Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering Tests On Light Beams Of Cold-Formed Steel, Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering May 1939

Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering Tests On Light Beams Of Cold-Formed Steel, Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

I. OBJECT OF THIS REPORT Since the investigations discussed in the previous report have proved that the stress distribution at midspan was fairly uniform in the narrowest, medium and widest beams of the 14 gage series, it seemed unnecessary to carry out investigations on the remaining two intermediate beams A-14-66 and A-l4-610. Three beams of the 22 gage series have been investigated so far, namely B-22-84a and b and B-22-88a. Detailed stress distribution surveys have been carried out at midspan on beams B-22-84b and B-22-88a. It was impossible to carry out such a survey on beam B-22-84a, since this beam …

Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering Tests On Light Beams Of Cold-Formed Steel, Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

I. OBJECT OF THIS REPORT After having obtained preliminary information from the abbreviated tests referred to in the previous report, a detailed survey of the stress distribution over the bottom flange at midspan has been carried out for the beams A-14-612b, A-14-612a and A-14-68a (in chronological order). Furthermore a special investigation has been made at the same section of beam A-14-612a for the purpose of determining the accuracy of the actual strain measurements.

Organization Of Geophysical Parties For Foreign Exploration, Charles Howard Dresbach Jan 1939

Organization Of Geophysical Parties For Foreign Exploration, Charles Howard Dresbach

Professional Degree Theses

"Special conditions encountered in much foreign work make it necessary to consider many factors which are not encountered in domestic programs of geophysical exploration for oil. Although extremely difficult working conditions are frequently met in domestic operations by company and contract crews, the large store of past experience, the availability of fresh supplies, replacement or new equipment, and the proximity of the helpful home office make their surmountal more or less a matter of routine. Contrariwise, foreign operations are frequently conducted under much more difficult conditions, supplies and equipment can be secured only after long and costly delays, and the …

Malaria Control Engineering On The Pickwick Reservoir, Cornelius Wolfram Kruse Jan 1939

Malaria Control Engineering On The Pickwick Reservoir, Cornelius Wolfram Kruse

Professional Degree Theses

"During the past year in an area extending south of a line between Norfolk, Virginia and St. Louis, Missouri, it has been estimated that about 10,000 deaths and staggering economic losses were caused by malaria fever...Since the recent inauguration of river development projects on the various streams in the so-called "malaria belt" of our country, malaria control methods on impounded waters have been of increasing concern to the health workers of the South...Mosquito control on impounded waters must be constructed into the dam design and requires a careful program of reservoir preparation or conditioning of the body of water so …

The Management Of Mobile Loading Units In Mines Working In Number V And Vi Seams Of Illinois And Indiana, Kirk Vern Cammack Jan 1939

The Management Of Mobile Loading Units In Mines Working In Number V And Vi Seams Of Illinois And Indiana, Kirk Vern Cammack

Professional Degree Theses

"The knowledge and skill a face boss must have today is far beyond that required of even a mine foreman in hand-loading days. the care of material, the direction of the working force, the care and maintenance of equipment, the provisions for the safety of the men: all these are problems requiring the best of a boss' efforts. Because of these factors, the maintenance of a constant tonnage today rests almost directly on the section foreman. With this in mind, the following material has been prepared from the viewpoint of the face boss rather than from that of a superintendent …

Some Effects Of Geology On The Relation Between Rainfall And Run-Off, James Smythe Reger Jan 1939

Some Effects Of Geology On The Relation Between Rainfall And Run-Off, James Smythe Reger

Professional Degree Theses

"For the past five years, the writer has been engaged either directly or indirectly in the investigation of water supplies. Studies and observations made in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and New Mexico, have brought to his attention the importance of geology to hydrology. This is especially true in reference to the relation between rainfall and run-off. In all texts and other publications relating to hydrology, the importance of geology to the subject is hardly more than mentioned. In the absence of actual stream flow records, many engineers resort to either the "direct comparative method", or the "rainfall percentage method", in estimating …

Construction Of A Concentrating Plant In The Waco Area Of The Tri-State District, William Henry Backer Jan 1939

Construction Of A Concentrating Plant In The Waco Area Of The Tri-State District, William Henry Backer

Professional Degree Theses

"Company: St. Louis Smelting and Refining Company...The fee is some five hundred acres of mining land is owned by the company, and an additional two hundred acres is held under a mining lease. Drilling had proved the ore to occur in a dolomitic horizon and to contain from 3 to 12 per cent zinc and small quantities of lead. Early in 1930, some thought was given by the officials of the company to the erection of a concentrator to mill the ore from this acreage. During the ensuing months a basic flow sheet and type of structure were tentatively approved, …

Rural Distribution Line Protection, William Henry Rollman Jan 1939

Rural Distribution Line Protection, William Henry Rollman

Professional Degree Theses

"Considerable attention has been given the problem of providing low load density rural territory with electric service. In order that such supply may be economically justifiable, distribution system construction and operating costs must be considerably lower than that prevailing in urban or other territory having better load factors. It is the distribution engineer's problem to design, construct, operate and maintain a distribution system to furnish adequate and economical electric service to this low load density rural territory. In general, the rural line involves not only the circuit itself, but also the station equipment including transformers and protective devices for both …

The Design And Equipment Of A Model Coal Mine For The Union Pacific Coal Company, Superior, Wyoming, William Thomas Sharp Jan 1939

The Design And Equipment Of A Model Coal Mine For The Union Pacific Coal Company, Superior, Wyoming, William Thomas Sharp

