A Mixed-Dimensionality Modeling Approach For Interaction Of Heterogeneous Steam Reforming Reactions And Heat Transfer, Jeroen Valensa Jan 2009

A Mixed-Dimensionality Modeling Approach For Interaction Of Heterogeneous Steam Reforming Reactions And Heat Transfer, Jeroen Valensa

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Hydrogen is most often produced on an industrial scale by catalytic steam methane reforming, an equilibrium-limited, highly endothermic process requiring the substantial addition of heat at elevated temperatures. The extent of reaction, or conversion efficiency, of this process is known to be heat transfer limited. Scaling the industrial process equipment down to the size required for small, compact fuel cell systems has encountered difficulties due to increased heat losses at smaller scales. One promising approach to effectively scale down the reforming process is to coat the catalyst directly onto the heat exchange surfaces of an integrated reactor/heat exchanger. In this …

Development And Implementation Of Novel Bristle Tool For Surface Treatment Of Metallic Components, Piyush Khullar Jan 2009

Development And Implementation Of Novel Bristle Tool For Surface Treatment Of Metallic Components, Piyush Khullar

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Despite advances in paints and coatings technology, protective coatings are prone to eventual corrosion, degradation and/or failure. Consequently, a corrosive layer will develop that can undermine the performance and integrity of structural components. Therefore, both the corrosive layer and defunct coating must be periodically removed, and an acceptable level of surface cleanliness and texture must be obtained prior to the reapplication of new paint. Currently, an array of processes and equipment are used for efficiently cleaning and conditioning metallic surfaces, such as grit blasting, needle guns, and a variety of non-woven and coated abrasive tools.

This research investigates the method …

Vehicle Positioning Using Image Processing, Armadeep Kaur Jan 2009

Vehicle Positioning Using Image Processing, Armadeep Kaur

Masters Theses

"An imaging-processing approach is described that detects the position of a vehicle on a bridge or similar environment. A load-bearing vehicle must be carefully positioned on a bridge for quantitative bridge monitoring. The personnel required for setup and testing and the time required for bridge closure or traffic control are important management and cost considerations. Consequently, bridge monitoring and inspections are good candidates for smart embedded systems. The objectives of this work are to reduce the need for personnel time and to minimize the time for bridge closure. An approach is proposed that uses a passive target on the bridge …

Missouri River Recovery Program: Missouri River Basin Jan 2009

Missouri River Recovery Program: Missouri River Basin

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The Missouri River, the nation’s longest, travels more than 2,300 miles from Three Forks, Montana, to join the Mississippi River near St. Louis, Missouri. For centuries, the river has served as the center of life for the inhabitants of North America’s Great Plains. Following exploration and mapping by Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery in the early 1800s, the Missouri River became the gateway to the West.

Historically, the dynamic and untamed Missouri River has produced violent floods in the spring and summer with erosive forces that ate away its banks and turned its waters the color of mud.

Since …

Missouri River Recovery Program: Spring Rise Monitoring Jan 2009

Missouri River Recovery Program: Spring Rise Monitoring

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is committed to recover Missouri River species, while fulfilling its century-old responsibility to protect human health and safety. To aid in the recovery of the endangered pallid sturgeon, the Corps releases extra water from Missouri River reservoirs in March and May. These “spring pulses” mimic the historic river rises that resulted from melting snow on the plains and mountains, before the construction of dams on the river. Biologists believe these pulse events are necessary for Missouri River species to reproduce and survive, which is critical for a healthy river environment.

