Small Laser-Textured Dimples For Improved Tribological Performance Of Cocrmo In Artificial Hip Joints, William B. Bennett, Min Zou

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study investigates the impact of small dimples on the tribological properties of CoCrMo (CCM) surfaces. Laser-ablated textures with 5 mu m diameter dimples were fabricated at varying aspect ratios (0.1, 0.2, 0.3) and surface densities (5%, 15%, 25%) to evaluate their effects on friction and wear when paired with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) counterfaces. The results showed that small dimples significantly reduced and stabilized the coefficient of friction (CoF) and wear compared to untextured CCM and larger dimples as reported in the literature. The texture configuration with a 5% surface density and 0.1 aspect ratio achieved the best …

Design And Characterization Of Radiation-Hardened Gaas Hbt-Based Optical Transceivers, Collin Burt

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Optical transceivers are desirable for their galvanic isolation and natural immunity to electromagnetic interference compared with direct electrical connections. This is true in normal operating environments as well as radiation environments. This work realizes and characterizes GaAs HBT-based optical transceivers across temperature and a range of radiation environments including high dose rate, total ionizing dose, neutron, and heavy ion. The transceiver designs are discussed and specific environmental design considerations are highlighted. Final results for each environment are provided and compared with existing transceivers.

Experimental Investigation Of External Flow Condensation Heat Transfer In Horizontal Tube-In-Tube Configuration, Jiayuan Li, Jayachandran K. Narayanan, Chirag R. Kharangate

Faculty Scholarship

Flow condensation is an important process used to achieve heat rejection across thermal power and energy systems. Studies on tube condensation have concentrated on the condensing fluid flowing in the inner tube. However, common heat exchanger configurations like the shell-and-tube types see the condensing fluid on the outer surface of the tubes. To address this gap, in this study, we investigate the local and channel-averaged heat transfer characteristics of flow condensation happening on the exterior of a horizontal tube in the tube-in-tube configuration. An external flow condensation module is developed and tested to obtain heat transfer and flow visualization data, …

A Novel Robotic Pedaling Paradigm To Improve Lower Limb Movement Post-Stroke, Tom S. Ruopp Apr 2025

A Novel Robotic Pedaling Paradigm To Improve Lower Limb Movement Post-Stroke, Tom S. Ruopp

Dissertations (1934 -)

Prior work in our lab revealed that while impaired paretic neuromuscular output contributes to movement difficulties post-stroke, compensation is more related to interlimb coordination (ILC) deficits. Specifically, ILC deficits were revealed in the context of lower limb split-crank pedaling. Participants who demonstrated larger levels of compensation during a conventional, solid-crank pedaling task also demonstrated larger deficits in ILC i.e. maintaining a 180-degree phase relationship during split-crank. To address this deficit, our lab created a novel, split-crank pedaling robot named CUped. CUped (pronounced Cupid) is so called because it compels use of the paretic limb during a movement that resembles pedaling. …

Impact Of Delayed Artificial Aging On Tensile Properties And Microstructural Evolution Of Directed Energy Deposited Scalmalloy®, Rachel Boillat-Newport, Sriram Praneeth Isanaka, Frank Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Scalmalloy® is a novel alloy designed to work with the unique processing inherent in additive manufacturing (AM). This alloy is post-processed using a single artificial aging treatment rather than a multistep heat treatment, as often noted in traditional manufacturing processes. Much of the literature details the impact of direct aging treatments around the temperature and time recommended by the manufacturer, 325 °C for 4 h; however, few studies have explored the impact of delayed artificial aging on the resulting mechanical and microstructural behavior. This study explored this missing link and determined the impact that the time between the fabrication of …

Explainable And Reduced-Feature Machine Learning Models For Shape And Drag Prediction Of A Freely Moving Drop In The Sub-Critical Weber Number Regime, Md Amanullah Kabir Tonmoy Apr 2025

Explainable And Reduced-Feature Machine Learning Models For Shape And Drag Prediction Of A Freely Moving Drop In The Sub-Critical Weber Number Regime, Md Amanullah Kabir Tonmoy

Theses and Dissertations

Accurately predicting the shape and drag of a moving drop is crucial in many spray applications. However, due to the complex interaction between the drag force and drop shape deformation, accurate prediction of drop shape and drag from Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation requires large computational resources and time. A novel data-driven approach using NARXNN (Non-linear Auto Regressive eXogenous input Neural Network) is proposed in this study, which recurrently predicts the drop shape and drag for a given Weber number (We) and Reynolds number (Re), in the sub-critical We regime where there is no drop breakup. The average error in …

Electrochemical Hydrogen Pump – Methods To Combat Co Poisoning, Neha Namburi Apr 2025

Electrochemical Hydrogen Pump – Methods To Combat Co Poisoning, Neha Namburi

ENGR 310: Technical Writing Final Project

As global demand for hydrogen grows, both as a clean energy carrier and an industrial fuel, electrochemical hydrogen pumps (EHPs) are gaining attention for their ability to separate and compress hydrogen efficiently. EHPs work by selectively drawing hydrogen from low-pressure hydrogen gas mixtures and electrochemically converting it into high-purity, high-pressure hydrogen. EHPs are particularly useful for purifying hydrogen from industrial byproducts like syngas, an industrial mixture containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide (CO). However, CO binds to the platinum catalyst used in EHPs and reduces its effectiveness – a problem known as catalyst poisoning.

This literature review explores a range of …

Faculty Publications

Structural batteries, also known as “massless batteries”, integrate energy storage directly into load-bearing materials, offering a transformative alternative to traditional Li-ion batteries. Unlike conventional systems that serve only as energy storage devices, structural batteries replace passive structural components, reducing overall weight while providing mechanical reinforcement. However, achieving uniform and efficient coatings of active materials on carbon fibers remains a major challenge, limiting their scalability and electrochemical performance. This study investigates ultrasonic spray coating as a precise and scalable technique for fabricating composite cathodes in structural batteries. Using a computer-controlled ultrasonic nozzle, this method ensures uniform deposition with minimal material waste …

Hybrid Machine Learning And Comparison Error Minimization For Frequency Domain-Based Rapid State Estimation In Structures Subjected To High-Rate Boundary Change, James Scheppegrell

Theses and Dissertations

Dynamic forces and evolving structural boundary conditions pose challenges for various structural systems such as aircraft, orbital infrastructure, and energy harvesting devices. The design, evaluation, and functionality, of such systems can be aided through the collection and analysis of data. However, real-time decision-making for systems experiencing high-rate changes can pose unique challenges, if assessments are to be made accurately and rapidly enough to be relevant. In cases where the systems are well-defined and thoroughly understood, monitoring the frequency response can be instrumental in determining the state of structures subjected to high-rate structural boundary condition changes. This study focuses on investigating …
