Dpm Dispersion Study Using Cfd For Underground Metal / Nonmetal Mines, Yi Zheng, Jerry C. Tien Jun 2008

Dpm Dispersion Study Using Cfd For Underground Metal / Nonmetal Mines, Yi Zheng, Jerry C. Tien

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) is considered carcinogenic after prolonged exposure. With increasing use of diesel-powered mining equipment in underground mines, miner's exposure to DPM has been increasing. Most studies on the issue has been DPM control measures with few studies on diesel exhaust propagation patterns after leaving the tailpipes. This study uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate the airflow pattern in an underground metal/nonmetal mine for a single heading. Several high DPM concentration areas are identified in the study and common practices for compliance are suggested. Airflow and DPM distribution are compared between blowing and exhausting face ventilation systems. …

Protein Interactions With Mixed Poly(Ethylene Glycol)/Polyacrylic Acid Brushes, Zhenqing Li Jun 2008

Protein Interactions With Mixed Poly(Ethylene Glycol)/Polyacrylic Acid Brushes, Zhenqing Li

All Theses

Tethered polymer chains that are grafted to a solid substrate by one chain end (polymer brushes) may be distinguished from other anchored polymer layers by the relatively high grafting densities gained. Potential uses of polymer brushes for interfacial modification to regulate interactions between proteins and substrates, such as drug delivery and protein separation, are widely recognized. Therefore, it is important to investigate interactions between proteins and surfaces modified with a polymer brush.
In this study, the 'grafting-to' method has been used to graft mixed poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) brushes onto poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA)-modified silicon wafers/glass slides to …

Fluorescence Tomography Characterization For Sub-Surface Imaging With Protoporphyrin Ix, Dax Kepshire, Scott C. Davis, Hamid Dehghani, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue

Dartmouth Scholarship

Optical imaging of fluorescent objects embedded in a tissue simulating medium was characterized using non-contact based approaches to fluorescence remittance imaging (FRI) and sub-surface fluorescence diffuse optical tomography (FDOT). Using Protoporphyrin IX as a fluorescent agent, experiments were performed on tissue phantoms comprised of typical in-vivo tumor to normal tissue contrast ratios, ranging from 3.5:1 up to 10:1. It was found that tomographic imaging was able to recover interior inclusions with high contrast relative to the background; however, simple planar fluorescence imaging provided a superior contrast to noise ratio. Overall, FRI performed optimally when the object was located on or …

Developing A Decision Model For Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (Jieddo) Proposal Selection, Lyle M. Dawley, Lenore A. Marentee, Alice Marie Long Jun 2008

Developing A Decision Model For Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (Jieddo) Proposal Selection, Lyle M. Dawley, Lenore A. Marentee, Alice Marie Long

Theses and Dissertations

This research uses decision analysis to develop a structured, repeatable and most importantly defensible decision model for the evaluation of proposed IED defeat solutions submitted to the Joint IED Defeat Organization (JIEDDO). Additive value models using Value-Focused Thinking (VFT) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) are examined as possible methodologies. VFT is determined to be the "best fit" for JIEDDO's decision situation in which proposals are submitted continuously and must be scored independently of previous proposals. VFT is first used to determine desirable qualities in IED defeat options, and then to generate a hierarchal value model to evaluate these qualities …

A Cartilage Growth Mixture Model With Collagen Remodeling: Validation Protocols, Stephen M. Klisch, Anna Asanbaeva, Sevan R. Oungoulian, Koichi Masuda, Eugene J.-Ma. Thonar, Andrew Davol, Robert L. Sah

Mechanical Engineering

A cartilage growth mixture (CGM) model is proposed to address limitations of a model used in a previous study. New stress constitutive equations for the solid matrix are derived and collagen (COL) remodeling is incorporated into the CGM model by allowing the intrinsic COL material constants to evolve during growth. An analytical validation protocol based on experimental data from a recent in vitro growth study is developed. Available data included measurements of tissue volume, biochemical composition, and tensile modulus for bovine calf articular cartilage (AC) explants harvested at three depths and incubated for 13 days in 20% fetal borine serum …

Techniques For Developing Large Scale Fuzzy Logic Systems, Jon C. Ervin, Sema E. Alptekin

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

In this paper, we describe various techniques used to make Intuitionistic Fuzzy Logic Systems amenable to operating on applications with large numbers of inputs. A rule reduction technique known as Combs method is combined with an automated tuning process based on Particle Swarm Optimization. A second stage of tuning on rule weights results in improved performance and further reduction in the size of the rule-base. The entire process has been developed to operate within the Matlab software environment. The technique is tested against the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Database. The use of these tools shows great promise in significantly expanding the …

Optimal Controller Synthesis Of Variable-Time Impulsive Problems Using Single Network Adaptive Critics, Xiaohua Wang, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a systematic approach to solve for the optimal control of a variable-time impulsive system. First, optimality condition for a variable-time impulsive system is derived using the calculus of variations method. Next, a single network adaptive critic technique is proposed to numerically solve for the optimal control and the detailed algorithm is presented. Finally, two examples-one linear and one nonlinear-are solved applying the conditions derived and the algorithm proposed. Numerical results demonstrate the power of the neural network based adaptive critic method in solving this class of problems.

