Generalized Correlations For Molecular Weight And Concentration Dependence Of Zero-Shear Viscosity Of High Polymer Solutions., J. L. Zakin, R. Wu, H. Luh, Kenneth G. Mayhan

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Results of a study are presented which show that two correlations of viscosity-concentration data are useful representations for data over wide ranges of mol. wt and up to at least moderately high concentrations for both good and fair solvents. Low mol. wt polymer solutions (below the critical entanglement mol. wt M//c) generally have higher viscosities than predicted by the correlations. One correlation is eta //s//p/c left bracket eta right bracket versus k prime left bracket eta right bracket c, where eta //s//p is specific viscosity, c is polymer concentration, left bracket eta right bracket is intrinsic viscosity, and k prime …

Detection In Image Dependent Noise, David R. Cunningham, Robert D. Laramore, Eamon Barrett Jan 1976

Detection In Image Dependent Noise, David R. Cunningham, Robert D. Laramore, Eamon Barrett

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The detection of two-dimensional optical signals which have been corrupted by noise is considered. Discussion is limited to the detection of a known object in a known location. The problem is approached from the classical statistical technique of hypothesis testing. Initially the solution is formulated in very general terms. The decision rule is derived for a signal distorted by noise of an unspecified type which may include signal dependent noise. Once the decision rule is obtained, the probabilities of false alarm and detection are evaluated from a priori knowledge of the noise and imaging system. The general results are applied …

Optimal Process Overdesign With A Flowsheet Simulator, Frank Joseph Doering

Doctoral Dissertations

"Overdesign is applied to chemical processes to include additional equipment for improved process reliability or to account for deviations from average conditions. An efficient method to optimize the overdesign of a complex chemical process is developed for use on a flowsheet simulation program. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated by simulating the sulfuric acid process with metallurgical feed gas on the flowsheet program PROPS. The process is optimized for reliable and variable performance by the adaptive random search algorithm"-- Abstract, p. xi

Non-Cash Incentives And Worker Motivation, Daniel Franklin Cole Jan 1976

Non-Cash Incentives And Worker Motivation, Daniel Franklin Cole

Masters Theses

"A problem of growing concern in the United States deals with the poor results of the nation's businesses in terms of productivity. The U.S. is now suffering the worst decline in productivity in a generation. While part of this decline can be attributed to economic conditions, data indicates that the labor force could be more productive if it wanted to do so. A study has shown that 52% of all workers feel they aren't producing at full capacity. Alienation of the American worker is identified as one of the most important contributors to this problem.

Because it is often difficult …

Anion Grain-Boundary Diffusion In Soidum Chloride, K. S. Sabharwal, J. Mimkes, Manfred Wuttig Dec 1975

Anion Grain-Boundary Diffusion In Soidum Chloride, K. S. Sabharwal, J. Mimkes, Manfred Wuttig

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The grain-boundary diffusion of 131I in Harshaw pure and Ca-doped NaCl was investigated in the temperature range between 430 and 560°C. The Arrhenius plot of the grain-boundary diffusivity parameter Dδ displays a marked dip at around 510°C. It is proposed that this dip is due to a phase transformation occurring at the grain boundary, possibly calcium segregation.

Planned Reduction In Electrical Energy Use In Nashville - Davidson County, Tennessee: A Preliminary Assessment, Barry D. Lichter, William F. Flanagan, Robert S. Goodrich, James K. Sebenius, C. Paul Beach

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

An assessment was carried out of the impacts of the various alternative strategies designed to reduce the rate of electrical energy use in the Nashville-Davidson County area, in the light of a potential crisis in supply. Seven strategies were identified among the major categories of voluntary reduction, price regulation, and mandatory reduction. Thirty-three sub-sectors were identified among residential, commercial and industrial users, and the consequences of imposing the strategies were assessed using a cross-impact matrix. The value of the methodology as an aid to public policy formulation lies in its possible extension to allow direct participation of various affected publics.

A Combined Digital-Analog Tracker For Terrestrial Applications, Ronald C. Durbin, Jack L. Boone, Frank J. Kern Oct 1975

A Combined Digital-Analog Tracker For Terrestrial Applications, Ronald C. Durbin, Jack L. Boone, Frank J. Kern

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

A combined Digital-Analog Tracker is suggested to allow maximum efficiency in a solar-electrical energy converter, utilizing a twelve-foot parabolic collector. The analog tracker compares solar beam radiation to ambient (diffuse) light to obtain optimum placement of the collector when the sun is visible. The digital portion of the tracker utilizes a wired program which derives information on solar position from a non-volatile random-access semiconductor memory. This arrangement allows accurate mapping of the sun even when the sun is obscured by atmospheric phenomena which would make mapping impossible.

