Self-Heating Of Wood Fiber, Kenneth Norman Smith
Self-Heating Of Wood Fiber, Kenneth Norman Smith
Theses
An investigation was made to determine what portion of wood is responsible for the self-heating of wood fiber, where self-heating is defined as the increase in temperature of a material above the temperature of its surroundings due to an exothermic reaction occurring within the material. The phenomenon of self-heating of wood fiberboard has long been known, but very little has been done to discover the particular part of the wood which generates the heat.
Wood fiberboard was tested for self-heating by placing a. cubical sample in a specially constructed furnace and heating it to a uniform temperature of 325?F. As …

Aryl Sulfonation In Presence Of Phosphrous Trichloride, William Calvert Tanner
Theses
With sulfuric acid as the sulfonating agent, phosphorus trichloride is demonstrated as being effective in facilitating the sulfonation of some aromatic compounds. Optimum conditions are a molar ratio of 0.5 mole of sulfuric acid: 1.0 mole of aromatic compound with 4 - 5% more phosphorus trichloride than is required to react with the available water in the system, and reaction temperatures between 50°C. and 60°C.
The aromatic compounds studied were benzene, chlorobenzene, bromobenzene, and nitrobenzene.
The Vacuum Desulphurization Of Copper Mattes, Robert L. Trevison
The Vacuum Desulphurization Of Copper Mattes, Robert L. Trevison
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The first application of vacuum techniques to the metallurgical industry was made in the early part of this century by Rohn, a German, who developed vacuum technology to a production status in the specialty metals business. Although extensive use of vacuum processing technology was made in the lamp and electrical industries, the methods used were considered to be impractical up to about ten years ago even though remarkable improvements were made during World War II. Wartime demands for magnesium and for uranium which necessitated the use of a high vacuum in their production led to the perfection of mechanical pumps, …
Shaft Mucking Investigation Part 2, Jorge R. Delzo
Shaft Mucking Investigation Part 2, Jorge R. Delzo
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
By use of several digging principles, such devices as scrapers, clamshells, power shovel loaders, etc., have been perfected. The net results have been an almost complete elimination of hand mucking, an increase of loading speed, and a reduction of sinking costs. Moreover, the elimination of hand mucking has had a favorable psychological effect on the crew, as well as saving physical effort for the other phases of the shaft-sinking cycle.

An Investigation Into Salt-Bath Heat Treatment For Titanium, Robert Fred Bechtold
An Investigation Into Salt-Bath Heat Treatment For Titanium, Robert Fred Bechtold
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Titanium, although possessing excellent corrosion resistance in some media, is severely attacked by molten inorganic salts such as those employed in heat-treating baths. Since titanium undergoes allotropic changes, many of its alloys are amendable to heat treatment. The purpose of this study was to discover a salt (or other suitable medium) in which titanium alloys can be successfully heat treated without fear of corrosion.
Temperature Forecasting At Logan, Utah, For The Snowmelt-Runoff Season, Clifton Johnson
Temperature Forecasting At Logan, Utah, For The Snowmelt-Runoff Season, Clifton Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the practicability of forecasting temperatures for the spring and summer snowmelt-runoff season. A successful temperature forecast for Logan, Utah, would be useful in studies of Logan River streamflow, as well as other related applications.
Logan, Utah, is situated in a region where the snow accumulates during the winter and early spring at high altitudes and remains until the proper sequence of meteorological events provides the thermodynamic conditions essential for melting. Snow surveys provide an index to the water available on a watershed. Temperature conditions during the melt period largely determine the available …

Shaft Mucking Investigation Part 1, Jorge R. Delzo
Shaft Mucking Investigation Part 1, Jorge R. Delzo
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
This paper represents an attempt to explain the operation of inclined-shaft mucking, and the machines developed for this purpose. It also covers some research done for the design of a continuous shaft mucking device, which could in the future prove to be the answer to this important problem. In many small or intermediate mining operations, where this problem has been a prime headache, the added costs of shaft mucking, because of lack of speed, and versatility, might very well mean the difference between profit and collapse.
Creep Characteristics Of Thin Prestressed Concrete Slabs, Wayne F. Alch
Creep Characteristics Of Thin Prestressed Concrete Slabs, Wayne F. Alch
Masters Theses
"Prestressed concrete as a structural material is finding wider usage in the United States today. Until recently, economic factors have precluded the use of prestressed concrete in this country, while Europe became the leader in discovering new uses and applications in construction for the material. As new methods are developed in this country, more engineers and contractors are discovering that prestressed concrete is, in many ways, far superior to plain or reinforced concrete. In line with this awakening the Missouri Highway Department is carrying on research to determine the feasibility of prestressed concrete for highway slabs. This study is a …

