An Analysis Of The (N-1,N) Pad ̌Approximant To The Ideal Delay Operator In Terms Of Bessell Functions., Carl Richard Erdmann Jan 1974

An Analysis Of The (N-1,N) Pad ̌Approximant To The Ideal Delay Operator In Terms Of Bessell Functions., Carl Richard Erdmann

Masters Theses

"A realizable, lowpass, non-minimum phase approximation to the ideal distortion less delay operator e-st0 is analyzed in terms of the Bessel functions. The characteristics of the first ten members of the approximation are explicitly considered in this paper. The approximation is demonstrated to be realizable for all orders. Amplitude and phase characteristics are described in relation to the ideal delay operator in compact form and in terms of existing ii tabulated functions. Both amplitude and delay bandwidths are characterized by simple and accurate approximations. The maximally flat properties of both amplitude and delay responses are demonstrated. The transient …

Study Of Techniques For Designing Large Digital Systems Interactively., Harold Dale Puls Jan 1974

Study Of Techniques For Designing Large Digital Systems Interactively., Harold Dale Puls

Masters Theses

"FLOWWARE [1-4] is an interactive register transfer language based upon the concept of flowcharting. The graphic nature of the language, however, generates a few disadvantages when it is used on a large design. Changes have been made to the basic FLOWWARE package to aid the user in specifying and displaying his design. In addition, responsibility for the design has been shifted to the remote large computer to lessen the size requirement on the local minicomputer"--Abstract, p. ii

On The Extension Of The Output Capabilities Of Flowware, A Graphical Interactive Digital System Simulator., R. Dean Delker Jan 1974

On The Extension Of The Output Capabilities Of Flowware, A Graphical Interactive Digital System Simulator., R. Dean Delker

Masters Theses

"A research effort which addresses the problem of providing output from a register transfer level digital simulator which allows the user to better understand how his simulated system functions are described. A review of the output capabilities of existing register transfer level systems indicates that a strictly textual output leaves much to be desired, and for that reason, this work concentrates on developing forms of meaningful graphical output displays. This criterion of "meaningfulness" can be considered as a twofold objective to be reached in that the output must both reflect the functioning of the system and be presented in a …

Amine Flotation Of Feldspar From Magnetite Concentrate., Gary William Hudiburgh Jr. Jan 1974

Amine Flotation Of Feldspar From Magnetite Concentrate., Gary William Hudiburgh Jr.

Masters Theses

"The gangue in some magnetite ore bodies contains feldspar; the alkali content of the feldspar reduces the usefulness of these iron ores. One method of decreasing the feldspar content in magnetite concentrate is froth flotation.

The amine flotation of feldspar from magnetite concentrate was investigated using zeta potential measurements, Hallimond tube flotation tests and laboratory-scale flotation tests. The zeta potential of various feldspars (microcline, albite, anorthite, oligoclase and anorthoclase) were determined as a function of pH; the point of zero charge ranged from pH 1.4 to 2.5. Hallimond tube flotation tests using two amine reagents were conducted on the feldspars. …

A Training Simulation For Rural Electric Cooperative Staff., David F. Larcker

Masters Theses

"The simulation described in this thesis can be applied as a training tool to teach the management personnel of rural electric cooperatives the elements of decision making in a dynamically interreacting business environment. Initially, the major managerial problem areas of a typical rural electric cooperative were identified. These stimulated the development of a training simulation which realistically embodied the alternatives available to management personnel during the various stages of decision making. The final simulation design was a board type of game able to provide the feedback necessary for a learning experience" -- Abstract, p. ii

The Geology And Hydrogeology Of The New Lead Belt, Missouri, Charles Scott Fletcher Jan 1974

The Geology And Hydrogeology Of The New Lead Belt, Missouri, Charles Scott Fletcher

Masters Theses

"In order to analyze the effects of pumping groundwater from underground lead mines upon present groundwater resources of the New Lead Belt area, the geology and hydrogeology of that area must first be determined. The primary method of investigation of this analysis was interpretation of ecologic and hydrogeologic data taken from water well logs and mineral exploration well logs, with supplemental information supplied by published and unpublished literature sources. From all these sources of data, structural contour maps of the Precambrian erosional surface; the tops of the Lamotte, Bonneterre, and Davis Formations; isopachous maps of the Davis and the Lamotte/Bonneterre …

Effect Of Sweeping Sinusoidal Excitation On Nonlinear Dynamic Systems., Md. Mosharraf Hossain Jan 1974

Effect Of Sweeping Sinusoidal Excitation On Nonlinear Dynamic Systems., Md. Mosharraf Hossain

Masters Theses

"The response of viscous damped, cubic spring systems to excitations having exponentially varying frequency cannot be written in a closed form. This report summarizes a numerical investigation of hardening and softening cubic systems influenced by these excitations and provides information concerning the effects of varying viscous damping, system nonlinearity, and excitation sweep rate on system behavior near resonance. Results are reported in terms of maximum response attained during sweeping and the frequency at which maximum response occurs.

