Prevention Vs Detection: A Discrete-Event Simulation Assessment Of Inspection Staffing, Pick-To-Light, And Ai-Based Inspection In Aerospace Wire Harness Kitting, Jorge Mares
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Aerospace wire harness manufacturing operates under conditions that standard industrial engineering methods were not designed to address. Volumes are low, configurations change between orders, assembly is performed manually by certified labor that cannot be expanded quickly, and IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3 acceptance requires that every unit be verified rather than sampled. Kit assembly concentrates the resulting risk, because each item retrieved from the rack is an independent selection decision, and the attributes distinguishing a correct item from an incorrect one are frequently not visible to the operator. Errors introduced there are discovered downstream, after substantial certified labor has been invested. A …
Electrical Characterization Of Wide-Bandgap Devices Via Laboratory Measurements, Tcad Simulation, And Analytical Modeling, Sebastian Alessandro Mimbela
Electrical Characterization Of Wide-Bandgap Devices Via Laboratory Measurements, Tcad Simulation, And Analytical Modeling, Sebastian Alessandro Mimbela
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Gallium nitride (GaN) devices are important for high-power, high-frequency, and harsh-environment applications because of their wide bandgap, high breakdown capability, and electrical performance. This thesis focuses on the electrical characterization of GaN-based devices using laboratory measurements, analytical modeling, and TCAD simulation. Current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements were performed on a GaN Schottky diode. The measured data were analyzed to extract key parameters such as ideality factor, Schottky barrier height, series resistance, donor concentration, built-in potential, depletion width, and maximum electric field. A TCAD process was also developed in Synopsys Sentaurus to recreate the main geometry, layer structure, contacts, and …
Unsupervised Learning For Minimum Error Adaptive Sampling Of Atmospheric Vertical Temperature Profiles, Alejandro Medina
Unsupervised Learning For Minimum Error Adaptive Sampling Of Atmospheric Vertical Temperature Profiles, Alejandro Medina
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) collect atmospheric data on fixed schedules, and endurance limits make blind searching costly. This thesis develops an unsupervised representation that summarizes a multi-decade radiosonde archive into a compact library of atmospheric states, giving a UAS an expectation of the column before it flies. The method standardizes both axes of a profile against the sounding's own surface conditions, which makes the representation independent of season and of station elevation. Applied to 27,270 soundings from Norman, Oklahoma, over the lowest 1.5 km of the atmosphere, 12 representative profiles reconstruct the record to within 1.0 °C of mean absolute …

From Screening To Risk: Assessment Of Potentially Toxic Elements In Children's Toys Along The El Paso, Tx, U.S.A.-Ciudad Juarez, Chih, Mex Border Region, Jesus Rodriguez-Loya
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Children are uniquely vulnerable to potentially toxic elements (PTEs), absorbing them more readily than adults and encountering them through the hand-to-mouth behaviors of early childhood. Exposure carries element-specific consequences: lead (Pb) impairs cognitive development with no established safe threshold; cadmium (Cd) damages the kidneys and reduces bone mineralization; arsenic (As) is a recognized carcinogen and developmental neurotoxicant; hexavalent chromium (Cr) is carcinogenic and induces allergic dermatitis; nickel (Ni) is the leading cause of allergic contact dermatitis in children; and excess zinc (Zn) disrupts copper absorption and causes gastrointestinal distress. Toys are a distinctive source of such exposure, yet none had …

