Robust Adaptive Rate Control Algorithm And Its Simulation For P2p-Tv Streaming Media Systems, Fengjie Yin, Yang Hui, Zhang Ying

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: A control algorithm proposed to control the upstream rate based on sliding mode control in P2P-TV streaming media node. Through the rational design of sliding mode controller, the algorithm can adaptively control the numbers of signaling threads between neighbor pairs connected simultaneously and then control the upload rate. Further, it can achieve the fair use of resources. Due to the sliding mode control has strong robust with modeling uncertainties, time varying parameter fluctuations and external disturbances, it can avoid the system congestion under network condition change. Simulation results demonstrate that it can lead to the convergence of the …

Writing Children’S Stories To Improve Engineering Student’S Communication With Non-Engineering Audiences, Benjamin D. Mcpheron, Katelyn J. Butler Mar 2019

Writing Children’S Stories To Improve Engineering Student’S Communication With Non-Engineering Audiences, Benjamin D. Mcpheron, Katelyn J. Butler

ASEE IL-IN Section Conference

One of the biggest challenges for students in science and engineering is communicating technical information to a non-technical audience. Students may struggle because they are not adept writers, because they cannot divorce the ideas from the jargon, or because they simply don't understand the material well enough to explain it to someone else. To attempt to address this issue, this study proposes the use of children’s stories to help students practice writing for a target, non-technical audience. To measure the efficacy of this method, junior level engineering students in an electronics course in Fall 2018 were asked to write children’s …

Project Insight: A Granular Approach To Enterprise Cybersecurity, Sunna Quazi, Adam Baca, Sam Darsche

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we disambiguate risky activity corporate users are propagating with their software in real time by creating an enterprise security visualization solution for system administrators. The current problem in this domain is the lag in cyber intelligence that inhibits preventative security measure execution. This is partially due to the overemphasis of network activity, which is a nonfinite dataset and is difficult to comprehensively ingest with analytics. We address these concerns by elaborating on the beta of a software called "Insight" created by Felix Security. The overall solution leverages endpoint data along with preexisting whitelist/blacklist designations to unambiguously communicate …

Variable Scale Point Cloud Registration Algorithm, Shuifa Sun, Zhun Li, Kun Xia, Yunfei Shi, Jiquan Yang, Fangmin Dong

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To address the low registration accuracy issue caused by scale mismatch of two point clouds, a multi-scale point cloud registration algorithm is proposed based on the distance ratio invariance of the geometric center of gravity and centroid. The point cloud is firstly filtered. Then, the scale ratio calculation model of the point cloud data is established by computing the point cloud’s gravity center and centroid. Finally, according to the relationship between the registration error and the scale true value, the scale factor is refined step by step with ICP algorithm. For the noise and the inconsistent point in the …

Retail Facility Layout Considering Shopper Path And Door Placement, Sagarkumar D. Hirpara Jan 2019

Retail Facility Layout Considering Shopper Path And Door Placement, Sagarkumar D. Hirpara

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The physical design of a retail store is known to influence the attitude and behavior of shoppers, in turn affecting the store’s performance. While literature in retail design has alluded to the impact of changes in department placements on impulse revenue, it has not accounted for the changes in the path of a shopper due to such modifications. Shopper path changes can alter a department’s visibility to the shoppers as they pass by, and such visibility eventually impacts that department’s impulse revenue. To address this gap, we study the retail facility layout problem by accounting for changes in the shopper …

Spatial-Aware Global Contrast Representation For Saliency Detection, Dan Xu, Shucheng Huang, Xin Zuo

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Deep learning networks have been demonstrated to be helpful when used in salient object detection and achieved superior performance than the methods that are based on low-level hand-crafted features. In this paper, we propose a novel spatial-aware contrast cube-based convolution neural network (CNN) which can further improve the detection performance. From this cube data structure, the contrast of the superpixel is extracted. Meanwhile, the spatial information is preserved during the transformation. The proposed method has two advantages compared to the existing deep learning-based saliency methods. First, instead of feeding the deep learning networks with raw image patches or pixels, we …

Problems at the nexus of Food, Energy and Water Systems (FEWS) are among the most complex challenges we face. Spanning simple to complex temporal, geographic, social, and political framings, the questions raised at this nexus require multidisciplinary if not transdisciplinary approaches. Answers to these questions must draw from engineering, the physical and biological sciences, and the social sciences. Practical solutions depend upon a wide community of stakeholders, including industry, policymakers, and the general public. Yet there are many obstacles to working in a transdisciplinary environment: unfamiliar concepts, specialized terminology, and countless “blind” spots. Graduate education occurs in disciplinary ‘silos’, often …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Polyaniline Agglomerates And Polyaniline Nanoparticles To Use As Printed Sensors To Detect Spoilage Of Catfish During Refrigerated Storage, Vashti Martae Campbell

LSU Master's Theses

There is growing interest in the development of sensors contained in packaging for seafood that are applicable at the consumer level to monitor freshness in a non-destructive manner. Total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) analysis indicates the freshness of seafood. TVB-N analysis is sensitive to the spoilage compounds comprised of ammonia, trimethylamine, dimethylamine, and biogenic amines commonly found in seafood and whose concentration increases when spoilage microbial growth occurs. However, TVB-N analysis is laborious and is not suitable for use at the consumer level. Polyaniline (PANI) is a polymer that may be used as a sensor for detecting TVB-N in seafood. …

An Uncertainty-Aware Visual System For Image Pre-Processing, Christina Gillmann, Pablo Arbelaez, Jose Tiberio Hernandez, Hans Hagen, Thomas Wischgoll

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Due to image reconstruction process of all image capturing methods, image data is inherently affected by uncertainty. This is caused by the underlying image reconstruction model, that is not capable to map all physical properties in its entirety. In order to be aware of these effects, image uncertainty needs to be quantified and propagated along the entire image processing pipeline. In classical image processing methodologies, pre-processing algorithms do not consider this information. Therefore, this paper presents an uncertainty-aware image pre-processing paradigm, that is aware of the input image’s uncertainty and propagates it trough the entire pipeline. To accomplish this, we …
