Steady-State Operation Of Bench-Scale Activated Sludge Process Using Phenol And 2-Chlorophenol As Substrates, Jeffrey Richard Caputi Jan 1987

Steady-State Operation Of Bench-Scale Activated Sludge Process Using Phenol And 2-Chlorophenol As Substrates, Jeffrey Richard Caputi

Theses

Experiments were conducted to determine whether a continuous process similar to the common activated sludge process could be operated at a relative steady state with phenol and 2-chlorophenol as the sole carbon sources. After a number of unsuccessful trials, process conditions were developed which allowed for operation at a relative steady state with respect to the concentration of microorganisms in the reactor and the concentration of phenol and 2-chlorophenol in the effluent.

Phenol and 2-chlorophenol were removed at better than 99 percent efficiency on a continuous basis. The mixed liquor grown under the conditions of the experiment was highly filamentous …

Another Aspect Of Duty Cycling: Effects On Indoor Humidity. 01/18-21/87. 10 P., Florida Solar Energy Center, Mukesh Khattar

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The effects of two readily available air-conditioner control strategies on dehumidification performance are discussed: fan "auto," in which the indoor air circulation fan cycles on and off along with the compressor, and fan "on," in which the fan operates continuously regardless of the on or off status of the compressor. Measured performance data are presented on two air-conditioning systems - a packaged terminal direct expansion, constant volume air conditioner without capacity modulation and a unitary direct expansion air conditioner with dual-speed compressor and indoor air fan motors. Measurements of the condensate removal from the air conditioner as well as its …

Quinoline Sorption On Na-Montmorillonite: Contributions Of The Protonated And Neutral Species, Calvin C. Ainsworth, John M. Zachara, Ron L. Schmidt Jan 1987

Quinoline Sorption On Na-Montmorillonite: Contributions Of The Protonated And Neutral Species, Calvin C. Ainsworth, John M. Zachara, Ron L. Schmidt

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Dilute aqueous solutions of quinoline were contacted with Na-montmorillonite to elucidate the sorption process of the neutral and protonated species. Sorption occurs via a combination of ion exchange and molecular adsorption and yields S-type isotherms. Exchange between the quinolinium ion (QH+ and Na can be described by means of Vanselow selectivity coefficients and a thermodynamic exchange constant (Kex). Due to the apparent adsorption of the neutral species at high mole fractions (x) of the solid phase, the thermodynamic standard state was defined as 0.5 mole fraction. The selectivity at pH ~4.95 of the QH+ species over …

Sorption Of Binary Mixtures Of Aromatic Nitrogen Heterocyclic Compounds On Subsurface Materials, John M. Zachara, Calvin C. Ainsworth, Christina E. Cowan, Berta L. Thomas Jan 1987

Sorption Of Binary Mixtures Of Aromatic Nitrogen Heterocyclic Compounds On Subsurface Materials, John M. Zachara, Calvin C. Ainsworth, Christina E. Cowan, Berta L. Thomas

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Single and binary solute sorption of pyridine, quinoline, and acridine has been investigated on two low organic carbon subsurface materials with similar properties but different equilibrium pH when saturated with water. Single solute sorption for all compounds is higher in the acidic soil as compared to the basic soil, reflecting stronger sorption of the protonated organic cations. The protonated species exhibit high selectivity for the exchange complex at low aqueous concentration with selectivity increasing with ring number. Binary sorption experiments with quinoline/pyridine and quinoline/acridine demonstrate that competitive sorption occurs between compounds in the acidic subsoil where the protonated compound species …

Bioconcentration Of Heavy Metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, And Zn) In The Missouri River Near Sioux City, Iowa, Robert Conklin, Suzie Galles, Edward Shane, Rod Tondreau Jan 1987

Bioconcentration Of Heavy Metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, And Zn) In The Missouri River Near Sioux City, Iowa, Robert Conklin, Suzie Galles, Edward Shane, Rod Tondreau

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The concentrations of the heavy metals- copper, chromium, lead, zinc- in the biota of the Missouri River were measured at a control site upstream of Sioux City and at a site downstream of the city. Bioconcentration factors for each of the metals were calculated for fish, periphyton, and invertebrates, and the concentrations of metals in the river sediments were measured.

