Development Of Low Cost, Environmentally Friendly And High Strength Carbon Foams From Bread And Cake, Laura Mountain-Tuller
Development Of Low Cost, Environmentally Friendly And High Strength Carbon Foams From Bread And Cake, Laura Mountain-Tuller
Materials Engineering
Carbon foam is a high niche material that consists of a highly porous, three-dimensional cellular network that is characterized by extremely high strength-to-weight ratios and low thermal conductivity. Due to these properties, carbon foams excel in structural and thermal applications, especially in the aerospace industry. Typically, carbon foams are formed through a heating process called pyrolysis of polymer precursors with high carbon content. This process is done at high temperatures in an oxygen free environment. These precursors are expensive to make and use toxic chemicals to produce, therefore, there is a push to find an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method …

Farmbot Trackless Redesign, Cole Thomas, Cailey Kamm, Clayton Alderson, Otto Akerstrom
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
For this project the team PLANT3D worked along with Rory Aronson and FarmBot to generate a cheaper more user-friendly design for the FarmBot Genesis 1.3. Working with Rory and FarmBot, we as a team generated a list of design requirements and engineering specifications for the project. These requirements centered around creating a more accessible FarmBot model for the average person to be able to purchase and set up with ease. Much of this required taking the existing system and eliminating the most common problem areas. These were the track system, built using 1.5 meter aluminum extrusions and the complex interchangeable …
Enhancing Mobility And Independence Of Wheelchair Users, Briar Blake, Paul Nauleau
Enhancing Mobility And Independence Of Wheelchair Users, Briar Blake, Paul Nauleau
Interdisciplinary Design Senior Theses
Conditions as simple as a leg fracture or more severe impairments such as paralysis and stroke may confine a person to a wheelchair. Wheelchairs help people with limited mobility transport themselves to different locations, but do not help the person leave the wheelchair. Users would need to do this to enter a car, use the restroom, take a shower, and sit at a table comfortably with family. The following design is a wheelchair attachment that serves to provide the user with increased mobility and independence. Wheelchair users struggle to get into and out of their chairs due to the unassisted …
A National Pragmatic Safety Limit For Nuclear Weapon Quantities, Joshua M. Pearce, David C. Denkenberger
A National Pragmatic Safety Limit For Nuclear Weapon Quantities, Joshua M. Pearce, David C. Denkenberger
Department of Materials Science and Engineering Publications
This study determines the nuclear pragmatic limit where the direct physical negative consequences of nuclear weapons use are counter to national interests, by assuming all unknowns are conservatively optimistic. The only effect considered is nuclear winter (“nuclear autumn” in the low weapons limits) and the resultant effects on the aggressor nation. First, the ability of low nuclear weapon limits is probed for maintaining deterrence in the worst-case scenario of attacking the most-populous nation. Second, the ability of aggressor nations to feed themselves is assessed without trade and industry resultant from a nuclear attack causing “nuclear autumn” (10% global agricultural shortfall). …

Analyzing A Small-Scale, Constructed Wetland For Stormwater Treatment, Juliann Apple, Pascal Schlee
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Research Publications
Stormwater treatment by means of constructed wetlands has the ability to effectively remove pollutants such as total suspended solids, nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia. Utilizing two small, lab-scale constructed wetlands, one free water flow system and one subsurface flow system, our research team analyzed the levels of these pollutants at different locations in the wetland. Our team of two Civil and Environmental Engineering undergraduate students tested a variety of different water samples including tap water, stormwater, and a high nitrate solution. A consistent decrease in nitrate and nitrite was observed throughout the systems. While there was not an overall decrease in …
Radical Social Ecology As Deep Pragmatism: A Call To The Abolition Of Systemic Dissonance And The Minimization Of Entropic Chaos, Arielle Brender
Radical Social Ecology As Deep Pragmatism: A Call To The Abolition Of Systemic Dissonance And The Minimization Of Entropic Chaos, Arielle Brender
Student Theses 2015-Present
This paper aims to shed light on the dissonance caused by the superimposition of Dominant Human Systems on Natural Systems. I highlight the synthetic nature of Dominant Human Systems as egoic and linguistic phenomenon manufactured by a mere portion of the human population, which renders them inherently oppressive unto peoples and landscapes whose wisdom were barred from the design process. In pursuing a radical pragmatic approach to mending the simultaneous oppression and destruction of the human being and the earth, I highlight the necessity of minimizing entropic chaos caused by excess energy expenditure, an essential feature of systems that aim …

