Dynamic Shear Modulus Of Soft Silt, H. Y. Fang, R. C. Chaney, N. S. Pandit
Dynamic Shear Modulus Of Soft Silt, H. Y. Fang, R. C. Chaney, N. S. Pandit
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
This paper presents the geotechnical properties of soft silt obtained from the Greater Shanghai Region of the People's Republic of China. Fundamental correlations of shear modulus, damping ratio, shear stress, shear strain with varying consolidation pressures are determined in the laboratory by cyclic simple shear tests. A comparison is made between laboratory test results, in situ cross-hole test results and the building code data proposed by the Shanghai Municipal Bureau. Finally, a comparison of the laboratory data on Shanghai silt with other published data on sands and clays is presented and discussed.
Uniform Cycles In Earthquakes: A Statistical Study, A. Haldar
Uniform Cycles In Earthquakes: A Statistical Study, A. Haldar
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
In the evaluation of soil behavior due to earthquake motions, uniform intensity load cycles are frequently used instead of irregular-patterned loadings generated during actual earthquakes. A statistical conversion procedure is discussed in this paper based on results available in the literature. The actual irregular stress-time history produced by an earthquake can be represented by uniform amplitude cyclic stresses, although there may be considerable uncertainty associated with them. The statistical relationship proposed here between the earthquake magnitude and the equivalent uniform stress cycles is somewhat different from the relationship commonly used in practice. It is observed in this study that this …
Field Correlation Of Soil Liquefaction With Spt And Grain Size, K. Tokimatsu, Y. Yoshimi
Field Correlation Of Soil Liquefaction With Spt And Grain Size, K. Tokimatsu, Y. Yoshimi
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Two earthquakes of magnitudes 6.7 and 7.4 that occurred in 1978 off the Pacific coast of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, provided field liquefaction data for a fairly wide range of peak ground surface acceleration from 100 to 290 gal. The range of SPT N-values was also fairly wide because special efforts were made to collect non-liquefaction data in addition to liquefaction data. Dynamic shear stress ratios adjusted for earthquake magnitudes and effective overburden pressures are plotted against N-values adjusted for effective overburden pressures. The field data are compared with two methods proposed recently, one by Seed and the other by Iwasaki …
Comparative Studies Of Soil Liquefaction Potential During The 1970 Peru Earthquake, A. Carrillo-Gil
Comparative Studies Of Soil Liquefaction Potential During The 1970 Peru Earthquake, A. Carrillo-Gil
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
A brief evaluation is made of research conducted to determine liquefaction potential for the sandy soils along the coastal areas of Peru, which present such characteristics that make them susceptible for development of this particular phenomenon under a very intense earthquake. It has been determined for the specific case of the Chimbote area, that some parts of the city present dangerous unstable conditions due to the present position of the water-table level, soil type and their relative density, that caused liquefaction during the 1970 earthquake. On the other hand, in these areas the simplified method has been employed to establish …
Dynamic And Earthquake Geotechnical Centrifuge Modelling, A. N. Schofield
Dynamic And Earthquake Geotechnical Centrifuge Modelling, A. N. Schofield
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
This state of art review discusses scaling principles for dynamic and earthquake geotechnical centrifuge models that have been known for many years, and shows how the new emphasis on modelling of models using reconstituted soil helps to reduce the difficulties of verification of these principles. It is suggested that models made of reconstituted soil can exhibit a wide range of behavior that is important in the field. In particular it is suggested that liquefaction and cracking are related phenomena which can both be modelled.

