Introduction: Background: The application of municipal wastewater to the land or using the soil mantle as a wastewater treatment system has been practiced for many years. The history of land application dates back to ancient Athens. Sewage farming or the transportation of wastewater to rural areas for irrigation and disposal was practiced in Eurpose as early as 1559. The practice became fairly widespread in England, France, Germany, Poland, Austria, and the United States during the late 1800's [

The Forgotten Fundamentals Of The Energy Crisis, Albert A. Bartlett
The Forgotten Fundamentals Of The Energy Crisis, Albert A. Bartlett
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Papers at an energy conference may tend to deal with details. The details are important, but only if they relate to the national or global picture. We know that an energy crisis has motivated us to look at all manner of detail in regard to our own particular uses of energy. We hear political leaders of the United States speaking of "energy self-sufficiency" and of "Project Independence". We have the vague feeling that arctic oil from Alaska will relieve the energy crisis, and we are told that the United States is in good shape in the long run because of …

Energy Crisis And Food Crisis: The Role Of U.S. Agriculture, Dan Dvoskin, Earl O. Heady
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
An interregional linear programming model of U.S. agricultural production is used to analyze the economic ramifications of high energy prices and high agricultural exports by 1985. The study explains some of the changes that can be expected to take place if energy prices were to reach a level twice as high as 1974 energy prices. It also examines the response of agriculture to increased agricultural exports and the role of agriculture in the U.S. foreign trade.
Microbial Bioassay Techniques For Assessing Acid Mine Spoil Amendments For Revegetation, Michael A. Anderson
Microbial Bioassay Techniques For Assessing Acid Mine Spoil Amendments For Revegetation, Michael A. Anderson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The revegetation of sterile acid mine spoils is a costly and lengthy process due to the many factors (pH, toxic materials, low nutrients, poor soil structure, temperature, moisture, length of growing season, etc.) which impede the establishment of stable plant communities. A microbial bioassay technique applied to soil systems has been developed to allow a rapid (four weeks) and integrated (with respect to nutrients and toxicants) determination of the best amendments for stabilizing mine spoils by revegetation. Using mine spoil from the Blackbird Mine, Cobalt (near Salmon), Idaho, various comb illations of nitrogen, phosphorus, chelators, trace elements, potassium, manure and …

A Study Of Differences In Vertical Phosphorus Profiles Within The Sediments Of Selected Florida Lakes As Related To Trophic Dynamics, Edgar Allen Stewart Iii
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Several Florida lakes with different documented trophic state indices were selected for sediment analysis. Vertical sections of the sediment were taken at depths of .1, .5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 and l5 centimeters below the surface of the sediment-water interface. Total Phosphorus analysis was done on each section. The profile presented was then evaluated and was found that the profiles best fit the equation Y = X/ (A + BX), where Y is the Phosphorus Concentration in ppm and X is the sediment depth in cm. Correlation between the trophic state and the profiles characteristics are presented. …

The Effects Of Artificial Destratification On The Water Quality And Microbial Populations Of Hyrum Reservoir, Douglas D. Drury, Donald B. Porcella, Robert A. Gearheart
Reports
Artificial destratification is being increasingly used in attempts to improve water quality and control eutrophication. Most of the artificial destratification efforts are being conducted by public water supply utilities in efforts to improve reservoir water quality for culinary purposes. At present, artificial destratification is being conducted without a complete understanding of the process or its effects on the reservoir. Whether or not artificial destratification can control algal growth and other microbial processes is a controversial question. The effect of artificial destratification on the microbial flora must be understood if it is to be used effectively as a management tool in …

Widgeongrass (Ruppia maritima), muskgrass (Chara Sp.), and midge larvae (family Chironomidae) were grown under controlled greenhouse conditions using a solution of Logan tap water, 3000 ppm. sodium chloride, and an algicide-fungicide inhibiter. Soil, vegetation, and invertebrates came from a spring-fed marsh in western Utah. Ammonium sulfate, treble superphosphate, and sewage sludge fertilizers were applied to the plants at 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 75, 100, and 300 pounds per acre equivalents of ammonium sulfate; 5, 25, 50, 75, 100, and 300 pounds per acre equivalents of treble superphsophate; and 5, 25, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500,700, and …
The Evaluation Of An Activated Sludge Process At Elevated Temperatures, Peter J. Dawson
The Evaluation Of An Activated Sludge Process At Elevated Temperatures, Peter J. Dawson
Masters Theses
"The feasibility of utilizing the thermal energy from an electric power plant to operate an activated sludge process at elevated temperatures (above 40°C) was assessed.
The practicality of using this heat was determined from a heat transfer analysis and the operation of the activated sludge process was evaluated from laboratory studies of a batch process treating domestic and synthetic sewage.
The tank size for a thermophilic activated sludge chamber could be reduced by 40 to 50% as compared to ambient temperatures. For thermophilic processes a temperature of 55°C is recommended because the transition phase between mesophiles and thermophiles is around …

