Accounting For Domain Context In Evaluation, Meriem Chater, David G. Novick Jan 2001

Accounting For Domain Context In Evaluation, Meriem Chater, David G. Novick

Departmental Papers (CS)

Work is situated activity. Taking into account human factors in evaluation involves considering not only users but also their contexts of use. Consequently, the evaluation of systems — from video-games to safetycritical interfaces — requires analysis of context to understand not only the effect of context on usability but also the impact of artifacts' usability on users' environments. In the case of safety-critical systems (SCS), errors (by users or designers) may threaten human lives.
To assess the degree to which interface evaluation methods currently account for context, we have used the research strategy taxonomy of McGrath as a framework for …

Automating Supply Chains, Michael N. Huhns, Larry M. Stevens Jan 2001

Automating Supply Chains, Michael N. Huhns, Larry M. Stevens

Faculty Publications

A recent study found that supply-chain problems cost companies between 9 and 20 percent of their value over a six-month period (T.J. Becker, 2000). The problems range from part shortages to poorly utilized plant capacity. When you place this in the context of the overall business-to-business (B2B) market expected to reach US$7 trillion by 2004 (37 percent of which is projected to be e-commerce sales), it is easy to see that effective supply-chain management (SCM) tools could save companies billions of dollars. Attempts to automate solutions to these problems are complicated by the need for the different companies in a …

Using A Neuro-Fuzzy-Genetic Data Mining Architecture To Determine A Marketing Strategy In A Charitable Organization's Donor Database, Korakot Hemsathapat, Cihan H. Dagli, David Lee Enke Jan 2001

Using A Neuro-Fuzzy-Genetic Data Mining Architecture To Determine A Marketing Strategy In A Charitable Organization's Donor Database, Korakot Hemsathapat, Cihan H. Dagli, David Lee Enke

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes the use of a neuro-fuzzy-genetic data mining architecture for finding hidden knowledge and modeling the data of the 1997 donation campaign of an American charitable organization. This data was used during the 1998 KDD Cup competition. In the architecture, all input variables are first preprocessed and all continuous variables are fuzzified. Principal component analysis (PCA) is then applied to reduce the dimensions of the input variables in finding combinations of variables, or factors, that describe major trends in the data. The reduced dimensions of the input variables are then used to train probabilistic neural networks (PNN) to …

Application Of Fuzzy Logic In Automated Cow Status Monitoring, R. M. De Mol, Wayne Woldt Jan 2001

Application Of Fuzzy Logic In Automated Cow Status Monitoring, R. M. De Mol, Wayne Woldt

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Sensors that measure yield, temperature, electrical conductivity of milk, and animal activity can be used for automated cow status monitoring. The occurrence of false-positive alerts, generated by a detection model, creates problems in practice. We used fuzzy logic to classify mastitis and estrus alerts; our objective was to reduce the number of false-positive alerts and not to change the level of detected cases of mastitis and estrus. Inputs for the fuzzy logic model were alerts from the detection model and additional information, such as the reproductive status. The output was a classification, true or false, of each alert. Only alerts …

Estimation Of Reference Crop Evapotranspiration Using Fuzzy State Models, Lameck O. Odhiambo, R. E. Yoder, D. C. Yoder Jan 2001

Estimation Of Reference Crop Evapotranspiration Using Fuzzy State Models, Lameck O. Odhiambo, R. E. Yoder, D. C. Yoder

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Daily evapotranspiration (ET) rates are needed for irrigation scheduling. Owing to the difficulty of obtaining accurate field measurements, ET rates are commonly estimated from weather parameters. A few empirical or semi–empirical methods have been developed for assessing daily reference crop ET, which is converted to actual crop ET using crop coefficients. The FAO Penman–Monteith method, which is now accepted as the standard method for the computation of daily reference ET, is sophisticated. It requires several input parameters, some of which have no actual measurements but are estimated from measured weather parameters. In this study, we examined the suitability of fuzzy …

Qualitative Modeling For Magnetization Curve, Pei-Hwa Huang, Yu-Shuo Chang Dec 2000