The Conservation Of Human Resources In Energy Systems, Burns E. Hegler, James D. Hoag Oct 1975

The Conservation Of Human Resources In Energy Systems, Burns E. Hegler, James D. Hoag

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The operation of an energy system often requires that its personnel engage in manual and technical activities that involve exposure to health and safety hazards. A typical electric utility is used as a model for studying the operation of safety and health programs for energy systems. Specific criteria regarding standards and management are presented and discussed. These criteria are general enough so that they may be applied in the management of future energy systems.

An Investigation Of The Criteria Controlling Sustained Self-Excited Oscillations Of Cylinders In Flowing Water, R. King

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

In this paper, water channel experimental data are discussed and compared with conventional wind-tunnel data. Stability criteria are proposed for the cross-flow and flow directions of oscillation. Fluctuating drag force coefficients are deduced from a linear mathematical representation of the cylinder located in flowing water and oscillating in the flow direction.

Measurement Of The Low-Wavenumber Component Of Turbulent Boundary Layer Pressure Spectral Density, P. W. Jameson Sep 1975

Measurement Of The Low-Wavenumber Component Of Turbulent Boundary Layer Pressure Spectral Density, P. W. Jameson

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

This paper describes an experiment in which the turbulent boundary layer (TBL) over a flat plate excites bending waves in that plate predominantly through low-wavenumber components in the pressure field having the same wavenumber as the bending waves of the plate. The plate design is such that contributions to the bending waves from the convective peak of the TBL pressure and from acoustic noise are minimal. The level of response of individual modes of the plate is used to measure the intensity of these low-wavenumber spectral components in the TBL wall pressure.

This paper is a selective review of small group experiments in the area of the relationship between communication (modes, structures, processes) and group decision-making or problem solving. There are literally hundreds of these experiments; the purpose of this effort has been to isolate and summarize the results of those experimental traditions which may have the most bearing upon:

  1. our understanding of the probable social effects of computer conferencing as a communication mode;
  2. the identification of possible experiments utilizing computer conferencing which appear to be potentially most fruitful in terms of evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of computer conferencing in facilitating …

The Physical Background For Hot-Film Anemometry, G. Comte-Bellot Sep 1975

The Physical Background For Hot-Film Anemometry, G. Comte-Bellot

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

Thin film probes have been used for more than a decade to investigate turbulence, mostly in liquids. Many improvements have been achieved in the technique. Some problems still remain, however, so that the use of hot-film anemometers is not as straightforward as would be expected at a time when numerous ready-to-use probes and associated electronic equipment are commercially available. The following points should be discussed: aerodynamic perturbation caused by the probes, direct experimental check of the frequency response of constant temperature anemometers in the case of small fluctuations, dynamic non-linear behavior of constant temperature anemometers and heat transfer from hot …

This comprehensive specification document is much harder to utilize for learning the system than …

Steady State Fluidics: The Static Matching Of Fluidic Amplifiers And Loads, Frank J. Redd Aug 1975

Steady State Fluidics: The Static Matching Of Fluidic Amplifiers And Loads, Frank J. Redd

Theses and Dissertations

"Fluidics" is the title applied to a relatively new technology which is concerned with the control of fluid power and the processing of information through the use of the fluid mechanical properties of the fluid medium itself. The absence of moving parts and the relatively low sensitivity to enviromental conditions suggest the probability that fluidic systems will prove to be faster and more reliable than the mechanically controlled (valves, diaphragms, springs, etc.) fluid systems which they are designed to replace.

A Preliminary Study Of The Thermodynamic Limitations Of The Nrtl/Lemf Equations, Robert Petrie Jun 1975

A Preliminary Study Of The Thermodynamic Limitations Of The Nrtl/Lemf Equations, Robert Petrie

Theses

Analytical evaluations of the second and third derivatives of the molar Gibbs energy of mixing for the NRTL/LEMF equations indicate distinct zones of miscible and inmiscible prediction.

These calculations for a number of different α's have produced approximate miscibility limits for both NRTL/LEMF energy parameters and infinite dilution activity coefficients of a given system.

The Thermal Dehydration Of Magnesium Sulfate Hexahydrate (Mgso3.6h2o) And Magnesium Sulfite Trihydrate (Mgso3.3h2o), Raafat F. Abdel-Malek Jun 1975

The Thermal Dehydration Of Magnesium Sulfate Hexahydrate (Mgso3.6h2o) And Magnesium Sulfite Trihydrate (Mgso3.3h2o), Raafat F. Abdel-Malek

Theses

The thermal dehydration of MgSO3.3H2O and MgSO3.6H2O have been studied by differential thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis.

Similar studies by other groups led to contradictory conclusions. In this investigation, these results were reconciled and it was concluded that MgSO3.6H2O, under equilibrium conditions, dehydrates in two steps through the intermediate formation of MgSO3.3H2O.

One consequence of this work is the development of a simple analytical procedure, using TGA, for the quantitative determination of both hydrates in mixtures and in the presence …