It has been found that if hardening cubic systems are subjected to sweeping excitations wherein the frequency sweeps down through resonance, the maximum …

The emphasis was on the action of surface modifiers such as Na2Cr2O7, starch, SO2, CuSO4 and NaCN in sphalerite flotation and in the galena-chalcopyrite separation. The objective of the investigation was to monitor the relative oxidation states of the mineral and reagent constituents and correlate these …

Two Dimensional Radiant Interchange Between Two Isothermal Semi-Infinite Parallel Strips., Stanley Earl Mckinney Jan 1974

Two Dimensional Radiant Interchange Between Two Isothermal Semi-Infinite Parallel Strips., Stanley Earl Mckinney

Masters Theses

"Four straight forward solution methods were used to determine the two-dimensional variation of the radiosity on two identical constant temperature, gray, semi-infinite parallel strips. Physical convergence parameters were developed for the one-dimensional case and extended to two dimensions. A study using these parameters was undertaken to identify the preferable method. The solutions obtained with this "best method" agree well with the one-dimensional solutions. The error is estimated to be less than one percent" -- Abstract, p. ii

Effect Of Nodule Count And Cooling Rate On The Matrix Of Nodular Iron., Subrata Sen Gupta Jan 1974

Effect Of Nodule Count And Cooling Rate On The Matrix Of Nodular Iron., Subrata Sen Gupta

Masters Theses

"The objective of this investigation was to establish the relationship between the nodule count, the matrix structure, and the cooling rate through the eutectoid in nodular iron. The chemical composition of the nodular iron was held constant while various inoculation methods, inoculants, and mold designs, including chills, were used to vary the solidification time and cooling rate through the eutectoid range. This produced variations in both the matrix structure and the nodule count.

The nodule count has a power relationship with the percent pearlite in the matrix at fixed cooling rates: Percent pearlite = K (Nodule count)-n where the …

Two-Dimensional Radiant Interchange In A Non-Isothermal Cavity Formed By Two Semi-Infinite Parallel Plates., Robert David Allen Jan 1974

Two-Dimensional Radiant Interchange In A Non-Isothermal Cavity Formed By Two Semi-Infinite Parallel Plates., Robert David Allen

Masters Theses

"Two-dimensional radiant interchange between non-isothermal, gray diffuse surfaces with non-uniform radiosity have been investigated for a cavity formed by two semi-infinite parallel plates. The problem is solved for two specific emissive power distribution models. Both emissive power distributions decay exponentially with depth into the cavity. The first emissive power distribution varies in a cosine manner across the front of the plates and the second has a step variation across the front of the plates.

For the cosine varying model, separation of variables and Ambarzumian's method are applied to obtain an integro-differential equation for the radiosity inside the cavity, an integral …

Development Of A Four Channel Cloud Nucleus Spectrometer., Larry Allan Brunner Jan 1974

Development Of A Four Channel Cloud Nucleus Spectrometer., Larry Allan Brunner

Masters Theses

"A four-channel vertical flow thermal diffusion chamber for use as a cloud nucleus counter is described. The droplets in each channel are photographically counted. The instrument provides about 20 seconds of available growth time, which enables better distinction of active droplets than does ii the conventional horizontal chamber. Droplet growth calculations show that the uncertainty in droplet count due to limited available growth time is negligible for supersaturations above 0.3% but increases rapidly as the supersaturation is lowered below 0.3%. For example, at 0.1% supersaturation, the uncertainty is -27% to +38% in the drop count. The possible error in supersaturation …

Thermal Fragmentation Of Rock - The Influence Of Temperature Dependent Material Properties., James Dale Scheller Jan 1974

Thermal Fragmentation Of Rock - The Influence Of Temperature Dependent Material Properties., James Dale Scheller

Masters Theses

"This investigation is concerned with a thermal rock fragmentation system employing heat to create subsurface thermal inclusions. The effectiveness of this system as applied to three different rock types is studied. The rock types are Dresser basalt, Charcoal gray granite, and Sioux quartzite. Also, the influence of temperature dependent material properties is investigated.

The actual three-dimensional problem of in situ rock fragmentation involves parallel rows of equally spaced holes drilled to a constant depth. A heat source at the bottom of each hole creates a thermal inclusion resulting in a stress field causing fracture.

