The Design Of Passive Solar Heating Systems, Gordon L. Moore Oct 1976

The Design Of Passive Solar Heating Systems, Gordon L. Moore

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The many facets of passive design are spelled out in a series of design choices. Starting with the surrounding elements and their effects on the building's energy uses, the procedure moves inward through the envelope, finally considering the thermal dynamics of the structure and its construction materials.

Human Resources In Electrical Energy Conservation, Tom Day Oct 1976

Human Resources In Electrical Energy Conservation, Tom Day

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

With America's increasing inability to produce, secure and conserve its own energy resources, many social and technical changes will have to take place in order to shift the tide of events from an increasing dependence upon foreign imports of energy stocks. The first change which must take place is within us: To be aware of the need and impetus to conserve energy of all forms so that we may buy time in which to properly assess where we are going, how we are going to achieve energy independence and once we get there, how it will be managed. Electrical energy …

De Facto Limits To Growth: Federal Environmental Policy And Domestic Energy Development In The United States, Richard H. K. Vietor Oct 1976

De Facto Limits To Growth: Federal Environmental Policy And Domestic Energy Development In The United States, Richard H. K. Vietor

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

This paper argues that public environmental policy, since 1969, has imposed de facto limits on the growth of America's economy. A plethora of regulations, in response to widespread public resistance to industrial growth, has already circumscribed energy developments to the point of inertia. These national policies reflect changed public values, the implications of which should be acknowledged and evaluated by corporate and governmental energy planners and by the energy consumer as well.

Analytic Modeling Of Gain‐Switched Lasers. Ii. Laser Amplifiers, Lee W. Casperson Oct 1976

Analytic Modeling Of Gain‐Switched Lasers. Ii. Laser Amplifiers, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The pulse transfer characteristics of gain‐switched laser amplifiers are investigated analytically. New closed‐form solutions have been obtained including arbitrary space‐ and time‐dependent pump distributions. The general results are specialzied to the important cases of uniform and traveling‐wave excitation. Input‐pulse shapes considered include step functions, practial oscillator output pulses, and also the inherent spontaneous‐emission noise. The results lead to improved models for pulse amplifiers and mirrorless traveling‐wave lasers. By proper choice of pump characteristics arbitrary output‐pulse waveforms can be synthesized.

Modulated Generalized Ellipsometry, R. M.A. Azzam Jun 1976

Modulated Generalized Ellipsometry, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

We extend ellipsometry to the direct measurement of small perturbations of the Jones matrix of any linear nondepolarizing optical sample (system) subjected to a modulating stimulus such as temperature, stress, or electric or magnetic field. The methodology of this technique, to be called Modulated Generalized Ellipsometry (MGE), is presented. First an ellipsometer with arbitrary polarizing and analyzing optics is assumed, and subsequently the discussion is specialized to a conventional ellipsometer having either the polarizer-sample-analyzer (PSA) or the polarizer-compensator-sample-analyzer (PCSA) arrangement. MGE provides the tool for the systematic study of thermo-optical, piezo-optical, electro-optical, magneto-optical, and other allied effects for both isotropic …

A system is currently being implemented at the New Jersey Institute of Technology which allows such individuals to engage in a written form of conversation with other individuals or groups. Here the computer stores the discussion and keeps track of what everyone has or has not seen, so participants can communicate at a time and pace of their choosing. There is also provision for a range of ancillary facilities such as voting, word processing, …

Constant-Rate-Of-Strain And Controlled-Gradient Consolidation Testing, C. Thomas Gorman May 1976

Constant-Rate-Of-Strain And Controlled-Gradient Consolidation Testing, C. Thomas Gorman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Controlled-gradient (CG), constant-rate-of-strain (CRS), and conventional incremental-loading (STD) consolidation testing are compared and evaluated. Undisturbed samples representing three soils common to Kentucky were used in the testing program. Settlements estimated by each testing technique were compared with settlement records from one of the sites. Results of 15 CG, 14 CRS, and 32 STD consolidation tests are shown. No significant differences were noted in values obtained from the three types of consolidation tests. Feasibility of the new test methods for routine testing is briefly discussed and recommendations were made for refinements in testing procedures.

Determination Of Lead Content In Apical Tissue Following Root Canal Obturation With Sargenti's Formula, G. Merle Hickok May 1976

Determination Of Lead Content In Apical Tissue Following Root Canal Obturation With Sargenti's Formula, G. Merle Hickok

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Four Stump-tail monkeys were used to help determine if the lead in Sargenti's formula diffuses out into the apical tissue while confined entirely within the root canal. In each animal two teeth were filled with Sargenti's formula 1-2 millimeters short of the radiographic apex, and two teeth were filled with gutta percha and Proco-Sol sealer for controls, making a total sample size of sixteen. The time ranged from 48 hours to 120 days. Lead analysis using the spectrophotometric method showed a higher lead content in the teeth filled with Sargenti's formula than with the gutta percha controls.

This thesis "System Safety in Rail Transportation," is addressed to an individual having a basic technical background but little or no experience in this field. The thesis discusses the need for and the benefits to be obtained by using system safety techniques and principles in the railroad industry. Examples of typical railroad accidents are reviewed, and it is pointed out that analysis of the hazards in the railroad industry prior to the accidents would have identified problems which eventually resulted in the accidents. The system safety approach, which was developed for use in the aerospace and aviation fields, has proved …

A Computer Simulation Of A Weapons Fire Simulator Modeled By Sceptre As An Optical Communication Channel, John James Cormack Jan 1976

A Computer Simulation Of A Weapons Fire Simulator Modeled By Sceptre As An Optical Communication Channel, John James Cormack

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents a method of simulating various noise sources in a Weapons Fire Simulator System which has been modeled as an Optical Communication Channel. This Weapons Fire Simulator System is composed of laser transmitters mounted on weapons that fire blank cartridges, and laser receivers mounted on targets. The laser transmitter sends out 'kill' beam pulses to the target whenever blank cartridges are fired. Detection of these pulses at the target signifies a 'hit'. The entire system along with the optical communication channel is simulated in a general purpose computer program called SCEPTRE. This analysis package is an efficient means …

Evaluation Of The Addition Of Granular Media Filtration To Wastewater Treatment Plants To Meet New Standards, Madhusudan M. Dawda, M. L. Davidson, E. J. Middlebrooks Jan 1976

Evaluation Of The Addition Of Granular Media Filtration To Wastewater Treatment Plants To Meet New Standards, Madhusudan M. Dawda, M. L. Davidson, E. J. Middlebrooks

Reports

A dual media filtration study was carried out at the central Weber Wastewater Treatment Plant in Ogden, Utah, to evaluate its feasibility as a tertiary treatment to meet new effluent quality standards. A review of the literature indicated that dual media filters were more efficient than conventional single media sand filters because of the “in depth” filtration achieved by dual media filters. An experimental filter was operated at four different hydraulic loading rates, ranging from 3 to 6 gpm/ft 2 (122.10 to 244.20 1/min/m2), to evaluate its effects on effluent quality. Hydraulic loading rate was shown not to affect suspended …
