Kinetic Analysis Of The Bacterial Reduction Of Goethite, Chongxuan Liu, John M. Zachara, James K. Fredrickson, Cynthia Brinkman
Kinetic Analysis Of The Bacterial Reduction Of Goethite, Chongxuan Liu, John M. Zachara, James K. Fredrickson, Cynthia Brinkman
United States Department of Energy: Publications
The kinetics of dissimilatory reduction of goethite (RFeOOH) was studied in batch cultures of a groundwater bacterium, Shewanella putrefaciens, strain CN32 in pH 7 bicarbonate buffer. The rate and extent of goethite reduction were measured as a function of electron acceptor (goethite) and donor (lactate) concentrations. Increasing goethite concentrations increased both the rate and extent of Fe(III) reduction when cell and lactate concentrations were held constant. However, constant initial reduction rates were observed after normalization to the Fe(II) sorption capacity of FeOOH, suggesting that the bacterial reduction rate was first order with respect to surface site concentration. Increasing …

Microbial Reduction Of Fe(Iii) And Sorption/Precipitation Of Fe(Ii) On Shewanella Putrefaciens Strain Cn32, Chongxuan Liu, John M. Zachara, Yuri Gorby, Jim Szecsody, Christopher Brown
United States Department of Energy: Publications
The influence of Fe(II) on the dissimilatory bacterial reduction of an Fe(III) aqueous complex (Fe(III)-citrateaq) was investigated using Shewanella putrefaciens strain CN32. The sorption of Fe(II) on CN32 followed a Langmuir isotherm. Least-squares fitting gave a maximum sorption capacity of Qmax = 4.19 x 10-3 mol/1012 cells (1.19 mmol/ m2 of cell surface area) and an affinity coefficient of log K = 3.29. The growth yield of CN32 with respect to Fe(III)aq reduction showed a linear trend with an average value of 5.24 (±0.12) x 109 cells/mmol of Fe(III). The reduction of …

A Practical Guide To Estimating Cleanup Costs, Mike Goldstein, Jon Ritterling
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Cost estimates are frequently developed to evaluate hazardous-waste-site cleanup options in support of a site investigation, remedy selection decision, or assessment of environmental liabilities. The accuracy of the cost estimate depends largely on the quality of the information available at the time it is prepared. This article presents a practical guide to developing a cleanup cost estimate. It includes information on how to document assumptions, use the latest technical resources, and perform basic adjustments to account for uncertainty and the time value of money. The content is based upon a recent guidance document issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency …
Accounting For Domain Context In Evaluation, Meriem Chater, David G. Novick
Accounting For Domain Context In Evaluation, Meriem Chater, David G. Novick
Departmental Papers (CS)
Work is situated activity. Taking into account human factors in evaluation involves considering not only users but also their contexts of use. Consequently, the evaluation of systems — from video-games to safetycritical interfaces — requires analysis of context to understand not only the effect of context on usability but also the impact of artifacts' usability on users' environments. In the case of safety-critical systems (SCS), errors (by users or designers) may threaten human lives.
To assess the degree to which interface evaluation methods currently account for context, we have used the research strategy taxonomy of McGrath as a framework for …
Design And Applications Of Volume Holographic Optical Elements, Steven C. Dunn
Design And Applications Of Volume Holographic Optical Elements, Steven C. Dunn
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Volume gratings were studied both theoretically and experimentally in order to design and analyze practical volume holographic optical elements. The diffraction of finite (Gaussian) beams by transmission gratings is investigated. A closed form solution for the off-Bragg profiles is obtained, and the distortion in the resulting profiles is analyzed. Criteria for when the finiteness of the beam has a minimal effect on the angular selectivity response are given. A model is developed to investigate the cross talk in multiplexed gratings Experimental verification in LiNb03 and PTR glass is demonstrated. The diffraction efficiency and output profiles of finite beams diffracted …

Construction Of A Derivative Of Agrobacterium Tumefaciens C58 That Does Not Mutate To Tetracycline Resistance, Zhao-Qing Luo, Thomas E. Clemente, Stephen K. Farrand
Construction Of A Derivative Of Agrobacterium Tumefaciens C58 That Does Not Mutate To Tetracycline Resistance, Zhao-Qing Luo, Thomas E. Clemente, Stephen K. Farrand
Nebraska Center for Biotechnology: Faculty and Staff Publications
Agrobacterium tumefaciens C58 mutates to tetracycline resistance at high frequency, complicating the use of many broad-host-range cloning and binary vectors that code for resistance to this antibiotic as the selection marker. Such mutations are associated with a resistant gene unit, tetC58, that is present in the genome of this strain. By deleting the tetC58 locus, we constructed NTL4, a derivative of C58 that no longer mutates to tetracycline resistance. The deletion had no detectable effect on genetic or physiological traits of NTL4 or on the ability of this strain to transform plants.
Linear-Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics Theory For Coupled Heat And Mass Transport, Yaşar Demirel, Stanley I. Sandler
Linear-Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics Theory For Coupled Heat And Mass Transport, Yaşar Demirel, Stanley I. Sandler
Yaşar Demirel Publications
Linear-nonequilibrium thermodynamics (LNET) has been used to express the entropy generation and dissipation functions representing the true forces and flows for heat and mass transport in a multicomponent fluid. These forces and flows are introduced into the phenomenological equations to formulate the coupling phenomenon between heat and mass flows. The degree of the coupling is also discussed. In the literature such coupling has been formulated incompletely and sometimes in a confusing manner. The reason for this is the lack of a proper combination of LNET theory with the phenomenological theory. The LNET theory involves identifying the conjugated flows and forces …