Seismic Analysis Of Spinney Mountain Dam, J. V. Williamson, M. E. Shaffer
Seismic Analysis Of Spinney Mountain Dam, J. V. Williamson, M. E. Shaffer
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The Spinney Mountain Dam, now under construction in central Colorado, is a zoned earth embankment with a maximum height of 95 feet above foundation. Detailed geological investigations revealed rejuvenated sediments of nearby older faults, which have undergone tectonic movement within the past 13,000 to 30,000 years and hence are considered capable. Studies indicate the largest earthquake expected on the controlling fault would have a Richter Magnitude of about 6.2, implying peak ground accelerations at the site of about 0.6g and a 15-second duration of strong motion. Displacement on a branch of the main capable fault during such an event is …
Evaluation Of Seismic Stability Of Foundation Soils Under Revelstoke Earthfill Dam, K. S. Khilnani, P. M. Byrne
Evaluation Of Seismic Stability Of Foundation Soils Under Revelstoke Earthfill Dam, K. S. Khilnani, P. M. Byrne
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The stability of the fine sands underlying the shells of the Revelstoke earthfill dam under earthquake shaking is discussed. The evaluation of liquefaction potential of the deposit was made from the field standard penetration resistance of the material. The dynamic analysis, made by a one-dimensional equivalent visco-elastic method, indicated that the sand under both the upstream and downstream shells had adequate liquefaction resistance and could be left in place. Adequate drainage of downstream fine sands was provided to further reduce its liquefaction potential.
Computerized Twist Drill Selection For Cast Iron And Steel, Clinton K. Orth
Computerized Twist Drill Selection For Cast Iron And Steel, Clinton K. Orth
Graduate Research Papers
The science of hole making can hardly be considered new to modern day industry. Evidence of drilling dates back as early as 4000 B.C. However, computers are considered relatively new to industry and their use is growing rapidly. One of the major concerns of industry is to identify a consistent method of selecting the proper drill when given a set of variables. The problem is to identify the sets of variables and select a drill that will give consistent results.
An Experimental Comparison Of Cross Correlator Performances Based Upon Signal-To-Noise Ratios, Sunder G. Gopani
An Experimental Comparison Of Cross Correlator Performances Based Upon Signal-To-Noise Ratios, Sunder G. Gopani
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Three commonly employed types of cross correlators were designed using standardized components which closely simulate idealized elements in an effort to experimentally verify the theoretical analysis. These cross correlators are (1) the standard analog cross correlator which consists of bandpass filters, a multiplier and a postmultiplier lowpass filter, (2) the polarity coincidence correlator (PCC) which utilizes a hard clipper in each input channel, and (3) a modified type of PCC which features a hard clipper in only one of the input channels. Two different types of filters viz. (1) the seventh-order Butterworth lowpass filter, and (2) the five-pole Chebyshev lowpass …

Survey Of Effectiveness Of Transportation Services, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent, Joseph D. Crabtree
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
With increased emphasis on public accountability and program evaluation, the need for effectiveness measures to indicate the extent to which an agency's goals and objectives are being met is increasingly apparent. A research study was undertaken to establish and implement a procedure for monitoring the effectiveness of transportation services in Kentucky. Quantitative data for many of the effectiveness measures were obtainable only through responses from the public. Surveys of licensed drivers and bus riders were selected as data sources. This report addresses the procedures and results of the two surveys. Responses were received from 35.5 percent of the 10,000 licensed …
Laser Broadening Ratio From The Multimode Oscillation Threshold, Lee W. Casperson
Laser Broadening Ratio From The Multimode Oscillation Threshold, Lee W. Casperson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Lasers with mixed line broadening typically oscillate in a single longitudinal mode for excitation levels only slightly above threshold. At high pump levels, less desirable multimode oscillation may sometimes occur. A procedure is described for using the multimode threshold as a sensitive measure of the broadening ratio, and GaAs is mentioned as an example.

The Evolution Of A Tailored Communications Structure : The Topics System, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Peter Johnson-Lenz, Trudy Johnson-Lenz
Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports
A computer-based human communication system should be designed for people's use, in response to their perceived needs and communications styles; no single system can meet the needs of all groups and individuals. It might seem that a general electronic mail or computerized conferencing system with a standard set of features should be able to meet most communications needs, in much the same way that the telephone system meets the needs of a wide range of users. However, there are many communications structures found in everyday life, ranging from one-to-many news broadcasts, to the many-to-many patterns of town meetings, from the …

Model For Evaporation Of A Grain‐Boundary Phase, Manfred Wuttig, Harlan U. Anderson
Model For Evaporation Of A Grain‐Boundary Phase, Manfred Wuttig, Harlan U. Anderson
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The surface profile which develops in the vicinity of a grain boundary precipitate in the course of evaporation is calculated. It is shown that the presence of the grain boundary precipitate affects the profile significantly if the product of the width of the grain boundary precipitate and the ratio of the evaporation rates of the unperturbed surface and the grain boundary precipitate is larger than one. A Laboratory Evaluation Of Leachate From The Jim Bridger Power Plant Scrubber Wastes, V. Dean Adams, Mary E. Pitts, Megan J. Dyer
Reports
Introduction: Scrubber wastes obtained in an affort to limit air pollution generated by coal-fired pwoer plants may contribute to another possible sources of pollution. To date, scrubber wastse have been in a liquid phase which causes disposal problems partially due to the liquid characteristics. The use of solid scrubber wastes and the land deposition of such wastes is proposed. The feasibility of solid scrubber wastes disposal in landfills is under question. The primary area of concern is the effect that water percolation through such wastes would have on groundwater quality parameters. Contamination could result either as precipitation travels downward through …