Qualitative Modeling For Magnetization Curve, Pei-Hwa Huang, Yu-Shuo Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper studies the derivation of a qualitative description for the magnetization curve of saturable magnetic materials. From a set of numerical input-output data, a fuzzy model, which is a collection of fuzzy IF-THEN rules for describing the studied system, is first constructed for the magnetization curve. A procedure consisting of a fuzzy clustering method and a rule processing algorithm is then employed for processing the constructed fuzzy modeling rules to extract the qualitative properties of the curve. The proposed approach is objective in that it can yield the system qualitative features without domain experts’ knowledge. An example is demonstrated …

Fuzzy Composite Programming To Combine Remote Sensing And Crop Models For Decision Support In Precision Crop Management, David D. Jones, E. M. Barnes

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Precision crop management is by definition a multi-objective decision-making process that must incorporate a diversity of data, opinion, preference and objective. This paper details an approach to decision making that allows users to express individual or corporate values and preferences; highlights the degree of imprecision associated with each input; highlights the degree of imprecision associated with each alternative; facilitates structuring of the decision process; reduces several levels of complex information into a single chart; allows examination of trade-off between alternatives and interests; and forces examination of inter-relationships between interest. The addition of using remote sensing data provides an efficient method …

Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward Sep 2000

Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward

Peer Reviewed Articles

Modeling the scheduling of patient appointments is an important issue in simulating a health care delivery facility. A simulation model must include the control logic of appointment scheduling software and the explicit and implicit decision rules used by the human scheduler in selecting an appointment time. Expert systems provide one way of modeling such control logic and decision rules. We describe a structure for an expert system that models patient appointment scheduling and the integration of such an expert system within a simulation model. An example expert system for a small animal veterinary clinic is presented.

Signal Modeling With Non-Uniform Time Sampling Of Features For Automatic Speech Recognition, Montri Karnjanadecha Jul 2000

Signal Modeling With Non-Uniform Time Sampling Of Features For Automatic Speech Recognition, Montri Karnjanadecha

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation presents an investigation of non-uniform time sampling methods for spectral/temporal feature extraction in speech. Frame-based features were computed based on an encoding of the global spectral shape using a Discrete Cosine Transform. In most current “standard” methods, trajectory (dynamic) features are determined from frame-based parameters using a fixed time sampling, i.e., fixed block length and fixed block spacing. In this research, new methods are proposed and investigated in which block length and/or block spacing are variable. The idea was initially tested with HMM-based isolated word recognition, and a significant performance improvement resulted when a variable block length and …

Design Of Adaptive Sliding Mode Fuzzy Control For Robot Manipulator Based On Extended Kalman Filter, Abdelrahman Aledhaibi Jul 2000

Design Of Adaptive Sliding Mode Fuzzy Control For Robot Manipulator Based On Extended Kalman Filter, Abdelrahman Aledhaibi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this work, a new adaptive motion control scheme for robust performance control of robot manipulators is presented. The proposed scheme is designed by combining the fuzzy logic control with the sliding mode control based on extended Kalman filter. Fuzzy logic controllers have been used successfully in many applications and were shown to be superior to the classical controllers for some nonlinear systems. Sliding mode control is a powerful approach for controlling nonlinear and uncertain systems. It is a robust control method and can be applied in the presence of model uncertainties and parameter disturbances, provided that the bounds of …

A New Universal Approximation Result For Fuzzy Systems, Which Reflects Cnf-Dnf Duality, Irina Perfilieva, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2000

A New Universal Approximation Result For Fuzzy Systems, Which Reflects Cnf-Dnf Duality, Irina Perfilieva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

There are two main fuzzy system methodologies for translating expert rules into a logical formula: In Mamdani's methodology, we get a DNF formula (disjunction of conjunctions), and in a methodology which uses logical implications, we get, in effect, a CNF formula (conjunction of disjunctions). For both methodologies, universal approximation results have been proven which produce, for each approximated function f(x), two different approximating relations RDNF(x,y) and RCNF(x,y). Since in fuzzy logic, there is a known relation FCNF(x)<=FDNF(x) between CNF and DNF forms of a propositional formula F, it is reasonable to expect that we would be able to prove the existence of approximations for which a similar relation RCNF(x,y)<=RDNF(x,y) holds. Such existence is proved in our paper.

