Accidents Types Des Monteurs De Lignes Du Secteur De La Construction, Évelyne Kedl, Lucie Laflamme, Lyne Marinacci
Nos …

Water Quality Management Studies For Water Resources Development In The Bear River Basin, Darwin L. Sorensen, Craig Caupp, William J. Grenney, Steve Eberl, Jay J. Messer, Phillip Ludvigsen, Charles W. Ariss
Reports
Summary: The quality of water that develops in the proposed reservoirs of the Upper Bear River Storage Project will determine the possible uses of the water. Previous studies of water quality in the Bear River and its tributaries have reported water quality problems relating to nitrate ion, sanitary indicator bacteria, suspended solids, and phosphorus concentrations. Most point sources of water pollution inthe basin have been eliminated or improved in quality, but nonpoint sources of pollution continue to degrade the quality of the Bear River. Concentrations of phosphours have been sufficiently high to encourage dense algal growth and create eutrophic conditions …

Water Quality Management In Utah Mountain Watersheds, Keith R. Kimball, E. Joe Middlebrooks
Reports
What Quality Management in Utah Mountain Streams: Several years of thorough monitoring of water quality parameters in Little Cottonwood Creek in Salt Lake County, Utah, measured the natural levels of the major water constituents, spotted significant (largely nonpoint) pollution sources, identified the pollutants deserving primary attention, and suggested the approaches to land and water management for pollution control in a mountain watershed used primarily for recreation purposes. Bacterial pollution is greater at night than during the day, on weekends than on week days, and in the summer than in the winter. Mineral content is of natural origin and largely explained …

Expected Effects Of In-Lake Dikes On Water Levels And Quality In The Farmington Bay And The East Shore Areas Of The Great Salt Lake, Utah (Executive Summary), Duane G. Chadwick, J. Paul Riley, Alberta J. Seierstad, Darwin L. Sorensen, Norman E. Stauffer
Reports
Introduction: The Great Salt Lake is a terminal lake and as such is one of the major inland bodies of salt water in the world, and the largest lake of brine in the western hemisphere. Its unique features, including its mineral rich waters and interesting shores and islands, make it appealing to both industry and vacationers. Until recently, some of the great waterfowl sanctuaries in the U.S. existed along the easterly and northerly shores of the lake. However, during the past three years record breaking inflow volumes and lower than normal evaporation rates have caused an unprecidented rate of rise …

Quinoline Sorption To Subsurface Materials: Role Of Ph And Retention Of The Organic Cation, John M. Zachara, Calvin Alnsworth, Larry Felice, Charles Resch
United States Department of Energy: Publications
The sorption of quinoline (pKa = 4.94) was investigated on low-organic-carbon subsurface materials that varied in pH. Sorption isotherms were measured from 10-7 to 10-4 M quinoline and were found to be nonlinear. The resulting Freundlich constants (KF), based on total aqueous quinoline concentration, were poorly correlated with subsoil properties, including organic carbon. Higher sorption in the acidic subsoils and favorable coefficents for regression of KF, normalized to cation-exchange capacity vs. the ionization fraction (Q), point to the importance of ion exchange of the protonated compound. When the subsoil pH …

Distribution Of Lead And Zinc In Groundwater Around An Exfiltration Pipe Including A Study Of Specific Conductance, Donna M. Schiffer
Distribution Of Lead And Zinc In Groundwater Around An Exfiltration Pipe Including A Study Of Specific Conductance, Donna M. Schiffer
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Highway runoff is a significant source of nonpoint pollution to surfoce and ground waters. Underground disposal of stormwater has several advantages, such as recharge of ground water resources and reduction of flow rates at existing storm sewer outfa11s. However, there are few studies on the effects of underground disposal of stormwater on the qua1ity of ground water. The purpose of this stucty was to examine the changes 1n lead, zinc, and specific conductance in highway runoff that is routed to an underground disposal facility as the water passes through the unsaturated soil to the surficia1 aquifer. An exfiltration pipe in …
Selection Of Remedial Engineering Techniques For Dioxin-Contaminated Soil Sites ; Based On Site Geological Characteristics, Jeffrey John Lux
Selection Of Remedial Engineering Techniques For Dioxin-Contaminated Soil Sites ; Based On Site Geological Characteristics, Jeffrey John Lux
Masters Theses
"Specific geologic, hydrologic, and topographic characteristics influence the selection of technologies employed in the remediation of sites affected by dioxin-contaminated soil. These characteristics are significant in the selection of equipment and methods for excavation and materials processing.
The only currently sociologically acceptable method of treatment of dioxin-contaminated soils is incineration. As more is learned concerning the nature of dioxin sorption to soil particles and the mobility of dioxin in the environment, long-term storage in underground mines, and land burial appear to offer strong potential alternatives. Strong public sentiment against non-destructive remedial options would have to be overcome. There are also …

