Gas Dynamic Unstart In Superdetonative Ram Accelerators, Kaveh Ghorbanian, James D. Sterling Jan 1996

Gas Dynamic Unstart In Superdetonative Ram Accelerators, Kaveh Ghorbanian, James D. Sterling

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we analyze the reflection of non-reacting shock waves as oblique detonation waves. The 2D, steady, inviscid analysis makes use of detonation polar diagrams to identify incident shock angles that lead to reflected detonations, with and without detonation Mach stem formation. The implications of the results for design and operation of superdetonative ram accelerators are explored. The influence of the projectile forebody geometry, the propellant composition, and the takeover velocity is described. We conclude with a discussion of the significance of these parameters on superdetonative ram accelerator unstart phenomena.

Enhanced Combustion Pulsejet Engines For Mach 0 To 3 Applications, J. Sterling, K. Ghorbanian, T. Sobota Jan 1996

Enhanced Combustion Pulsejet Engines For Mach 0 To 3 Applications, J. Sterling, K. Ghorbanian, T. Sobota

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we discuss the cyclic operation of an enhanced combustion pulsejet engine (ECPE) applicable in the Mach number range of 0 to 3. The geometry of this engine naturally provides for integration into a new combined cycle engine with ramjets. As in the operation of conventional pulsejets, an ECPE provides engine aspiration, charge compression, combustion and expansion without the use of turbomachinery. The use of modern electronics, fuel injection, and feedback control offers the potential for performance improvements that could make the ECPE a cost-effective competitor for the turbojet engine. This article describes the operating cycle of a …

An Experimentally Obtainable Heat Source Due To Absorption Of Ultrasound In Biological Media, James L. Drewniak, F. Dunn Jan 1996

An Experimentally Obtainable Heat Source Due To Absorption Of Ultrasound In Biological Media, James L. Drewniak, F. Dunn

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Deposition of heat as a result of loss in an ultrasonic wave may result in damage to biological tissues. The extensive use of ultrasound for diagnostic purposes during pregnancy necessitates the evaluation of thermal risk to a developing fetus during routine clinical exposures. Because of the small ultrasonic absorption coefficient in soft tissues at low megahertz frequencies, temperature elevations exceeding 1 °C are not expected from clinically employed ultrasound systems, and there is no evidence that such small temperature increases can result in deleterious effects. However, when the propagation path includes bone, which is known to be highly lossy, theoretical …

Improved Methods For Electroplating Cadmium Sulfide Thin Films, Brandon Kemp, Robert Engelken, Arif Raza, Wasim Aleem, Imran Khan, Chris Barber Jan 1996

Improved Methods For Electroplating Cadmium Sulfide Thin Films, Brandon Kemp, Robert Engelken, Arif Raza, Wasim Aleem, Imran Khan, Chris Barber

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We report improved methods for electroplating cadmium sulfide (CMS) films. Aprevious problem was cracking/flaking of films deposited from organic solutions of elemental sulfur; attempts to improve adhesion via bath additives reduced grain size. Aqueous baths of thiosulfate ions yield cadmium-richness at low T temperatures (T), long deposition times, and/or poor bath stability. Developments in our work to be discussed include (1) plating ofuniform, adherent, and stoichiometric CdS from tetraethylene baths of CdCl 2 and elemental sulfur at T >70° C with minimal cracking/flaking, (2) improved uniformity/ adherence by use of CdL>, and (3) swept voltage methods in aqueous thiosulfate …

Bioremediation Treatability Studies For Soils Containing Herbicides, Chemicals, And Petroleum Products, Loring F. Nies, Matthew B. Mesarch

JTRP Technical Reports

Leaking underground storage tanks are widespread throughout the United States. It is estimated that there are 1.4 million underground gasoline storage tanks in the United States, with as many as 75,000 to 100,000 that may be leaking. In Indiana alone, more than 3,500 of the 15,000 registered underground storage tank facilities have reported leaks. Conventional remediation methods often involve pump-and-treat schemes for contaminated water, and excavation and burial of contaminated soil in hazardous waste landfills. These methods increase the risk of exposure to pollutants for workers and local residents. Furthermore, these methods merely involve the transfer of pollutants from one …

Laboratory Study On The Use Of Tire Shreds And Rubber-Sand In Backfilled And Reinforced Soil Applications, Andres Bernal, C. W. Lovell, Rodrigo Salgado Jan 1996

Laboratory Study On The Use Of Tire Shreds And Rubber-Sand In Backfilled And Reinforced Soil Applications, Andres Bernal, C. W. Lovell, Rodrigo Salgado