Design knowledge incorporates knowledge and information about designed objects and their attributes, as well as about methods and means for undertaking the design process. Such design knowledge is articulated in several different representations or languages. This paper presents a typology of the languages of engineering design, emphasizing the representation of designed objects and the articulation and representation of the cognitive processes of design. Design languages include verbal or textual statements, drawings and graphics, formulas, and numbers. Still other design languages follow from computational styles. The languages of design and their computer-based implementations are empirical in origin, since observation reveals that …

Submerged And Solid-State Phytase Fermentation By Aspergillus Niger: Effects Of Agitation And Medium Viscosity On Phytase Production, Fungal Morphology And Inoculum Performance, Maria Papagianni, Sue E. Nokes, Keith Filer
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Qualitative relationships between agitation levels and medium viscosity, Aspergillus niger morphology and phytase production were investigated in submerged and solid-state fermentations. Overall phytase production increased with increasing shaker speeds from 150 to 300 rpm, although specific growth rates and phytase production rates were higher at 150 rpm for 72 h from inoculation. Fungal morphology was greatly influenced by agitation with the morphological forms of small pellets and entangled mycelia predominating at 150 rpm, while the free filamentous form was obtained at 300 rpm. Upon inoculation of SSF, increased productivities were obtained from inocula grown at 150 rpm. A shift towards …

Fuzzycast: Media Broadcasting For Multiple Asynchronous Receivers, Marcel Waldvogel, Wei Deng, Ramaprabhu Janakiraman
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
When using an on-demand media streaming system on top of a network with Multicast support, it is sometimes more efficient to use broadcast to distribute popular content. There has been a lot of research in broadcasting on-demand content to multiple, asynchronous receivers. In this paper, we propose a family of novel, practical techniques for broadcasting on-demand media, which achieve lowest known server/network bandwidth usage and I/O efficient client buffer management, while retaining the simplicity of a frame-based single channel scheme.

Knowledge-Based Genetic Algorithm For Layer Assignment, Maolin Tang, Kamran Eshraghian, Daryoush Habibi
Research outputs pre 2011
Layer assignment is an important post-layout optimization technique in very large scale integrated circuit (VLSI) layout automation. It re-assigns wire segments in a routing solution to appropriate layers to achieve certain optimization objectives. The paper focuses on investigating the layer assignment problem with application to via minimization, which is known to be NP-complete. A knowledge based genetic algorithm for the layer assignment problem is proposed, with the aim of utilizing domain specific knowledge to speed up the process of evolution and to improve the quality of solutions. Experimental results show that this knowledge based genetic algorithm can consistently produce the …
Investigation Of Optical Interference Effects In The Generalized Eikonal Formalism, Nyok Fah Thong
Investigation Of Optical Interference Effects In The Generalized Eikonal Formalism, Nyok Fah Thong
Student Works (2000-2009)
In recent studies, the generalized eikonal equation and the equation of continuity had been shown able to describe wave phenomena, which cannot be obtained by simple geometrical optics. The time dependent generalized eikonal equation, derived from the time dependent Maxwell wave equation, is able to describe dispersion and soliton effects. This method was exten4ed to include diffraction, self-trapping and self-focusing in linear and non-linear media for stationary waves. For cases that have no analytical solution, the generalized eikonal equation and the equation of continuity are solved numerically. The solutions are in good agreement with the solutions obtained from the Fresnel-Kirchhoff …

Solubilization Of Fe(Iii) Oxide-Bound Trace Metals By A Dissimilatory Fe(Iii) Reducing Bacterium, John M. Zachara, James K. Fredrickson, Steven Smith, Paul Gassman
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Trace metals associate with Fe(III) oxides as adsorbed or coprecipitated species, and consequently, the biogeochemical cycles of iron and the trace metals are closely linked. This communication investigated the solubilization of coprecipitated Co(III) and Ni(II) from goethite (α-FeOOH) during dissimilatory bacterial iron reduction to provide insights on biogeochemical factors controlling trace-element fluxes in anoxic environments. Suspensions of homogeneously substituted Co-FeOOH (50 mmol/L as Co0.01Fe0.99OOH; 57Co-labeled) in eight different buffer/media solutions were inoculated with a facultative, metal-reducing bacteria isolated from groundwater (Shewanella putrefacians CN32), and incubated under strictly anaerobic conditions for periods up to 32 …