Effect Of Deferoxamine On Late Deaths Following Cpr In Rats, Charles F. Babbs, Sushil D. Kompala, Karl E. Blaho
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
The iron chelating agent deferoxamine was studied in an animal model as post-resuscitation therapy to prevent late deaths and brain damage following total circulatory arrest and resuscitation. Cardio-respiratory arrest was induced by injection of cold, 1% KC1 into the left ventricles of ketamine anesthetized rats pretreated with succinylcholine chloride, and by discontinuation of positive pressure ventilation. CPR was begun after six minutes, and animals with return of spontaneous circulation were entered into the study. Within five minutes after return of spontaneous circulation, treated animals received deferoxamine (50 mg/kg, IV). At ten days, 16 of 25 (64%) of treated animals had …
Abdominal Binding And Counterpulsation In Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Charles F. Babbs, William E. Blevins
Abdominal Binding And Counterpulsation In Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Charles F. Babbs, William E. Blevins
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
The history and potential of abdominal pressure as an adjunct to standard cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is reviewed. Abdominal pressure during CPR may be either static or phasic. Static abdominal pressure redirects limited blood flow generated by chest compressions toward the heart and brain, and away from the abdominal organs and lower extremities, thus boosting coronary perfusion pressure. Phasic abdominal pressure applied whenever chest pressure is released, in counterpoint to the rhythm of chest compression—so called interposed abdominal compression (IAC)-CPR—generates blood flow by an independent abdominal pump mechanism that augments the systemic perfusion created by chest compressions. New imaging data are …

Determination Of Trace Quantities Of Selenium And Arsenic In Canned Tuna Fish Using Electroanalytical Techniques, Ann Marie Higham
Theses
Toxic metals are present in the environment and are known to be present in food. Selenium, which is considered an essential micronutrient, is recognized as a toxic metal at slightly higher concentrations. Arsenic is also recognized as a toxic metal. Selenium and Arsenic tend to accumulate in food, specifically fish and seafood.
Fifteen brands and types of tuna fish were analyzed for selenium using differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetry. The cans with the high and low concentrations of selenium were analyzed for arsenic using differential pulse polarography. Three samples with three percent recoveries and a blank were analyzed for each …

An Investigation To Improve Linear Predictive Vocoder Pulse/Noise Excitation Models, Elizabeth Annella Martina Effer
An Investigation To Improve Linear Predictive Vocoder Pulse/Noise Excitation Models, Elizabeth Annella Martina Effer
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The quality of synthetic speech from Linear Predictive (LP) vocoders is known to be degraded due to the lack of detail in the commonly used pulse/noise excitation model. In this investigation, it was hypothesized that this degradation is due to the lack of precise timing information in the pulses and to the constraint that each short-time segment of excitation be either an impulse train or white noise. Accordingly, more complex excitation models were implemented using precise timing from peaks in the residual and a mixture of pulses and noise. Since the LP residual is known to be the perfect excitation …
Air Force Problems With Birds In Hangars, Timothy J. Will
Air Force Problems With Birds In Hangars, Timothy J. Will
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 2nd (1985)
The Air Force's Bird-Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) Team has been dealing with bird hazards to aircraft for over ten years, primarily through awareness programs, direct assistance to military bases, and through R&D aimed at world-wide BASH reduction. As with any problem where a biological system (in this case, birds) is involved, diversification is important in developing solutions. The BASH Team has recommended a variety of methods for working with hazards from birds. One area of particular concern is the nuisance of pest birds in hangars. These structures are extremely alluring to birds, which seek the roof-supporting I-beams and bars for …
