Oil Shales In Montana, Richard N. Miller Feb 1953

Oil Shales In Montana, Richard N. Miller

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Montana has long been known to have very large resources of coal and oil, and undetermined amounts of oil shale. The reserves of coal and oil have been proven, in part, and have been produced commercially, but not much is known about the extent and apparent value of the oil shales. Under present .conditions, and according to standards set by the United States Bureau of Mines, the shales are not of commercial value. They are, however, a potentially valuable mineral resource, and portions of them will possibly be utilized, although not in the near future.

Runoff And Soil Moisture, John William Clark Jr. Jan 1953

Runoff And Soil Moisture, John William Clark Jr.

Masters Theses

"Hydrology is the science treating of water from the time it hits the earth until it leaves the earth. This never ending movement of water is called the "hydrologic cycle" and is best summarized graphically. The hydrologist is primarily concerned with rainfall, runoff and evaporation. One of the basic aims of the science is to compute the surface runoff from any rain on a given area. Surface runoff is here considered as that water which reaches the channels without penetrating the ground, plus subsurface storm flow. Subsurface storm flow is slower than surface runoff but faster than ground water flow. …

A.C. Circuit Interruption, Palmer L. Anthony Jr. Jan 1953

A.C. Circuit Interruption, Palmer L. Anthony Jr.

Masters Theses

"In the last few years the transmission voltages have increased tremendously. Along with the voltage increase came increased load carrying ability for the circuits. The first few links of a new 330 KV transmission system are now under construction in this country. Sweden is already operating a 380 KV line. It is expected to carry a load as high as 850,000 KW on a single circuit.

Interconnection between systems in adjoining areas is a practice to get further operating benefits. The benefits are - reduction of necessary reserve capacity, increased load diversity, and decreasing losses.

Both of these developments bring …

The Lattice Constant And Coefficient Of Expansion Of Chromium, Chao-Ching Weng Jan 1953

The Lattice Constant And Coefficient Of Expansion Of Chromium, Chao-Ching Weng

Masters Theses

"The most important use of chromium, other than as an alloying element in the manufacture of stainless steel, is for electroplating; to form a coating on other metals for corrosion prevention in order to procure longer life, and to achieve a decorative effect.

The physical properties of chromium are important in the effectiveness of its uses, and its lattice constant, as well as coefficient of thermal expansion, seem worthy of exact determination.

A number of research workers, over a span of thirty years, have spent considerable effort in determining the aforementioned constants. However, their results do not check, and the …

Photoelastic Investigation Of The Stresses In A Capless Connecting Rod, Gerald Delaine Smith Jan 1953

Photoelastic Investigation Of The Stresses In A Capless Connecting Rod, Gerald Delaine Smith

Masters Theses

"For a great many years the primary method used to solve engineering problems was by the use of mathematics. However, rigorous and simple mathematical solutions are only possible if the geometry of the member and its loadings are relatively simple. When irregular shapes with complex loadings are encountered, rigorous mathematical solutions for stresses induced are either impossible or very cumbersome. In such cases, the engineer must resort to other methods which are available today.

This paper attempts to show the application of the photoelastic method to such a problem. Moreover, it will show the comparative ease with which the designer …

Plastic Deformation Of Rocks, Muhammed Abdul Waheb Jan 1953

Plastic Deformation Of Rocks, Muhammed Abdul Waheb

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to search for a method by which the strength properties of a rock may be described.

For this purpose, an attempt has been made to find out some relationship by which the rooks may be classified or described. For the solution of problems of mine stability, the mechanical properties of a rock should be known, i.e., hardness, toughness and strength. It is difficult to make a study of some method of classification or description of a rock without knowledge of these properties.

With a view to achieve the solution of a general classification for …

A Survey Of Acidity In Drainage Waters And The Condition Of Highway Drainage Installations, James H. Havens Dec 1952

A Survey Of Acidity In Drainage Waters And The Condition Of Highway Drainage Installations, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

During the summer of 1949, approximately one year after installation, serious corrosion failures were discovered in a series of galvanized metal entrance culverts on U.S. 60 south of Ashland near Princess. Because of a unique disparity in their performance at this location, the problem was referred to the Research Division for possible explanation. An impromptu investigation ensued, and the cause of the failure was attributed directly to acid drainage water flowing from extensive strip-mining operations within the immediate area. A report (1)* describing the attendant conditions was made to the Research Committee in December of that year.

As an outgrowth …