Utah Agriculture Teachers’ Perceptions Of Teaching Urban And Non-Traditional Agriculture Content, Ashlee Cromer, Kelsey Hall, Tyson Sorensen, David Francis, Joshua Dallin
Applied Sciences, Technology, and Education Student Research
While agriculture teachers may focus on guiding students into agricultural and natural resource career pathways, many have expressed the need to prepare existing and upcoming agricultural educators with a more extensive set of skills and knowledge to better prepare students for a broader scope of career opportunities in agriculture. Agricultural education programs are expanding across the country, including more programs in urban areas, but agricultural education teachers often have little exposure or experiences related to less traditional agricultural careers that might be found in urban areas. Furthermore, agriculture teachers are often prepared to teach agricultural content through coursework that is …

Cell Culture Bioprocess Learnings: Past Successes And Future Challenges, Günter Jagschies
Cell Culture Bioprocess Learnings: Past Successes And Future Challenges, Günter Jagschies
Cell Culture Engineering XVI
Therapeutic proteins, vaccines and – further away – cell and gene therapies are considered essential to find efficacious interventions and preventive measures to a rather long list of prioritized needs in healthcare. The challenge is developing into a ‘tsunami’ of sorts as the global demographic transition causes populations to age, dramatically accelerating the growth of non-communicable disease (NCD) in all parts of the world. India and China are the markets with the largest patient population for almost any NCD, or they are going to be in that position soon. Competition in this field is ramping up with an intensity that …

Sustainable Agriculture: Integration Of Aquaponics At Punta Leona Hotel And Club In Costa Rica, Cailin Sierra Dyer, Paris Riley Smith
Sustainable Agriculture: Integration Of Aquaponics At Punta Leona Hotel And Club In Costa Rica, Cailin Sierra Dyer, Paris Riley Smith
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Sustainable agriculture is becoming an increasingly important method of food production. As human populations continue to grow, attendant food demand has been increasingly met via agribusiness, including monoculture crop production and factory farming. As is well documented, the rise of agribusiness has led to resource degradation and declining stocks on which “sustainable agriculture” relies. This paper describes a local attempt to re-establish “sustainable agriculture” through the development of an aquaculture system that mimics a naturally occurring cycle that integrates fish and plants. The system was constructed over a three-week period in Punta Leona, Costa Rica. First, the ground was cleared …

Can Your P2o5 Be Commercially Exploited?, Ewan Wingate, Michael E. Kelahan, M. Robert Kelahan
Beneficiation of Phosphates VIII
World reserves of high-grade, high-quality phosphate rock are steadily decreasing. As a result, lower quality rock is being increasingly evaluated to determine its potential for commercial exploitation. It is well known that the chemical and mineralogical composition of phosphate rock varies widely from deposit to deposit, and therefore, the conditions for processing different phosphate rock types also varies.
Unfortunately, most early stage phosphate feasibility studies tend to focus on the P2O5 content and neglect the other chemical constituents or impurities in the rock. It is the remainder of the chemical constituents that often define the quality of …

Nitrogen And Weed Management In Transplanted Tomato In The Nigerian Forest-Savanna Transition Zone, J. A. Adigun, O. S. Daramola, O. R. Adeyemi, P. M. Olorunmaiye, O. A. Osipitan
Haskell Agricultural Laboratory (Northeast Research and Extension Center)
Weed infestation and inherent low soil fertility are among primary reasons for low yields of tomato in Nigeria. Field trials were carried out during the wet season of 2015 and 2016 to evaluate yield response of tomato to nitrogen (N) application and weed control methods in the forest-savanna transition zone of Abeokuta, Nigeria. Positive relationship exists between growth of weed species and increase in N application. Across the years of study, increase in N up to 90 kg/ha increased weed density by 11–25%, however, the increased N gave the transplanted tomato competitive advantage and thus enhanced weed smothering. Pre-transplant application …
A Numerical Investigation Of Bio-Inspired Scaffolds And Surface Textures, Yucong Gu
A Numerical Investigation Of Bio-Inspired Scaffolds And Surface Textures, Yucong Gu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Synthetic scaffolds are widely used as implants to repair bone fracture. Without a proper design, scaffolds could pose significant health risks to the patient and fail to heal the bone properly. A good synthetic scaffold needs to have high porosity and large pore size to allow new bone cells to form on it. However, a scaffold with higher porosity and larger pore size tends to have reduced mechanical strength. Thus, it is important to find a structural design which allows the implant to have a high porosity and large pore size while retaining high strength. In this research, a 3D-printable …

