The Conservation Of Human Resources In Energy Systems, Burns E. Hegler, James D. Hoag Oct 1975

The Conservation Of Human Resources In Energy Systems, Burns E. Hegler, James D. Hoag

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The operation of an energy system often requires that its personnel engage in manual and technical activities that involve exposure to health and safety hazards. A typical electric utility is used as a model for studying the operation of safety and health programs for energy systems. Specific criteria regarding standards and management are presented and discussed. These criteria are general enough so that they may be applied in the management of future energy systems.

Water As A Factor In Energy Resources Development, A. Bruce Bishop, Melvin D. Chambers, William O. Mace, David W. Mills Jun 1975

Water As A Factor In Energy Resources Development, A. Bruce Bishop, Melvin D. Chambers, William O. Mace, David W. Mills

Reports

Water, in many cases, is a key factor in the development of energy resources in the western states. The total water supply available in the arid west is fixed; yet potential water uses in the region are growing continually. In fact, in many areas quantities of water desired to be put to beneficial use has already surpassed the limit of local supplies as indicated by filings for water rights. The availability of water, in adequate quantities and of suitable quality, is one of the essentials to the economic viability of some economic sectors in the states in the Colorado River …

Water Quality As An Approach To Managing Recreational Use And Development On A Mountain Watershed: South Fork Of The Ogden River-Ogden Valley Area, Bruce A. Johnson, E. Joe Middlebrooks Jun 1975

Water Quality As An Approach To Managing Recreational Use And Development On A Mountain Watershed: South Fork Of The Ogden River-Ogden Valley Area, Bruce A. Johnson, E. Joe Middlebrooks

Reports

The South Fork of the Ogden River, one of several heavily used mountain watersheds along Utah's Wasatch Front, was studied between February 1 and November 1, 1974, to determine the effects of recreation on water quality.

Although the greatest impacts on water quality occurred during spring runoff, it was found that recreational use had a definite effect on water quality. Bacteriological parameters were found to be the most sensitive indicators of contamination.

Differences between heavy weekend and light weekday recreational use were reflected by differences in bacteriological counts. Also, it appears that changes in bacterial water quality were more closely …

Soluble Surfactant Effects On Gas Absorption Of Organic Compounds, Angelo C. Morresi May 1975

Soluble Surfactant Effects On Gas Absorption Of Organic Compounds, Angelo C. Morresi

Theses

A literature search dating back to the beginning of this century turned up no previous work similar to ours. We discuss several methods and experiments involving the scrubbing of air streams.

The objective of this work was the determination of surfactant affects on the solubility of certain organic compounds of varying solubility in water. A means of simulating a packed tower was devised to allow for bench scale evaluation and thus enabled a greater number of organic compounds to be examined with a greater variety of surfactants.

Curves were plotted based on organic vapor concentration, surfactant concentration, organic type, surfactant …

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Pedestrian accident data in Kentucky were analyzed for 1972 and 1973 on a rural, urban, and statewide basis. Results showed that about 1500 pedestrian accidents occur in Kentucky each year and cost over $11 million. About 30 percent of pedestrian accidents in rural areas and 4 percent in urban areas are fatal. Although about 78 percent of Kentucky's pedestrian accidents occur in urban areas, over 62 percent of the pedestrian fatalities occur in rural areas.

Specific characteristics of pedestrian accidents were identified and related to human, environmental, and time factors. Highway and street improvements and safety programs generally considered to …

Creating The Electric Energy Economy, L. G. Hauser Jan 1975

Creating The Electric Energy Economy, L. G. Hauser

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

My remarks will be directed to four points:

First, that energy is the life blood of our economy, and that its use or conservation is far from a simple matter of personal habits of waste or frugality. In other words, the vital role energy plays in the production of goods and services should be distinguished from its use in their consumption.

Second, that our excessive dependence on our two scarcest energy resources -- oil and natural gas -- is the core of the energy problem, both U.S. and worldwide.