Endotoxin Removal From Protein Solutions By Immobilized Metal Ion Affinity Chromatography, Yun Kang May 2000

Endotoxin Removal From Protein Solutions By Immobilized Metal Ion Affinity Chromatography, Yun Kang

Dissertations

In the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry, the removal of endotoxins from final protein product has always been a challenge. A novel method for endotoxin removal from protein solutions, immobilized metal (ion) affinity chromatography (IMAC) has been developed in this study. Fe3+ was charged to a chelating gel that contains iminodiacetic acid (IDA). The IDA- Fe3+ IMAC column was exploited to remove endotoxin from protein solutions. This method involves the adsorption of the endotoxin on IMAC column. More than 99% endotoxin is removed and protein yield is higher than 90%. IDA-Fe3+ IMAC has proved to be an economical and efficient …

Integrating Domain Knowledge With Data: From Crisp To Probabilistic And Fuzzy Knowledge, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Leonid Reznik May 2000

Integrating Domain Knowledge With Data: From Crisp To Probabilistic And Fuzzy Knowledge, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Leonid Reznik

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is well known that prior knowledge about the domain can improve (often drastically) the accuracy of the estimates of the physical quantities in comparison with the estimates which are solely based on the measurement results. In this paper, we show how a known method of integrating crisp domain knowledge with data can be (naturally) extended to the case when the domain knowledge is described in statistical or fuzzy terms.

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We show that Chu spaces, a new formalism used to describe parallelism and information flow, provide uniform explanations for different choices of fuzzy methodology, such as choices of fuzzy logical operations, of membership functions, of defuzzification, etc.

On The Assessment Of Stability And Patterning Of Speech Movements, Anne Smith, Michael T. Johnson, Clare Mcgillem, Lisa Goffman Feb 2000

On The Assessment Of Stability And Patterning Of Speech Movements, Anne Smith, Michael T. Johnson, Clare Mcgillem, Lisa Goffman

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Speech requires the control of complex movements of orofacial structures to produce dynamic variations in the vocal tract transfer function. The nature of the underlying motor control processes has traditionally been investigated by employing measures of articulatory movements, including movement amplitude, velocity, and duration, at selected points in time. An alternative approach, first used in the study of limb motion, is to examine the entire movement trajectory over time. A new approach to speech movement trajectory analysis was introduced in earlier work from this laboratory. In this method, trajectories from multiple movement sequences are time- and amplitude-normalized, and the STI …

Discrete (Granular) Logics: A New (Natural) Notion Of Continuity, With A Complete Description Of All Continuous Granular Logics, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2000

Discrete (Granular) Logics: A New (Natural) Notion Of Continuity, With A Complete Description Of All Continuous Granular Logics, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In most knowledge-based systems, the experts' uncertainty is described by a real number from the interval [0,1] (this number is called subjective probability, degree of certainty, etc.). However, experts usually use a small finite set of words to describe their degree of unecratinty; thus, to adequately describe the expert's optinion, it is desirable to use a finite (granular) logic. If all we know about the expert's opinion on two statements A and B is this expert's degrees of certainty d(A) and d(B) in these two statements, and the user asks a query "A and B?", then we need to estimate …

Complex Fuzzy Sets: Towards New Foundations, Hung T. Nguyen, Abraham Kandel, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2000

Complex Fuzzy Sets: Towards New Foundations, Hung T. Nguyen, Abraham Kandel, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Uncertainty of complex-valued physical quantities z=x+iy can be described by complex fuzzy sets. Such sets can be described by membership functions m(x,y) which map the universe of discourse (complex plane) into the interval [0,1]. The problem with this description is that it is difficult to directly translate into words from natural language. To make this translation easier, several authors have proposed to use, instead of a single membership function for describing the complex number, several membership functions which describe different real-valued characteristics of this numbers, such as its real part, its imaginary part, its absolute value, etc. The quality of …

