Gas Analysis By Absorption, Albert D. Mcmahon May 1941

Gas Analysis By Absorption, Albert D. Mcmahon

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

There is practically only one method of gas analysis. This was worked out many years ago by Bunsen, Hempel, and Winkler and consists in the successive absorption with different chemicals of the various constituents of the gas. The only improvement to this method is the oxidation and combustion of different components of a mixture followed by absorption.

Pegmatites In Southwestern Montana, Ora Rostad May 1941

Pegmatites In Southwestern Montana, Ora Rostad

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Little has been written on pegmatites in Montana except in conjunction with reports on mining districts. This subject was chosen as a senior thesis to see what facts could be ascertained regarding pegmatites alone, and an attempt has been made by the writer to assemble all written material on pegmatites in southwestern Montana, and to study specimens from those that could be reached or from which specimens were available.

Solubility Of Glass Tank Refractories Using A Small Electrically Heated Furnace, James Vincent Heddell Jan 1941

Solubility Of Glass Tank Refractories Using A Small Electrically Heated Furnace, James Vincent Heddell

Bachelors Theses

"This investigation was undertaken to study the refractory blocks used in glass furnaces - their relation with the molten glass. It was decided to employ for this examination a model glass tank, heated by electrical carborundum resistors known as Globars. Experimental glass tanks have been constructed using fuel oil or gas to obtain the required heat to perform melting. These fuels were used mainly to simulate commercial practice and thus to obtain results which could be easily applied to industrial furnaces. The design of a model electric tank is included as part of this investigation"--Purpose of the Investigation, page 4-5.

The Investigation Of Different Variables In The Assaying Of Silver Cyanide Solution, Warren M. Mahan May 1940

The Investigation Of Different Variables In The Assaying Of Silver Cyanide Solution, Warren M. Mahan

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The assaying of gold and silver cyanide solutions is by no means new. The first method of analysis which is given in the literature is an evaporation method by S. B. Christy in 1896. However, the fire assaying of gold and silver dates further back than this. There is a method of fire assaying for gold and silver given in literature as early as 1556 in Georgius, Agricola’s De Re Metallica book.

Areal Geology Of The Post-Paleozoic Surface Of The Northwest Plains, William M. Broderick May 1940

Areal Geology Of The Post-Paleozoic Surface Of The Northwest Plains, William M. Broderick

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Probably most of the area included in this report has been examined to some extent by oil geologists, and most, if not all, of the important domes have been discovered and surveyed thoroughly. In parts of the area, the bedrock is covered by glacial drift or alluvium material, but it is reasonable to believe that no new domal structure will be found. This means that surface examination alone will be insufficient in locating new oil fields, so future prospecting will be dependent, to a great extent, on studies of sub-surface stratigraphy.

The Effect Of Addition Agents In Grinding Portland Cement Clinker, Eugene Farrell Hill Jan 1940

The Effect Of Addition Agents In Grinding Portland Cement Clinker, Eugene Farrell Hill

Masters Theses

"In the dry grinding of most materials in a ball mill or similar apparatus, a degree of fineness is eventually reached when a noticeable decrease in the efficiency of grinding occurs. The degree of fineness where this phenomenon occurs, as measured by the specific surface of the material being ground, varies greatly with different materials. The accompanying effect in all cases, however, is the formation of a coating upon the balls; this coating in the case of cement adheres tightly to the balls and increases in thickness as grinding progresses after the initial "coating' fineness has been reached. Usually an …

Fifty Years Of Achievement In Agricultural Investigation, R. T. Prescott Mar 1939

Fifty Years Of Achievement In Agricultural Investigation, R. T. Prescott

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

In Nebraska, a hustling frontier state in 1887, the legislature hesitated not at all in taking advantage of the provisions of the Hatch Act, and now that fifty years have elapsed since the Station was founded, seventy-five years since the Land Grant College Act was passed and the U. S. Department of Agriculture established, and almost twenty-five years since the Agricultural Extension Service was added, it seems worth while to present a general summary of achievement within the state. The main object will be to show some of the important things that have been learned through the investigations of the …

Organization Of Geophysical Parties For Foreign Exploration, Charles Howard Dresbach Jan 1939