Third, that limiting our time horizon to this winter, next summer, …

Energy, Environment And Incremental Decision Making, Jeff V. Conopask, Robert R. Reynolds Jr. Jan 1975

Energy, Environment And Incremental Decision Making, Jeff V. Conopask, Robert R. Reynolds Jr.

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

During the late 1960's and early 70's a variety of environmental/energy oriented legislation was enacted by the Congress. The most important of these acts, the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA), required that environmental impact statements be filed when various private and public activities have a potential for impacting man and his environment. (17) Impact statement requirements go beyond the currently practiced cost/benefit analysis, which is often just a production (direct) impact assessment. Heretofore, indirect or second round economic and social effects of consequence affecting other national goals were seldom counted.

How Might Synthetic Fuels From Coal Affect Natural Resources And Environment?, H. J. Plass Jr. Jan 1975

How Might Synthetic Fuels From Coal Affect Natural Resources And Environment?, H. J. Plass Jr.

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Energy self-sufficiency for the U. S. requires substantially increased use of coal. Direct combustion of coal without adequate environmental controls, as would occur if coal were used as a fuel for homes and offices throughout the country, would result in severe air pollution problems„ Synthetic fuels from coal such as methane, low BTU gas, or hydrogen, when utilized by the homes and businesses as gas or as electricity from gas, will contribute a much smaller amount of air pollution. However, to make these synthetic fuels available, it is necessary to mine more coal than would have to be mined for …

Nitrogen Transformation In Secondary Wastewater Treatment Plants, Mark Lee Morris Jan 1975

Nitrogen Transformation In Secondary Wastewater Treatment Plants, Mark Lee Morris

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant and animal life; however, its presence in concentrations exceeding assimilative capacities of receiving water bodies is undesirable. Therefore, the form and concentration of total nitrogen released in wastewater effluents is of great concern. During the course of this study, the nitrogen analysis was performed on the various unit processes of the Florida Technological University wastewater treatment plant. The average percent removal of nitrogen between plant influent and clarifier effluent was 30.5% during the month of August 1975. It is believed that the nitrogen removal is attributed to luxury uptake by the biomass through …

Pond Water Quality In A Claypan Soil, Elbert C. Dickey, J. K. Mitchell Jan 1975

Pond Water Quality In A Claypan Soil, Elbert C. Dickey, J. K. Mitchell

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

In many areas of the Midwestern United States, a safe and plentiful supply of groundwater is a primary concern. Groundwater is sporadic, unreliable, shallow, and often polluted, even though these same areas often have an annual rainfall in excess of 1 m.

The pollution problems associated with these groundwater supplies are both chemical and bacterial. Older wells are often the most dangerous. Linings made of open brick near the surface, cracked casings and covers, and nearby privy, septic tank, and barnyard sites accentuate the problems in shallow groundwater aquifers. High levels of nitrates frequently present in the shallow domestic well …

A Field Technique Measuring Virus Decay And Potential Aerosol Hazard From Wastewater Sprinkler Irrigation, Michael F. Torpy, Robert A. Gearheart, J. Clifton Spendlove, Rex S. Spendlove Jan 1975

A Field Technique Measuring Virus Decay And Potential Aerosol Hazard From Wastewater Sprinkler Irrigation, Michael F. Torpy, Robert A. Gearheart, J. Clifton Spendlove, Rex S. Spendlove

Reports

The increased use of domestic wastewater for irrigation purposes has stimulated a growing practice of sprinkler irrigating from oxidation ponds and other domestic wastewaters. Aerosols generated from these sprinkler irrigation systems may contain potentially hazardous pathogens. Subsequently, the aerosols can contain infective viruses which can be carried through the air to surrounding populations. Thus, a public health hazard can be created by sprinkler irrigating domestic wastewater. This study is an investigation of a means by which the virus decay rate of viruses in aerosols and the potentials hazard of sprinkler irrigation aerosol clouds may be examined. A means of injection …