Shadows Of Fuzzy Sets - A Natural Approach Towards Describing 2-D And Multi-D Fuzzy Uncertainty In Linguistic Terms, Hung T. Nguyen, Berlin Wu, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2000

Shadows Of Fuzzy Sets - A Natural Approach Towards Describing 2-D And Multi-D Fuzzy Uncertainty In Linguistic Terms, Hung T. Nguyen, Berlin Wu, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Fuzzy information processing systems start with expert knowledge which is usually formulated in terms of words from natural language. This knowledge is then usually reformulated in computer-friendly terms of membership functions, and the system transform these input membership functions into the membership functions which describe the result of fuzzy data processing. It is then desirable to translate this fuzzy information back from the computer-friendly membership functions language to the human-friendly natural language. In general, this is difficult even in a 1-D case, when we are interested in a single quantity y; however, the fuzzy research community has accumulated some expertise …

Bottom-Up Design Of Artificial Neural Network For Single-Lead Electrocardiogram Beat And Rhythm Classification, Srikanth Thiagarajan Jan 2000

Bottom-Up Design Of Artificial Neural Network For Single-Lead Electrocardiogram Beat And Rhythm Classification, Srikanth Thiagarajan

Doctoral Dissertations

Performance improvement in computerized Electrocardiogram (ECG) classification is vital to improve reliability in this life-saving technology. The non-linearly overlapping nature of the ECG classification task prevents the statistical and the syntactic procedures from reaching the maximum performance. A new approach, a neural network-based classification scheme, has been implemented in clinical ECG problems with much success. The focus, however, has been on narrow clinical problem domains and the implementations lacked engineering precision. An optimal utilization of frequency information was missing. This dissertation attempts to improve the accuracy of neural network-based single-lead (lead-II) ECG beat and rhythm classification. A bottom-up approach defined …

The Emergence Of Language Among Autonomous Agents, Piotr Gmytrasiewicz, Michael N. Huhns Jan 2000

The Emergence Of Language Among Autonomous Agents, Piotr Gmytrasiewicz, Michael N. Huhns

Faculty Publications

Suppose some autonomous shopbot agents had been representing us by dealing with a vendor's pricebot, and suppose they didn't share an agent communication language (ACL). What should they know at a fundamental level, what could each point to, and how could they establish a common language? Recent research at the University of Texas at Arlington has shown that agents first establish a common vocabulary, progress to a primitive language similar to human pidgin, then enrich the language's grammar to develop a creole, and eventually arrive at a full-blown ACL. During this process, the vocabulary and grammatical structures most important to …

The Impact Of The Simulated Digital Data Radio Communication Induced Interference On Voice Radio Communication, Daniela T. Kratchounova Oct 1999

The Impact Of The Simulated Digital Data Radio Communication Induced Interference On Voice Radio Communication, Daniela T. Kratchounova

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The transition of air/ground communications, from its present analog structure to a new digital communications architecture, will span a 10-year time frame. Testing to date indicates that the potential for interference from the digital system to the analog system would be critical, especially for General Aviation (GA) aircraft. This type of interference can be described as short, random bursts of noise capable of completely obliterating parts of the voice communication. The subsequent degrading effects on voice radio communications could jeopardize flight safety. The masking of parts of important information would result in distracted attention, debilitated cognitive performance, high level of …

On-Line Free Form Surface Measurement Via A Fuzzy-Logic Controlled Scanning Probe, Ming Chang, Paul P. Lin Apr 1999

On-Line Free Form Surface Measurement Via A Fuzzy-Logic Controlled Scanning Probe, Ming Chang, Paul P. Lin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a system and methodology for on-line free form surface measurement via a scanning contact probe installed on a CNC (computer numerical control) machine. The scanning probe provides more sampling points than any traditional touch trigger type of probes used on CNC machines, and better measuring accuracy than laser displacement sensing or structured lighting. The presented measuring system's main advantage is that the number of measured points can vary with the change of surface curvature. To improve the measuring stability and continuity, fuzzy logic control, in lieu of traditional PID control, is employed. As a result, the …