Numerical Simulation Of A Gas–Liquid Flow In A Fixed Bed, Ashok S. Sangani, Sangkyun Koo
Numerical Simulation Of A Gas–Liquid Flow In A Fixed Bed, Ashok S. Sangani, Sangkyun Koo
Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - All Scholarship
A countercurrent gas–liquid flow through a fixed bed of spherical particles is examined numerically by solving the particle-scale equations governing the gas and liquid flows. The liquid is assumed to flow along the surface of the particles forming a thin film. The case of small gas flow rates is examined in detail first. In this limit the presence of the liquid film increases the gas pressure drop over its value for a dry bed by three mechanisms: The liquid film makes the apparent size of the particles larger, decreases the pore space for the gas flow, and, with its velocity …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An immersion plating process using organic solutions was used to deposit a seed layer of copper and to activate the surface of thin film aluminum surfaces and bond pads. The seeded surfaces were subsequently electroless copper plated and tested for compatibility with soldering assembly. It was demonstrated that the copper particles deposited from the organic solution onto sputter deposited aluminum thin films were able to act as nucleation sites for the subsequent buildup of adherent, continuous copper films from conventional electroless plating baths. In addition, the metal deposition from organic solution process was found to be very selective on patterned …

Skin Color Detection For Face Localization In Human-Machine Communications, Douglas Chai, Son Lam Phung, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper presents the proposed user interface design for computers whereby users can navigate in a 3D graphics scene and change camera viewpoint via head movement. This human-machine communication relies very much on the performance of its face localization module, which must determine head pose and track head movement. We have employed the skin color detection approach to face localization. The approach is studied and presented. The experimental results show that our chosen methodology is very effective. Furthermore, we demonstrate that skin color detection approach can cope with the variations of skin color and lighting conditions

The characteristic markings on the cartridge and projectile of a bullet fired from a gun can be recognised as a "fingerprint" for identification of the firearm. Over thirty different features can be distinguished. The intelligent imaging of the class characteristics of ballistics specimens will provide the potential to identify the make and model of the firearm. Precise measurement of features allow ballistics metrics to be obtained for the identification of the weapon. This paper will describe progress in the development of a multidimensional cluster analysis model for forensic ballistics specimens. The cluster analysis will provide classification that is based on …
Application Of Shunting Inhibitory Artificial Neural Networks To Medical Diagnosis, Ganesh Arulampalam, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum
Application Of Shunting Inhibitory Artificial Neural Networks To Medical Diagnosis, Ganesh Arulampalam, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum
Research outputs pre 2011
Shunting inhibitory artificial neural networks (SIANNs) are biologically inspired networks in which the neurons interact among each other via a nonlinear mechanism called shunting inhibition. Since they are high-order networks, SIANNs are capable of producing complex, nonlinear decision boundaries. In this article, feedforward SIANNs are applied to several medical diagnosis problems and the results are compared with those obtained using multilayer perceptrons (MLPs). First, the structure of feedforward SIANNs is presented. Then, these networks are applied to some standard medical classification problems, namely the Pima Indians diabetes and Wisconsin breast cancer classification problems. The SIANN performance compares favourably with that …

Skin Colour Based Face Detection, Son Lam Phung, Douglas K. Chai, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper describes a new approach to face detection. A colour input image is first processed using neural networks to detect skin regions in the image. Each neural network separates skin and non-skin pixels on the basis of chrominance information. The skin-colour classifier employs the committee machine technique, which improves skin colour detection by combining the classification results of a set of multilayer perceptrons (MLPs). The skin colour classifier achieves a classification rate of 84% compared to 81% for the best individual MLP classifier. The output of the committee machine is processed by a 2D smoothing filter before being converted …

Classification Of Bandlimited Fsk4 And Fsk8 Signals, Visalakshi Ramakonar, Daryoush Habibi, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper compares two types of classifiers applied to bandlimited FSK4 and FSK8 signals. The first classifier employs the decision-theoretic approach and the second classifier is a neural network structure. Key features are extracted using a zero crossing sampler. A novel decision tree is proposed and optimum threshold values are found for the decision theoretic approach. For the neural network, the optimum structure is found to be the smallest structure to give 100% overall success rate. The performance of the both classifiers has been evaluated by simulating bandlimited FSK4 and FSK8 signals corrupted by Gaussian noise. It is shown that …

Image Compression Using A Stochastic Competitive Learning Algorithm (Scola), Abdesselam Bouzerdoum
Research outputs pre 2011
We introduce a new stochastic competitive learning algorithm (SCoLA) and apply it to vector quantization for image compression. In competitive learning, the training process involves presenting, simultaneously, an input vector to each of the competing neurons, which then compare the input vector to their own weight vectors and one of them is declared the winner based on some deterministic distortion measure. Here a stochastic criterion is used for selecting the winning neuron, whose weights are then updated to become more like the input vector. The performance of the new algorithm is compared to that of frequency-sensitive competitive learning (FSCL); it …