Organization Of Geophysical Parties For Foreign Exploration, Charles Howard Dresbach

Professional Degree Theses

"Special conditions encountered in much foreign work make it necessary to consider many factors which are not encountered in domestic programs of geophysical exploration for oil. Although extremely difficult working conditions are frequently met in domestic operations by company and contract crews, the large store of past experience, the availability of fresh supplies, replacement or new equipment, and the proximity of the helpful home office make their surmountal more or less a matter of routine. Contrariwise, foreign operations are frequently conducted under much more difficult conditions, supplies and equipment can be secured only after long and costly delays, and the …

Hydrography Of The Larger Springs Of The Ozark Region Of Missouri, Warwick Lewis Doll Jan 1938

Hydrography Of The Larger Springs Of The Ozark Region Of Missouri, Warwick Lewis Doll

Professional Degree Theses

"This thesis is based upon a study of the larger springs of the Ozark Region of Missouri and is designed to answer many requests for information about the large springs.

Special studies were made to determine the probable location and approximate area of the drainage areas of the large springs (previous writers have referred to the drainage areas as being “very large" or "enormous", apparently, without any very definite idea as to the extent or the drainage areas). The average run-off per square mile from the assumed drainage area, herein called the "spring factor", was determined for the largest springs. …

The Sorption Of Metallic Ions By Wood Pulp During Purification, Harold Edgar Boyd Jan 1938

The Sorption Of Metallic Ions By Wood Pulp During Purification, Harold Edgar Boyd

Masters Theses

"The cost of producing cellulose acetate, and the difficulties attending its dissolving, plasticizing, and application to specific uses are problems which must be investigated before the ultimate commercial development of the material can be realized. The price of the cellulose used as raw material for acetylation is one of the primary factors influencing the cost of the finished product. At present, cotton linters constitutes the chief practical souce [sic] of acetate, being almost pure alpha-cellulose, and cheaper than staple cotton, our other source of high alpha-cellulose, Wood pulp is the only other material offering promise as a substitute for cotton, …

Occurrence And Origin Of Placer Gold In Montana, John K. Halse May 1935

Occurrence And Origin Of Placer Gold In Montana, John K. Halse

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

From time immemorial man has used gold as a medium of exchange, a measure of value, as jewelry and for ornamentation. Placer gold has led directly or indirectly to the settlement of lands, California and Alaska being the two best known examples. It has led the way to the discovery of other important mineral wealth, the discovery of the copper and silver deposits at Butte, Montana and the discovery of the silver deposits at Cripple Creek, Colorado being two good examples.

My interest in the field of physics being that of electricity, I have been permitted to pursue this thesis in the field of thermionics.

The thermionic tube is one of vital importance not only in the field of radiotelegraphy and radiotelephony, but is of great value in the field of engineering and a vast asset in university and college laboratories. In fact, its advent has opened up a new era in many fields. H. J. Van Bijl terms is a "versatile talking bottle." In a paper of this nature only the important features can be stressed, and even here much …

Problems Encountered In The Development Of An Airport, A. H. Armstrong Jun 1932

Problems Encountered In The Development Of An Airport, A. H. Armstrong

Theses

The progress of a nation and. its transportation facilities have always advanced hand in hand.

Just as it has always beerthe Civil Engineer's problem to develop facilities for other means of transportation, such as roads, harbors, and. railroad terminals, so is it his problem today to build airports.

In presenting the problems encountered in the development of an airport, the writer has considered the airport's place in city and regional planning, as well as the part it plays in air transportation.

An expression of thanks is given to Mr. Wm. S. La Londe, Jr., professor in Civil Engineering at the …

Fundamentals Of Bridge Design, Albert C. Kalmbach May 1932

Fundamentals Of Bridge Design, Albert C. Kalmbach

Bachelors’ Theses

Man's earliest communication followed: water routes. Our prehistoric ancestors, evidence shows, fashioned boats and rafts which enabled them to travel along the rivers, and later to sail the seas. Following history through the years we will find man always developing theater routes for transportation before other methods. The early colonies in our America were along the coastal rivers; the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys were first settled in the interior.
