Kinetic Study Of Decomposition Of Azo Dyes And Phenol In Advanced Oxidation Processes Reaction Mechanisms, Pathways And Intermediates, Hung-Yee Shu
Dissertations
Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) are an emerging technology for treatment of various hazardous organics in wastewater and groundwater. However, the kinetics and mechanisms for AOP have not been well understood. A mechanism including light intensity was studied for the decomposition of azo dyes and phenol in an AOP reactor with a 5,000 watt low pressure mercury lamp. UV light absorption is an important parameter. The effect of pH, hydrogen peroxide dosage, and dye concentration on the decomposition of azo dyes in an H2O2/UV reactor were also studied. Reaction pathways and intermediates of phenol oxidation by different …

The Effects Of Airline Deregulation On Airline Safety: An Econometric Analysis, William Charles De Jager
The Effects Of Airline Deregulation On Airline Safety: An Econometric Analysis, William Charles De Jager
Dissertations and Theses
After an unfortunate series of accidents in the mid 1930's the Air Transport Association (ATA) lobbied Congress for regulation of the industry. The ATA claimed that unfair competition was endangering the public safety. The Civil Aeronautics Act of 1938 created the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) and gave the CAB the authority to regulate the industry.
During the regulation era airline ridership increased and safety improved. During the regulation period, opportunity for comparing the safety record of the regulated industry with the record of the unregulated portions of the industry was limited. The few attempts made rendered inconclusive results.
During a …

Recognition Of Quadric Surfaces From Range Data: An Analytical Approach, Ivan X. D. D'Cunha
Recognition Of Quadric Surfaces From Range Data: An Analytical Approach, Ivan X. D. D'Cunha
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation, a new technique based on analytic geometry for the recognition and description of three-dimensional quadric surfaces from range images is presented. Beginning with the explicit representation of quadrics, a set of ten coefficients are determined for various three-dimensional surfaces. For each quadric surface, a unique set of two-dimensional curves which serve as a feature set is obtained from the various angles at which the object is intersected with a plane. Based on a discriminant method, each of the curves is classified as a parabola, circle, ellipse, hyperbola, or a line. Each quadric surface is shown to be …
Competitive Enzyme Immunoassay By Polyclonal Antibodies Against Organophosphorus Pesticides, Kuo-Lan Wen
Competitive Enzyme Immunoassay By Polyclonal Antibodies Against Organophosphorus Pesticides, Kuo-Lan Wen
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Organophosphorus compounds (OPs) comprise one of the major classes of pesticides in use today because they are highly effective and less toxic. Because of their extensive use, there is a need for monitoring OPs in water and vegetables. Gas chromatography (GC) is the usual method for OPs screening, but it is time-consuming and has the high cost of instrumentation. The goal of this project was to find an easy method which was sensitive and had less instrumentation required to test OPs.
Microwells and microtubes were utilized as the solid-phase immobilization for the development of an enzyme immunoassay for OPs. A …
Robot Force Velocity Control Using Expert System For Control Mode Changes, William R. Doggett
Robot Force Velocity Control Using Expert System For Control Mode Changes, William R. Doggett
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The most important property of an automated mechanical system is reliable execution of a specified task. Automated mechanical systems work best in precisely structured environments where all operations are repeatable. Typically, these systems are difficult to modify and expensive to install. Sensors can be used to detect disturbances, thus reducing hardware cost by offsetting the need for precise rigid construction components. Sensors, however, increase the complexity and cost of the control software. Efficient methods of reacting to sensor information during automated system operation are required to reduce software complexity and expense.
This thesis analyzes a robotic construction task and describes …

Fiber Optic Sensor For The Simultaneous Detection Of Strain And Temperature, Barry G. Grossman, Walid Emil Costandi
Fiber Optic Sensor For The Simultaneous Detection Of Strain And Temperature, Barry G. Grossman, Walid Emil Costandi
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
For simple interferometric fiberoptic sensors, the effects of strain and temperature are indistinguishable. This paper addresses that problem by demonstrating a single wavelength, two-mode polarimetric fiberoptic sensor capable of simultaneously measuring temperature and strain. The sensor consists of two interferometers, a polarimetric and a two-mode, formed in a single elliptical core fiber. The interferometers respond with different sensitivities to strain and temperature like simultaneous functions of the two variables. A technique is developed by which the outputs of the interferometers are used simultaneously to measure strain and temperature with rms errors less than 30 με and 1°C. Finally, measurement results …