Reports

Sixteen sediment-water microcosms designed to allow complete gas, liquid, and solid mass balances of gases, nutrients, and mercury were studies under dark conditions or varying light intensity for a period of 189 days. Results indicated that the microcosm technique is a very sensitive method of analyzing microbial dynamics in sediment water systems. Gas quantity and composition changes were easy to monitor and were especially sensitive to light and nutrient variations. Nitrogen fixation occurred in all lighted systems (blue-green algae nitrogen fixers, Anabaena, and others) and was adequate to insure that no nitrogen limitation occurred even though nitrogen limitation was imposed …

Impacts Of Energy Development On Utah Water Resources, Barry C. Saunders Jan 1975

Impacts Of Energy Development On Utah Water Resources, Barry C. Saunders

Reports

Introduction: Choosing a theme for a conference especially one for a group of diverse disciplines such as the American Water Resources Association encompasses, is always a challenge. you find yourself torn between thigns you'd really like to talk and hear about, and topics you think will draw attendance. It was most fortunate when somebody came up with the idea of Water for Energy, becasue to my way of thinking, it met both of these ends. There is no denying that starting in late 1973, energy has been the catchword, and the energy crisis has been the bandwagon to leap upon. …

A Strategic Planning Model For Implementing Community Development Block Grant Programs., John M. Lang Jan 1975

A Strategic Planning Model For Implementing Community Development Block Grant Programs., John M. Lang

Masters Theses

"As problems of metropolitan areas have multiplied, the federal government has been drawn into an ever-increasing intimate funding association with city governments. Although federal funding for ii urban problems may have been considered a panacea by some, most local government agencies have now discovered that their problem has shifted in emphasis from where to find funds to that of meeting federal standards and requirements of application in order to get the funds.

The impact of federal programs on local government management is evident in the recently enacted federal Housing and Community Development Act of 1974. Title I of the act …

Image Detection In Signal Dependent Noise., Robert D. Laramore Jan 1975

Image Detection In Signal Dependent Noise., Robert D. Laramore

Masters Theses

"This thesis deals with the detection of two-dimensional signals in the presence of noise, including signal dependent noise. The object to be detected and the background are assumed known a priori. A decision rule based on a likelihood ratio test is obtained and the associated probabilities of detection and false alarm are evaluated. This is done first in general terms, where neither the form of sampling nor the model used for noise is specified. Then results are obtained for three examples: Poisson noise, signal dependent Gaussian noise, and binomial noise. Finally, the degradation resulting from a point spread function is …

The Availability And Development Of An Automated Accounting System For Small Businesses., Margy Rice Beckmeyer Jan 1975

The Availability And Development Of An Automated Accounting System For Small Businesses., Margy Rice Beckmeyer

Masters Theses

"A good accounting system is a very essential part of the successful operation of a small business but is often lacking. Therefore, the objective of this research is to furnish a general automated accounting system suitable for use by the small business firm.

To determine the feasibility, a statistical survey was made to evaluate the availability of automated accounting systems now available to small business. The results of the survey suggest that computer systems are presently available to small business firms at economical prices, but to minimize cost the small firm may need to supply its own accounting program.

Disposal Of Lead And Zinc Cationic Wastes On Soils., Stephen Melvin Linnemann Jan 1975

Disposal Of Lead And Zinc Cationic Wastes On Soils., Stephen Melvin Linnemann

Masters Theses

"The sorption and desorption of lead and zinc on soil samples from the "New Lead Belt" of southeastern Missouri and from Springfield, Missouri, were investigated using both column and batch systems. These cations were selected for study because of the possible effects which soil pollution in the "New Lead Belt" mining region could have on shallow aquifers and because both metals are utilized in the electroplating industry.

It was found that soil has the ability to sorb lead and zinc; however, the cation-exchange capacity (C.E.C.) of the soils studied was not fully satisfied, though there was evidence that i f …
