In this research, we advance the domain of public safety by developing a machine learning model that utilizes the YOLO v8 architecture for real-time detection of firearms in video streams. A diverse and extensive dataset, capturing a range of firearms in varying lighting and backgrounds, was meticulously assembled and preprocessed to enhance the model's adaptability to real-world scenarios. Leveraging the YOLO v8 framework, known for its real-time object detection accuracy, the model was fine-tuned to accurately identify firearms across different shapes and orientations.

Embankments have been widely used in the construction of transportation and flood defense infrastructure. Embankments constructed from clays experience a suite of weather-driven deterioration processes that lead to a progressive loss of hydromechanical performance, causing potentially severe and costly consequences. This study aimed to predict the time to failure of aging, deteriorating clay embankments supporting transportation infrastructure. A multi-phase numerical modeling approach was developed to replicate the long-term, weather-driven, hydromechanical behavior of clay embankments. Improving road traffic safety relies on the ability to accurately predict traffic crashes and understand the factors contributing to severe injuries. This study employs a dual approach, utilizing both statistical analysis and machine-learning methodologies. Initially, statistical analyses such as chi-squared tests and Cramer's V values are applied to a decade's worth of police report data from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to identify primary causal factors behind crashes. Expanding on the insights from our initial investigation into railway accident patterns, this paper delves deeper into the predictive capabilities of machine learning to forecast potential accident trends in railway crossings. Focusing on critical factors such as “Highway User Position” and “Equipment Involved,” we integrate Kernel Ridge Regression (KRR) models tailored to distinct clusters, as well as a global model for the entire dataset. These models, trained on historical data, discern patterns and correlations that might elude traditional statistical methods. This study employs graph mining and spectral clustering to analyze patterns in railway crossing accidents, utilizing a comprehensive dataset from the US Department of Transportation. By constructing a graph of implicit relationships between railway companies based on shared accident localities, we apply spectral clustering to identify distinct clusters of companies with similar accident patterns. This offers nuanced insight into the underlying structure of these incidents. In this paper, we introduce a novel automated and high-precision acoustic emission (AE) monitoring algorithm and the software SIMORGH, which is suitable for structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil structures. Initially developed for laboratory-scale hydraulic fracture monitoring, this core software has been effectively scaled up to meter-level applications and is compatible with heterogeneous media such as concrete. In this study, the AlCuNiMn and AlCuNiMnSi high entropy alloys (HEAs) are investigated to characterize the effect of Si addition and subsequent annealing treatments on the corrosion behavior in a 3.5wt% NaCl solution at room temperature. The microstructure evolution from the as-received condition and after annealing at 600°C, 800°C, and 1000°C for 24 hours in air is examined. This project was conducted to renovate and revitalize the Legion Hall community center in the Village of Potter located in western Nebraska north of the Interstate. The work completed for this project can be separated into five disciplines: Hydrologic & Hydraulic Design, Geotechnical Analysis, Structural Analysis, Environmental Analysis, and Transportation Design. Legion Hall is a historical building within The Village of Potter which was built in 1917. The Village of Potter has recently acquired the rights to the hall and is seeking to revitalize the historical community center to increase tourism in the village.

This paper focused on safety considerations in Urban Air Mobility (UAM) through a cross-industry examination of commercial aviation, rotorcraft, and unmanned aerial systems (UAS). Although UAM promises transformative benefits, there are safety concerns remaining. Based on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s Concept of Operations (ConOps), the literature review explained the fundamental concepts of UAM. In commercial aviation, regulatory framework, pilot training and certification, vehicle design and maintenance, and emergency response planning are emphasized. For rotorcraft, safety requirements for vertical flight, collision avoidance systems, heliport standards, and weather adaptability are crucial.
