Ultrasound-Guided Optical Techniques For Cancer Diagnosis: System And Algorithm Development, Atahar Kamal Mostafa May 2019

Ultrasound-Guided Optical Techniques For Cancer Diagnosis: System And Algorithm Development, Atahar Kamal Mostafa

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Worldwide, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. In the United States alone, the American cancer society has estimated there will be 271,270 new breast cancer cases in 2019, and 42,260 lives will be lost to the disease. Ultrasound (US), mammography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are regularly used for breast cancer diagnosis and therapy monitoring. However, they sometimes fail to diagnose breast cancer effectively. These shortcomings have motivated researchers to explore new modalities. One of these modalities, diffuse optical tomography (DOT), utilizes near-infrared (NIR) light to reveal the optical properties of tissue. NIR-based DOT images the contrast …

Improved Orthopaedic Repairs Through Mechanically Optimized, Adhesive Biomaterials, Stephen Wheeler Linderman May 2019

Improved Orthopaedic Repairs Through Mechanically Optimized, Adhesive Biomaterials, Stephen Wheeler Linderman

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Despite countless surgical advances over the last several decades refining surgical approaches, repair techniques, and tools to treat tendon and tendon-to-bone injuries, we are still left with repair solutions that rely on fairly crude underlying mechanical principles. Musculoskeletal soft tissues have evolved to transfer high loads by optimizing stress distribution profiles across the tissue at each length scale. However, instead of mimicking these natural load transfer mechanisms, conventional suture approaches are limited by high load transfer across only a small number of anchor points within tissue. This leads to stress concentrations at anchor points that often cause repair failure as …

Computational Modeling Of Bacterial Outer Membranes And Development Of High-Throughput Screening Platform For Antibiotics, Huilin Ma May 2019

Computational Modeling Of Bacterial Outer Membranes And Development Of High-Throughput Screening Platform For Antibiotics, Huilin Ma

Dissertations - ALL

Antibiotic resistance is a major health challenge because it limits the treatment options for common infectious diseases and will cause 10 million deaths each year after 2050. There is an urgent need to reduce the misuse of antibiotics and seek new classes of antibiotics that induce less or no resistance. Despite the push for new therapeutics, there has been a precipitous decline in the number of newly approved antibacterial drugs due to a limited understanding of how bacteria adapt to the chemical stress stimuli. The development of antimicrobial resistance is especially true for Gram-negative bacteria that develop resistance to antibiotics …

Enhancing Anaerobic Oxidation Of Methane In Landfill Cover Soil, Niloofar Parsaeifard May 2019

Enhancing Anaerobic Oxidation Of Methane In Landfill Cover Soil, Niloofar Parsaeifard

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Methane (CH4) is one of the major greenhouse gases (GHG) generated in landfills and has a global warming effect 28 times more than carbon dioxide (CO2). Therefore, decreasing methane emissions into the atmosphere from landfills is critically important. In the upper portions of a landfill cover, methane is exposed to oxygen and oxidized aerobically to carbon dioxide while passing through the cover soil; this lowers the overall contribution of the landfill to climate change. However, because of the low permeability of the landfill cover, no aerobic oxidation occurs in the bottom of the cover because oxygen cannot penetrate to those …

Preliminary Automated Determination Of Edibility Of Alternative Foods: Non-Targeted Screening For Toxins In Red Maple Leaf Concentrate, Joshua M. Pearce, Maryam Khaksari, David C. Denkenberger

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Alternative food supplies could maintain humanity despite sun-blocking global catastrophic risks (GCRs) that eliminate conventional agriculture. A promising alternative food is making leaf concentrate. However, the edibility of tree leaves is largely uncertain. To overcome this challenge, this study provides the methods for obtaining rapid toxics screening of common leaf concentrates. The investigation begins with a non-targeted approach using an ultra-high-resolution hybrid ion trap orbitrap mass spectrometer with electrospray ionization (ESI) coupled to an ultra-high pressure two-dimensional liquid chromatograph system on the most common North American leaf: the red maple. Identified chemicals from this non-targeted approach are then cross-referenced with …

Improved Production Of Antifungal Angucycline Sch47554 By Manipulating Three Regulatory Genes In Streptomyces Sp. Scc-2136, Ozkan Fidan, Riming Yan, Du Zhu, Jixun Zhan

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Sch47554 and Sch47555 are two angucyclines with antifungal activities against various yeasts and dermatophytes from Streptomyces sp. SCC‐2136. The schgene cluster contains several putative regulatory genes. Both schA4 and schA21were predicted as the TetR family transcriptional regulators, whereas schA16shared significant similarity to the AraC family transcriptional regulators. Although Sch47554 is the major product of Streptomyces sp. SCC‐2136, its titer is only 6.72 mg/L. This work aimed to increase the production of this promising antifungal compound by investigating and manipulating the regulatory genes in the Sch47554 biosynthetic pathway. Disruption of schA4and schA16 led to a significant increase …

Novel Calibrated Short Tr Recovery (Castrr) Method For Brain-Blood Partition Coefficient Correction Enhances Gray-White Matter Contrast In Blood Flow Measurements In Mice, Scott W. Thalman, David K. Powell, Ai-Ling Lin Apr 2019

Novel Calibrated Short Tr Recovery (Castrr) Method For Brain-Blood Partition Coefficient Correction Enhances Gray-White Matter Contrast In Blood Flow Measurements In Mice, Scott W. Thalman, David K. Powell, Ai-Ling Lin

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The goal of the study was to develop a novel, rapid Calibrated Short TR Recovery (CaSTRR) method to measure the brain-blood partition coefficient (BBPC) in mice. The BBPC is necessary for quantifying cerebral blood flow (CBF) using tracer-based techniques like arterial spin labeling (ASL), but previous techniques required prohibitively long acquisition times so a constant BBPC equal to 0.9 mL/g is typically used regardless of studied species, condition, or disease. An accelerated method of BBPC correction could improve regional specificity in CBF maps particularly in white matter. Male C57Bl/6N mice (n = 8) were scanned at 7T using CaSTRR …