Integrated Framework For Tsn-Enabled Ot Networks And Scalable Edge Computing To Enable Real-Time Feedback Loop, Taposh Kumer Sarker
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The advent of Industry 5.0 envisions smart manufacturing characterized by human centricity, sustainability, and systemic resilience. Realizing this vision requires the seamless convergence of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) networks. However, integrating massive, stochastic IT edge computing workloads with deterministic physical control loops introduces severe architectural friction, inherently threatening the safety guarantees required by industrial machinery. To resolve this fundamental incompatibility, this dissertation proposes the Edge-Augmented Real-Time Industrial Control System (EA-RICS).
EA-RICS is a comprehensive, multi-layered architecture designed to dismantle systemic bottlenecks across the physical data plane, the centralized control plane, and the edge operating system. First, the …
Lipid Peroxidation And Neurodegeneration In Niemann-Pick Type C Disease, Andrew J. Tolan
Lipid Peroxidation And Neurodegeneration In Niemann-Pick Type C Disease, Andrew J. Tolan
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis investigated the role of lipid peroxidation in Niemann-Pick type C (NPC) disease, a rare lysosomal storage disorder characterized by significant neurodegeneration, with a focus on its relationship to cholesterol accumulation and regional brain susceptibility to neurodegeneration. I hypothesized that cholesterol accumulation could lead to lipid peroxidation through non-enzymatic processes, independent of cell death or inflammation. In vitro experiments demonstrated higher levels of cholesterol accumulation and lipid peroxidation in NPC cells. Transcriptomic analysis of NPC mouse brains revealed significant upregulation of lipid peroxidation-related pathways in the more susceptible cerebellum compared to the cerebral cortex. Lipidomic analysis revealed higher baseline …
Improving Collective Aggregation Strategies For Hpc And Ai Workloads, Mikaila J. Gossman
Improving Collective Aggregation Strategies For Hpc And Ai Workloads, Mikaila J. Gossman
All Dissertations
Modern high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads increasingly generate data at rates that outpace the storage systems responsible for persisting it. While computational throughput has scaled dramatically through parallel processors, GPUs, and specialized accelerators, storage systems have improved far more slowly. As such, application performance is increasingly limited by the ability to move data efficiently through deep, heterogeneous storage hierarchies rather than by raw computational capability. This dissertation investigates how aggregation and data movement strategies must be redesigned to close this gap, addressing four central challenges: resource contention between foreground computation and background I/O, the fine-grained and irregular …
Bridging Models And Real-World Performance: Capturing Represented, Hidden, And Unrepresented Dynamics In Complex Systems, Dixizi Liu
All Dissertations
Complex systems often depend on adaptive performance that is difficult to capture using structured data or formal models alone. This dissertation asks how predictive modeling, coordination-cost measurement, and simulation can be integrated to better represent the visible, hidden, and unrepresented dynamics that shape real-world system performance.
Sterile Processing Departments (SPDs) provide the empirical context for this work because they support safe and timely surgical care while operating under high workload variability, time pressure, and tight coordination with operating rooms. Hospitals rely on SPDs to clean, assemble, sterilize, and deliver surgical instrument trays so surgeries can start on time and proceed …
Theory-Informed Generative Agents For Human Behavioral Modeling In Disasters, Liming Lu
Theory-Informed Generative Agents For Human Behavioral Modeling In Disasters, Liming Lu
All Dissertations
This dissertation develops a theory-informed generative-agent framework for modeling human behavioral decisions in disasters. Existing flood and disaster preparedness models often emphasize physical hazards, infrastructure exposure, or statistical correlations, but they struggle to capture the heterogeneous and evolving choices households make. This limitation is especially important for climate-related hazards, where future damage depends not only on changes in rainfall, inundation, and urban development, but also on decentralized protective actions such as house elevation, flood insurance, evacuation, and early preparedness. The dissertation integrates two empirical studies: a flood-risk study in Charleston, South Carolina, and a household disaster-preparedness study across hurricane contexts. …