At the same time, …

Farm Tractor Rollover Protection: Why Simply Getting Rollover Protective Structures Installed On All Tractors Is Not Sufficient, Roger M. Hoy Jan 2009

Farm Tractor Rollover Protection: Why Simply Getting Rollover Protective Structures Installed On All Tractors Is Not Sufficient, Roger M. Hoy

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

In North America, agricultural is one of the most hazardous occupations, trailing only mining and construction in likelihood of experiencing a serious injury or fatality. Without quoting specific statistics, roughly one-half of the serious injuries experienced each year involve an agricultural tractor, and roughly one-half of the serious injuries involving tractors are rollovers. It is well established that when a tractor is equipped with a rollover protective structure (ROPS) and seatbelt, and both are utilized, serious injuries rarely, if ever occur, in the event of an overturn. In fact, tractor overturns are the leading cause of agricultural fatalities in the …

Plant Sterol And Policosanol Characterization Of Hexane Extracts From Grain Sorghum, Corn, And Their Ddgs, Caolina Leguizamón, Curtis L. Weller, Vicki L. Schlegel, Timothy P. Carr Jan 2009

Plant Sterol And Policosanol Characterization Of Hexane Extracts From Grain Sorghum, Corn, And Their Ddgs, Caolina Leguizamón, Curtis L. Weller, Vicki L. Schlegel, Timothy P. Carr

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Plant sterols (PS) and policosanols (PC) have been attributed with plasma cholesterol-lowering properties in humans. Hexane extracts from grain sorghum, corn and their distillers dried grain with solubles (DDGS), an important co-product of ethanol production, contain these health promoting compounds, which could be used to develop health promoting dietary products. However, limited information is currently available regarding optimal methods of extraction and their influence on plant sterol or PC levels and compositions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify lipids, particularly PS and PC extracted from grain sorghum and its DDGS using reflux and Soxtec methods. Corn and …

Indirect Land Use Emissions In The Life Cycle Of Biofuels: Regulations Vs. Science, Adam J. Liska, Richard K. Perrin Jan 2009

Indirect Land Use Emissions In The Life Cycle Of Biofuels: Regulations Vs. Science, Adam J. Liska, Richard K. Perrin

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Recent legislative mandates have been enacted at state and federal levels with the purpose of reducing life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transportation fuels. This legislation encourages the substitution of fossil fuels with “low-carbon” fuels. The burden is put on regulatory agencies to determine the GHG-intensity of various fuels, and those agencies naturally look to science for guidance. Even though much progress has been made in determining the direct life cycle emissions from the production of biofuels, the science underpinning the estimation of potentially significant emissions from indirect land use change (ILUC) is in its infancy. As legislation requires …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Grain sorghum is a rich source of phytochemicals. In this study, male hamsters were fed AIN-93M diets supplemented with a hexane-extractable lipid fraction from sorghum distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS). Diets contained 0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 5.0% (w/w) DDGS lipid extract. After 4 wk, the 5.0% DDGS lipids group had significantly lower plasma non-HDL cholesterol and liver esterified cholesterol concentration. Fecal neutral sterol (i.e., cholesterol) excretion was significantly higher in the 5.0% DDGS lipids group compared to the other treatments (66% higher compared to controls). Bile acid excretion was not affected by DDGS lipid intake. Fecal cholesterol excretion was …

Antiproliferation Properties Of Grain Sorghum Dry Distiller’S Grain Lipids In Caco-2 Cells, Richard Zbasnik, Timothy P. Carr, Curtis L. Weller, Keum Taek Hwang, Lijun Wang, Susan L. Cuppett, Vicki Schlegel Jan 2009

Antiproliferation Properties Of Grain Sorghum Dry Distiller’S Grain Lipids In Caco-2 Cells, Richard Zbasnik, Timothy P. Carr, Curtis L. Weller, Keum Taek Hwang, Lijun Wang, Susan L. Cuppett, Vicki Schlegel

