Modeling Dc Power-Bus Structures With Vertical Discontinuities Using A Circuit Extraction Approach Based On A Mixed-Potential Integral Equation, Jun Fan, Hao Shi, Antonio Orlandi, James L. Knighten, James L. Drewniak
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The DC power-bus is a critical aspect in high-speed digital circuit designs. A circuit extraction approach based on a mixed-potential integral equation is presented herein to model arbitrary multilayer power-bus structures with vertical discontinuities that include decoupling capacitor interconnects. Green's functions in a stratified medium are used and the problem is formulated using a mixed-potential integral equation approach. The final matrix equation is not solved, rather, an equivalent circuit model is extracted from the first-principles formulation. Agreement between modeling and measurements is good, and the utility of the approach is demonstrated for DC power-bus design.
Scattering Of Elastic Waves In Heterogeneous Media With Local Isotropy, Joseph A. Turner, Phanidhar Anugonda
Scattering Of Elastic Waves In Heterogeneous Media With Local Isotropy, Joseph A. Turner, Phanidhar Anugonda
Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications
The scattering of elastic waves in heterogeneous media is discussed. Explicit expressions are derived for the attenuation of longitudinal and transverse elastic waves in terms of the statistics of the density and Lame´ parameter fluctuations. The derivation is based upon diagrammatic methods with the problem posed in terms of the Dyson equation. The Dyson equation is solved for the mean field response. The results are given here in a straightforward manner, in which the attenuations reduce to simple integrals on the unit circle. The medium is assumed statistically homogeneous and statistically isotropic. This model, with assumed local isotropic properties, is …

Engineers are challenged to produce better designs in less time and for less cost. Hence, to investigate novel and revolutionary design concepts, accurate, high-fidelity data must be assimilated rapidly into the design, analysis and simulation process. This data assimilation should consider diverse mathematical modeling and multi-discipline interactions necessitated by concepts exploiting advanced materials and structures. Integrated high-fidelity methods with diverse engineering applications provide the enabling technologies to assimilate these high-fidelity, multi-disciplinary data rapidly at an early stage in the design. These integrated methods must be multifunctional, collaborative and applicable to the general field of engineering science and mechanics.

Seismic Soil Structure Interaction Analyses Of An Office Building In Oakland, California, Joseph Wartman, Shahriar Vahdani, Linda Liang
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
This paper discusses soil-structure interaction (SSI) analyses for a 10-story office building with three levels of basement (10 meters) located in downtown Oakland, California. The objectives of these analyses were to assess the effects of SSI on the response of the building and to develop ground-level input earthquake motions at the base of the building for use by the project structural engineer. The SSI analyses were conducted using the two-dimensional finite element program FLUSH. The results of these analyses indicate that SSI has a negligible effect on horizontal ground motions at and near the building’s predominant period (T ~ 1.8 …

For the analysis of footings under dynamic loading scaled modeling in the centrifuge assumes that the soil behaves like at prototype scale. This paper demonstrates that for a container filled with dry sand, wave velocities can be described by a model based on the relation between the shear modulus and the depth dependent stress level proposed by Iwasaki and Tatsuoka. A preliminary estimation of the shear wave velocities and of the Poisson’s ratio confirms by dynamical measurements the currently use value of 0.25. A FEM modeling also helps to strengthen the validity of the model proposed, providing another insight in …

Non-Linear Modeling Of Dip-Slip Faults Using Applied Element Method, Pradeep Kumar Ramancharla, Kimiro Meguro
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
On observing the recent big earthquakes that have occurred in Turkey (M.7.4, 1999.8.17) and Taiwan (M.7.3, 1999.9.21), it is understood that the differential ground displacement is also responsible for the failure of structures. Now, it is understood that there is a need to channelize the research interests to study the failure propagating mechanism through the soil deposit. Numerous researchers have attempted to study this phenomenon through, experiments for understanding the effects of seismic fault mechanism and soil deposit parameters on surface deformation characteristics. However, from the widespread damage caused by the recent events, it is now clear that the earthquakes …

An Effective Local Absorbing Boundary For 3d Fem Time Domain Analyses, Lindita Kellezi, Hirokazu Takemiya
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The aim of this paper is to investigate and develop alternative methods for analyzing transient problems in dynamic soil-structure interaction, (SSI) within the FEM context. Development of a simple and efficient FEM procedure for the solution directly in the time domain of SSI problems is the main issue. Considering Direct Method of analysis, a new formulation of local transmitting boundaries for transient three-dimensional (3D) FEM analysis is presented based on the radiation criterion and strength-of- materials theory. These numerical devices can be considered as doubly asymptotic, (DA) approximations and are given in terms of first order differential operators. Different formulations …