Concentrations of the same metals were measured in the sediment, water, periphyton, invertebrates, zooplankton, and fish of Snyder's Bend Lake. Bioconcentration factors were calculated for each of the biological communities and were found to be very similar to those found …

Seepage Interceptor Drains And Topsoil Salinity, T R. Negus

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The Department of Agriculture established 121 trials in its Narrogin advisory district starting in 1972 to measure the effect of bulldozer and grader built seepage interceptor banks and drains on the topsoil salinity of the land downslope of them.

After 14 years of moniterin, there was no evidence that seepage interceptor drains and banks reduced the top soil salinity on 10 of the 11 sites in the Pingelly, Brookton and Wickepin Shires.

Influence Of Bromide Upon Trihalomethane Formation And Speciation, Thomas J. Christ Jan 1987

Influence Of Bromide Upon Trihalomethane Formation And Speciation, Thomas J. Christ

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated the influence of bromide-ion concentrations upon trihalomethane (THM) formation and speciation. There is some speculation that bromide will increase the amount of THMs on a mass and/or molar basis. Previous research had indicated that bromide will affect the speciation to form the more brominated forms of THMs, but the extent of this speciation has not been clearly defined. Speciation is important when evaluating THM removal processes. The brominated species may require activated carbon for removal as opposed to air stripping for removal of the volatile species (chloroform).

To investigate the role of bromide ion, a half-fractional, factorial …

Human Factors Compatibility Concerns In The Selection Of Display Technologies For Computer And Data Terminals, Francis C. Westerfield Jan 1987

Human Factors Compatibility Concerns In The Selection Of Display Technologies For Computer And Data Terminals, Francis C. Westerfield

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Human factors considerations are often overlooked in the selection of electronic computer displays. When cost is used as the only determining factor, the resulting product may not be commercially successful because of an inadequate display.

To help avoid this situation, designers and users should be aware of the various factors involved in proper display selection. These factors were developed by a synthesis of existing scientific and industrial literature on the subject and are explained in this paper.

The first factor is a basic knowledge of the structure, characteristics, and function of the human visual system. The theory of sight, anatomy …

Engineering Treatment Of Hazardous Wastewaters Utilizing Dye-Sensitized Photooxidation, Betty-Ann Naeger, R. Ryan Dupont, William M. Moore Jan 1987

Engineering Treatment Of Hazardous Wastewaters Utilizing Dye-Sensitized Photooxidation, Betty-Ann Naeger, R. Ryan Dupont, William M. Moore

Reports

Studies were conducted to determine the applicability of photooxidation for the degradation of selected hazardous and refractory organic compounds. These photochemical oxidation reactions occur through the transfer of energy from electronically excited sensitizer molecules which attain excited states by absorbing visible light energy. Optimum conditions for photooxidation were established based on sensitizer concentration and reaction pH for four polynuclear aromatic pollutants. The rate of photooxidation was found to be independent of the initial substrate concentration for methylene blue-sensitized reactions, and dependent on substrate concentration for solutions without a sensitizing dye. Photolysis of substrate mixtures established acridine and anthracene as photochemically …

Chromate Adsorption On Amorphous Iron Oxyhydroxide In The Presence Of Major Groundwater Ions, John M. Zachara, Donald Girvln, Ronald Schmidt, C. Thomas Resch Jan 1987

Chromate Adsorption On Amorphous Iron Oxyhydroxide In The Presence Of Major Groundwater Ions, John M. Zachara, Donald Girvln, Ronald Schmidt, C. Thomas Resch

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Chromate adsorption on amorphous iron oxyhydroxide was investigated in dilute iron suspensions as a single solute and in solutions of increasing complexity containing CO2 (g), SO42-(aq), H4Si04(aq), and cations [K+, Mg2+, Ca2+(aq)]. In paired-solute systems (e.g., CrO42- =H2CO3*), anionic cosolutes markedly reduce CrO42- adsorption through a combination of competitive and electrostatic effects, but cations exert no appreciable influence. Additionally, H4Si04 exhibits a strong time-dependent effect: CrO42- adsorption is greatly decreased with increasing H4SiO4 …

Improving Crystallographic Macromolecular Images: The Real-Space Approach, A. D. Podjarny, T. N. Bhat, Martin Zwick Jan 1987

Improving Crystallographic Macromolecular Images: The Real-Space Approach, A. D. Podjarny, T. N. Bhat, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Macromolecular crystallographicy is a unique tool for imaging the structures of proteins and nucleic acids. Images are obtained from the Fourier transform of the diffraction pattern of the crystal by use of X-ray, neutron, and / or electron scattering. When X-ray and neutron scattering are used only diffraction amplitudes are experimentally measured, and phases have to be obtained. Multiple isomorphous replacement (MIR) has been the technique of choice for solving this phase problem in the determination of most macromolecular structures. Unfortunately, the method is extremely time consuming, especially when compared with the solution techniques available for small molecules; moreover, structure …

