This is then followed by a listing of the specific Expert System "areas of interest" described in the paper.

A Theory Of Lexical Semantics, William C. Purdy Oct 1987

A Theory Of Lexical Semantics, William C. Purdy

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

The linguistic theory of Richard Montague (variously referred to as Montague Grammar or Montague Semantics) provides a comprehensive formalized account of natural language semantics. It appears to be particularly applicable to the problem of natural language understanding by computer systems. However the theory does not deal with meaning at the lexical level. With few exceptions, lexical items are treated simply as unanalyzed basic expressions. As a result, comparison of distinct lexical meanings or of semantic expressions containing these lexical meanings falls outside the theory. In this paper, I attempt to provide a compatible compatible theory of lexical semantics which may …

Compiling Unit Clauses For The Warren Abstract Machine, George D. Herbert

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the design, development, and installation of a computer program which compiles unit clauses generated in a Prolog-based environment at Argonne National Laboratories into Warren Abstract Machine (WAM) code. The program enhances the capabilities of the environment by providing rapid unification and subsumption tests for the very significant class of unit clauses. This should improve performance substantially for large programs that generate and use many unit clauses.

A Pitch Based Processor For The Analysis Of Steady State Laryngeal Modes, Tzyy-Jenq Lou

Theses

A data acquisition and analysis stem for use in the study of laryngeal dynamics has been built and tested. The special feature of the system is the computer controlled digitizing rate and coordinated subject pitch prompting. Tokens of steady state laryngeal vibration are obtained from an electroglottograph when the subject intones a series of computer prompted pitchs in a musically scalar sequence. The digital samples of this data are captured by the system at a basic rate of 200 samples per laryngeal cycle. This procedure enables the system to perform a modal analysis of laryngeal function, not unlike the analysis …

Block Encoding Of Speech Spectral Principal Components, James R. Holland Jr. Jul 1984

Block Encoding Of Speech Spectral Principal Components, James R. Holland Jr.

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A Karhunen-Loeve series expansion was used to block encode speech spectral principal components as a function of time. Each of ten principal components was first obtained as a linear combination of 2© speech spectral band energies. Using a fixed block length of 10 frames (0.128 s), the K-L basis vectors were computed separately for various speakers for each principal component. In all cases the resulting basis vectors were essentially a set of discrete cosine basis vectors. Synthesis of speech from the block encoded parameters showed that very little information is lost with up to 70% data reduction. The block encoding …

Application Of Fuzzy Theory To Pattern Recognition, David Usechak May 1983

Application Of Fuzzy Theory To Pattern Recognition, David Usechak

Dissertations

Piecewise curve approximation is used to describe boundaries of objects in pictures and waveforms. The method consists of linear and quadratic piecewise polynomial approximations in which the error must not exceed a predetermined cost threshold. A fuzzy Bayes model is used to determine if a breakpoint exists within an interval In or between intervals In and In+1 and to determine whether these intervals can be merged for data compaction reasons. In order to achieve these objectives a new fast algorithm has been proposed which gives good curve/object fitting. This algorithm uses a technique for generating generalized inverse …

The Effects Of Formal Human Leadership And Computer-Generated Decision Aids On Problem Solving Via Computer : A Controlled Experiment, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Starr Roxanne Hiltz, Kenneth Johnson, Murray Turoff

Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports

Twenty-four groups of five professionals and managers within a variety of organizations were given the task of using a computer conference to reach agreement on the best solution to a ranking problem.

The independent variable is the structure of the conferencing capability used. Two alternative means of structuring the conferences were employed, in a two-by-two factorial design. Groups with "Human Leadership" elected one of their members to lead the group in its decision making discussion. Groups with "Computer Feedback" were given periodic tables which displayed the current "group decision" in terms of the mean rankings of items, and the degree …

Fuzzy Probability And Probabilistic Processes, Abraham Kandel Jul 1978

Fuzzy Probability And Probabilistic Processes, Abraham Kandel

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In this dissertation, contributions to fuzzy probability and to differential equations with fuzzy parameters are made.

After an introductory chapter, a review of fuzzy sets and fuzzy algebra is given in Chapter 2. The main new results of the dissertation are contained in Chapter 3.

In Chapter 3, Zadeh's definition of the probability of a "fuzzy event" and "the event" and "the average value of a fuzzy function" are extended into the time domain. It is then shown that not only grades of membership, but also probabilistic processes with notions of fuzziness contained, can be defined which obey ordinary, matric, …

Programming Language Requirements For Human Communication Structures Or Computer Conferencing, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Peter Gordon Anderson Jan 1977

Programming Language Requirements For Human Communication Structures Or Computer Conferencing, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Peter Gordon Anderson

Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports

Our overall goal is to be able, simply and quickly, to construct computer conferencing systems for new requirements, applications, and even experimental ideas or fantasies. One way to view this requirement is as the creation of a highly parameterized conferencing system itself. Our view, however, is that of a programming language; i.e., an integrated notational system for the specification of communication structures and the associated actions or computation to be taken by the computer system hosting the structure.

A communication structure consists of a group of people (and storage devices) each endowed with some characteristics, and some means of person-to-person …

The Generation Of Synthetic Speech Sounds By Digital Coding, Eddy Alan Steinberger Oct 1975

The Generation Of Synthetic Speech Sounds By Digital Coding, Eddy Alan Steinberger

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The feasibility of representing human speech by serial digital codes was investigated by exercising specially constructed digital logic coupled with standard audio output equipment. The theories being tested represent a radical departure from previous efforts in the field of speech research. Therefore, this initial investigation was limited in scope to a study of unconnected English language speech sounds at the phenome level. The experiments were conducted in two parts, with the first being the development of serialized digital codes, for selected speech sounds, derived from actual human speech. The second part was to synthesize these sounds using the specially constructed …
