas polymers with a continuous bending potential can crystallize via a two-step mechanism that includes an intermediate nematic phase. Other model differences …
