Skid Prevention Studies In Kentucky, James H. Havens Sep 1958

Skid Prevention Studies In Kentucky, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Laboratory apparatus, consisting essentially of a torque generator and a torque meter, in which a rubber annulus is driven against a plane surface of a rock core or pavement specimen, as in an ordinary friction clutch, was used to study variations in the coefficients of friction with respect to texture and material characteristics. Dry friction coefficients were found to be rather high in magnitude. and fairly constant throughout wide variations in surface textures. In contrast, wet friction coefficients were very high for rough textures but very low for polished surfaces. Wet friction values correlated in an approximately hyperbolic manner with …

Engineer Intelligence Guide 15, Collection Of Information On Coasts And Beaches, 1958, Robert Bolin , Depositor Aug 1958

Engineer Intelligence Guide 15, Collection Of Information On Coasts And Beaches, 1958, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

In 1958, geographic intelligence in the US Armed Forces was decentralized. US Army Corps of Engineers was primarily responsible for creation of military intelligence concerning the surface of the earth excluding the oceans and seas for the armed forces of the United States. The Beach Erosion Board, originally an agency performing civil functions, had been preparing coast and beach intelligence since early in World War II. Engineer intelligence guides were issued to provide guidance concerning collection, processing, production, and dissemination of geographic intelligence to elements of the Corps of Engineers.

This Engineer Intelligence Guide contains a definition of Coast and …

Fm 3-130, U.S. Army Chemical, Biological And Radiological (Cbr) Intelligence, 1958, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

An appropriate alternative title for this manual would be “Chemical Corps Intelligence.” When this manual was issued the Chemical Corps was a bureau in the Headquarters, Department of the Army, headed by a general officer called the Chief Chemical Officer (CCO), as well as a branch of the army to which officers and enlisted men were appointed. Among the duties of the CCO were the development and supply of chemical, biological, and radiological (CBR) weapons and equipment, the training of chemical units for service in the field, management of the careers of officers in the Chemical Corps branch, and the …

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

This handbook includes pictures and brief descriptions of small arms, artillery, armored vehicles, aircraft, mines, and demolitions devices in use in Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordon, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. In addition, it includes aircraft markings and illustrations of uniforms and rank insignia. The descriptions of mines also include instructions for disarming them. Much attention was given to small arms, artillery, and armored vehicles, and little to aircraft.

This handbook covers a wide range of weapons and equipment used in the wars in the first half of the 20th century. Most of the equipment covered was manufactured in …

Pressure Drop In Packed Beds Of Metal Raschig Rings, Donald William Davis Jun 1958

Pressure Drop In Packed Beds Of Metal Raschig Rings, Donald William Davis

Theses

Absorption towers packed with split metal Raschig rings have a higher void content than towers packed with ceramic Raschig rings of the same nominal size. This increased void volume is due to the thinner wall of the metal ring. This higher void space should also result in lower pressure drops than would be encountered with ceramic rings. The purpose of this research program was to determine the pressure drop-flow characteristics of this packing, and to develop suitable correlations for design of packed absorption towers.

Split metal Raschig rings of one-half and one inch nominal sizes were tested to determine their …

Purification Of Technical Grade Latic Acid, Edward Francis Wezowicz Jun 1958

Purification Of Technical Grade Latic Acid, Edward Francis Wezowicz

Theses

A method to manufacture purified lactic acid from technical grade lactic acid 04%) was investigated. In this method, technical grade lactic acid was reacted with normal butyl alcohol, the water formed during the esterification was azeotropically removed, The ester formed, was separated from the excess butanol by vacuum distillation. Finally, the ester separated by distillation :as hydrolyzed to a purified grade of lactic acid.

In this study, several features are reported, which to the best of knowledge, appear in a publication for the first time. They are:

1. Conditions for the esterification of technical grade lactic acid with butanol, resulting …

A Study Of The Reset Cycle Of A Half-Wave Self-Saturable Magnetic Amplifier, William W. Lee Jun 1958

A Study Of The Reset Cycle Of A Half-Wave Self-Saturable Magnetic Amplifier, William W. Lee

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

It was the purpose of this study (1) to investigate the reset cycle of a half-wave self-saturable magnetic amplifier by graphical analysis of the irregular voltage functions appearing across the gate winding during reset; and (2) to determine if possible from this analysis a more satisfactory design method than those now available. Conditions of constant current reset were employed and the core material used had a nearly rectangular hysteresis loop. Resistive loads only are considered.

An Evaluation And Summary Of The 16-Year Performance Of A Concrete Test Pavement, Milton Evans Jr. Jun 1958

An Evaluation And Summary Of The 16-Year Performance Of A Concrete Test Pavement, Milton Evans Jr.

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Presented herein are a summary and evaluation of the performance of a reinforced concrete section of U.S. 27 in north central Kentucky which has been in existence since the summer of 1941. The pavement, totaling 7.89 miles, was constructed in 10 experimental test sections, as shown on the layout map in Figure 1. Five blends of cement, containing normal portland, natural, and two additives, were used with two types of coarse aggregate, limestone and gravel. Since the construction of the pavement in the summer of 1941, several reports and memoranda have been released dealing with various aspects of the over-all …

Ferromagnetism In Some Alloys Of The Copper-Manganese-Tin System, Leonard W. Boyd Jr. May 1958

Ferromagnetism In Some Alloys Of The Copper-Manganese-Tin System, Leonard W. Boyd Jr.

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The specific purpose of this investigation is to study the effects of heat treating at various temperatures for different lengths of time, with special attention paid to changes in magnetization. Identical heat-treating conditions were used on several different alloys, the compositions of which are such that some specimens are in the single-phase beta prime and beta regions, whereas others are in two-phase regions. For this investigation, only magnetic measurements will be attempted.
