There is an increasing demand for digital crypto-currencies to be more secure and robust to meet the following business requirements: (1) low transaction fees and (2) the privacy of users. Nowadays, Bitcoin is gaining traction and wide adoption. Many well-known businesses have begun accepting bitcoins as a means of making financial payments. However, the susceptibility of Bitcoin networks to information propagation delay, increases the vulnerability to attack of the Bitcoin network, and decreases its throughput performance. This paper introduces and critically analyses new network clustering methods, named Locality Based Clustering (LBC), Ping Time Based Approach (PTBC), Super Node Based Clustering …

A Qualitative Descriptive Study On Re-Assessing The Mental Certification By Faa For Future Pilots, Kaung Z. Min
Student Works
Mental illness becomes one of the main problems that most pilots do not usually address. It is not because pilots do not have the courage or are open enough to talk with someone, but because the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) forces them to hide from mental depression. Most of the time, the pilots are not willing to declare such illnesses as they fear losing their job; simultaneously, the Federal Aviation Agencies across the world require pilots to be in peat health, including their mental condition, to operate the aircraft. While it can be said that the passengers’ and crews’ safety …

Construction Management Internship: A Key Opportunity For Assessment And Continuous Curriculum Improvement, James S. Vaux, Bree Dority, Dana E. Vaux
The Professional Constructor
The internship is an integral part of most Construction Management curricula. Studies have noted the importance and reciprocal value of internships for the student, the employer, and the academic program. However, to date, no studies have specifically outlined the value internships provide to the CM program for assessment and evaluation. This paper examines the value of the CM internship as an indirect measure to assess and incorporate change into program curricula. With 10 years of qualitative and quantitative data collected from CM student interns, industry employers, and university internship supervisors, this study supports that CM internships are a valuable tool …

We usually hope that social norms discourage injustice. However, we are all witnesses to harmful norms enforced by governments, such as xenophobia, which need to be contested and changed. Previous studies have concluded that it is possible to change a harmful norm through contestation by powerless actors if suitable structural conditions exist. However, these structural conditions have not been sufficiently studied and, as such, are the focus of this paper. Our paper begins with a review of well-established micro-level theories of social identity theory (SIT), recast as a set of 42 discrete theoretical statements. These statements are then re-expressed in …

Continuous urbanization and industrialization lead to plenty of rural residents migrating to cities for a living, which seriously accelerated the population hollowing issues. This generated series of social issues, including residential estate idle and numerous vigorous laborers migrating from undeveloped rural areas to wealthy cities and towns. Quantitatively determining the population hollowing characteristic is the priority task of realizing rural revitalization. However, the traditional field investigation methods have obvious deficiencies in describing socio-economic phenomena, especially population hollowing, due to weak efficiency and low accuracy. Here, this paper conceives a novel scheme for representing population hollowing levels and exploring the spatiotemporal …

Advancements in communication and environmental technology may mark the end of aviation as we know it. Numerous people who were forced to remain at home during the pandemic have gotten a taste of a life in which they spend more time with their immediate families and are just as productive at work. Many meetings that individuals used to travel across the nation to attend are now more commonly streamed online for their convenience. Not only that, but the ability to communicate with loved ones who live far away via Facetime and other video-calling technologies has made it possible for us …

Intensifying permafrost thaw alters carbon cycling by mobilizing large amounts of terrestrial substrate into aquatic ecosystems. Yet, few studies have measured aquatic carbon fluxes and constrained drivers of ecosystem carbon balance across heterogeneous Arctic landscapes. Here, we characterized hydrochemical and landscape controls on fluvial carbon cycling, quantified fluvial carbon fluxes, and estimated fluvial contributions to ecosystem carbon balance across 33 watersheds in four ecoregions in the continuous permafrost zone of the western Canadian Arctic: unglaciated uplands, ice-rich moraine, and organic-rich lowlands and till plains. Major ions, stable isotopes, and carbon speciation and fluxes revealed patterns in carbon cycling across ecoregions …

Advances In Power System Operation And Optimization, You Lin
Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations
The modern power system has witnessed an increasing penetration of distributed energy resources and modern loads with variable frequency drives. The increasing complexity brings great challenges to modern power system operations. Significant efforts have been made to develop more accurate power system operation and optimization methods. The tradeoff between computation and the model structure makes the problem nontrivial to solve and analyze. Enabled by the wide deployment of PMUs and advanced machine learning algorithms, we improve the conventional power system operation and optimization techniques by improving the accuracy of power system measurements, implementing new power system modeling structures, and performing …
Optimization Of Drive Time And Competitiveness In Sports League Design, Zhuo Chen
Optimization Of Drive Time And Competitiveness In Sports League Design, Zhuo Chen
Operations Research and Engineering Management Theses and Dissertations
Club sports, also known as recreational team sports, are prevalent in the metropolitan areas of United States nowadays. However, there is a key concern for organizers, which is how to reduce the time that players spend driving to and from matches while keeping league divisions competitive. We adopt a three-step approach to solve this problem. Initially, we analyze the drive time data between clubs’ locations to determine the geographic regions for the league. And then, clubs are assigned to divisions based on their rankings within in the league as well as their home facilities’ geographic regions. Finally, divisions are further …

Data Fusion For Non-Motorized Volume Estimation: A Machine Learning Approach, Md. Mintu Miah
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
ABSTRACT: Despite increased awareness at the state and federal levels of the design and policy concerns associated with nonmotorized infrastructure, communities typically develop strategies to estimate network-wide nonmotorized traffic. However, past research fails to provide the same level of estimation sophistication as motor vehicles due to a lack of investment, which limits increased understanding and capability among communities in network-wide nonmotorized traffic volume estimation. Although previous studies introduce machine learning, Neural Networks, and feature engineering to motorized traffic volume estimation, nonmotorized traffic estimation experiences limited attempts to use these advanced techniques. This dissertation addresses this deficiency in bicycle volume estimation …

Early COVID-19 lockdowns in the first half of 2020 largely kept people at home, thereby reducing motor vehicle traffic levels. Theoretically, reduced traffic exposure should have resulted in reduced motor vehicle crashes. However, a variety of factors may have complicated this relationship. In order to better understand the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on traffic safety outcomes, we explore fatalities, injuries, and total crashes before and during the lockdowns on both the national and state levels. We provide descriptive statistics and create negative binomial regressions exploring the role of vehicle, user, and built environment factors on traffic safety outcomes. Findings suggest …
