Co-Metabolism Of Pentachlorophenol With Glucose Using Two-Stage Anaerobic Activated Carbon Fluidized Beds, Zen Wang
Theses
Abstract - Detoxification of pentachlorophenol by using a two-stage anaerobic biological activated carbon fluidized bed has been investigated. Glucose was introduced as a cosubstrate to determine the relationship between the glucose/PCP ratio and the extent of PCP detoxification in such a system. This system has been proved to be effective in the removal of both PCP and COD. Ratio of glucose to PCP predominates the performance of the system throughout the whole course of this experiment. At a glucose/PCP ratio of 0.33, the system has a highest reduction of both PCP and COD. Addition of glucose to the highly PCP …

A Volume Integral Formulation For Electromagnetic Scattering From Homogeneous Dielectric Bodies, Mark Joseph Povinelli
A Volume Integral Formulation For Electromagnetic Scattering From Homogeneous Dielectric Bodies, Mark Joseph Povinelli
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science – Theses
In recent years, printed circuit antennas have become very useful in conformal and planar phased array antenna systems. Of particular interest is the radiation and scattering performance of stripline and microstrip printed circuit antenna array-elements used in these systems. These elements are generally made up of a complex three-dimensional distribution of dielectrics and conductors, which can include microstrip or stripline feed circuitry on a dielectric substrate. Figure 1 shows the geometry of a typical multilayer printed circuit stripline-fed flared slot antenna, used as an array-element in a multioctave planar phased array antenna. This antenna element design also incorporates a stripline …

Variable Angle Spectroscopic Magneto-Optics And Ellipsometry: Application To Dyco Multilayers, Thomas E. Tiwald, William A. Mcgahan, Z. S. Shan, Alan M. Massengale, John A. Woollam
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we describe the adaptation of a variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometer (VASE) to magneto-optic measurements covering 3000–8000 Å, and 0 to ±8 kOe. Second, we describe application of VASE to determine Kerr rotation and ellipticity for a series of Dy/Co multilayers prepared by sputter deposition. We report spectroscopic ellipsometric and Kerr effect results for samples exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, since these are relevant as magneto-optic recording media.

Reflectance Of An Absorbing Substrate For Incident Light Of Arbitrary Polarization: Appearance Of A Secondary Maximum At Oblique Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam, A. M. El-Saba
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
The reflectance of an absorbing substrate Rθ(ɸ) is considered as a function of the angle of incidence ϕ and an incident polarization parameter θ, where cos2θ and sin2θ give the power fractions of incident radiation that are p-and s-polarized, respectively. Taking GaAs as an example, we find that at certain wavelengths (e.g., 0.248 and 0.620 µm), the Rθ vs ɸ curve becomes oscillatory in a narrow range of θ > 45° with an unexpected secondary maximum appearing at oblique incidence. The extrema of the function Rθ(ɸ) are determined numerically, and their angular …

Analysis And Design Of A Surface Microengineered Silicon Humidity Sensor, Uei-Yanq Chen
Theses
This thesis details the design for a solid-state humidity sensor which utilizes state-of-the-art silicon technology. The sensor design utilizes a microengineered surface which includes a polysilicon airbridge structure as heater and sensor element in an integrated device. The operation of this device depends upon the small variation of thermal convection coefficient which effects the temperature of the heated element within the device. The temperature of the polysilicon bridge is monitored by means of a resistance bridge. In one design(sensor I) a single polysilicon airbridge is used for both the heater and resistance sensing element. Also a second inferior design (sensor II) …

Division-Of-Wave-Front Thin-Film Beam Splitter For Generating Binary Patterns Of Orthogonal Elliptical Polarization States, R. M.A. Azzam
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
A division-of-wave-front thin-film beam splitter is described that reflects monochromatic light at oblique incidence with orthogonal elliptical polarization states. It consists of a metallic substrate partially covered with a transparent thin film that inverts the ratio ρ of the complex p and s reflection coefficients at the principal angle of the metal. Any pattern of coated and uncoated areas of the substrate is imprinted upon the reflected wave front as a corresponding two-dimensional spatial binary polarization pattern. A specific design is given that uses a Au substrate at a wavelength of 632.8 nm. The effects of small errors in the …