An Analysis Of The Ability Of Commercial Wargames To Fulfill The Education Requirements Of The Air Force Wargaming Center, Scott Goehring
Theses and Dissertations
It has been the contention of some that current commercial wargames could possibly fulfill the education requirements addressed by the Air Force Wargaming Center. The Wargaming Center, lacking the opportunity to conduct a thorough, in-house analysis of these commercial wargames, requested an independent evaluation be performed. This thesis identifies potential commercial wargames and provides an analysis of those wargames to determine their ability to educate senior military officers in the application of aerospace power. In addition, this thesis establishes a set of Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs) against which future wargames can be easily evaluated. The MOEs were developed from the …

Afitbunki: A Modified Iterative Code To Unfold Neutron Spectra From Bonner Sphere Detector Data, Sean C. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
The neutron spectrum unfolding code BUNKI, developed at the Naval Research Laboratory in 1983, was modified to incorporate a finer energy group structure, seven initial-guess spectra, and new dose conversion factors. The modified code, AFITBUNKI, unfolds spectra into 54 energy groups between 10-7 and 14.92 MeV. The code calculates fluence, absorbed dose, percent of effective dose equivalent, and percent of ambient dose equivalent as a function of neutron energy. Additionally, AFITBUNKI calculates total energy-integrated fluence (Φ), absorbed dose (D), dose equivalent (H), effective quality factor (Q), ambient dose (D*), both ICRP Publication 26- and ICRP Publication 60-based ambient dose …
Automating The Satellite Range Scheduling Process, Timothy D. Gooley
Automating The Satellite Range Scheduling Process, Timothy D. Gooley
Theses and Dissertations
Satellite range scheduling is a complex problem that involves scheduling satellite supports in which a satellite and a specific remote tracking station are assigned a time window during which they communicate with each other. As the number and complexity of satellite supports continue to increase, more pressure is placed on the current manual system to efficiently generate a schedule. The objective of this research was to develop a methodology that will automate the generation of the initial 24 hour schedule. The goal of the algorithm developed was to schedule as many conflict free supports as possible. A two phased approach …

The Use Of Simulation To Evaluate Strategic Aeromedical Evacuation Policy And Planning, Charles W. Wolfe Jr.
The Use Of Simulation To Evaluate Strategic Aeromedical Evacuation Policy And Planning, Charles W. Wolfe Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Strategic aeromedical evacuation (AE) of casualties from the theater of operations to the CONUS during wartime is a complex operation that involves the integration of medical personnel and policies with airlift concepts and capabilities. Military analysts within the Air Mobility Command Analysis Group (AMC/XPY) have traditionally used deterministic linear programming techniques to estimate the number of aircraft the United States Air Force (USAF) requires for given contingency scenarios. However, this group has yet to develop a stochastic approach to validate their resource recommendations, and more importantly, to study the interrelationships between key factors comprising strategic aeromedical evacuation. As the possibility …

Why American Engineers Aren't Unionized - A Comparative Perspective, Peter F. Meiksins, Chris Smith
Why American Engineers Aren't Unionized - A Comparative Perspective, Peter F. Meiksins, Chris Smith
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
This article presents a comparative perspective on why U.S. engineers are not unionized. The decline of organized labor in the U.S. has stimulated a new interest in comparative research. Explanations of the prolonged stagnation and contraction of the U.S. labor movement that focus on the U.S. alone run the risk of assuming that the U.S. case is normal, and that the decline of organized labor is a structural inevitability of advanced capitalism. By broadening their scope to include other industrialized countries with similar political economies and different labor histories, students of the labor movement will be better able to identify …

Tissue Characterization And Imaging Using Photon Density Waves, Lars O. Svaasand, Bruce J. Tromberg, Richard C. Haskell, Tsong-Tseh Tsay, Michael W. Berns
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
The optical properties of brain tissues have been evaluated by measuring the phase velocity and attenuation of harmonically modulated light. The phase velocity for photon density waves at 650-nm wavelength has been found to be in the range of 5 to 12% of the corresponding velocity in a nonscattering medium, and the optical penetration depth was in the range 2.9 to 5.2 mm. These results are used to predict the resolution of optical imaging of deep tissue structures by diffusely propagating incoherent photons. The results indicate that structures of a few millimeters in linear dimension can be identified at 10 …
Computer Aided Manufacturing For Production Environment, Biren K. Parikh
Computer Aided Manufacturing For Production Environment, Biren K. Parikh
Theses
Investments in new technology like Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) increased in the past few years because of the foreign competition in the world market as well as on the home ground. Improper investment in CAM and CIM resulted in the "Islands of Automation" instead of an integrated system. These "Islands of Automation" have created new problems for production planning and factory communication.
The objective of the thesis is to develop the methodology to selection and implementation of the CAM system in the production environment. It is to be noted that a CAM system is part of the overall CIM implementation, …