A Project To Study Urban Earthquake Risk Worldwide, Cynthia Cardona, Rachel Davidson, Carlos Villacís
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
In 1998, the Secretariat of the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR) and GeoHazards International (GHI) launched the understanding Urban Seismic Risk around the World (UUSRAW) project. The 18-month project established an internet network of 74 seismically active cities worldwide to compare their earthquake hazard and to share their experiences and resources in working to reduce the impact of future earthquakes. In each city, a local scientist or municipal officer gathered the information necessary to conduct the comparative assessment using the Earthquake Disaster Risk Index (Davidson, 1997), a composite index used to assesses risk based on several factors. The …
Similarity Rule For Dynamic Model Tests Of Geotechnical Structures, Gao Lin
Similarity Rule For Dynamic Model Tests Of Geotechnical Structures, Gao Lin
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Soils and rocks are characterized by their highly nonlinear behaviors. This makes it very difficult to ensure similarity between model and prototype for dynamic model tests of geotechnical structures. In reality, a great number of such tests were carried out qualitatively, and valuable information was missed. Based on fairly long time practice and experience of performing dynamic model tests, we get some new ideas to establish similarity relationships between model and real earth structures. It is noticed that during strongly inelastic shaking, peak crest acceleration of earth and rock-fill dams decreases with increasing base excitation, finally at near failure stage …

Near Source Strong Ground Motion Simulation For Kocaeli Earthquake (1999), Abdullah Can Zulfikar, Hirokazu Takemiya
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
A near field strong ground motion simulation was carried out due to fault rupturing in the Kocaeli Earthquake (1999). The ground motions are simulated by the convolution scheme in time for source function and in space along rupture direction with the layered soil Green's function method based on the kinematic dislocation model. The effects of the asperities in the fault rupturing are focused considering inhomogeneous rupture mechanism in terms of a multiple asperities. The synthetic motions based on the inversion information from the observed data are compared well with the YPT (Yarimca Petrochemical Complex) record of the Kocaeli Earthquake. The …

Motion Amplification In Horizontal And Vertical Components At Liquefiable Sites, Jun Yang, Tadanobu Sato, Xiang-Song Li
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
This paper describes an analytical study with the purpose to gain some new understandings of the behavior of motion amplification in both horizontal and vertical components at liquefiable sites. By using a verified, effective-stress based nonlinear procedure, a series of numerical tests of a liquefiable sand deposit subjected to simultaneous action of horizontal and vertical shaking of various levels are carried out. To account for the characteristics of near-source motion, realistic array records of strong motion due to the Kobe earthquake of 1995 are employed to produce a variety of intensities of input motion in horizontal and vertical components. An …

Numerical And Experimental Simulation Of Seismic Site Responses, Xian Tao, Takaaki Kagawa, Akio Abe
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Prediction of seismic site responses has been one of the most important tasks in geotechnical earthquake engineering. Since Kanai used the multiple wave reflection theory to compute horizontal ground movements against seismic shaking, a number of researchers have extended the basic concept proposed by Kanai. Performance of seismic site response methods, however, has always invited open questions for problems involving extreme seismic shaking and large deformation of soils due, for example, to liquefaction and lateral spreading. A new numerical method SRANG3D (Site Response Analysis of Non-linear Ground in 3 Dimensions) has been developed to improve our prediction capabilities for seismic …

Seismic Amplification Of Typical New York City Soil Profiles, Sissy Nikolaou, Peter Edinger
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Amplification studies for New York City (NYC) soil sites are summarized herein. Ten (10) typical soil profiles from Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, are analyzed using one-dimensional SHAKE methods. Dynamic soil properties are derived using state-of-practice correlations with standard penetration resistance and compared to available in-situ geophysical measurements. Three different rock motions are utilized, each modified from real records to match 500- and 2500-year probabilistic spectra. Results are presented in terms of dimensionless ratios of response spectra (RRS) and surface response spectra. The effect of the impedance contrast between soil and rock on soil amplification is examined. It is shown that …