Maximizing Reliable Crop Production In A Dynamic Stream/Aquifer System, Richard C. Peralta, K. Kowalski, R. R.A. Cantiller
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
A procedure for planning the optimal spatial distribution of crops to be reliably irrigated by conjunctive use of water resources is presented. The implicitly stochastic procedure utilizes. simulation/ optimization model of • stream/ aquifer system. The model utilizes linear optimization, hydrologic influence coefficients and time-varying crop water production functions. It appropriately simulates the time variant, interdependent responses of groundwater levels, stream nap and stream/aquifer interflow to groundwater pumping, and diversion of river water to nonriparian lands. It determines the temporally and spatially varying distribution of groundwater and diverted river water that should be utilized In order to maximizing annual crop …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An X-band FM-CW very fine range resolution scatterometer was used to acquire backscattering data for individual branches for a number of tree species. Using a model to describe the scattering source function, dσ/dR = f(η, κ), and an experimental procedure for selected removal of plant parts, allows the estimation of η, the volume backscatter coefficient, and κ, the volume extinction coefficient. It is found that 1) leaves are strong attenuators as well as scatterers, 2) the albedo, ω = η/κ, at a given angle of incidence, is nearly independent of the tree type, 3) the tree …
Simulation Of Aids Patient Detoxification By An Extracorporeal Device And Related Experimental Studies, Mansoor Yusuf Kapadvanjwala
Simulation Of Aids Patient Detoxification By An Extracorporeal Device And Related Experimental Studies, Mansoor Yusuf Kapadvanjwala
Theses
A simple numerical simulation of an AIDS patient detoxification by an extracorporeal device for the removal of virus has been designed. The mathematical model accounts for healthy white cells (W) attacking and destroying the virus (V), while at the same time the virus attacks and infects certain white cells. The infected white cells (Wi) serve as a site for viral growth, and finally the cell is lysed, releasing a large number of viruses in the blood stream. This model can be used to predict concentrations over a given period for the patient.
The device incorporates an antitwister mechanism …

Oxidation Of Toluene, Benzene And P-Xylene In A Photoreactor, Shiey-Shiun Horng
Theses
A new photoreactor was designed with stainless steel to oxidize refractory chemicals found on the EPA priority list. This new system was investigated by conducting experiments with three three model compounds, namely, toluene benzene and p-xylene. While toluene and benzene reactions are similar, they are faster with UV/ozone than UV/H2O2 and p-xylene reacts even faster with UV/ozone than UV/H2O2. The experimental data obtained were analyzed by GC and used to interpret the reaction kinetics from proposed models. The rate constants and mass transfer coefficients were found by using the Rosenbsrock Hillclimb optimization algorithm. …

Extrema Of The Magnitude And The Phase Of A Complex Function Of A Real Variable: Application To Attenuated Internal Reflection, R. M.A. Azzam
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
Given a complex function F(ω) = |F(ω)|exp[jΔ(ω)] of a real argument ω, the extrema of its magnitude |F(ω)| and its phase Δ(ω), as functions of ω, are determined simultaneously by finding the roots of one common equation, Im[G(ω)] = 0, where G= (F′/F)2 and F′ = ∂F/∂ω. The extrema of |F| and Δ are associated with Re G < 0 and Re G > 0, respectively. This easy-to-prove theorem has a wide range of applications in physical optics. We consider attenuated internal reflection (AIR) as …

Estimation Of In-Situ Compression Index Of Contaminated Clays Using The Electrical Method, Prasanna Ratnaweera
Estimation Of In-Situ Compression Index Of Contaminated Clays Using The Electrical Method, Prasanna Ratnaweera
Theses
For contaminated clay soils, it has been found that current testing methods to determine compressibility characteristics do not truly identify the physico-chemiral interaction present in the soil-pore fluid-electrolyte system. Most methods are virtually impracticable due to various reasons such as evaporation of pore-fluid, difficulty of handling toxic chemicals, etc. Also, destructive test methods may not maintain in-situ conditions while testing.
The electrical properties of soils, the dielectric dispersion in particular is considered to represent the amount of physico-chemical interaction present in the soil-pore fluid-electrolyte system. For uncontaminated soils, correlations between the dielectric dispersion and the slope of the isotropic consolidation …

Simultaneous Velocity Measurements With Uniaxial Loading On Weak Sandstone From Iraq, Zuhair Rammo Fattohi
Simultaneous Velocity Measurements With Uniaxial Loading On Weak Sandstone From Iraq, Zuhair Rammo Fattohi
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Transit pulse wave times through a weakly cemented sandstone rock being measured on prismatic specimens with and without initial plane of weakness, which is uniaxially loaded at different stages. The velocity, Elastic moduli bulk compressibility, and vertical strain were calculated for each loading level. Results have shown, that such rock properties have changed dramatically. Thus they should be considered thoroughly for any engineering evaluation in such rock type.