JTRP Technical Reports

Millions of scrap tires are discarded annually in the United States, the bulk of which are currently landfilled or stockpiled. This consumes valuable landfill space, or, if improperly disposed, creates a fire hazard and provides a prolific breeding ground for rats and mosquitoes. The use of tire shreds as lightweight fill material can sharply reduce the tire disposal problem. The present study, based on laboratory testing and numerical modeling examines the feasibility of incorporating tire shreds and rubber-sand mixtures as lightweight geomaterial in embankments and backfills. The growing interest in utilizing waste materials in civil engineering applications has opened the …

Environmental Bioassay Evaluation Of Foundry Waste Residuals, Kenneth Chad Bastian, James E. Alleman Jan 1996

Environmental Bioassay Evaluation Of Foundry Waste Residuals, Kenneth Chad Bastian, James E. Alleman

JTRP Technical Reports

Although the constructive reuse of foundry residuals represents a decidedly beneficial goal with distinct economic and environmental benefits, potential end-users are nonetheless reluctant to use these residuals, given an inherent concern about potential unforeseen environmental liabilities. Results of foundry residual leachate characterization to date strongly suggest that many ferrous foundries are discarding sands whose quality is fully amenable to their future use with embankment construction and related high-volume highway development activities. In order to provide additional assurance as to the environmental impact of foundry residual reuse, the MicrotoxTM bioassay has been used to quantify the response of living organisms (e.g., …

Remediation Of Hazardous Effluent Emitted From Beneath Newly Constructed Road Systems And Clogging Of Underdrain Systems, Ronald Fred Wukasch, Adil Siddiqui Jan 1996

Remediation Of Hazardous Effluent Emitted From Beneath Newly Constructed Road Systems And Clogging Of Underdrain Systems, Ronald Fred Wukasch, Adil Siddiqui

JTRP Technical Reports

The Indiana Department of Transportation uses recycled concrete pavement as aggregate for the construction of highways. The effluent from these pavements has a high pH. The high pH effluent can cause clogging of drains and vegetative kill around the outlet. This project looks into the source of the effluent water, its chemical composition and the approximate duration the problem can be expected to persist. The project also investigates possible methods for reduction of the problem in future installation. The approximate additional cost of these solutions and the problems associated with them are discussed as well.

An Investigation Into Manufacturing Execution Systems, K. W. Duley Jan 1996

An Investigation Into Manufacturing Execution Systems, K. W. Duley

Theses : Honours

Hardware and software developments of this decade have exposed an hiatus between business/management applications and process control in heavy industry in the implementation of computer technology. This document examines the development of discrete manufacturing and of relevant implementations of computing. It seeks to examine and to clarify the issues involved in a perceived current drive to bridge this gap, to integrate all the systems in a manufacturing enterprise in a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) in order to address two hypotheses: I) That overseas trends towards the development of manufacturing execution systems have application in the Australian industrial context. 2) That …

Influence Of Formation Processes On Oblique Detonation Wave Stabilization, K. Ghorbanian, J. D. Sterling Jan 1996

Influence Of Formation Processes On Oblique Detonation Wave Stabilization, K. Ghorbanian, J. D. Sterling

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article we report steady, two-dimensional, inviscid solutions for the near field and far field of a supersonic reactive flow over a variable-double-ramp geometry. The incident shock wave compresses and heats the reactants that will combust after flowing some induction length. Upon reaction, a detonation wave forms and intersects the leading wave at some distance from the ramp surface. In this article, reaction-polar diagrams are developed, and the detonation branch solutions are used to investigate the wave interaction processes that may lead to a steady three-wave structure. By considering this formation process new oblique detonation wave stabilization criteria based …

A New Device For Performing Simultaneous Sterno-Thoracic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Sst-Cpr), Deepak S. Gupta Jan 1996

A New Device For Performing Simultaneous Sterno-Thoracic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Sst-Cpr), Deepak S. Gupta

Theses and Dissertations

There are two different physiological mechanisms that cause blood to circulate around the human body during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The "cardiac pump" generates blood flow by squeezing blood out of the heart as the sternum is depressed. The "thoracic pump" generates flow by forcing blood out of the heart and the great vessels as the intrathoracic pressure rises due to chest compression.

To date, all CPR techniques try to circulate blood during cardiac arrest by exploiting elite; the cardiac pump or the thoracic pump mechanism of blood flow. No mechanical CPR device thus far invented has tried to exploit both mechanisms …

The Mobile Telephone: The Transportation Of Social Relationships, Kenneth C. Staples Jan 1996

The Mobile Telephone: The Transportation Of Social Relationships, Kenneth C. Staples

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In the studies of contemporary electronic media artifacts and their effects on society, television, satellites, and computers have been extensively investigated and their various impacts well documented. With regards to telecommunication technologies, academic scholarship is somewhat less, with most comment being restricted to either historic evolution, or technical description. Exceptions to this are, Marvin's reference to the telephone in her publication, When Old Technologies Were New: Thinking About Electronic Communication in the Late Nineteenth Century (1988}, and Umble's The Amish and the telephone: resistance and reconstruction (1992). Both of these publications are used for supporting arguments in my thesis investigating …