Modeling Uncertainty In Seismic Stability And Earthquake Induced Displacement Of Earth Slopes Under Short Term Conditions, Azm S. Al-Homoud, Wisam W. Tahtamoni
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Different models were developed for evaluating the probabilistic three-dimensional (3-D) stability analysis of earth slopes and embankments under earthquake loading using both the safety factor and the displacement criteria of slope failure. These models are formulated and incorporated within a computer program (PTDDSSA). The probabilistic models evaluate the probability of failure under seismic loading considering the different sources of uncertainties involved in the problem. A sensitivity analysis was conducted on the different parameters involved in the developed models by applying those models to a well-known landslides (Congress Street) under different levels of seismic hazard. The hypocentral distance and earthquake magnitude …

Earthquake-Induced Spalling Of Rock Slopes, Northridge Earthquake, January 17, 1994 — A Case Study, David Cummings
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The 1994 Northridge earthquake (Mw=6.7, ML=6.4), southern California produced a 100-foot thick, 3,000-foot linear zone of fractures interpreted as a spalled slab near the crest of a ridge in the Simi Hills, 7 miles northwest of the epicenter. The strike and dip of the slab parallel the strike of the ridge and the dip of the topographic slope, respectively. The fractures cut across bedding and joint planes. An analytical model based on earthquake-induced stresses is used to describe the mechanism of spalling. Earthquake-induced tensile stresses are related to (I) propagation direction of the wavefront, (2) peak particle velocity, …

Large Motion Assessment In Soils Under Dynamic Loading, E. Foerster, H. Modaressi
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
This paper presents the mathematical formulation of the nonlinear multiphase dynamic model meant for porous media, obtained by applying the finite transformation assumption. This assumption is appropriate when large motions take place either during mass wasting processes, such as large slumps and earthflows, or during earthquake events when site liquefaction occurs and results for instance in large irrecoverable settlements or lateral spreads. The weak formulation and numerical implementation of the dynamic model uses the mesh-free h-p clouds method, which is based on the more general Partition of Unity Method. The mesh-free numerical methods seem indeed to be more appropriate for …

Effects Of Dynamic Properties Of Rockfill Materials On Seismic Response Of Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dams, Xingzheng Wu, Maotian Luan, Junxia Xin
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
In this paper, the equivalent-linear method is used for three-dimensional seismic response analyses of concrete-faced rockfill dams (CFRDs). Different combinations of various parameters such as small-strain shear modulus, strain-dependent patterns of modulus and hysteretic damping, are considered to systematically investigate the effects of dynamic properties of rockfill-type coarse-grained materials on seismic dynamic response of CFRDs. It is concluded that the nonlinearity of embankment material has a significant effect on both vibration characteristics and seismic response behavior of CFRDs. Numerical results presented are instructive to gain a better understanding on earthquake-resistant behavior of CFRDs and the effects of dynamic properties of …

Using Discontinuous Deformation Analysis To Investigate The Dynamic Stability Of Tunnels In Jointed Rocks Under Earthquake Loading, Reza Naderi, Nader Hataf, Arsalan Ghahramani
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Tunneling is one of the most important problems in rock mechanics that many numerical methods try to investigate. In general, static analysis methods are mainly used to investigate the stability of tunnels, which are not safe in dynamic conditions. This paper is illustrating the use of Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) in analyzing the stability of tunnels in jointed rocks under earthquake loading. To improve the capability of original DDA method to meet the requirements for analysis of rock tunnels under dynamic loading and time dependent (time history) loading, damping and energy loss have been added to the program. Some numerical …
Seismic Response Of Normally Consolidated Cohesive Soils In Gently Inclined Submerged Slopes, Giovanna Biscontin, Juan M. Pestana, Farrokh Nadim, Knut Andersen
Seismic Response Of Normally Consolidated Cohesive Soils In Gently Inclined Submerged Slopes, Giovanna Biscontin, Juan M. Pestana, Farrokh Nadim, Knut Andersen
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The geological profile of submerged slopes on the continental shelf typically includes soft cohesive soils with layer thicknesses ranging from a few meters to tens or hundreds of meters. The response of these soils in simple shear tests is largely influenced by the presence of an initial consolidation shear stress, inducing anisotropic stress-strain-strength properties which depend also on the direction of shear. In this paper, a new simplified effective-stress-based model describing the behavior of normally to lightly overconsolidated cohesive soils is used in conjunction with a one-dimensional seismic site response analysis computer code to illustrate the importance of accounting for …