Theory, Implementation, And Practical Applications Of A Modern Parabolized Navier-Stokes Code, Logan B. Freeman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
The Parabolized Navier-Stokes (PNS) method is a specialized computational approach for solving the equations that govern fluid flowing faster than the speed of sound, known as supersonic flow. By leveraging unique physical properties of supersonic environments—specifically that information cannot travel upstream—this method allows for significantly more efficient calculations than traditional approaches. Supersonic flows are important for many military and civilian applications including hypersonic weapons, high-speed passenger aircraft, and reentry. This thesis provides a comprehensive review of the two-dimensional PNS formulation, detailing the mathematical derivation and its practical implementation for solving flow problems. Through performance analysis and error assessment, this research …
Simulation Of Hypersonic Conditions In A Lab-Scale Environment Using A Hybrid Rocket With Nitrogen Cooling, Joshua R. Sorenson
Simulation Of Hypersonic Conditions In A Lab-Scale Environment Using A Hybrid Rocket With Nitrogen Cooling, Joshua R. Sorenson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Developing hypersonic vehicles requires testing under extreme heat, airflow, and pressure. Traditional facilities like shock tunnels and arc-heated wind tunnels are costly and slow to set up. This thesis proposes a simpler, low-cost method using a small-scale hybrid rocket motor as a gas generator. The rocket’s hot exhaust is directed onto the front edge of a scaled-down model that represents the nose of a hypersonic vehicle. This creates a realistic flow that matches both the intense heat energy and the pushing force experienced in high-altitude hypersonic flight. The setup allows easy measurement of motor performance, surface pressures, leading-edge temperatures, and …
The Impact Of Early Exposure To Engineering Concepts In The Form Of Family, School Classes, And Stem Extracurriculars On The Long-Term Sense Of Belonging In Undergraduate Women In Engineering, Hannah Lloyd
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Engineering continues to struggle with the underrepresentation of women, and many women who begin engineering programs report feeling isolated or uncertain about whether they belong. A strong sense of belonging has been linked to greater confidence, persistence, and success in engineering. This study examined how early experiences with engineering before college may influence students' sense of belonging later in their undergraduate engineering programs.
Using survey responses from undergraduate engineering students across the United States, this study explored several types of early exposure to engineering, including family influence, school-based engineering and STEM courses, extracurricular programs such as robotics clubs and engineering …

Strain Monitoring And Site Characterization At Birds Landing From Transmission Tower Implosions Recorded Using Das And Nodal Stations, Prajwal Panthi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
When two old electrical transmission towers in the Sacramento River Delta in California were demolished by Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Utah State University saw an opportunity hiding inside the demolition. Because one of the towers stood close to the Sacramento River and its protective levee, they used the controlled collapse not only to monitor strains in the levee and surrounding ground, but also to learn what lied beneath the ground surface.
To capture this event, the researchers buried a 1.4-kilometer fiber optic cable along the ground and connected it to a system called Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), which can …
Comparison Of Forces Generated By An Impinging Water Jet Using Numerical And Physical Experimentation, Spencer R. Young
Comparison Of Forces Generated By An Impinging Water Jet Using Numerical And Physical Experimentation, Spencer R. Young
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
When water is released from hydraulic structures such as dams water jets are formed and land on the downstream surfaces. When these jets land there is high potential for erosion or scour. Scour has the potential to compromise the structure and cause the uncontrolled release of water that can endanger downstream communities and infrastructure.
Engineers use tools including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to inform their designs to mitigate the risk of scour. This study compares how well CFD is able to model the forces created by a water jet by comparing the results to laboratory collected physical data. To make …

Reinforcement Learning For Cathode Material Design Through Sequential Decision-Making Frameworks, Taimoor Muzaffar Gondal, Muhammad Qasim, Yasir Arafat
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The cathode material design is a persistent challenge in the development of next-generation rechargeable batteries. The cathode performance is critically influenced by certain key parameters, i.e., composition, crystal structures, ion transport, and degradation behaviour. Moreover, techno-economic and sustainable considerations also play a pivotal role in the viable cathode material design. In recent years, the integration of static machine learning models with conventional experimental techniques has significantly enhanced the cathode material design. However, the sequential nature of cathode discovery has not been fully captured by these techniques as they do not update their decision strategy based on prior outcomes. In this …

Agdn: Learning To Solve Traveling Salesman Problem With Anisotropic Graph Diffusion Network, Bolin Shen, Ziwei Huang, Zhiguang Cao, Yushun Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is a cornerstone of combinatorial optimization and arises in many practical scenarios. Although graph-based learning approaches have been explored for TSP, the question of how to exploit graph structure more effectively remains open. We present the Anisotropic Graph Diffusion Network (AGDN), a new Graph Neural Network framework designed to solve TSP. Our method tackles two central difficulties: (1) the lack of informative topological prior in fully connected TSP graphs, and (2) losing connected nodes in the optimal solution after the commonly used graph sparsification techniques. To overcome these issues, we construct a MixScore transition matrix …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Neural Combinatorial Optimization (NCO) has emerged as a promising paradigm for solving Vehicle Routing Problems (VRPs), offering a compelling alternative to traditional heuristics. However, extending NCO to VRPs with complex constraints remains a significant challenge, as existing methods largely rely on hand-crafted feasibility masks, thereby bypassing the core difficulty of intrinsic constraint reasoning. In this paper, we identify a critical phenomenon in constrained VRPs termed the Global Cascading Effect: myopic local decisions can irreversibly lead to the collapse of the future feasible space, resulting in severe constraint violations. We systematically analyze why the prevailing Heavy Encoder Light Decoder (HELD) paradigm, …

