Calculation Of The Neutron Flux In The Side Regions Of The Prestressed Concrete Reactor Vessel Of A High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor, Richard Robert Kent Jr. Jan 1974

Calculation Of The Neutron Flux In The Side Regions Of The Prestressed Concrete Reactor Vessel Of A High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor, Richard Robert Kent Jr.

Masters Theses

"Neutron flux in the side regions of the High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor's (HTGR) Prestressed Concrete Reactor Vessel (PCRV) was determined using the Monte Carlo method. One quarter of the PCRV was modeled, with all major structures inside it, e.g. steam generator, auxiliary cooling loop, etc. imaged at their exact position and size. Initial neutron energies range from .001 eV to 3 MeV. Three neutron interactions were considered: absorbtion, elastic scattering, and inelastic scattering.

The flux was calculated for two different PCRV temperatures, 155° F and 647° F. The thermal flux showed a minor increase at the higher temperature. In …

Possible Damage Mechanism In Dresden 2 Class Boiling Water Reactor Fuel, Donald Lee Moffett Jan 1974

Possible Damage Mechanism In Dresden 2 Class Boiling Water Reactor Fuel, Donald Lee Moffett

Masters Theses

"A thermal hydraulic analysis of a typical hot channel of a Dresden 2 class boiling water reactor is studied for possible severe local overheating. The COBRA-II thermal hydraulic analysis code is modified to include critical heat flux calculations for each subchannel. The effects of flow distribution, inlet mass velocity variations, dimensional tolerances, enrichment variations, and input parameters are examined in detail. Bulk channel results are in good agreement with the published data, but the assembly wall side of the corner fuel rod has a minimum critical heat flux ratio of less than unity for a number of the situations examined. …

Vibration Characteristics Of Free Thin Cylindrical Shells, Floyd M. Cunningham, D. E. Leanhardt Jan 1974

Vibration Characteristics Of Free Thin Cylindrical Shells, Floyd M. Cunningham, D. E. Leanhardt

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper considers the flexural vibrations of free thin circular cylinders. A frequency equation is derived using free-free characteristic beam functions to represent the variation of mid-surface shell displacement components, u, v and w, with respect to the axial direction. Timoshenko strain-displacement relations for thin cylinders are used to determine elastic vibratory strain energy. Energy methods are applied to obtain the frequency equation and associated amplitude ratios for each of its roots. This energy solution is checked experimentally using a vibration exciter and numerically using the SABOR IV finite element program. With minor modification, the frequency equation conforms to the …

Performance Comparison Of Techniques For Obtaining Stereo Radar Images, George L. Bair, Gordon E. Carlson Jan 1974

Performance Comparison Of Techniques For Obtaining Stereo Radar Images, George L. Bair, Gordon E. Carlson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The performance of three stereo radar techniques is compared with respect to both theoretical performance and performance in the presence of errors. The three techniques are: an improved single flight technique, a previously proposed single flight technique, and a two flight technique. Theoretical data for comparison of image parameters affecting performance have been generated with computer simulations of the imaging geometries for the techniques. The comparison shows that the improved technique will have images with greater similarity resulting in improved stereo viewability and measurability. Computer simulations have also been used to generate sensitivities of computed terrain point coordinates to system …

Equalization Of Qpsk Data Transmission In Specular Multipath, Rodger E. Ziemer, C. R. Ryan Jan 1974

Equalization Of Qpsk Data Transmission In Specular Multipath, Rodger E. Ziemer, C. R. Ryan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper gives performance results for transversal-filter equalization of Quadri phase phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) signals with two-component multipath and demodulator phase error. An analytical expression for optimum, minimum mean-square-error tap weights in terms of the multipath and signal parameters is given. Probability of error results for no equalization and equalization with adaptive decision-feedback tap-weight adjustment are compared. The results show that significant improvement can be obtained with relatively simple equalizer structures. Copyright © 1974 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Kalman Filter Equalization For Qpsk Communications, Tze-Shen Lee Jan 1974

Kalman Filter Equalization For Qpsk Communications, Tze-Shen Lee

Doctoral Dissertations

"The discrete complex Kalman filter is considered as an equalizer for quadrature phase shift keyed (QPSK) systems in the presence of additive noise and intersymbol interference (ISI). For a known linear time-invariant channel with finite duration impulse response, the finite n-dimension complex Kalman filter equalizer is able to reduce the degradation caused by ISI. When the channel is unknown, an adaptive Kalman equalizer is used in which the channel complex tap gains are estimated by decision feedback. A two component multipath channel QPSK system is used as an example. Using the Chernoff upper bound to calculate the error probabilities, the …