Professional Degree Theses

"In order to replace several mines in the Superior field that are near completion, the Union Pacific Coal Company have opened up the D. O. Clark Mine at Superior, Sweetwater County, Wyoming. They first contemplated opening up the individual seams from the out-croppings. This would have necessitated moving the present camp of Superior several miles west of the present site and building several miles of additional railroad. This plan was abandoned because of the burdensome cost. Then the idea was conceived of driving rock slopes down against the pitch of the various seams. By doing so, they could locate the …

Effects Of Zirconium Compounds On A Bright Glaze, Stuart Dods Jan 1939

Effects Of Zirconium Compounds On A Bright Glaze, Stuart Dods

Bachelors Theses

"The standard method for producing opacity and to some extend sic mattness in a glaze has always been the use of small amounts of tin oxide. This oxide, however, is very expensive and tends to fluccuate sic in price over a wide range due to world market conditions. The ceramic industry, therefore, has been searching for some substitutes for the tin oxide with some success. At the present time zinc oxide, antimony oxide, and zirconium oxide are used with varying degrees of success as opacifiers. Zirconium oxide and compounds are less soluble than the other oxides previously used. Therefore, it …

Reopening An Abandoned Tri-State Zinc Mine - Waco, Missouri, Edgar Carroll Long Jan 1939

Reopening An Abandoned Tri-State Zinc Mine - Waco, Missouri, Edgar Carroll Long

Professional Degree Theses

"Early in the year of 1937, the company employing the writer decided to reopen an old mining property located in Kansas, one and one-quarter miles west of Waco, Missouri. This property is known as the Grasselli No. 1, the lease of which had been acquired a short time prior to the depression of 1930. This property had been extensively mined on upper levels (195-foot, 176-foot, and 150-foot) by former operators and was a noteworthy producer of sphalerite. It was worked from the time of the beginning of the World War until about 1928. The lowest level, 285-foot, had hardly been …

A Process For Making Refractory Insulating Brick, Albert Lloyd Tetley Jan 1939

A Process For Making Refractory Insulating Brick, Albert Lloyd Tetley

Bachelors Theses

"The object of this study was to investigate the fundamental principles of producing an insulating brick by making the pore structure of air bubbles entrapped in a clay slip. Since a clay water mixture or any material containing entrapped air will loose this air when placed under vacuum, it is thought that placing the clay slips under a pressure would cause a considerable pore structure in the slip when the pressure is released. In the common method of making insulting brick, the fired brick must be ground to size as they cannot be molded to a definite size and shape. …

Coordination Of Transportation Systems Of The United States, Herman Blickensderfer Jan 1939

Coordination Of Transportation Systems Of The United States, Herman Blickensderfer

Masters Theses

"To any thinking man it must be apparent that the railroads are of vital necessity to the country at large as they can more cheaply move a host of the heavy commodities than can the trucks, and of course the waterways do not and cannot reach every part of the vast territory that must be served. On the other hand it is equally apparent that many of the other types of traffic can be handled more readily and cheaply by truck than by rail. This would lead one to conclude that some way should be found to give to each …

Organic Ion-Exchange Materials, Harry Burrell Jun 1938

Organic Ion-Exchange Materials, Harry Burrell

Theses

This thesis is offered as partial fulfilment for the degree of Chemical Engineer at the Newark College of Engineering. It covers a very new subject - one which has been rather intensively developed by several investigators during the past three years. The writer has had the fortunate opportunity of working on organic ion-exchange materials at the Ellis-Foster Co., which kindly gave permission through Mr. Carleton Ellis for the publication of experimental results. Many thanks are due to Dr. Frank B. Root, the laboratory director, whose gracious, constructive criticisms aided the writer in all phases of the work.

An attempt has …

Professional Degree Theses

"The present Upper Mississippi River Canalization Program provides for a channel depth of nine feet, with suitable widths, at low water, in the Upper Mississippi River between the Missouri River and Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was adopted by the River and Harbor Act of July 3, 1930, as amended by Public Resolution No. 10, Seventy-second Congress, First Session, approved February 24, 1932. The establishment of this nine-foot channel requires the construction of twenty-six dams and accompanying locks - two of which were already constructed - at selected points throughout the distance between Minneapolis and the mouth of the Missouri River...This series …

Application Of Small-Scale, Movable-Bed River Models To Channel Improvement Studies Of The Middle Mississippi River, Eugene H. Woodman Jan 1938

Application Of Small-Scale, Movable-Bed River Models To Channel Improvement Studies Of The Middle Mississippi River, Eugene H. Woodman

Professional Degree Theses

"This paper deals primarily with the use of small-scale models in the study of plans for improving the channel for navigation in several reaches of the Middle Mississippi River. However, it was considered expedient to include a discussion of hydraulic model experimentation in general before dealing with specific cases, in order that the reader might obtain the greatest possible satisfaction from the discussion.

The first part of this paper includes: a discussion of the theory of models, wherein the value and utility of models are demonstrated; the application of models to hydraulic problems, including the requirements for a model to …

The Latouche Mining Method As Used At The Alaska Juneau Gold Mine, Willard Alexander Gallemore Jan 1938

The Latouche Mining Method As Used At The Alaska Juneau Gold Mine, Willard Alexander Gallemore

Professional Degree Theses

"The Latouche Mining Method has been used at the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company only since 1933, and is used in that part of the mine below the main tramming level. It consists of a series of radiating "long holes" (21 feet) drilled from stope raises, over the back of the stope. These holes break the rock into the stopes, from where it goes through bulldoze chambers to oreways leading to chutes on the No. 10 level. On this level, the ore is drawn into Granby Cars, trammed to the Main Shaft, and hoisted to No. 4 level. On this …
