Irradiation-Hyperthermia In Canine Hemangiopericytomas: Large-Animal Model For Therapeutic Response, Ralph C. Richardson, Virgil L. Anderson, William D. Voorhees, William E. Blevins, Tammy K. Inskeep, Wolfgang Janas, Robert E. Shupe, Charles F. Babbs Nov 1984

Irradiation-Hyperthermia In Canine Hemangiopericytomas: Large-Animal Model For Therapeutic Response, Ralph C. Richardson, Virgil L. Anderson, William D. Voorhees, William E. Blevins, Tammy K. Inskeep, Wolfgang Janas, Robert E. Shupe, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Results of irradiation-hyperthermia treatment in 11 dogs with naturally occurring hemangiopericytomas are reported. Similarities of canine and human hemangiopericytomas are described. Orthovoltage X-irradiation followed by microwaveinduced hyperthermia resulted in a 91% objective response rate. A statistical procedure was given to evaluate quantitatively the clinical behavior of locally invasive, nonmetastatic tumors in dogs that were undergoing therapy for control of local disease. The procedure used a small sample size and demonstrated distribution of the data on a scaled response as well as transformation of the data through classical parametric and nonparametric statistical methods. These statistical methods set confidence limits on the …

Management Concept For Consumer Services Via Microprocessor Systems, Thomas William Bradshaw Sep 1984

Management Concept For Consumer Services Via Microprocessor Systems, Thomas William Bradshaw

Theses

With the proliferation of home computers and the subsequent ability to communicate with retail establishments, an opportunity exists for alternative delivery of goods and products to residential consumers. This paper explores the establishment, management, and problems associated with these burgeoning enterprizes.

Presently, there are several technologies and market strategies under devlopment which stress the convenience of making purchases. In addition to home computers there are other communication networks using different protocols such as videotext which consists of several arrangements of text and graphical protocols. In addition there are several mediums like cable and videotext by which product information can be …

Contaminant Transport Against A Slowly Moving Fluid : An Experimental Investigation, Surya Man Shakya Sep 1984

Contaminant Transport Against A Slowly Moving Fluid : An Experimental Investigation, Surya Man Shakya

Theses

Leachate migration into groundwater from leaking lagoons, hazardous waste sites, solid waste disposal sites, etc. has recently become a major cause of groundwater pollution. A possible solution to prevent leachate migration into groundwater is to create a negative hydraulic gradient toward the site. This can be achieved by installing two parallel slurry trench cut-offs around the perimeter of a leaking lagoon and by filling it with water. The water und-er the influence of positive hydraulic gradient will move toward the site and will finally find its way on the surface of the lagoon. Along with the flow of water, the …

Design Of A Photoreactor For The Oxidation Of Toxic Pollutants In Water By Ozone And Ultraviolet Radiation, Andrew Youngrak Park Sep 1984

Design Of A Photoreactor For The Oxidation Of Toxic Pollutants In Water By Ozone And Ultraviolet Radiation, Andrew Youngrak Park

Theses

A photoreactor has been set up to study the feasibility of ozone and ultraviolet radiation for treating pollutants in water. Phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, and 2,6-dichlorophenol were chosen as pollutants in this study.

The reaction kinetics mechanism has been postulated to be consisted of ozone decomposition, oxygen activation by UV, and reaction of pollutant with ozone, UV, and activated species. The corresponding reaction rate constants were found, using Rosenbrock optimization program, from four different experiment sets --- reaction of pollutant with ozone; reaction of pollutant with UV; reaction of pollutant with O2/UV; reaction of pollutant with O3/O2 …

Microbial Characteristics Of An Activated Sludge And Three Commercial Preparations After Exposure To Phenolics, Laurie Gneiding Sep 1984

Microbial Characteristics Of An Activated Sludge And Three Commercial Preparations After Exposure To Phenolics, Laurie Gneiding

Theses

The biological characteristics of four microbial mixtures were examined after successive exposure to phenol and 2-chlorophenol at room temperature. One of the microbial mixtures was an activated sludge from the Livingston, NJ municipal wastewater treatment plant. The other three mixtures were commercial preparations sold by Polybac Corp.(Hydrobac), Sybron Corp. (BI-CHEM DC 1006/1007), and General Environmental Sciences(LLMO).

The characteristics examined were relative counts and species of gram negative/gram positive bacteria, yeast and fungi, protozoa, and higher organisms. For the gram negative bacteria and yeasts, culturing techniques and diagnostic tubes were used to determine the predominant species. Biochemical tests were done on …

Evaluations were performed for the following programs: 1) Lexington-Fayette County, including only Urban Police enforcement; 2) McCracken County, including Kentucky State Police, Sheriff's Office and Paducah Police enforcement; and 3) Warren County, including both Kentucky State Police and Bowling Green Police enforcement. Duration of enforcement and level of enforcement varied among the programs.

Four types of data were collected as a means of evaluating Traffic Alcohol Programs at the locations selected for study; accident data, arrest and adjudication data, cost-effectiveness data, and …

Planning For The On-Orbit Servicing Of Military Spacecraft, Michael E. Russell, Robert M. Tayloe Sep 1984

Planning For The On-Orbit Servicing Of Military Spacecraft, Michael E. Russell, Robert M. Tayloe

Theses and Dissertations

On-orbit spacecraft servicing for military programs is examined. The military community appears to be somewhat reticent to embrace or, in some cases, to even consider on-orbit servicing. The civilian community appears enthusiastic about the potential of on-orbit servicing and the majority of economic studies of civilian missions show servicing strategies to be an attractive alternative to most expendable spacecraft strategies. A model called SATSERV is presented. This model can be used to conduct economic comparisons from an overall standpoint between expendable and servicing strategies. The model is implemented in a microcomputer spreadsheet format for rapid implementation and application along with …

Low Technology Recycling And Rdf System At The U.S. Facility, Subic Bay, Philippines, Samuel A. Vigil, Donald E. Brunner

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The U.S. Facility Subic Bay is located about 50 miles east of Manila, on the East China Sea. The Facility consists of seven major Naval installations. The Facility is essentially a large commercial/industrial complex. The Public Works Center (PWC) Subic Bay is the public works agency responsible for the collection and disposal of the solid waste produced by the facility. A portion of the solid waste is manually sorted and recycled. Although the present manual sorting and recycling system is effective, PWC Subic Bay feels that it can be improved. Therefore , the Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory (NCEL) was requested …

Block Encoding Of Speech Spectral Principal Components, James R. Holland Jr. Jul 1984

Block Encoding Of Speech Spectral Principal Components, James R. Holland Jr.

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A Karhunen-Loeve series expansion was used to block encode speech spectral principal components as a function of time. Each of ten principal components was first obtained as a linear combination of 2© speech spectral band energies. Using a fixed block length of 10 frames (0.128 s), the K-L basis vectors were computed separately for various speakers for each principal component. In all cases the resulting basis vectors were essentially a set of discrete cosine basis vectors. Synthesis of speech from the block encoded parameters showed that very little information is lost with up to 70% data reduction. The block encoding …