The Correlation Of Kelly Ball Penetration Readings With Standard Slump Cone Readings For Concrete Made From Missouri Aggregates, James Claude Rives
The Correlation Of Kelly Ball Penetration Readings With Standard Slump Cone Readings For Concrete Made From Missouri Aggregates, James Claude Rives
Masters Theses
"The ASTM standard slump test as set forth in ASTM Designation: C143-52, has been used for many years in concrete construction tor measuring the consistency of plastic concrete. Slump tests taken in the laboratory are considered reasonably accurate; however, there are numerous disadvantages in performing these tests in the field; the most serious being the time required to make a test on pavement work. The standard slump cone method is also subject to personal differences in sampling, rigidity and smoothness of base, dampening the apparatus, filling the cone, rodding, raising the cone, freedom from jarring and selection of point to …
Separation Of Iron-Tin Alloys Using Gas-Solid Reactions, Carl Richard Bieling
Separation Of Iron-Tin Alloys Using Gas-Solid Reactions, Carl Richard Bieling
Masters Theses
"For years it has been a problem to the tin smelting, plating, and detinning industries to be able to separate iron from tin once they were associated together as described above. Due to the lack of a tin smelter in the United States in the past, and the abundance of tin scrap available, which had little value either for the iron content or the tin content in their untreated state, most interest was concentrated on seeking methods of separating this tin scrap into its two useful components, iron and tin, rather than deal with the problems of smelting tin from …
A Study Of The Variation Of The Fluoride Content Of Certain Waters In The Vicinity Of Albuquerque, E. Metz Beahm
A Study Of The Variation Of The Fluoride Content Of Certain Waters In The Vicinity Of Albuquerque, E. Metz Beahm
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
In the first part of 1935, the City of Albuquerque was investigating the possibility of obtaining an additional water supply from the Jemez Mountains, which are about fifty miles to the north of the City. Black and Veatch, consulting engineers for the City, were asked to make a complete study of the problem. The question of fluorides in the water came up because it was known that the fluorides would cause mottled enamel in human teeth when the water was used during childhood, if the content was above 0.9 parts per million by accepted fluorine analysis methods. The question arose …
Filter Materials For Emergency Use In Diatomite Type Water Filters, Robert Wassell Mcleane
Filter Materials For Emergency Use In Diatomite Type Water Filters, Robert Wassell Mcleane
Masters Theses
"A completely different type of filter, using diatomaceous earth as the filter media, had been in use for many years for filtration of industrial liquids, however, the use of diatomaceous earth for water filtration purposes had been discouraged due to the rapid clogging of the filter material. "As late as 1930 it was reported that the very excellence of filtration with diatomite prevented its extensive use in water filtration except where complete elimination of bacteria and suspended matter is essential.”
Diatomaceous earth, however, seemed to exhibit the general properties the research groups were seeking; in the refined state it exhibited …
Analysis Of Pavement Riding Quality: A Triaxial Evaluation Of Pavement Roughness, William S. Foy
Analysis Of Pavement Riding Quality: A Triaxial Evaluation Of Pavement Roughness, William S. Foy
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
For the last twenty-five years considerable research has been directed toward developing reliable equipment for evaluating pavement roughness. Since roughness inhibits passenger riding comfort and safety, as well as inducing vehicle deterioration, the determination of the features that cause roughness would indicate possible improvements in pavement design, materials, construction practices and equipment. For example, certain types of base design might be found to produce smoother surfaces than others; and a construction practice such as a blade-spread leveling course might result in more uniform pavements. Then too, evaluation of pavement roughness would permit relative comparison of pavements as one of several …
Liquid-Gas Flow In Venturi Meter And Sharp Edged Orifice, Frank John Chwalek
Liquid-Gas Flow In Venturi Meter And Sharp Edged Orifice, Frank John Chwalek
Theses
The results of a study of pressure drops across a 5/32 inch throat venturi meter and a 5/32 inch thin plate sharp-edged orifice for the horizontal cocurrent, flow of the air-water two-phase two-fluid system in a 3/4 inch pipe under essentially isothermal conditions, are presented. This is the first critical study of two phase flow in a Venturi meter and. in a 5/32" orifice.
Flows of water of 0.1 to 1.7 gallons per minute with air rates in range of 0.00022 lbs/sec. to 0.0092 lbs/sec. of air mixed in were studied. All flows were turbulent when judged with the conventional …
Hydrolysis Of Sodium Silicofluoride, Frank Arthur Graf
Hydrolysis Of Sodium Silicofluoride, Frank Arthur Graf
Theses
The kinetics of an apparent solubility decrease of commercial sodium fluoride encountered in a piece of equipment designed to produce saturated sodium fluoride solution was Investigated, in order to understand why a consistently saturated solution was not possible to achieve with plain tap water as solvent.
The main impurity, about 1 percent sodium silicofluoride, coats the sodium fluoride crystals, resulting in an equilibrium shift during dissolution of the salt in water; and under certain conditions results in the formation of a protective gel. Therefore, in order to produce a constant strength sodium fluoride solution, this coated impurity must be decomposed …

Theses
This is a study of the three phase system - n-Hexane Aniline - Water at 50° Centigrade. The data obtained, coupled with data previously established at 36° Centigrade is used to predict a means of recovering aniline from 3-5% aqueous solutions by scrubbing with n-hexane.
Ammonia Catalized Phenol Formaldehyde Resins, Murlin Charles Ehrgott
Ammonia Catalized Phenol Formaldehyde Resins, Murlin Charles Ehrgott
Theses
The literature on ammonia-catalyzed phenol-formaldehyde resins is reviewed and critical comparisons are made of the manner in which the ammonia-catalyzed resins differ from both the alkali- and acid-catalyzed resins.
Intermediate products formea during the initial stapes of the ammonia-catalyzed phenol-formaldehyde reactions, as reported in the literature, are tabulated and % N contents are calculated.
Experimental determinations of N content of resins with molar ratios of 1:1.25 phenol to formaldehyde with ammonia at 0.2, 0.5, and 1.0 moles per mole of phenol, show that at the 0.2 molar ratio of ammonia, all the N enters into the resin and remains during …
