Application Of The Rotary Principle To Underground Mucking, Walter J. Smit May 1954

Application Of The Rotary Principle To Underground Mucking, Walter J. Smit

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Since the beginning of man's utilization of rocks and minerals, he has felt a need for an efficient mover of these materials. Thus, he turned from the sole use of his hands to the development of the shovel, and through the other hand tools-- the hoes, and the fork, and the rake-- he finally came to the manufacture of the heavy, more efficient, large-scale rock movers-- the muckers, and the scrapers, and duckbill loaders.

A Fundamental Study Of Clay Drying Using Ware Of Large Cross Section, Robert F. Grady Iii Jan 1954

A Fundamental Study Of Clay Drying Using Ware Of Large Cross Section, Robert F. Grady Iii

Masters Theses

"The drying of clay has been studied extensively in the past by many investigators, some of whom attempted to relate this information to the structure of clay and thereby develop a more vivid picture, while others studied the mechanism of drying in its own right in order to present a useable theory that would allow improvements in the drying operation.

At present the literature is unable to present a theory of the mechanism of drying that is sufficiently general to cover the observed aspects of clay drying. Many and varied mechanisms are presented, but correlation is seldom completely evident between …

Horizontal Pressures On Retaining Walls Due To Line Surface Loads, John B. Heagler Jan 1954

Horizontal Pressures On Retaining Walls Due To Line Surface Loads, John B. Heagler

Masters Theses

"Among the oldest types of structures with which engineers have had to deal are those which serve to laterally restrain masses of earth, or to prevent earth embankments from assuming their natural angle of repose. This is necessary where space is limited or the natural slope would encroach upon other property. These structures, usually called retaining walls, are subjected to forces, both lateral and vertical due to the pressures exerted by the backfill material and any loads imposed on the backfill material. The first step in the design of the retaining wall is to determine the magnitude, position, and line …

Evaluation Of Sprinkler Irrigation Systems In Northern Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Wayne D. Criddle Jan 1954

Evaluation Of Sprinkler Irrigation Systems In Northern Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Wayne D. Criddle

Reports

Summary and Conclusions: Sprinkler irrigation will continue to expand in Utah as well as in other irrigated areas of the world. This method of irrigation is suitable to all farm crops grown in the state and to most soils. It is particularly adapted to steep foothill areas where the water supply can be obtained at higher elevation and pumping is not necessary to develop pressure for the sprinkler systems. Also, much of the irrigated land of the state, particularly along the Wasatch front, is owned and operated by "part-time" farmers. Having the water under complete control and the irrigation schedule …

Heat Flow In A Two-Dimensional Steady-Flow System Without Radial Symmetry, George H. Parharoglu Jan 1954

Heat Flow In A Two-Dimensional Steady-Flow System Without Radial Symmetry, George H. Parharoglu

Masters Theses

"As the extent of the science of heat conduction depends on the multiplicity of the boundary conditions that can be applied to the basic differential equation, a particular case in which the use of one set boundary conditions for the development of the general equation for the temperature distribution as well as the the amount of heat flow in a steady-state, two-dimensional heat flow system with a source of heat plased at the center of or along the axis of a cylinder, and without radial symmetry has been the object of this problem. Radial symmetry means the variation of temperature …

An Investigation Of Continuous Steel Beams In The Plastic Range, Robert Adams Shoolbred Jan 1954

An Investigation Of Continuous Steel Beams In The Plastic Range, Robert Adams Shoolbred

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the action of beams in the plastic range. The test specimen will be a 4WF 13 structural shape continuous over three supports having equal span lengths of seven feet. Three types of loading were chosen. The first loading will be concentrated in the center of each span. The second loading will be a concentrated load in the center of one span only. The third loading will be the settlement of the two end supports until a plastic hinge forms at the center support, then the two spans will be loaded with concentrated …

The Design And Construction Of An Electronic D-C Analog Computer, Frederick R. Wagner, William A. Paar Jan 1954

The Design And Construction Of An Electronic D-C Analog Computer, Frederick R. Wagner, William A. Paar

Masters Theses

"To make this project realizable with the funds available and in the time allowed, and to set forth some definite goals, the following objectives were adopted:

  1. Design, construct, and place in working order a d-c electronic analog computer capable of solving 4th order linear differential equations with constant coefficients.
  2. Include in the design provisions for real time computation, and also fast, repetitive operation.
  3. Provide for later expansion of the computer installation.
  4. Limit expenditures to $700"--Introduction, page 4.

Hydrogen Overvoltage On Titanium, Sheng-Tai Shih Jan 1954

Hydrogen Overvoltage On Titanium, Sheng-Tai Shih

Doctoral Dissertations

"The hydrogen overvoltage has been defined as the difference between the potential of the working electrode (cathode) and the theoretical reversible value for the same solution. This definition brings out the difficulty involved in the measurement of the "theoretical reversible potential for the same solution” as the potential of the hydrogen electrode in such a solution is usually different from the value of a standard reversible hydrogen electrode, for which the activity of hydrogen ions is set as being “1” and the potential arbitrarily set as being “0”. Besides, it is sometimes necessary to add addition agents to the solution …

Mechanism And Measurement Of First Stage Graphitization In White Cast Iron, David S. Gould Jan 1954

Mechanism And Measurement Of First Stage Graphitization In White Cast Iron, David S. Gould

Masters Theses

"The original object of this thesis was to ascertain if coercive force measurements could be used for the determination of degree of malleablization in malleable iron. Since first stage graphitization was involved, it was only natural that an interest in the mechanism of first stage graphitization developed. The investigation which resulted from this interest was done primarily for the edification of the author, however it was subsequently deemed of enough importance to be included in this thesis. For this reason the thesis may appear at times to deviate from the original objective"--Preface, page iii.