Increasing Food Sharing In A Prek-8 School Cafeteria With Six Sigma, Sanukta Mylandla
Graduate Theses - Engineering Management
Six Sigma, a statistics-based methodology developed by Motorola in the mid-1980’s to help reduce defects, is a tool commonly applied across various industries to improve their processes by reducing variation. The statistical nature of Six Sigma makes process improvement a quantitative study garnering potential real savings to an organization. This project’s goal was to apply Six Sigma methodology to a PreK-8 school cafeteria in order to measure the daily levels of food waste and convert it into meaningful data to be used to promote food rescue and reuse at local elementary schools.
Nitrogen Doped Titanium Dioxide In The Photocatalytic Degradation Of Methylene Blue, Ashraya Upadhyaya
Nitrogen Doped Titanium Dioxide In The Photocatalytic Degradation Of Methylene Blue, Ashraya Upadhyaya
Senior Honors Theses
Titanium dioxide(TiO2) is a stable, effective and well-known photocatalyst for degradation of pollutants. However, its practical applications are limited due to the need for energy higher than 3.2 eV, or a wavelength lower than 390 nm (high frequency waves, ultraviolet and above) hindering its ability to effectively work in the visible light region (about 400 nm to 700 nm). Nitrogen-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2) has garnered some attention as a photocatalyst as it appears to work even in the visible light region. This could allow the utilization of a larger part of the solar spectrum. This thesis presents the results of photocatalytic …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In this research, a household water treatment system was built and evaluated as a trial for improving the drinking water quality of the Nile River for the low-income communities. The system consisted of household-scale slow sand filters, and transparent polyethylene terephthalate-bottles for solar disinfection. The evaluation of the system depended on the removal/inactivation of some surrogates for the reference pathogens, and turbidity. The reference pathogens are pathogens specified by the World Health Organization to evaluate the efficiency of the household water treatment options. They were chosen to represent the classes of pathogens in water (bacteria, viruses, protozoa). The surrogates used …
Investigations Of Polyhydroxyalkanoate Secretion And Production Using Sustainable Carbon Sources, Chad L. Nielsen
Investigations Of Polyhydroxyalkanoate Secretion And Production Using Sustainable Carbon Sources, Chad L. Nielsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a type of biologically-produced plastic known for their biocompatibility and biodegradability. They have the potential to replace petroleum-based plastics as an environmentally-friendly alternative. This is beneficial because the release of plastics into environments such as the ocean and the buildup of plastics in landfills are major concerns facing society today. Currently, however, PHAs are significantly more expensive than their petroleum-based counterparts. This is largely due to the cost of carbon sources and of extracting the bioplastics from bacteria. The goal of these studies was to examine replacing traditional carbon sources used in PHA production like sugar and …
Effects Of Hydration And Mineralization On The Mechanical Behavior Of Collagen Fibrils, Marco Fielder
Effects Of Hydration And Mineralization On The Mechanical Behavior Of Collagen Fibrils, Marco Fielder
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Bone is a composite biomaterial with a structural load-bearing function. Understanding the biomechanics of bone is important for characterizing factors such as age, trauma, or disease, and in the development of scaffolds for tissue engineering and bioinspired materials. At the nanoscale, bone is primarily composed of collagen protein, apatite crystals, and water. Though several studies have characterized nanoscale bone mechanics as the mineral content changes, the effect of water, mineral, and carbon nanotube (CNT) content and distribution in fibril gap and overlap regions is unexplored. This study used molecular dynamics to investigate the change in collagen fibril deformation mechanisms as …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Oxidative metabolism is required to produce adequate energy to sustain human life. A primary example of deteriorating oxidative capacity is seen in the cardiac musculature during chronic heart failure. This suggests that by improving oxidative potential, chronic heart disease could be mitigated and one approach to accomplish this may be through targeting the mt-mRNA translation system. Purpose: This investigation’s purpose was to characterize disruptions in mt-mRNA translation machinery in multiple forms of cardiomyopathy and to determine if mitochondrial mRNA translation initiation factor (mtIF2) is necessary to maintain oxidative capacity in cardiomyocytes. Methods Using a combination of animal and cell culture …