Numerical Modeling Of The Early Stage Of Cloud Formation In A Simulation Chamber, Adel Nassif Saad Jan 1974

Numerical Modeling Of The Early Stage Of Cloud Formation In A Simulation Chamber, Adel Nassif Saad

Doctoral Dissertations

"A numerical model has been developed to simulate the growth of cloud droplets by condensation upon a spectrum of hygroscopic nuclei. The model is applicable to cloud simulation chamber conditions as well as to the study of the role of these nuclei on cloud base microstructure.

Equations are given for the growth by condensation of water vapor on a population of hygroscopic nuclei in a volume being cooled by expansion. The equations are integrated simultaneously, using Hamming's modified predictor-corrector method for given initial conditions, to obtain the droplet size distribution, temperature, pressure, supersaturation, and liquid water content. Temperature fluctuations, sedimentation …

Dynamics Of Interconnected Systems With Pulse Frequency Modulators, Halil Ozcan Gulcur Oct 1973

Dynamics Of Interconnected Systems With Pulse Frequency Modulators, Halil Ozcan Gulcur

Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to study the dynamics of systems consisting of interconnections of an arbitrary number of complete-reset pulse frequency modulators (CRPFM's) and linear dynamical subsystems (in general, time-varying, lumped and/or distributed). CRPFM, which represents a generalization of several types of pulse frequency modulators (PFM's), consists of two basic components; a multi-input dynamic element, called the timing-filter (TF) and a threshold device (TD). Whenever the output of the TF reaches a given threshold value the TD generates an impulse and, at the same time, resets all the states of the TF to zero. This dissertation is devoted …

Generalized Feedback Shift Register Pseudorandom Number Algorithm, Theodore Gyle Lewis, W. H. Payne Jul 1973

Generalized Feedback Shift Register Pseudorandom Number Algorithm, Theodore Gyle Lewis, W. H. Payne

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The generalized feedback shift register pseudorandom number algorithm has several advantages over all other pseudorandom number generators. These advantages are: (1) it produces multidimensional pseudorandom numbers; (2) it has an arbitrarily long period independent of the word size of the computer on which it is implemented; (3) it is faster than other pseudorandom number generators; (4) the "same" floating-point pseudorandom number sequence is obtained on any machine, that is, the high order mantissa bits of each pseudorandom number agree on all machines— examples are given for IBM 360, Sperry-Rand-Univac 1108, Control Data 6000, and Hewlett-Packard 2100 series computers; (5) it …

Remote Sensing Of Earth Resources System Capabilities V.S. Design Constraints, William Howard Grisham Jul 1973

Remote Sensing Of Earth Resources System Capabilities V.S. Design Constraints, William Howard Grisham

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

There is new evidence that global earth resources satellite net will be practical. This paper weighs recent advances in remote sensing to pinpoint the dominant constraints. The data and sensor systems interfacing requirements are critically reviewed. It is shown that conventional optics constraints can be relaxed, with the newer systems, based on multi-spectral imagery and statistical processing methods. The most powerful computational methods use algorithms based on a Gaussian assumption for the species vector in feature space, but biases in the imagery limit their efficiency. A rationale is proposed: improving the observational network calibrating efficiency will also improve the photogrammetric …

Dissertations

The objective of the research reported here is the design of efficient speech coders that can easily be implemented in integrated circuit hardware. Companding techniques like those introduced by M. R. Winkler, J. A. Greefkes, F. DeJager, A. Tomozawa and H. Kaneko were explored along with a large body of theory concerning the application of linear prediction to speech coding.

The best features of the speech signal to be measured and coded are the overall amplitude, the resonant frequencies and dampings of the vocal cavity and the fundamental frequency of the vocal cord oscillations. Adaptive quantization was used to track …

A Simulation Modeling Approach To Central City Dynamics, Leonard William Schaper Jr. Jun 1973

A Simulation Modeling Approach To Central City Dynamics, Leonard William Schaper Jr.