Artificial Immune System Based Dstatcom Control For An Electric Ship Power System, Pinaki Mitra, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Jun 2008

Artificial Immune System Based Dstatcom Control For An Electric Ship Power System, Pinaki Mitra, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is a shunt compensation device which is generally used to solve power quality problems in distribution systems. In an all-electric ship power system, these power quality problems mainly arise due to the pulsed loads, which causes the degradation of the entire system performance. This paper presents the application of DSTATCOM to improve the power quality in a ship power system during and after pulsed loads. The control strategy of the DSTATCOM plays an important role in maintaining the voltage at the point of common coupling. A novel adaptive control strategy for the DSTATCOM based on artificial …

Computational Intelligence Meets The Netflix Prize, Ryan J. Meuth, Paul Robinette, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The NetFlix Prize is a research contest that will award $1 Million to the first group to improve NetFlix's movie recommendation system by 10%. Contestants are given a dataset containing the movie rating histories of customers for movies. From this data, a processing scheme must be developed that can predict how a customer will rate a given movie on a scale of 1 to 5. An architecture is presented that utilizes the Fuzzy-Adaptive Resonance Theory clustering method to create an interesting set of data attributes that are input to a neural network for mapping to a classification.

A Quantum Calculus Formulation Of Dynamic Programming And Ordered Derivatives, John E. Seiffertt Iv, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Much recent research activity has focused on the theory and application of quantum calculus. This branch of mathematics continues to find new and useful applications and there is much promise left for investigation into this field. We present a formulation of dynamic programming grounded in the quantum calculus. Our results include the standard dynamic programming induction algorithm which can be interpreted as the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation in the quantum calculus. Furthermore, we show that approximate dynamic programming in quantum calculus is tenable by laying the groundwork for the backpropagation algorithm common in neural network training. In particular, we prove that the …

Towards Spike-Based Speech Processing: A Biologically Plausible Approach To Simple Acoustic Classification, Ismail Uysal, Harsha Sathyendra, John G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Shortcomings of automatic speech recognition (ASR) applications are becoming more evident as they are more widely used in real life. The inherent non-stationarity associated with the timing of speech signals as well as the dynamical changes in the environment make the ensuing analysis and recognition extremely difficult. Researchers often turn to biology seeking clues to make better engineered systems, and ASR is no exception with the usage of feature sets such as Mel frequency cepstral coefficients, which employ filter banks similar to cochlear filter banks in frequency distribution and bandwidth. In this paper, we delve deeper into the mechanics of …

Optimal Neuro-Controller Synthesis For Variable-Time Impulse Driven Systems, Xiaohua Wang, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper develops a systematic scheme to solve for the optimal controls of variable time impulsive systems. First, the optimality conditions for variable time impulse driven systems are derived using the calculus of variation. After wards, a neural network based adaptive critic method is proposed to numerically solve the two-point boundary value problems formulated based on the optimality conditions derived. Finally, two examples - one linear and one nonlinear - are presented to illustrate the conditions derived and to show the power of the neural network based adaptive critic method proposed.

Two-Dimensional Computer-Generated Ornamentation Using A User-Driven Global Planning Strategy, Dustin Robert Anderson Jun 2008

Two-Dimensional Computer-Generated Ornamentation Using A User-Driven Global Planning Strategy, Dustin Robert Anderson

Master's Theses

Hand drawn ornamentation, such as floral or geometric patterns, is a tedious and time consuming task that requires much skill and training in ornamental design principles and aesthetics. Ornamental drawings both historically and presently play critical roles in all things from art to architecture; however, little work has been done in exploring their algorithmic and interactive generation. The field of computer graphics offers many algorithmic possibilities for assisting an artist in creating two-dimensional ornamental art. When computers handle the repetition and overall structure of ornament, considerable savings in time and money can result. Today, the few existing computer algorithms used …

Neural Network Models For Solving The Maximum Flow Problem, S. Effati, M. Ranjbar Jun 2008

Neural Network Models For Solving The Maximum Flow Problem, S. Effati, M. Ranjbar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, two new neural network models for solving the maximum flow problem are presented. The maximum flow problem in networks is formulated as a special type of linear programming problem and it is solved by appropriately defined neural networks. The nonlinear neural networks are able to generate optimal solution for maximum flow problem. We solve neural network models by one of the numerical method. Finally, some numerical examples are provided for the sake of illustration.
