Rocket Plume Particulate Characterization By Multiple Wavelength Opacity And Mie Scattering, Andrew P. Chouinard Jan 2004

Rocket Plume Particulate Characterization By Multiple Wavelength Opacity And Mie Scattering, Andrew P. Chouinard

Theses and Dissertations

In the presented work, experiments were conducted to assess the utility of plume opacity monitoring for hybrid rocket diagnostics. The first phase of the work involved measuring plume opacity at a single wavelength and then at two wavelengths simultaneously. Results showed excellent correlation between plume opacity and rocket motor firing cycle and correlation between plume opacity and oxidizer flow rate, thereby validating the utility of the technique. Additionally, a spectral dependence of plume opacity was demonstrated that indicated the possible presence of transparent particulates in the plume. Further phase 1 experiments investigated the performance requirements of a laser-based instrument to …

Manipulation Of Microenvironment With A Built-In Electrochemical Actuator In Proximity Of A Dissolved Oxygen Microsensor, Chang-Soo Kim, J. O. Fiering, C. W. Scarantino, H. Troy Nagle, Chae-Hyang Lee, Stefan Ufer Jan 2004

Manipulation Of Microenvironment With A Built-In Electrochemical Actuator In Proximity Of A Dissolved Oxygen Microsensor, Chang-Soo Kim, J. O. Fiering, C. W. Scarantino, H. Troy Nagle, Chae-Hyang Lee, Stefan Ufer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Biochemical sensors for continuous monitoring require dependable periodic self diagnosis with acceptable simplicity to check its functionality during operation. An in-situ self-diagnostic technique for a dissolved oxygen microsensor is proposed in an effort to devise an intelligent microsensor system with an integrated electrochemical actuation electrode. With a built-in platinum microelectrode that surrounds the microsensor, two kinds of microenvironments, called the oxygen-saturated or oxygen-depleted phases, can be created by water electrolysis, depending on the polarity. The functionality of the microsensor can be checked during these microenvironment phases. The polarographic oxygen microsensor is fabricated on a flexible polyimide substrate (Kapton) and the …

Detection Of Basal Cell Carcinoma Using Electrical Impedance And Neural Networks, Rohit Dua, Daryl G. Beetner, William V. Stoecker, Donald C. Wunsch Jan 2004

Detection Of Basal Cell Carcinoma Using Electrical Impedance And Neural Networks, Rohit Dua, Daryl G. Beetner, William V. Stoecker, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Variations in electrical impedance over frequency might be used to distinguish basal cell carcinoma (BCC) from benign skin lesions, although the patterns that separate the two are nonobvious. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) may be good pattern classifiers for this application. A preliminary study to show the potential of neural networks to distinguish benign from malignant skin lesions using electrical impedance is presented. Electrical impedance was measured in vivo from 1 kHz to 1 MHz at five virtual depths on 18 BCC and 16 benign or premalignant lesions. A feed-forward neural network was trained using back propagation to classify these lesions. …

Evolutionary Algorithms, Markov Decision Processes, Adaptive Critic Designs, And Clustering: Commonalities, Hybridization And Performance, Donald C. Wunsch, Samuel A. Mulder Jan 2004

Evolutionary Algorithms, Markov Decision Processes, Adaptive Critic Designs, And Clustering: Commonalities, Hybridization And Performance, Donald C. Wunsch, Samuel A. Mulder

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We briefly review and compare the mathematical formulation of Markov decision processes (MDP) and evolutionary algorithms (EA). In so doing, we observe that the adaptive critic design (ACD) approach to MDP can be viewed as a special form of EA. This leads us to pose pertinent questions about possible expansions of the methodology of ACD. This expansive view of EA is not limited to ACD. We discuss how it is possible to consider the powerful chained Lin Kernighan (chained LK) algorithm for the traveling salesman problem (TSP) as a degenerate case of EA. Finally, we review some recent TSP results, …

An Intelligent Dissolved Oxygen Microsensor System With Electrochemically Actuated Fluidics, Chang-Soo Kim, Jongwon Park, Xinbo He Jan 2004

An Intelligent Dissolved Oxygen Microsensor System With Electrochemically Actuated Fluidics, Chang-Soo Kim, Jongwon Park, Xinbo He