A Study Of Dynamic Pile-Soil Interaction, P. Srinivasulu, N. Lakshmanan, K. Muthumani, B. Sivarama Sarma
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The paper discusses briefly the state of art on the subject of pile dynamics including consideration of soil-pile interaction. An analytical model which gives the response of a single pile buried in a layered soil medium considering variation in soil properties in the radial direction in each layer is illustrated. The paper also presents an experimental study on a full size test pile 40 cm dia and 7 m long driven into a five layered soil stratum. The results of the analytical and experimental studies are compared and suggestions for further work are given.

Comparisons Between Field And Analytical Behavior Of An Experimental Excavation, Roberto Azevedo, Nilo Consoli
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper analyses the behaviour of an experimental unsupported excavation taken to failure in a soft clay deposit near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The excavation was originally analyzed by Pontes Filho and Medeiros (1982) assuming undrained conditions. In this paper, the same excavation is analyzed by Biot's coupled theory of consolidation and deformation using linear elastic, non-linear-elastic and elasto-plastic constitutive models and simulating the excavation process in time, without a – priori hypothesis on the drainage conditions. Details of the excavation construction, geotechnical profile and instrumentation are briefly described. Subsequently, the constitutive model calibrations are discussed in view of laboratory …

Case History Of Maneri-Uttarkashi Power Tunnel, R. K. Goel, J. L. Jethwa, B. Singh
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A 8.56 km long circular tunnel of 4.75 m diameter has been constructed under Maneri hydel project on the river Bhagirathi. The tunnel passes alternatively through quartzitic and metabasic rock formations of the young Himalayan terrain. Tunnel excavation was started from four faces, one at the upstream end at maneri, two from an intermediate adit at Heena, and one at the downstream end near Uttarkashi where a 80 MW surface powerhouse is located. In excavating the tunnel from different faces, the problems of tunnel face collapse with heavy ingress of water, cavity formations and large tunnel closures leading to buckling …

A Finite Element Analysis Of The Utah "Thistle" Failure, Blaine D. Leonard, Joseph M. Olsen
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In the Spring of 1983, a large landslide occurred near the town of Thistle, Utah which blocked major transportation routes and impounded the Spanish Fork River, inundating the town with 200 feet of water. While much attention has been given to the slide and its impact, very little has been directed toward a quantitative understanding of its causes. An analysis was performed of the Thistle landslide using the SEEPSLOPE finite element system in order to evaluate the mechanisms, factors, and causes of the failure. An elastic, perfectly-plastic stress-strain curve was employed in the analysis to model the behavior of the …

Simultaneous movement of oil, water, and air in a sandy porous medium was investigated experimentally under transient flow conditions and results were compared to numerical simulations employing a finite element multiphase flow code. The liquid hydrocarbon was Soltrol 170, a low-density branched alkane mixture. Liquid saturations were measured using a collinear dual-energy gamma radiation apparatus and liquid pressures were measured using hydrophilic (untreated) and hydrophobic (treated) ceramic tensiometers connected to pressure transducers. The experimental regime was selected to impose monotonically draining water and total liquid saturation paths to avoid hysteretic effects. Measured saturations and pressures are compared to values obtained …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper describes a number of case studies by using numerical procedures conducted by the author and his co-workers over a number of years. The case studies involve a wide range of static and dynamic stress-deformation, seepage and stability, and consolidation problems. The numerical procedures use simple linear and nonlinear elastic models, to advanced but simplified hierarchical plasticity based models for geologic materials and interfaces/joints. The evolution from the use of simple to advanced models is guided by the realization that it is essential to employ models that are capable of handling the complexities in geotechnical systems. In addition to …

Epoxy Resin Grout System For Solutions To Traditional Geotechnical Problems, A. V. Shroff, D. P. Amin, D. L. Shah
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Use of chemicals for foundation treatment and sealing of crack is of recent origin. The aim of this paper is to find time-viscosity and time-strength relationships of epoxy grout system for proper flow mechanism and strength interaction with rock collected from dam sites of India. The bonding mechanism of gel in the injected mass is explained with the help of Scanning electron microscopy and Infra-red spectroscopy. After trial field grouting the stratascopy has revealed better bonds of moist surface with flexibility to accommodate movement before bond or shear failure occurred and had lower volumetric shrinkage during curing.