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Antiproliferative properties of lipids extracted from grain sorghum (GS) dry distiller’s grain (DDG) were analyzed to determine the feasibility of developing GS coproducts as a source for human health dietary ingredients. The lipid extract of GSDDG was delivered to human colon carcinoma (Caco-2) cells by solubilizing 0−1000 μg/mL of GS-DDG lipids in 100 μg/mL increments with micelles. A significant reduction in cell viability (25−50%) resulted at treatment levels of 400−1000 μg/mL GS-DDG lipids (p < 0.05). Alternatively, total protein levels of cells treated with 400, 500, and 600 μg/mL of GS-DDG lipid were not significantly different from the control, indicating cell growth during the treatment period. Total cell counts for the control were not significantly different from the GS-DDG lipid treated cells, but dead cell counts increased by 10% for the latter sample with a concomitant increase of the intercellular protein lactate dehydrogenase leakage (30−40%) in the medium. Preliminary analysis by the fluorescence-activated cell method (FACs) demonstrated that nonviable cells were in either the early apoptotic, late apoptotic, or necrotic stage post-treatment with 400, 500, and 600 μg/mL GS-DDG lipids. Physiochemical characterization of the GS-DDG lipids used for the antiproliferation study showed the presence of vitamin E (predominantly γ-tocopherol), triacylglycerides (predominantly linoleic acid), policosanols, aldehydes, and sterols (predominantly campesterol and stigmasterol), each of which or as synergistic/additive group of constituents may be responsible for the antiproliferative effect.

Usability Investigation Of E-Business Web-Based Forms, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan, Betsy Page Sigman Jan 2009

Usability Investigation Of E-Business Web-Based Forms, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan, Betsy Page Sigman

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Usability on Web sites is critical because almost no training is provided for users on commercial sites. Instead, Web design relies on standards and consistency across sites. Traditional usability results indicated that computer forms should follow paper-based forms. Yet, Web paradigms have evolved that are quite different from paper-based forms. Specifically, this study reveals that users commit fewer errors and prefer simple forms limited to a single concept per screen. This conclusion significantly alters the recommendations for designing business forms.

Development Of Measurement And Modeling Techniques To Quantify Atmospheric Deposition Of Persistent, Bioaccumulative And Toxic Chemicals In The Great Lakes, Mark D. Rowe Jan 2009

Development Of Measurement And Modeling Techniques To Quantify Atmospheric Deposition Of Persistent, Bioaccumulative And Toxic Chemicals In The Great Lakes, Mark D. Rowe

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Measurement and modeling techniques were developed to improve over-water gaseous air-water exchange measurements for persistent bioaccumulative and toxic chemicals (PBTs). Analytical methods were applied to atmospheric measurements of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Additionally, the sampling and analytical methods are well suited to study semivolatile organic compounds (SOCs) in air with applications related to secondary organic aerosol formation, urban, and indoor air quality.

A novel gas-phase cleanup method is described for use with thermal desorption methods for analysis of atmospheric SOCs using multicapillary denuders. The cleanup selectively removed hydrogen-bonding chemicals from samples, including much of …

Long-Range Pollution Transport: Trans-Atlantic Mechanisms And Lagrangian Modeling Methods, Robert Christopher Owen Jan 2009

Long-Range Pollution Transport: Trans-Atlantic Mechanisms And Lagrangian Modeling Methods, Robert Christopher Owen

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Over the past several decades, it has become apparent that anthropogenic activities have resulted in the large-scale enhancement of the levels of many trace gases throughout the troposphere. More recently, attention has been given to the transport pathway taken by these emissions as they are dispersed throughout the atmosphere. The transport pathway determines the physical characteristics of emissions plumes and therefore plays an important role in the chemical transformations that can occur downwind of source regions. For example, the production of ozone (O3) is strongly dependent upon the transport its precursors undergo. O3 can initially be formed …

An Algorithm For Identifying Novel Targets Of Transcription Factor Families: Application To Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1 Targets, Yue Jiang, Bojan Cukic, Donald A. Adjeroh, Heath D. Skinner, Jie Lin, Qingxi J. Shen, Bing-Hua Jiang

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Efficient and effective analysis of the growing genomic databases requires the development of adequate computational tools. We introduce a fast method based on the suffix tree data structure for predicting novel targets of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) from huge genome databases. The suffix tree data structure has two powerful applications here: one is to extract unknown patterns from multiple strings/sequences in linear time; the other is to search multiple strings/sequences using multiple patterns in linear time. Using 15 known HIF-1 target gene sequences as a training set, we extracted 105 common patterns that all occur in the 15 training genes …