Axisymmetric models of the fragmentation system …

Post Irradiation Changes Of The Elastic Modulus Of Aluminum, Dale A. Powers Jan 1974

Post Irradiation Changes Of The Elastic Modulus Of Aluminum, Dale A. Powers

Masters Theses

"Aluminum samples of 99.99% and 99.999% purity were irradiated to neutron fluences of 3·8·1018 nvt and 1.4·1019 nvt (E greater than 0.1 Mev) at one-third of the melting temperature. The change in Young's modulus of elasticity after isothermal annealing in the temperature range of 110⁰C to 130⁰C was measured. After 2.5 hours of annealing, the modulus reached a steady state value which was decreased by 0.25% ± 0.17% from the unannealed value. Electron microscopy suggests the hardening mechanisms were dispersion hardening by silicon precipitates and void hardening"--Abstract, page ii.

Combined Forced And Free Convection On A Vertical Cylinder And Flat Plate, Aleksandros Mucoglu Jan 1974

Combined Forced And Free Convection On A Vertical Cylinder And Flat Plate, Aleksandros Mucoglu

Masters Theses

"In the study of fluid flow over heated surfaces, it is customary to neglect the effects of buoyancy force when the flow is horizontal. However, such a practice is not justified when the forced flow is along an inclined or a vertical surface, because under these conditions the buoyancy force modifies considerably the flow field and hence the heat transfer rate from the surface. Such a flow is termed combined forced and free convective flow.

The present study is concerned with the effects of buoyancy force on forced convection along an isothermal vertical cylinder and a flat plate. This type …

An Investigation Of The Vertical Distribution Of Sulfur Forms In Surface Mine Spoils, Henry County, Missouri, Walter Carter Von Demfange Jr. Jan 1974

An Investigation Of The Vertical Distribution Of Sulfur Forms In Surface Mine Spoils, Henry County, Missouri, Walter Carter Von Demfange Jr.

Masters Theses

"Samples of material in the spoil banks left by surface coal mining operations in Henry County Missouri were taken from various depths and preserved to prevent further oxidation of the pyrite in the samples. Quantitative determinations were then made for sulfate and sulfide sulfur. It was shown that near the surface the sulfide sulfur concentrations were much lower than those at greater depth while sulfate concentrations were higher near the surface than at depth. Since this is probably the effect of years of oxidation of the pyrite, it can be used to show at what depth the pyrite is being …

A Systems Approach To Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Training Programs, Jesse Michael Haverstick Jan 1974

A Systems Approach To Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Training Programs, Jesse Michael Haverstick

Masters Theses

"The evaluation of the effectiveness of training programs has long been recognized as a necessity in determining the allocation of investment. However, much of industry, today, still does not use an easily administered, systematic, and reliable method for determining training program effectiveness for their salaried (managerial) personnel. It is easily seen that determining training program effectiveness is not a one-shot, one-time event, but a continual process, whose aim, ultimately, is increased productivity. For the effectiveness of a training program to be adequately monitored, these four areas should be measured: (1) trainee attitude, (2) learning, (3) behavior change, and (4) productivity …

Calculation Of The Neutron Flux In The Side Regions Of The Prestressed Concrete Reactor Vessel Of A High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor, Richard Robert Kent Jr. Jan 1974

Calculation Of The Neutron Flux In The Side Regions Of The Prestressed Concrete Reactor Vessel Of A High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor, Richard Robert Kent Jr.

Masters Theses

"Neutron flux in the side regions of the High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor's (HTGR) Prestressed Concrete Reactor Vessel (PCRV) was determined using the Monte Carlo method. One quarter of the PCRV was modeled, with all major structures inside it, e.g. steam generator, auxiliary cooling loop, etc. imaged at their exact position and size. Initial neutron energies range from .001 eV to 3 MeV. Three neutron interactions were considered: absorbtion, elastic scattering, and inelastic scattering.

The flux was calculated for two different PCRV temperatures, 155° F and 647° F. The thermal flux showed a minor increase at the higher temperature. In …

Possible Damage Mechanism In Dresden 2 Class Boiling Water Reactor Fuel, Donald Lee Moffett Jan 1974

Possible Damage Mechanism In Dresden 2 Class Boiling Water Reactor Fuel, Donald Lee Moffett

Masters Theses

"A thermal hydraulic analysis of a typical hot channel of a Dresden 2 class boiling water reactor is studied for possible severe local overheating. The COBRA-II thermal hydraulic analysis code is modified to include critical heat flux calculations for each subchannel. The effects of flow distribution, inlet mass velocity variations, dimensional tolerances, enrichment variations, and input parameters are examined in detail. Bulk channel results are in good agreement with the published data, but the assembly wall side of the corner fuel rod has a minimum critical heat flux ratio of less than unity for a number of the situations examined. …