Theoretical Predictions Of Flow Profiles In Capillary Blood Vessels, Eileen Hallman
Theoretical Predictions Of Flow Profiles In Capillary Blood Vessels, Eileen Hallman
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the nature of blood flow within capillaries by using familiar mathematical techniques. Because the circulatory system is so complex, the fluid dynamics of the system is prefaced by a discussion of the circulatory physiology in terms of geometry and physics. The understanding of the basic structures and functions of the circulatory components necessarily precedes the justification of assumptions. Several mathematical models which attempt to describe the fluid dynamics of blood flow phenomena are presented and discussed. The results of these models are correlated with existing experimental data in order to determine which …

The Restoration Of Lake Waters, Charles James Boyter
The Restoration Of Lake Waters, Charles James Boyter
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Lake restoration procedures are reviewed with the objective of making recommendations toward future lake restorations for central Florida lakes. The progress of drawdown for restoration is examined. A total phosphorus model is developed for Lake Eola to predict the success of the drawdown. No one restoration procedure should be applied to every lake in central Florida. Each situation must be studied separately. It appears that lake drawdown was the best technique to use for Lake Eola. However, the stormwater inputs and free-flowing drains must be purified to insure the success of the drawdown or the Lake will return within the …
Effect Of Biological Activity On Pesticide Desorption, Loh-Tien Chiang
Effect Of Biological Activity On Pesticide Desorption, Loh-Tien Chiang
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this research study was to investigate the effect of biological activities on the desorption of pesticides from humic acid solids. The pesticides selected in this study are dieldrin and heptachlor, both of which have been commonly used in agricultural applications. The humic acid adsorbent was extracted from a coal-like substance called "leonardite", which has a humus content of as high as 53 percent by weight. The first step of this study involved a proper cultivation of biological culture so that the culture could be adapted to a test environment containing a high concentration of humic acids. The …
Flood Control Modeling, Peter E. Delle Donne
Flood Control Modeling, Peter E. Delle Donne
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This is a research report that discusses some continuous and discrete modeling techniques. The report applies these techniques to the analysis of Canal 38 (Kissimmee River) part of Central and South Florida Flood Control District. The analysis is based on recorded data for defining the physical systems parameters. Established parameters are mathematically related to define a descriptive model for Canal 38. The modeling procedure of 'trial and error' is used to assemble the model with measures of merit, the integral square error, and root mean squared error. General simulation considerations are discussed for application of the mathematical model.
Characterization And Staged Lagoon Treatment Of Swine Feedlot Waste, Abraham H. Loudermilk Jr.
Characterization And Staged Lagoon Treatment Of Swine Feedlot Waste, Abraham H. Loudermilk Jr.
Masters Theses
"Feedlot pollution is developing into a serious problem because of the trend toward intensive farming techniques and the increasing number of animals in confinement feeding operations. The purpose of this study was to characterize swine waste collected under a slotted feeding floor using a water-carriage system, and to evaluate the treatment of this waste in a staged lagoon system consisting of an anaerobic, a dual anaerobic-aerobic, and an aerobic lagoon. A small feeding floor unit capable of maintaining 3 separate groups of animals, and a pilot 3-lagoon system were designed, constructed, and operated for a period of approximately 4 months. …

The Hydraulics Of Waste Stabilization Ponds, Gary Z. Watters
The Hydraulics Of Waste Stabilization Ponds, Gary Z. Watters
Reports
The treatment efficiency of waste stabilization ponds depends primarily on the biological factors of type of waste and organic loading. However, the biological activity in a pond is greatly influenced by the environmental conditions of temperature, wind, sunlight, and the hydraulic flow patterns. In the past little attention has been given to the hydraulic characteristics of waste stabilization ponds such as the gross flow patterns within stabilization ponds as affected by the shape of the pond or lagoon, the presence of dead spaces, and positioning of inlets and outlets and the degree of density stratification. These hydraulic flow characteristics will …