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new dissolved oxygen monitoring microsystem is proposed to achieve in situ intelligent self-calibration by using an electrochemically actuated fluidic system. The electrochemical actuation, based on water electrolysis, plays two critical roles in the proposed microsystem. First, the electrochemically generated gases serve as the calibrants for the in situ 2-point calibration/diagnosis procedure of the microsensor in a chip. Secondly, the electrochemical generation and collapse of gas bubbles provide the driving force of the bidirectional fluidic manipulation for sampling and dispensing of the sample solution. A microsystem including a dissolved oxygen microprobe, electrochemical actuators, and a fluidic structure are prepared by …

Modeling Impacts On Populations: Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas) Exposure To The Endocrine Disruptor 17Β-Trenbolone As A Case Study, David H. Miller, Gerald T. Ankley Jan 2004

Modeling Impacts On Populations: Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas) Exposure To The Endocrine Disruptor 17Β-Trenbolone As A Case Study, David H. Miller, Gerald T. Ankley

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Evaluation of population-level impacts is critical to credible ecological risk assessments. In this study, a predictive model was developed to translate changes in fecundity of the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) in a short-term laboratory toxicity test to alterations in population growth rate. The model uniquely combines a Leslie population projection matrix and the logistic equation. Application of the model requires only a life table for the organism of interest, a measure of carrying capacity for the given population, and an estimation of the effect of a stressor on vital rates. The model was applied to investigate population dynamics …

Copper Sorption Mechanisms On Smectites, Daniel G. Strawn, Noel E. Palmer, Luca J. Furnare, Carmen Goodell, James E. Amonette, Ravi K. Kukkadapu

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Due to the importance of clay minerals in metal sorption, many studies have attempted to derive mechanistic models that describe adsorption processes. These models often include several different types of adsorption sites, including permanent charge sites and silanol and aluminol functional groups on the edges of clay minerals. To provide a basis for development of adsorption models it is critical that molecular-level studies be done to characterize sorption processes. In this study we conducted X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic experiments on copper (II) sorbed on smectite clays using suspension pH and ionic strength as …

Geomicrobiology Of High-Level Nuclear Waste-Contaminated Vadose Sediments At The Hanford Site, Washington State, James K. Fredrickson, John M. Zachara, David L. Balkwill, David Kennedy, Shu-Mei W. Li, Heather M. Kostandarithes, Michael J. Daly, Margaret F. Romine, Fred J. Brockman

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Sediments from a high-level nuclear waste plume were collected as part of investigations to evaluate the potential fate and migration of contaminants in the subsurface. The plume originated from a leak that occurred in 1962 from a waste tank consisting of high concentrations of alkali, nitrate, aluminate, Cr(VI), 137Cs, and 99Tc. Investigations were initiated to determine the distribution of viable microorganisms in the vadose sediment samples, probe the phylogeny of cultivated and uncultivated members, and evaluate the ability of the cultivated organisms to survive acute doses of ionizing radiation. The populations of viable aerobic heterotrophic bacteria were generally …

Matrix Isolation Infrared Spectroscopic And Theoretical Study Of The Interaction Of Water With Dimethyl Methylphosphonate, Bruce S. Ault, Alex Balboa, David Tevault, Margaret Hurley Jan 2004

Matrix Isolation Infrared Spectroscopic And Theoretical Study Of The Interaction Of Water With Dimethyl Methylphosphonate, Bruce S. Ault, Alex Balboa, David Tevault, Margaret Hurley

United States Army: Publications

Matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy has been combined with theoretical calculations for the characterization of the 1:1 hydrogen-bonded complex between H2O and dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP). The symmetric O-H stretching mode was observed to shift 203 cm-1 to lower energy upon hydrogen bond formation, while a 32 cm-1 blue shift was noted for the H-O-H bending mode of the H2O subunit in the complex. These values compare extremely well with the (unscaled) shifts of -203 and +32 cm-1, respectively, that were calculated theoretically at the MP2/6-31+G** level. Additional perturbed modes of the DMMP subunit …

Continuum Modeling Of Cell Membranes, Eveline Baesu, R. E. Rudd, J. Belak, M. Mcelfresh Jan 2004