Dissertations

This dissertation describes a computer simulation model of a central city with emphasis on its application to Newark, New Jersey. The work begins with a review of the Forrester Urban Dynamics Model; the first attempt to simulate the entire system of the city. The objections to this model which have appeared in the literature are discussed, and the model is viewed in the light of other work in the field. A set of guidelines to aid the "second generation" model building effort is developed. The actual construction of a model which attempts to follow these guidelines is described. First, the …

The Photolysis Of Chlorobenzene In An Aqueous Environment, Louis John Del Tufo Jun 1973

The Photolysis Of Chlorobenzene In An Aqueous Environment, Louis John Del Tufo

Theses

Chlorobenzene was chosen as a model system for the study of photochemically induced reactions in an aqueous environment. It was the goal of this research to achieve a reaction system which best approximates conditions existing in the environment. To do this, a basic model system was established, and then the effect on the rate by various parameters was studied. These parameters, which included the presence of oxygen and such inorganic compounds as might be present in receiving waters, (e.g. nitrate, sulfate, and phosphate), were chosen so as to meet the goal of this research.

Kinetic data was obtained for seven …

The Theoretical Distribution Of Forces In The Rigid Component Of The Buccal Arch Positioner, Dennis H. Teruya Jun 1973

The Theoretical Distribution Of Forces In The Rigid Component Of The Buccal Arch Positioner, Dennis H. Teruya

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The distribution of an applied force to the rigid component of the Buccal Arch Positioner was determined with a theoretically formulated model. The rigid component was assumed to be a free body without the semi-rigid attachments and was evaluated at four points for the force distribution. The summation of the forces and the moments were equated to zero and were utilized to derive equations to solve for the unknown forces. The unknown forces at each point of the rigid component were solved for in terms of the given force applications.

A laterally directed force application at one of the posterior …

Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports

The EMISARI System described in this paper represents a major departure from conventional MIS design. It is oriented not toward data per se, but rather toward activities of the people who generate and use the data. Thus it provides not merely for reporting up the chain of command, but also for dissemination of policy guidance and reference material down the chain, and for lateral communication among all users. It places a premium upon flexibility, to permit rapid system modifications in response to changes in user functions and needs and it offers a greatly simplified operation, to avoid any necessity for …

Measurement Of Reynolds Stress And Turbulence In Dilute Polymer Solution By Laser Velocimeter, Samuel E. Logan Jan 1973

Measurement Of Reynolds Stress And Turbulence In Dilute Polymer Solution By Laser Velocimeter, Samuel E. Logan

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Measurements of Reynolds stress and axial and transverse turbulence intensities have been made in turbulent pipe flow of a dilute solution of high molecular weight polymer and compared to measurements made with pure water. A laser velocimeter capable of measuring these turbulence parameters has been developed and utilized.

Axial turbulence intensities are consistent in behavior and magnitude with previous polymer results and the measurements of transverse intensity and Reynolds stress are similarly well behaved and self consistent. Sublayer thickening in drag reducing polymer solution is observed, in consonance with earlier work. New results include demonstration that the turbulent shearing stress …

Measurements In Turbulent Water And Two-Phase Flows By Laser Anemometry, A. Melling, J. H. Whitelaw Jan 1973

Measurements In Turbulent Water And Two-Phase Flows By Laser Anemometry, A. Melling, J. H. Whitelaw

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Measurements of the mean and rms values of the longitudinal velocity in a rectangular duct are reported. These results were obtained in a water flow using a laser anemometer. The important design criteria which facilitated the measurements are described and gradient, transit-time, noise and refractive-index corrections are specifically discussed. The results demonstrate the development of a rectangular duct flow and, in particular, reveal that a small lack of symmetry at the duct entrance can readily be identified in the normal- stress results, 37 hydraulic diameters downstream.

The possibility of utilizing water droplets in steam and gas bubbles in water to …

Features Of A Separating Turbulent Boundary Layer As Revealed By Laser And Hot-Film Anemometry, R. L. Simpson, J. H. Strickland, P. W. Barr Jan 1973

Features Of A Separating Turbulent Boundary Layer As Revealed By Laser And Hot-Film Anemometry, R. L. Simpson, J. H. Strickland, P. W. Barr

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Experiments have been performed to determine the fundamental nature of boundary layer separation produced by an adverse pressure gradient. Measurements upstream and downstream of the separation zone have been made utilizing laser and hot-film anemometry techniques.

A completely mobile backscattering laser anemometer was developed. This alone is a significant development because of the relatively long focal lengths required for measurements in a 36" wide wind tunnel. Signal processing was achieved by a digital signal sampling and storage system. Both mean and fluctuating velocities in both the unseparated and separated flow regions were measured. Experimental results are in fairly good agreement …