In modern cities with small plots and narrow frontages, courtyard-based housing has come back as a flexible way to use space. This study seeks to quantitatively examine the impact of residential plot area and frontage width on the diversity and functional distribution of courtyards in modern urban housing. A quantitative morphological approach was used by looking at the shapes of 121 modern residential plans that included internal courtyards. Using AutoCAD, we got spatial data, and then we used Microsoft Excel to look at the relationships between plot morphology, courtyard number, area, and functional role. The results show that the courtyard …

Thermal Degradation Analysis Of Bagasse Fibers From Sugarcane Waste, Rashmitha Suresh, Faisal Al Nasser
Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)
Sugarcane is one of the important commodities in the industry where bagasse fiber as waste is abundantly available. Sugarcane bagasse fiber has high cellulose, a key element in the utilization of bagasse. Chemical pretreatment is important to prepare the natural fiber before used as composite reinforcement. The purpose of the study is to analyze the thermal degradation of bagasse fiber after being treated using NaOH and TEMPO solution. The manufacturing method was carried out by a series of washing bagasse with distilled water and NaOH solution, subsequently soaking it in 6% NaOH and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-l-oxyl (TEMPO) solution, and conducted oven-dried. Thermogravimetric …
Radiation Testing And Failure Analysis Of A Complex Heterogeneous Soc, Garrett Smith
Radiation Testing And Failure Analysis Of A Complex Heterogeneous Soc, Garrett Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Heterogeneous System on Chips (SoCs) provide a robust platform that can flexibly handle different applications. Their small form factor and low power consumption for their performance have made SoCs an attractive option for space applications. However, SoCs are sensitive to the ionizing radiation found in space. We need to understand how an SoC will behave in the high radiation found in space. This requires us to perform radiation testing of the SoCs on Earth to understand their behavior. The radiation testing and analysis of a heterogeneous SoC is complex as it contains multiple different processing cores, memories, and other system …

A Fuzzy–Neutrosophic Suitability Index For Selecting An Appropriate Reasoning Model Under Vagueness, Incompleteness, And Conflict, Nada A. Nabeeh, Ahmed Samy
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Fuzzy reasoning and neutrosophic reasoning are both used to handle uncertainty, but they are not intended for the same uncertainty structure. Fuzzy reasoning is suitable when uncertainty appears mainly as gradual vagueness, where a value may belong to a concept such as ``high risk'' or ``good performance'' to a certain degree. In this case, a membership value is often sufficient. Neutrosophic reasoning is more suitable when the problem also contains incomplete information, undecided evidence, or conflict between sources. In such cases, one membership degree may be too limited because it cannot represent support, rejection, and indeterminacy separately. This study introduces …

Foundations Of Neutrosophic N-Semirings Theory And Structural Properties, Raja Muhammad Hashim, Muhammad Gulistan, Muhammad Shahzad
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In this paper the concept of neutrosophic n-semirings (S∪ I, ∗ 1, ∗ 2, ∗ 3,..., ∗ n, ∗ n+1) has been introduced. The substructure of n-semirings (S∪ I, ∗ 1, ∗ 2, ∗ 3,..., ∗ n, ∗ n+1) has been defined and some useful results have been proved. Moreover, in order to familiarize the readers with these concepts some worthy examples have been coined. The left, right and two sided ideals of neutrosophic n-semirings have been paid a special heed. Finally we have turned our discussion towards the compatible and congruence …

