This thesis presents the design of a novel microfluidic sensor for continuous monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP), intended as a less invasive alternative to current monitoring techniques. The sensor targets patients with critical and chronic neurological conditions, aiming to provide real-time data on ICP fluctuations. The microfluidic intracranial pressure sensor is designed for implantation beneath the skull, on the dura mater, and integrates a PDMS-based microfluidic strain sensor with wireless data transmission. This project introduces AVSWU-Pack, a modular simulation framework designed to evaluate and simulate blockchain-based communication in autonomous vehicular networks adapted directly from Dr. Gabriel Solomon’s work(2). Built on top of Veins, SUMO, INET, and OMNeT++, the platform enables vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle communication with secure data exchange via gRPC-based integration with a Polkadot blockchain node. Epilepsy is a serious neurological disorder that can significantly impact an individual's quality of life. This study proposes a novel method for the detection and mitigation of epileptic seizures through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and a brain-computer interface (BCI) system. Statistical features were extracted from intracranial electroencephalography (IEEG) signals using a multi-resolution decomposition technique and used to train five classification algorithms: support vector machines (SVM), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), Naïve Bayes (NB), artificial neural networks (ANN), and long short-term memory (LSTM). Sustainable construction approaches are essential for mitigating environmental concerns and enhancing energy efficiency in educational facilities. This research examines sustainability solutions in Egyptian educational institutions, concentrating on the design, building, and operating stages. The study combines quantitative and qualitative assessments from a survey of 66 industry experts, evaluating essential sustainability criteria like energy efficiency, water conservation, material sustainability, and operating expenses. Statistical methods, such as the Relative Importance Index (RII) and correlation analysis, were used to assess the relevance and interrelations among sustainability factors. Transportation agencies face increasing challenges in identifying and prioritizing which infrastructure assets are most critical to maintain and protect, particularly amid aging networks, limited budgets, and growing threats from climate change and extreme events. However, existing prioritization approaches often lack consistency and fail to adequately incorporate diverse stakeholder perspectives. This study develops a systematic, stakeholder-informed method for ranking transportation assets based on their criticality to the overall transportation system. In Mecúfi, Mozambique, the mothers of children who attend school through the DIFF EDUCATION program have a strong desire to learn Portuguese, the country’s national language, due to colonization. However, they have minimal formal education and little to no experience with technology. They are unable to read or write in any language, including their native language, Makhuwa, making many current educational resources unusable. This leaves these mothers without accessible, culturally relevant tools to help address their linguistic needs.

A Ka-Band, 26.5–40 GHz, omnidirectional metamaterial-inspired antenna was designed, built, and tested to develop a simple printed compact (10.3 mm × 10.3 mm × 0.0787 mm) multiple-point sensor for air pollution monitoring. This Ka-band antenna generated a dual band at 27.49–29.74 GHz and 33.0–34.34 GHz. The VSWR values within the two bands are less than 1.5. The radiation and total efficiency are 97% and 92% in the first band and they are both 96% in the second band. The maximum gain is between 3.26 and 5.50 dBi and between 5.09 and 6.52 dBi in the first and second bands, respectively. …

This research examines the safety challenges faced by Transportation Maintenance Technicians (TMTs) at the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). By ana-lyzing extensive injury data from 2009 to 2024, along with insights from surveys and interactions with ALDOT personnel, this effort highlights significant trends and relation-ships among injury characteristics such as nature, cause, source, and affected body parts. The findings reveal considerable costs and productivity losses associated with common injury types that warrant the need for targeted interventions. The DAMPER project, which stands for Delay and Attenuation Modules for Propagation Emulation and Response, is a hands-on system designed to help test how radio signals behave in the real world. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections remain an ongoing clinical problem due to biofilm persistence and antibiotic resistance. Standard antibiotic susceptibility testing cannot accurately reproduce flow conditions and the spatial complexity of the in vivoenvironment and is thus questionable in relevance to device-related infections. This study examines a microfluidic device designed to simulate physiologically relevant wall shear stress and antibiotic gradients in Escherichia coli biofilms. The polydimethylsiloxane-based system integrates a 16-well culture chamber with a gradient generator. Biofilm growth was observed using fluorescence microscopy of green fluorescent protein-labeled bacteria. This thesis evaluated Alcanivorax Borkumensis’ (A. Borkumensis) ability to degrade polystyrene in a pyruvate-rich environment to determine if the bacteria could degrade the microplastic when grown in pyruvate. The thesis explored the metabolic behavior of A. Borkumensis when pyruvate is used to start the gluconeogenesis pathway, which is the start of the metabolic pathway when degradation occurs. The bacterium was grown in ONR7a medium, that was adjusted to a pH of 8.1, and 1% pyruvate; then it was processed by centrifugation and washing before experimentation began. Foot strike patterns have been categorized into rearfoot-strike (RFS), midfoot-strike (MFS), and forefoot-strike (FFS) [1]. The purpose of this study was to determine whether different vascular phantoms, with and without a surrogate arm, could serve as effective analogs to the human brachial artery for assessing endothelial dysfunction, an early indicator of cardiovascular disease, particularly atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is characterized by plaque buildup and endothelial damage, which precede more severe clinical events and are often detectable through changes in vascular function. A 40” water tower was used to simulate diastolic pressure, enabling water flow through each phantom. The objective of our project is to create, design and test a fully functional continuously monitoring hydrogen peroxide sensor. This sensor aims to identify early detection of diseases associated with oxidative stress which can include certain types of cancer, neurodivergent diseases and cardiovascular diseases. Early detection of hydrogen peroxide levels can provide patients with early treatment and can help reduce disease progression. Overall, the biosensor prioritizes early detection of ROS levels allowing various consumers such as healthcare sectors, patients, and research institutions to benefit from continuous monitoring for health management and disease prevention.

Energy demands have been on the rise, as environmentally harmful power generation systems stay popular due to lower costs and compact designs compared to renewable energy infrastructure. We challenge this problem with a modular photovoltaic microgrid system for power generation in underutilized spaces. The Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) charge controller employed is low-cost and power efficient. This report presents the preliminary design for a distributed localization framework for a multi-robot system. Many robotics research papers provide simulations of proposed algorithms in regards to formation control and task allocation. However, it is often that these proposals are without hardware experiments, being limited only to simulation. The objective of this framework is to provide a hardware implementation of a distributed Kalman filtering algorithm for multi-agent localization, as well as provide grounds for future multi-agent experiments. Increasing labor costs and agricultural demands have created a need for automated apple harvesting. However, automated apple harvesting via robotic manipulation must overcome certain challenges to be an effective and efficient method.