Ultrasound Modified Ferric Hydroxide/Cupric Ion Adsorption And Sequestration At Varying Ph Levels, Humberto Campos Jan 1996

Ultrasound Modified Ferric Hydroxide/Cupric Ion Adsorption And Sequestration At Varying Ph Levels, Humberto Campos

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was undertaken to determine if hydrous metal oxide adsorption, an important treatment method used to remove adsorbates from aqueous solution, could be enhanced through ultrasonic irradiation. A model system based on preformed hydrous ferric oxide as the adsorbent and copper as the adsorbate was investigated. Brief exposure of the preformed hydrous ferric oxide floe to intense ultrasonic radiation (ca. 13 Watts/cm2 ) in the presence of copper species effectively disrupted the flocculated particles permitting the copper adsorbate to access adsorption sites previously isolated within the floe. The experimental data indicate that ultrasonic disruption of pre-formed hydrous ferric oxide …

A Comparison Of Measurement Reliability Between A Sonic Digitizer And A Tape Measure On A Complex Three-Dimensional Object, Diane Darlene (Wheeler) Schou Jan 1996

A Comparison Of Measurement Reliability Between A Sonic Digitizer And A Tape Measure On A Complex Three-Dimensional Object, Diane Darlene (Wheeler) Schou

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Digitizers and scanners have begun to replace traditional devices for measuring three dimensional objects. However, there is a shortage of relevant research to compare digitizer tools with other measuring devices. The objective of this study was to compare the measurement reliability of a sonic digitizer to a traditional measuring tool, the tape measure, for measuring a complex, three-dimensional object. It was hypothesized that:

  1. H1 Data from measurements with the digitizer vary less than data from measurements with a tape measure at the 0.05 level of significance.
  2. H2 The data from eight complex surface measurements taken with a digitizer …

Kinetic Analysis Of The Fate Of Nitric Oxide Synthesized By Macrophages In Vitro, Randy S. Lewis, Snait Tamir, Steven R. Tannenbaum, William M. Deen

Faculty Publications

To investigate the fate of nitric oxide (NO) synthesized by activated macrophages, the concentrations of NO and its principal reaction products, nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-), were measured as a function of time in suspension cultures of RAW264.7 macrophages attached to microcarrier beads. Synthesis of NO became evident 2-5 h after stimulation of the cells, and steady concentrations of NO were achieved after about 9 h. The appearance of NO in the extracellular fluid coincided with the appearance of NO2- and NO3-, which were formed thereafter at approximately equal and constant rates. Using a kinetic model based on rate constants …

Smarts2, A Simple Model Of The Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Of Sunshine, Florida Solar Energy Center, Christian Gueymard

FSEC Energy Research Center®

An upgraded spectral radiation model called SMARTS2 is introduced. The solar shortwave direct beam irradiance is calculated from spectral transmittance functions for the main extinction processes in the cloudless atmosphere: Rayleigh scattering, aerosol extinction, and absorption by ozone, uniformly mixed gases, water vapor, and nitrogen dioxide. Temperature-dependent or pressure-dependent extinction coefficients have been developed for all these absorbing gases, based on recent spectroscopic data obtained either directly from the experimental literature or, in a preprocessed form, from MODTRAN2, a state-of-the-art rigorous code. The NO2 extinction effect, in both the UV and visible, is introduced for the first time in a …

Applications Of Nonlinear Control Using The State-Dependent Riccati Equation, David K. Parrish Dec 1995

Applications Of Nonlinear Control Using The State-Dependent Riccati Equation, David K. Parrish

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the relatively new theory of nonlinear control using state dependent coefficient factorizations to mimic linear state space systems. The control theory is a nonlinear quadratic approach, analogous to linear quadratic regulation. All implementations examined in this thesis are done strictly numerically. This thesis is meant to provide a proof of concept for both satellite control and for an artificial pancreas to regulate blood glucose levels in diabetics by automatic insulin injection. These simulations represent only a first step towards practical use of the NQR method, and do not address noise rejection or robustness issues.

Design, Fabrication, Processing, And Testing Of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Chemical Sensors, Brian S. Freeman

Theses and Dissertations

Chemical microsensors are a new field integrating chemical thin film technology with solid-state fabrication techniques to make devices capable of detecting chemicals in the environment. This thesis evaluated commercially available fabrication processes and numerous sensor designs for working chemical sensors. The commercial processes used were MUMPS for surface micromachined devices and MOSIS for bulk micromachined devices. Overall, eight fabrication runs and 29 different designs were made. Of these designs, two were shown to work effectively. Other designs failed due to fabrication problems and design errors that caused release problems. One design that worked was a surface micromachined chemoresistor with interdigitated …