Neutrosophic Time-Truncated Acceptance Sampling Plans Based On The Exponentiated Weibull Distribution For Reliability Applications, Divya P.R., Preethi John
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Classical acceptance sampling plans require precisely specified parameter values, an assumption routinely violated by measurement uncertainty and gauge imprecision in practice. This article develops Neutrosophic Time-Truncated Acceptance Sampling Plans (N-TTASP) for the Exponentiated Weibull (EW) distribution by representing the scale parameter as a neutrosophic interval. The neutrosophic sample size nN ∈ [nL, nU] and acceptance number cN ∈ [cL, cU] are obtained by minimizing n_U subject to dual producer and consumer risk constraints on the neutrosophic Operating Characteristic interval. A new indeterminacy ratio η is introduced as a …

Evaluating Generative Ai-Based User Interfaces Using An Integrated Neutrosophic Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Framework, Nada Mohamed, Alshaimaa A. Tantawy
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
User Interface (UI) design can be seen as an essential aspect of human-computer interaction (HCI) and makes communication easier between people and technology. In today's digital economy, interface quality has become one of the most important business concerns, since it has a direct impact on customer satisfaction and retention while affecting revenue. Although creating user-centered and accessible interfaces is crucial, doing so is a difficult and time-consuming process, which leads to burnout for many usability professionals. Although conventional artificial intelligence (AI) was utilized for design assessment and automation, the arrival of generative AI technology has created new possibilities for automated …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Uncertainty has been modeled through a wide variety of mathematical frameworks, including fuzzy sets, neutrosophic sets, rough sets, and plithogenic sets. Among these approaches, soft sets offer a parameterized representation of uncertain information and have inspired numerous extensions, such as multisoft sets, double-framed soft sets, hypersoft sets, SuperHyperSoft sets, TreeSoft sets, ForestSoft sets, IndetermSoft sets, and IndetermHyperSoft sets.
This paper focuses on GraphicSoft Sets, which extend the classical soft-set framework by assigning a subset of the universe to each subgraph of an attribute graph. In this way, relationships among attributes are incorporated directly into the parameterized model. Building on …

Enhanced Transdermal Immunization Via Solid-In-Oil Nanodispersions Incorporating Dendritic Cell-Targeting Peptide, Md Samiul Islam, Md. Shahin Ekka Sarker, Yoshirou Kawaguchi, Rie Wakabayashi, Noriho Kamiya, Muhammad Moniruzzaman, Masahiro Goto
Publications and Research
Transdermal immunization represents a promising needle-free alternative to conventional vaccination. However, efficient antigen delivery and robust immune activation remain major challenges. In this study, a solid-in-oil (S/O) nanodispersion system comprising a dendritic cell-targeting peptide (HR8), ovalbumin (OVA), and an adjuvant was developed for transdermal immunization. The HR8 peptide along with OVA was successfully incorporated into an S/O nanodispersion with an optimal hydrodynamic diameter of particles (< 200 nm) and exhibited stable physical properties for up to 90 days. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated enhanced antigen delivery with insignificant skin irritation in C57BL/6N mice. Moreover, in vivo transdermal immunization studies demonstrated that the addition of the HR8 peptide enhanced OVA-specific IgG responses (~1.5-fold). Notably, the HR8 peptide also promoted an approximately 2.5-fold increase in IgG2c levels, suggesting a shift toward a more T helper type 1-biased immune response, as reflected by an increased IgG2c/IgG1 ratio. Overall, these findings demonstrate that the incorporation of HR8 peptide into an S/O nanodispersion enables efficient transdermal antigen delivery and improved immunogenicity, highlighting its potential as a simple, non-invasive, and patient-friendly immunization strategy.

The Cosmic Fabric Model establishes a continuum-mechanics isomorphism to General Relativity by representing physical space as an elastic three-dimensional hyperplate embedded in a four-dimensional spatial bulk. Reproducing vacuum kinematics requires a vanishing P-wave modulus, which in turn implies a negative bulk modulus—an apparent thermodynamic instability in a closed system. This paradox is resolved by recasting the framework as an open system: the instability is not pathological but instead drives cosmic expansion. In this interpretation, the observable universe is a lower-energy solid formed through continuous solidification from a higher-dimensional precursor fluid. Using multiplicative kinematics from finite-growth mechanics, the model shows that …