Site Characterization Of Riverfront Park, Kansas City, Missouri, For The Purpose Of Hazardous Waste Site Remediation, Helen Hudson Scannell Jan 1987

Site Characterization Of Riverfront Park, Kansas City, Missouri, For The Purpose Of Hazardous Waste Site Remediation, Helen Hudson Scannell

Masters Theses

"Riverfront Park, Kansas City, Missouri is located on a point bar along the Missouri River. Portions of the site have historically been used (1950 - 1973) as a municipal landfill receiving residential, commercial and industrial wastes. Relatively high concentrations of elemental lead have been found in small areas of the surface soil within the limits of the Park. Chemicals that may be present in the landfill wastes create a potential for groundwater contamination. A Remedial Investigation, including a series of groundwater monitoring wells is necessary to characterize groundwater geochemistry and flood-induced changes in groundwater flow direction, and to assess any …

Colorimetric Assay For Methanesulfinic Acid In Biological Samples, Charles F. Babbs, Melissa J. Gale Jan 1987

Colorimetric Assay For Methanesulfinic Acid In Biological Samples, Charles F. Babbs, Melissa J. Gale

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

We describe a simple colorimetric method to measure 30 to 300 M concentrations of sulfinic acids in biologic samples. The procedure employs the coupling reaction of an aromatic diazonium salt (Ar-N=N+) with the sulfinic acids (RSOOH) to produce a colored diazosulfone derivative (Ar-N=N-SOOR), which can be selectively extracted into an organic solvent. Linearity and noninterference by liver homogenate, phenols, amines, and thousand-fold or greater excesses of sulfate, thiol, and dimethyl sulfoxide are demonstrated. Sensitivity of the method is about 10 nmol per sample. Because methanesulfinic acid is the principal product of the action of hydroxyl radicals upon dimethyl sulfoxide, and …

A Mathematical Model For The Fate Of Hazardous Substances In Soil: Model Description And Experimental Results, W. Greeney, C. Caupp, Ronald C. Sims Jan 1987

A Mathematical Model For The Fate Of Hazardous Substances In Soil: Model Description And Experimental Results, W. Greeney, C. Caupp, Ronald C. Sims

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

A mathematical model (VIP) was developed and implemented for evaluating the fate of a hazardous substance in the unsaturated zone of the soil. The model simulates vadose zone processes including volatilization, degradation, adsorption/desorption, advection, and dispersion. Four physical phases in the vadose zone are considered including water, oil, soil grains, and soil-pore air (unsaturated pore space). The Vadose Zone Interactive Processes (VIP) model is appropriate for sites under RCRA and CERCLA (Superfund) categorization since site-specific soil-waste processes affecting transport of hazardous chemicals through the vadose zone are incorporated in the model. A RCRA land treatment system was chosen as the …

Health risk assessment of individual environmental chemicals, risks of drinking water supplies, methods for evaluating toxicity, and structure-activity relationships and response-surface methodology represent the focus for 1986. A report of the Steering Committee on Identification of Toxic and Potentially Toxic Chemicals for Consideration by the National Toxicology Pro gram found that, for the majority of substances they examined, data essential for human health hazard assessment were lacking.1 Milestone publications concerning human health effects aspects include works by Mortelmans et al,2 Busch et al,3 Hartman et al,4 Rein,5 Gentile,6 Hodgson,7 and Tagashira and Omura. …

The Effect Of Temperature On Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Persistence In An Unacclimated Agricultural Soil, M. P. Coover, Ronald C. Sims Jan 1987

The Effect Of Temperature On Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Persistence In An Unacclimated Agricultural Soil, M. P. Coover, Ronald C. Sims

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the effect of temperature on the persistence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) incubated in an unacclimated agricultural sandy loam soil. Soil microcosms were spiked with 16 priority pollutant PAHs and placed in incubation chambers at 10, 20, and 30°C. Triplicate sets of microcosms at each temperature were periodically removed from incubation over the 240 day study period and solvent extracted. Concentrations of PAHs in the soil were determined by HPLC analysis of the extracts. Substantial loss of three-ring compounds was observed at all temperatures whereas there was very little apparent loss of five …
