Abandoned Automobiles :A Case History Of Land Pollution, Robert William Arden Jan 1970

Abandoned Automobiles :A Case History Of Land Pollution, Robert William Arden

Masters Theses

"A study has been made of the abandoned automobile problem as it now exists throughout the United States with particular emphasis on the problem in the Saint Louis area. The primary goal of this study was to determine those factors which most influence the collection and disposal of derelict vehicles. The problem was examined in the following major areas: (1) The history of the problem in the Saint Louis area and the various attempts made to correct it, (2) the various businesses directly involved with the disposal of junk automobiles, namely, the auto wreckers and the scrap processors, and (3) …

The Closed Cycle-External Combustion Engine And Air Pollution, Galen Lee Pearson Jan 1970

The Closed Cycle-External Combustion Engine And Air Pollution, Galen Lee Pearson

Masters Theses

"The impact of the internal combustion engine on the air pollution problem in this country was presented and alternative propulsion systems for the land transportation vehicle were investigated. The potential characteristics of the more promising closed cycle-external combustion engine concepts were established and discussed. The closed thermodynamic power cycles analyzed include the Rankine, Stirling, and Feher supercritical cycles. Thermodynamic property data on eighteen candidate working fluids for the Rankine and Feher supercritical power cycles have been assembled and were presented in a utilizable form. The thermal efficiency (ratio of the net work out to the heat input) and the many …

Oxygen Uptake By The Benthal Sludge Of A Waste Stabilization Pond, Edward Landon Niedringhaus Jan 1970

Oxygen Uptake By The Benthal Sludge Of A Waste Stabilization Pond, Edward Landon Niedringhaus

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes the laboratory evaluation of the benthal sludge oxygen uptake of a 6.7 acre waste stabilization pond which has served a city of 2,400 population for a period of seven years. Special emphasis is directed toward the explanation of laboratory techniques developed for this study to measure the oxygen uptake rate. The effects on oxygen consumption of temperature, nature of sludge, initial oxygen tension, and sludge consolidation are discussed. Benthal sludge samples were taken from three locations in the pond. Oxygen consumption studies were conducted in a specially designed plastic cylinder which included a novel magnetic mixing system. …

Recovery Of Trace Organic Pollutants By Solvent Extraction And Freeze Concentration, William Chih-Wen Chang Jan 1970

Recovery Of Trace Organic Pollutants By Solvent Extraction And Freeze Concentration, William Chih-Wen Chang

Masters Theses

"The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the use of batch type solvent extraction and freeze concentration in recovering trace organic pollutants from water. The work was performed using a simplified water system containing known concentrations of phenol, and natural water systems collected from three sources (Meramec Spring, Gasconade River near Jerome, and Missouri River in Jefferson City) with different levels of pollution. The simplified water system was used to evaluate the effect of the number of extractions, solvent to sample ratio, extraction time, initial organic concentration, pH, and turbidity on solvent extraction; and the effect of volumetric concentration …

A Study Of The Effects Of Added Solid-Liquid Interfacial Area On The Stabilization Characteristics Of Simulated Wastewater Stabilization Lagoons, Gary Lee Gaines Jan 1970

A Study Of The Effects Of Added Solid-Liquid Interfacial Area On The Stabilization Characteristics Of Simulated Wastewater Stabilization Lagoons, Gary Lee Gaines

Masters Theses

"Wastewater stabilization lagoons have recently become a popular and efficient method of sewage stabilization in many parts of the country. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of added solid-liquid interfacial area on the treatment capabilities of simulated wastewater stabilization lagoons. The simulated lagoons consisted of six -15 gallon aquariums which were operated in the laboratory. The solid-liquid interfacial area was increased in four of these lagoons by suspending plastic panels in the aquariums. The lagoons were operated for a period of approximately two and a half months using dehydrated milk as a simulated waste substrate. During …

A Study On The Feasibility Of Using Pipelines For The Collection And Transportation Of Urban Solid Wastes, William Leo Sago Jr. Jan 1970

A Study On The Feasibility Of Using Pipelines For The Collection And Transportation Of Urban Solid Wastes, William Leo Sago Jr.

Masters Theses

"This study was conducted to determine the technological feasibility of using a tube transport (pipeline) system to supplement and partially eliminate the present inadequate solid waste collecting and transporting techniques employed in most cities throughout the United States. Specific objectives were to develop a practical pipeline system for the transport of refuse by means of a fluid and to determine the uniformity of composition of refuse. The hydrodynamic characteristics of each transport medium, water and Chemical Emulsion., W-4088, were to be determined also. Another item of interest was the degree of grinding necessary to transport refuse by pipeline. An experimental …

Mining Environmental Conference

FORWARD: Environmental problems in our complex industrial society have, in the past decade, assumed immense proportions. A population growth which will double the number of persons in the United States and in the total world in the next thirty years makes it imperative that greater care and consideration be given to the effects of industrialization on all our lives.

All industry is fair game for the advocate that suggest that there should be no change in what nature has given us. If these persons were to be followed, there would be no industrialization, no improvement in living conditions, working hours, …

Criteria For Planning A Mobile Home Park Development In Rural Areas, Richard Euguene Sharp Jan 1969

Criteria For Planning A Mobile Home Park Development In Rural Areas, Richard Euguene Sharp

Masters Theses

"The object of this study was to determine the possibility of developing a mobile home park as a partial solution to the problem of inadequate housing in rural communities. The investigation involved the study of modern mobile homes and mobile home parks, mobile home dwellers, and the social and economic aspects of mobile home living. It was suggested that a properly designed and managed mobile home park can provide a satisfactory location for the placement of mobile homes. The small down payment and low monthly payments associated with purchasing a mobile home, along with the inherent mobility of mobile home …

Sorption And Desorption Of Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Pesticides By Clay Minerals, Cheng Sun Liao Jan 1969

Sorption And Desorption Of Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Pesticides By Clay Minerals, Cheng Sun Liao

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes the sorption and desorption of chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides by clay minerals under laboratory controlled environmental systems. Particular emphasis was directed toward the investigation of the fundamental adsorption phenomena which occurred in selected pesticide-clay systems. the effects of certain environmental stresses, including pH, temperature and salt (NaCl) concentration of water, on the behavior of sorption and desorption were also studied. Pesticides selected for this study included DDT, dieldrin and heptachlor, and clay minerals employed were kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite. The adsorption rate and equilibrium were evaluated by batch techniques employing completely mixed systems while the effects of the …