Continuum Modeling Of Cell Membranes, Eveline Baesu, R. E. Rudd, J. Belak, M. Mcelfresh

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we develop a finite-deformation model for cell membranes with a view toward characterizing the local mechanical response of membranes in atomic force microscope (AFM) experiments. The membrane is modeled as a 2-D fluid continuum endowed with bending resistance. The general theory is used to obtain equations that describe axisymmetric equilibrium states. The membrane is assumed to enclose a fluid medium, which transmits hydrostatic pressure to the membrane, and a point load is applied at the pole to simulate an AFM probe. Both types of loading are associated with a potential and the problem is then cast in …

In Situ Characterization Of Aluminum-Containing Mineral-Microorganism Aqueous Suspensions Using Scanning Transmission X-Ray Microscopy, Tae Hyun Yoon, Stephen B. Johnson, Karim Benzerara, Colin S. Doyle, Tolek Tyliszczak, David K. Shuh, Gordon E. Brown, Jr. Jan 2004

In Situ Characterization Of Aluminum-Containing Mineral-Microorganism Aqueous Suspensions Using Scanning Transmission X-Ray Microscopy, Tae Hyun Yoon, Stephen B. Johnson, Karim Benzerara, Colin S. Doyle, Tolek Tyliszczak, David K. Shuh, Gordon E. Brown, Jr.

United States Department of Energy: Publications

In situ characterization of colloidal particles under hydrous conditions is one of the key requirements for understanding their state of aggregation and impact on the transport of pollutants in aqueous environments. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) is one of the few techniques that can satisfy this need by providing element- and chemical-state-specific 2-D maps at a spatial resolution better than 50nmusing soft X-rays from synchrotron radiation wiggler or undulator sources tuned to the absorption edges of different elements. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra can also be collected simultaneously at a similar spatial resolution and can provide phase identification in …

Leaching And Sorption Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus By Crop Residue, J. D. Cermak, John E. Gilley, Bahman Eghball, B. J. Weinhold Jan 2004

Leaching And Sorption Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus By Crop Residue, J. D. Cermak, John E. Gilley, Bahman Eghball, B. J. Weinhold

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Overland flow from cropland areas often contains nutrients and residue materials can either contribute to runoff nutrient load through leaching or remove nutrients by sorption. Measurements were made of leaching and sorption of nitrogen and phosphorus from corn (Zea mays L.), soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Pastiche) residues placed in solutions containing inorganic nutrients. Variables used were type of residue material, nutrient constituent, solution concentration, and residue / solution contact time. For a given residue material and nutrient constituent, four different solution concentrations were used (PO4 -P: 0 to …

Long Stemmed Total Knee Arthroplasty With Interlocking Screws: A Computational Bone Adaptation Study, Jeffry S. Nyman, Scott J. Hazelwood, Juan J. Rodrigo, R. Bruce Martin, Oscar C. Yeh

Biomedical Engineering

The ability of an interlocking screw fixation technique to minimize bone loss related to stress shielding in the tibia was investigated and compared to the abilities of cement and press-fit fixation. Full bony ingrowth has been associated with greater stress shielding than partial ingrowth; therefore, the effect of intimate bonding of the stem to bone on subsequent bone loss was also studied. A damage-and disuse-based remodeling theory was coupled with a two-dimensional finite element model of the tibia to predict changes in bone remodeling following long stemmed total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for four different fixation techniques (cement, press-fit, interlock with …

Studies In Cardiac Defribrillation, Eamonn Mckenna Jan 2004

Studies In Cardiac Defribrillation, Eamonn Mckenna

Masters

Cardiac disease resulting in cardiac arrest is one of the most common fatal diseases in the developed world. Defibrillation is the medical procedure used to correct the irregular cardiac rhythm (ventricular fibrillation (VF)) which is very often detected in patients suffering cardiac arrest. In the work reported in this thesis, two aspects of the defibrillation of patients in VF were examined. The first area of investigation concentrated on the use of multiple defibrillation electrodes to be used during closed chest (transthoracic) defibrillation. This study was carried out in a saline bath and centred on “focusing” electric fields from perimeter electrodes …
